A Warm Winter Welcome

“Hello, Winter!” I guess that’s what people mean when they say “seasons greetings.” It is certainly chillier than it was a few weeks ago, but that’s what happens when you truly step into winter, which is exactly what we are doing here in the month of December.

For the first time in years, an El Niño winter is upon us. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, our winter is actually supposed to be warmer than the past few years. That said the temps have already dipped into the 20s at night a couple of times and will very likely go there again – maybe even lower.

With the nighttime lows in mind, heating bills are probably close to top-of-mind and of interest to almost everyone reading this. Well, we have Continued on page 4

With temperatures dipping, you might be bracing for your heating bills to climb as you crank up the heat in your home. Did you know that a drafty building can be one of the main reasons it costs more to keep your home comfortable during the winter?

While major energy savings will come from window and door upgrades (expensive), improving insulation and other ambitious retrofits, the good news is that there are simple steps you can take to plug the leaks in your home. Do-it-yourself projects could result in energy savings of between 5 and 20 percent.

Assess Your Home Before tackling any projects, experts recommend starting with some level of home assessment.

The easiest first step is a visual inspection. Look for cracks, holes or spaces in the walls, as well as gaps around doors or windows where air can move in or out.

One way to find leaks is by turning on your kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans, creating a slight pressure difference between indoors and outdoors. Then hold a lit incense stick by potential problem areas. If the smoke wavers or blows in one direction, there could be a draft that needs to be addressed.

But if you’re unsure of what to look for or want a more detailed review of your home, bring in a professional. Note that a $150 tax credit can be used for an energy audit and also, many utility companies will provide the service for free.

Plugging the Leaks Ensuring your home is tightly sealed is a process known as weatherization. It acts like a protective layer for your home, which helps keep you comfortable when you are inside the building.

Weatherstripping and caulking are two of the most effective and simple air-sealing techniques you can use to capture savings on your heating bills this year.

Weatherstripping is best used for cracks around structural elements of your home that move, such as doors and windows that open and close. Be sure and choose a type of weatherstripping that will withstand the friction, weather, temperature changes, and wear and tear in the areas you plan to use it. While experts note that a significant amount of household heating and cooling – 25 to 30 percent – can be lost through windows, some cautioned against addressing the problem with quick fixes, such as films or other glass treatments. They say those techniques won’t hurt, but also won’t really get the problem fixed for you. A better option would be a really good curtain.

Next Steps Keep in mind that while these small repairs can be effective, it’s important to consider investing in bigger home improvement projects, such as upgrading insulation, replacing old doors and windows, and installing more efficient HVAC systems or heat pumps. These investments, many of which are or could become eligible for tax credits and rebates will also provide energy-saving benefits during hotter months.

The last thing you want is to have a really highefficiency, low-carbon system pumping heat or air conditioning into a building that’s letting it all leak away.

The onset of winter changes the landscape and the ways we enjoy the outdoors. The same holds true when photographing the profoundly beautiful winter landscapes in our nearby National Forests and State Parks. Consider these ideas for adapting your photographic style to the winter season, whether in a forest, along a canal trail or in your even-more-local neighborhood park.

Cold Saps Energy Cold weather quickly drains camera batteries.

Dead batteries can ruin your winter photography adventure, so be sure to carry spare batteries and keep those extra batteries stored warmly in your pockets. If you have a small digital camera, carry it in an interior pocket to warm it with your body’s natural heat.

Warm Up Slowly As anyone who wears glasses can tell you, entering a warm room after being outside in the

cold almost certainly will cause a foggy condensation on your lenses. When it comes to your camera, you want to prevent internal moisture in your camera by placing it in a sealable plastic bag before you bring it indoors. Then let your camera warm up to room temperature before opening the bag.

Come Early, Stay Late Good lighting is the key to great pictures. The best time of day to shoot outdoors in the snow is either early morning or late afternoon. At those two points in the day, the low sun will add dramatic shadows and contrast to your photographs. Keep Continued on page 14

Correct Exposure If you’re photographing a scene that’s primarily white, set your camera to overexpose to make features brighter. Otherwise, the camera’s built-in meter will set the scene at a lower reflectance, which results in underexposure. That will make the snow look dirty. Another trick is to use your flash to brighten the shot.

Add Contrast While capturing a pristine blanket of snow sounds appealing, it could lead to a boring photo.

Look for objects that add color and contrast to the shot. A red barn, colored rocks, or a deep blue sky can all add compelling contrast and interest to a photograph.

Seize the Day Winter scenes and winter lighting are dynamic, so take the shot when you see it. That light frost dusting a barren tree may look good in the morning but will be long gone by the afternoon. You will get your best photos because you are ready for the opportunities that may arise at any point during your outdoor adventures.

The Benefits of Outdoor Winter Workouts

Even though temperatures have dropped, it doesn't mean you have to bring your workouts indoors. When it gets into the 40s and 30s, you can still enjoy your regular outside routines, like

walking, running, and even cycling.

Some words of caution: Exercising in cold weather increases the risk of hypothermia (abnormally low body temperature). Seek emergency care right away if you develop symptoms such as intense shivering, extreme fatigue, slurred speech, or loss of coordination. Always let someone know when you are going outdoors for a workout. Carry a fully charged cellphone.

Cold Weather Benefits In some ways, winter can offer benefits you don't get in summer. In colder temperatures your heart doesn't have to work as hard, you sweat less, and expend less energy, all of which means you can exercise more efficiently.

Outdoor winter workouts also help you get exposure to sunlight. Sunlight may help ward off seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression some people experience during the winter months.

In Ezekiel 16:49-50 we read: “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. 50 They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.”

In Jeremiah 23:14 the reference is to adultery, deceit and control by evildoers.

In Amos 4:1-11 and Zephaniah 2:8-11 the comparison is to oppression of the poor and needy, as well as taunting and mocking behavior of God’s people.

Two references in the New Testament also give explanation for the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.

In 2 Peter 2:4-10 we read that Sodom and Gomorrah were burned to ashes, and made an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly. But God “rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the depraved conduct of the lawless.” And God will “hold the unrighteous for punishment on the day of judgment. This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the flesh and despise authority.” [ The Greek word for flesh refers to the sinful state of human beings.]

Jude 7 says that Sodom and Gomorrah "gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion." Some translations render the last term as "unnatural desire," but it literally means "different flesh". This phrase likely refers to the attempted same-sex rape of those strangers.

And since it was determined that Sodom and Gomorrah were to be destroyed before those

angels came to Lot, then same-sex rape of strangers probably was a pattern already established in those communities.

A similar story about attempted same-sex rape of strangers occurs later among the Israelites when a Levite and his concubine (a marital companion of social and legal status inferior to that of a wife) seek shelter in a town in tribe of Benjamin where they were strangers.

(Judges 19). When someone took them in to his house for the night, ‘base’ men of the city come to his door and demanded that he sent out the Levite that they may rape him. The host would not comply and instead pushed out the concubine and the men raped and abused her all night and she died on the doorstep of that house. (Unlike Lot’s daughters in Sodom, the concubine was also a stranger, so perhaps that is why they settled for her instead of the Levite.) That eventually led to a civil war between the tribe of Benjamin and the other tribes of Israel who were seeking justice for that crime.

Same-sex rape was a tactic of aggression and humiliation against strangers in the ancient world, although it was not common among the tribes of Israel (Judges 19:30).]

Memorial Bench Installed at Vigilant Fire Company

Earlier this fall a memorial bench was installed in front of the flagpole at the Vigilant Fire Company No. 2 in Slatington in memory of Arthur “Ted” Kistler. Arthur was very active in the Northern Lehigh community. He served in the U.S. Army for 6-1/2 years during the 1960’s, having been stationed in Germany. Upon his discharge from the Army, Ted returned to Slatington and joined the Slatington Police Department as a part time patrolman in 1967, a year later he became a full-time officer. He was appointed chief in 1971, where he would serve in that position for 28 years. In 1997 Ted was named

Because a suitable location was not available at the playground, the playground association approached the Vigilant Fire Company to determine if the bench could possibly be installed somewhere on the fire company grounds. Both organizations felt the fire company was the perfect location for the bench, since Ted spent so much time at the building; as a life member of the fire company, as a police officer/chief in what is now the first-floor meeting room as it was the location of the Slatington Police station during the 1970’s and in the district magistrate’s office for court, which has been located on the first floor of the fire company since the late 1960’s. Both parties agreed that a location in front of the flagpole leading into the magistrate’s office would be the perfect location due to its visibility and could function as a seat for those waiting for court hearings in the magistrate’s office. The playground association and fire company both contributed to the purchase of the bench, and the Borough of Slatington poured the concrete pad. The bench was installed by the Slatington Borough Crew several weeks ago.
