INSIDE THIS
By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
There are many ways to pamper the heart, from the medically proven to romance. February is the month for pampering the heart. Not only is it American Heart Month, but it’s also the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day and also, here at the Gazette, it’s the month for our annual Bridal Issue – this very one!
Of course the big excitement is found in this year’s local bridal stories. It’s something we look forward to every year. As you read this issue, you will find two of our area’s most personal bridal stories of the last twelve months. In their own words we will hear from Nicole and Jacob, and Emily and Jonathan.
As mentioned, February is American Heart Month. It’s the time when we can all take a moment to learn more about heart health. Be sure and read “What the Heart Does” to learn more about this

Pampering the Heart

Continued from page 3 central organ of our very existence. For instance, did you know that every day your heart beats more than 100,000 times and pumps more than 2,000 gallons of blood through your body? Those are just two of the incredible facts about the heart you’ll find in our story.

Now we all know what Valentine’s Day is about, but what are your options if Valentine’s Day rolls around and you happen to be single and, you know, around 60? We’ll give you some great ideas in “Single and 60-ish on Valentine’s Day.”

As mentioned in the last issue, this year the Gazette is going to spend a little more time looking at areas of health that can affect us all. In this issue, because it is American Heart Month, we’re going to specifically look at heart health and women. You may think breast cancer is the number one killer of women, but it’s not. It’s heart disease, which is ten times more likely to be the cause. Read “Women and Heart Disease” to learn more. And finally, returning to the primary Bridal focus of this issue, we look at whether or not the financial cost of doing a big wedding is worth it. Maybe an advantage of a smaller wedding is that it lets you save more of your money for the honeymoon. Read the pros and cons in “Is the Big Wedding Splurge Worth it?”

Speaking of honeymoons, depending on your budget, you could splurge on one of the world’s top honeymoon destinations. We’re going way beyond Myrtle Beach or even Nashville. We’re talking Bora-Bora, Hawaii – The Big Island, the Amalfi Coast in Italy, and more. Even if your budget can’t take you there, your imagination can! We tell you all about some dreamy honeymoon locations in “Ultimate Honeymoon Destinations.”

So please enjoy this issue and join us next time when we switch gears and focus on senior care and senior caregiving. Until then!

with a visit to Shippensburg University in January of 2018. Emily Bevans and Jonathan Krail have a true “love at first sight” love story, which may sound corny and too good to be true, but it’s not. It is pure, once-in-a-lifetime kind of love. Emily was visiting her best friend, Laura Beltz, for her 21st birthday at Shippensburg when she met her now husband, Jonathan Krail. Laura and Jonathan became friends that year because they lived right next door to each other. Jonathan learned of Emily all thanks to Laura, and once they finally met, the stars had aligned.

Emily and Jonathan have been together for five years now overcoming distance as they live in different towns. Limited in time, they made the most of it with each other while going back to school for their Master’s degrees and following hectic work and school schedules. They knew they wanted to be together and plan the perfect wedding

while Emily was on her final break of Nurse Practitioner school. They are very close with their family and incorporated all their siblings into their

Jacob and I met

10 years before we got married. We went from acquaintances to friends. I knew I liked him more than a friend but didn't know if I had the courage to tell him so. One day, Jacob was experiencing severe pain and he thought it was back pain. I told him it sounded like something else and to go to the ER. He finally did. Turns out it was his appendix. But I didn't know which hospital he was at. So I said to myself, I am going to guess, and if the first place I end up at is the right one, I will tell him how I feel. I decided to drive to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest, and went up to the surgery waiting room with a stuffed blue monkey, around 8pm, and as I entered the room, there were his parents, sitting there alone waiting for their son to be out of surgery. When he woke up from surgery, his words were "You're a good friend", and then he hugged the monkey and fell back asleep suddenly. I left with a smile. And this did eventually lead to us both realizing how right we were for each other. On the day he proposed, I was taken on a scavenger hunt throughout the entire Lehigh Valley to look for clues at all of our significant relationship spots, such as where we first met. The day ended at the Roxy Theatre in Northampton, where he made a short movie and proposed, and we also had our reception at the Northampton Banquet

Is a Big Wedding Splurge Worth It?

SOURCE: Various (edited)

The big wedding has been around for a long time, but weddings get no protection from rising costs. We all have a budget (or should) so the question becomes: Is the big wedding worth the big financial splurge, or, is something more intimate a better way to go?

Big Wedding vs. Small

Big weddings require significant planning – as much as a year or more out. You either have the expense (although you do get the expertise) of a wedding planner, or an exhausting amount of work, including research, to get done on your own and if you’re lucky, with the help of one or two (very) good and talented friends.

A big wedding requires you to spend a lot of money, potentially on some things that may seem less important when the final bill arrives. On the other hand, a smaller, more intimate wedding could leave a lot of your financial resources untouched; resources you can then direct to your honeymoon. Many young couples don’t go on the honeymoon they really want – and some postpone or don’t go on one at all – because their wedding was so expensive.

According to a forum at the wedding site theknot. com, users who opted for a small wedding rather than a large one were asked if they regretted their decision. Most said “no.” The most obvious difference is cost. In the United States the average cost of a wedding ranges from $17,000 to $26,000 and up. Also, a good amount of wedding cost is on a “per guest” basis, so clearly a smaller wedding will cost less.

Benefits and Challenges

There are benefits to a big wedding. There’s no limit to your guest list, a bonus if you’re a social butterfly. This helps eliminate the possibility of offending anyone who didn’t get invited due to guest list limitations. If wedding venues or suppliers set minimum spending requirements, a big wedding will help you meet those with no issues.

Small weddings have their benefits as well, but also pose their own challenges. If you go really small, it’s harder to achieve a party vibe. With fewer people involved, there’s more you have to do yourself. If a limited guest list means you can’t

invite some people, you may encounter some conflict.

Another challenge with a small wedding is that it may also limit your venue options because of spending limits set by venues and suppliers. That said the cost of big weddings has been shown to

send people into significant debt. Almost half of those spending large amounts of money on a large wedding end up suffering financially for their decision to splurge.

Do Your Wedding for You

It’s not as if a beautiful wedding is only possible with a huge budget. Finding affordable venues, limiting the flowers, and finding an incredible wedding dress from a thrift store are all the strategies you need to ensure you have what’s necessary without throwing yourself under a mountain of debt.

Obviously, the choice of whether to have a big or a small wedding is a personal decision. There really isn’t one way that is better than the other. You just have to choose what’s best for you. Some people like big weddings for the memories (and maybe the bragging rights) and if you have the money, go for it! But you don’t need to please others and spend money you don’t have to make great memories. Do what’s right for you.

Ultimate Honeymoon Destinations

If you’re planning your wedding for 2023, or even 2024, your honeymoon is probably on your mind. Depending who you are, you might want to honeymoon at the Jersey Shore or up in the mountains, or maybe Nashville.

The truth is you can go a lot further than that depending on your budget. We did some research at travel.usnews.com to find you information about some of these top honeymoon destinations in the world.

Bora Bora / Bora Bora's out-of-this-world scenery is just the tip of the iceberg – or, rather, the volcano. The epitome of an agenda-free beach honeymoon destination, Bora Bora gives newlyweds their pick of gorgeous white sand beaches and lagoons for sunbathing, snorkeling and sailing. Luxurious spas and romantic overwater bungalows abound.

St. Lucia / If you're seeking a luxurious Caribbean honeymoon with just the right amount of adventure, look no further than St. Lucia. You'll find white sand beaches and lush mountains dotted with all-inclusive boutique resorts – many with open-air rooms perfect for basking in the island's natural beauty. On St. Lucia, you and your love will enjoy hiking, taking mud baths and relaxing together in geothermal pools.

Amalfi Coast / The Amalfi Coast's colorful villages, crystal-clear water and rugged shoreline help make this part of Italy a one-of-a-kind honeymoon destination. You can explore some of the region's 13 towns on foot or by boat, or simply spend your vacation relaxing on one of the picturesque beaches. For a real treat, have a romantic candlelit dinner in the gardens or on the

terrace of a charming villa.

Tahiti / French Polynesia's largest island is sometimes passed over by newlyweds, but it's just as romantic as more popular honeymoon destinations. Hole up in an ultra-private resort and sunbathe on black sand beaches, take a day trip to stunning Moorea (a quick flight or ferry ride away) or head to the capital of Papeete to

Here, you can relax on stunning beaches, hike to spectacular waterfalls and get a glimpse of craters and active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. To pack on the romance, stroll through the ornamental Lili'uokalani Gardens, enjoy a sunset cruise or go on a stargazing tour.

Paris / Newlyweds who travel to the City of Light find the ultimate experience in sophistication and romance. From the quiet ambiance of fine dining establishments to swoon-worthy sights like the Tuileries Gardens and the Louvre, the capital of France was practically made for lovers. Take in the sights from a Seine river cruise or meander through the charming streets of Montmartre. Then, treat yourselves to something

sweet at La Maison du Chocolat, and when the sun sets, hold your loved one close and watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle every hour on the hour.

Tuscany, Italy / From over-the-top villas to aromatic cuisine, Italy's countryside teems with romance. Honeymooners can visit less-crowded cities like Siena and Lucca before checking out the world-renowned Leaning Tower of Pisa. When you've had your fill of touring, create new memories together by signing up for a truffle hunting tour or cooking class.

Single and 60-ish on Valentine’s Day

SOURCE: humana.com (edited)

Valentine’s Day isn’t just for couples. No matter your relationship status, you can still celebrate the day with your friends, family or even yourself! Skip the red roses, chocolate and romantic movies and see how you can put your own personal twist on the day. Here are 7 things you can do when you are single and 60-ish on Valentine’s Day.

Pamper yourself / Today is a day to honor yourself. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do – a massage, facial or acupuncture treatment – now is the time to explore. Some places in your community might have Valentine’s Day specials, so don’t be shy about taking advantage.

Prefer to relax at home? Meditate, read a book, soak in a bubble bath or try a face mask.

Buy yourself something you’ve always wanted. Have you been coveting a piece of jewelry or a new electronic device? Today’s the day to treat yourself to something special.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day / Call over some of your favorite gal pals for this holiday and ask everyone to bring their favorite brunch dish, such as waffles, pancakes, eggs, bacon, fruit salad or breakfast casserole. Enjoy the feast and enjoy their friendship.

Visit with extended family / You might see your immediate family members frequently, but what about sharing some time

with extended family members? Today is a great day to let them know you’re thinking about them. If they live far away, send a card or pick up the phone to let them know you care.

Dance the day away / Get your heart pumping through the rhythm of your feet. A local dance studio might offer swing dancing, tango or salsa classes. Got 2 left feet? You can still bring some music into your day by checking out a local concert or music

club.

Cook up something new / If you could be magically transported to any country for a day, which one would you pick? Maybe you’d find yourself wandering around a bazaar in Morocco, on a wine tasting tour in Italy or sailing around Greece. Pick whichever country inspires you the most and try a recipe from that faraway land. Most libraries have international cookbooks you can check out. Not much of a chef? Order something from your favorite restaurant and eat it on your fanciest plate.

Spend time outdoors / Put on your shoes and get some fresh air today. Whether it’s a brisk walk around the neighborhood, a stroll through a park or a jog on your favorite trail, spending some time with Mother Nature can help clear your head and heart. And if it’s just too darn cold to go outside, start planning a trip for the spring.

Single and ready to mingle / Check to see if there are any local events in your area for singles where you can take the opportunity to meet new people. Or consider having family or friends set you up on a blind date!

No matter how you decide to spend your day, use today to celebrate yourself, and spend some time doing something you love.

Super Gigantic Flea Market

You think it’s sad looking into his kennel….imagine how he feels looking out day after day

Diesel came to us as a local stray in January 2022 and we believe he may have been dumped in a Wawa parking lot since he still had a leash attached, although it was chewed as if he may have been tied to something and left behind.

He was adopted out a few weeks later but returned due to it not being the best fit for him. Sometimes that happens in rescue, and sadly for Diesel he continues to wait for almost 10 months now for his next family.

He is a volunteer favorite here where some volunteers will call dibs on a shift for who gets to walk him or spend playtime with him in our yard

Diesel loves car rides and going on hikes, long walks, and even a run if you’re up for it! When the adventure is over, he’s happy to snuggle and chill out on the couch. He’s the best of both worlds!

Diesel has spent time at sleepovers with volunteers and we have learned that he is housebroken and the most loyal dog. He forms a very strong bond with people, so it will be important that he goes to a home where each member of the family is willing to be an active participant in caring for Diesel.

Diesel is one of those great dogs that continues to get passed over on adoption days. The shelter is no place for a dog like Diesel because he needs activity and snuggles!

Diesel is a pointer/pittie mix. He's about 1.5 to 2 years old and still has that young dog energy! He would love to go to a training class because he is such a smart pup and already knows some basic commands. He is looking for a home with someone who is home more often than not as he does not like to be crated or confined for long periods of time. He prefers to be the only pet in the home, so no other cats or dogs for this guy. Older dog savvy children preferred too.

He’s a very special boy here who is loved by many and we hope that someone out there will give him the chance he so much deserves

Ready to meet Diesel?

Come visit him Saturday between 10 to 2 or email dogadoptions@thesanctuarypa.org to discuss

What the Heart Does

SOURCE: Various

Often considered to be a condition for the older generation, heart disease and other associated illnesses are on the rise across all age groups. That is why February, American Heart Month, is so important to us all. It is a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the warning signs and symptoms

of heart disease, as well as the things that we can do in our everyday lives to reduce risk to our hearts.

Obesity, alcohol, smoking and high blood pressure are all things that people of all ages can be affected by. That said they are all things we can do something about with some diet and personal behavior modifications.

What the Heart Does

Your heart is the muscle at the center of your circulation system. The heart pumps blood around your body with every heartbeat. In addition to sending oxygen and nutrients to all parts of your body, the blood also carries away unwanted carbon dioxide and waste products.

The heart plays the following roles in the human body:

• Pumps oxygenated blood throughout the body

• Circulates hormones and other essential substances to different parts of the body

• Receives oxygen-poor blood and pumps it to the lungs for oxygenation and in the process transports waste products from the body

• Maintains blood pressure.

You may not think about your heart very often, but it does amazing things day in and day out to keep oxygenated blood circulating throughout your body. You might be surprised to learn how hard it works to keep you alive!

Here are 10 things you may not know about this incredible organ:

1. Your heart beats more than 100,000 times per day.

2. Your heart pumps about 1.5 gallons of blood every minute. Over the course of a day, that adds up to more than 2,000 gallons.

Women and Heart Disease

SOURCE: cdc.gov (edited)

The term heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions, including coronary artery disease and heart attack. Although heart disease is sometimes thought of as a man’s disease, almost as many women as men die each year of heart disease in the United States.

How Heart Disease Affects Women

Despite increases in awareness over the past decades, only about half (56%) of women recognize that heart disease is their number 1 killer.

• Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, killing 314,186 women in 2020 – or about 1 in every 5 female deaths.

• Heart disease is the leading cause of death for African American and white women in the United States. Among American Indian and Alaska Native women, heart disease and cancer cause roughly the same number of deaths each year. For Hispanic and Asian or Pacific Islander women, heart disease is second only to cancer as a cause of death.

There are numerous symptoms of heart disease and although some women have no symptoms, others may have the following:

• Angina (dull and heavy or sharp chest pain or discomfort)

• Pain in the neck, jaw, or throat

• Pain in the upper abdomen or back

These symptoms may happen when someone is resting or when they are doing regular daily activities. Women may also have other symptoms,

I still can‘t believe (it’s that time again).

(Outside of the groundhog ‘s hole)

"Is it February already good gentlemen; What do you want with me?

Say... is that my shadow I see Here by the hole? "

I can tell them almost anything; They are so anxious to hear This weather prediction

Nobody really knows! They laugh and jump with joy And happily shout to each other. They're now satisfied And head back to the woods. And I turn around, Run into my hole, Jump into my bed, And sleep for six more weeks!

You Are Not Alone

You Dear Groundhog

I like the groundhog, fat and round, It's right at home in the cold ground; To its winter bed it's going soon, Snores a little, then falls asleep.

And yet I'll bet

Its clock is set

To get awake – the second of February!

It could be that the sun comes out again; The groundhog won't stay in its house, It calls heartily, "Hey! You people!

Soon the warm springtime will come."

The groundhog here, It does it thus,

So that it is satisfied and happy.

If it sees its shadow, like the wind

It slips into its hole – fast! quickly!

"Six weeks more of wintertime!"

So says the groundhog, ever ready.

And it’s also true,

I want to make it clear –

That's been its rule for many a year.

You dear groundhog, highly honored: Almanacs are not worth a thing, If it weren't for your importance

And good advice to the farmers. And now, as for me, I believe in you –

You are a smart and knowledgeable animal!

[Peter V. Fritsch’s poem was from his book of poetry and Scherenschnitte, Der Haahne Greht (The rooster crows).

Edgar M. Eschelman’s poem was printed in Earl C. Haag’s newspaper column, Es Nein-uhr Schtick (The nine o’clock piece or break for farmers out in the field.).

By the time you read this, you will know if the groundhog had seen its shadow. So far, we had a mild winter, but who knows what lies ahead –except that sly(?) groundhog!]
