In one article we are going to look at the power of friendships, which can be very positive. Unfortunately, they can also be quite negative depending on who’s involved. We’re going to look at friendships very much from the “plus” side and why the power of friendship is especially important during the winter months. See “The Power of Friendships” for the discussion. In case you don’t know, January is identified as mental wellness month. We all have “good days” and “bad days” and the truth is, there’s really no better time to take stock of our own mental health than right now, at the start of the new year. In the article “Understanding Mental Wellness” we provide you with tips and information you can use to evaluate your own mental health and potentially take yourself in new directions. Now over the past few years – the pandemic had plenty to do with it – there have been fewer and fewer people volunteering. Yet the reality is that volunteers are always needed. Review your retirement account balances over the last 12 months / Now is the time to check how your account did in 2023 and see if you’re saving enough. Williamstown - The Forgotten Past by the SHPC
The Slatington History Preservation Committee would like to share some history information about Williamstown, located in Washington Township, Lehigh County, PA, between Slatington and Emerald. Founded by Henry Williams in approximately 1858, the village or hamlet, had its origin to support slate mining and manufacturing. It included a school, store, church, cemetery, and houses. He opened his first quarry at the curve on the left side of the road after leaving Slatington going to Emerald. It was called both the Henry Williams and the Williamstown Quarry. Later he purchased the Franklin Quarry near Emerald. Houses for the slate workers were built along the road between the Williamstown Quarry and Williamstown Lane. The inhabitants were Welsh, German, and Hungarian and numbered between 75 and 100. There were also three private homes on Williamstown Lane. Fire disaster occurred on July 5, 1910 when a row of nine frame tenement houses were completely destroyed. The fire was discovered about 1 o’clock by John Roberts, a motorman, on a car running between this place and Slatedale, when he noticed flames shooting from the roof of one of the dwelling houses. He drove his car with all speed to town and notified the fire company which hastened to the scene. By the time they reached there the fire had gained such headway that they were unable to cope with the blaze. About 2 o’clock, with a terrific roar, the roofs of the houses fell in and sent showers of sparks into the air. The collapsing of the roofs scared many of the foreigners in the nearby houses and they quickly packed up their belongings and got ready to move. It is said that

nearly eighty people, all Slavs, lived inthe nine houses. Quarry disaster occurred on March 1, 1894, as seven workers were working in a tunnel inside the Williamstown Quarry, at that time owned by Owen T. Williams, when the roof caved in. The quarry was seventy-five to a hundred feet deep. Within the quarry various tunnels diverge, penetrating the rock under the ground and following to the dip of the veins of slate. The men had been at work for an hour when the layers of rock above them came down with a thunderous roar and a huge mass of debris shut the entrance to the tunnel. Respondents went to work immediately, trying to unblock the tunnel. The first man they found was William Richard Jones. He was at first buried out of sight, except for one of his hands. Using this hand he managed to scrape away the loose debris around his face. After extricating Jones, deeper in the tunnel they found Josiah (Joseph) Remaley. The rescue party kept digging and after several grueling hours pushing their way through fifteen feet of debris they discovered the forty-eight year old engineer, Samuel Kreitz, with crushed legs and lacerations on his head. The search for the other four victims continued for nearly a week with the rescue party working day and night. On March 6 and 7 searchers found the mangled bodies of Griffith Pritchard, who was the owner’s brother-in-law, age 56, and three Hungarian laborers. All seven men died from the cave-in. Presently all that remains is a small home which was once a church, the cemetery, and two of the original homes, all on Williamstown Lane. The Williamstown Quarry is filled-in, the factory, store, school, original church, and row homes are gone.

January is mental wellness month. According to the World Health Organization, mental wellness is “a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Being in a good mental wellness state of mind doesn’t necessarily mean you have an absence of mental health issues. It does mean however, you possess some or all of these positive mental wellness traits: • Contentment: Feeling secure no matter what your circumstances. • Resiliency: You can stand up to and deal with stressful situations and then return to a sense of normality. • Work/Life Balance: Having this balance is healthy and means you can separate your home and work life, allowing time for both work and play.

Examples of toxic friendships include: • Encouraging or enabling behaviors that are harmful and not helpful such as substance misuse • Unbalanced relationships or a relationship that’s a one-way street (all give and no take or all take and no give) • Continuing to focus on – and repeatedly talk about – shared worries, wounds, or challenges without including possible solutions. Supporting the Mental Health of Friends It’s often assumed that taking care of mental health challenges is a job for a mental health professional, but we can all play important roles in supporting the mental health and well-being of people we know. Our friends are healthier because they know that we care about them, and trust that we’re there to listen, play, laugh, and cry with them. And, we get the same benefits from having their friendship. What Is a Friendship? A friendship is really just a series of small but meaningful acts of connection and comfort – like checking in on someone when you know things are hard, celebrating a success, reaching out just
because you like hearing each other’s voice, and spending time together. These small acts show that you’re there for each other. And, when a friend is struggling or doesn’t have many other folks in their life to support them, small acts can make an enormous difference in their sense of well-being. Here are some ways to be a supportive friend: Connect regularly / Reaching out to say “hi,” share a story or a laugh, make plans to do something together, or just to check in are the healthy things we do that boost happiness and keep us connected to the people we care about. Even if it’s just sending a text, a little outreach can go a long way. Share your own struggles / If you’ve struggled with your own emotional ups and downs, and you are comfortable sharing, consider talking a bit about what you’ve been through and what’s helped. Your friend might be nervous about opening up, so sharing your story can be a good way to show them you’re a safe person to share with.

Girl Scout holiday visit to Dillard Manor
The Northern Lehigh neighborhood Girl Scouts joined together to visit and sing holiday songs with the residents of Dillard Manor in Slatington. Away with such fashions – they’re worth nothing, Give me the old fireplace. For that place, I carry [fast] in my heart Always a homesickness pain; Whatever I am doing; no matter where I am, Then my thoughts go back there. It remains for me dear and worthy, The old warm fireplace. The back log was thick and round, And out in front the andirons – On those one put smaller wood pieces, Then the flame rises very brightly and proudly; And when the windstorms rage outside How the draft roars in the chimney. One has the wood supply prepared And piled up on one side; And on the other side, following an old rule, The well-worn woven-seat chair. The tongs and shovel have their purpose; One stands them there in the chimney’s corner. Hunter and Firearm Safety Millions of people hunt every year. The goal is for each and every one of those hunters to return home safety at the end of the hunt. While hunting is one of the safest recreational activities there is, even one injury is one too many. Young hunters particularly should complete firearms safety training. Research shows that as more students have completed firearms safety training, there’s been a corresponding decrease in the number of injuries and fatalities that occur as a result of firearms-related hunting incidents. Taking the Shot As stated in the tips above, the rules of safe firearms handling include treating every firearm as if it is loaded. Never assume it is not loaded. Also, always control the muzzle of the gun, keeping it pointed in a safe direction. Remember that anything that the muzzle points to is in the crosshairs. Don’t overlook the possibility of a ricochet. When taking aim, be sure of your target and what is beyond. You alone are responsible for knowing what is in front of your target, near your target and beyond your target. If you are uncertain about any of the three, don’t take the shot. Susan is the daughter of Erin and Tim Gilsbach. She has two sisters, Colleen and Anne. Her activities include Secretary of the Theater Club, Debate Team President, Newspaper Editor-in-Chief, Art Club, Student Council, and National Honor Society. She applied for and was accepted as a member of the DeSales University scholars Program and the Lehigh University Scholars Program. A one-night session titled “The Loss of a Spouse” will be conducted on January 14th at 6PM, at the Helping Hands Community Center in Slatedale. Holiday season perfect time to send a caring message to Brighten a Veteran’s day, possibly save a life Submitted by Joseph Butera
In the midst of the holiday season, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds everyone who knows a veteran to reach out and let that person know someone cares about them. The holiday season can be exceptionally stressful for some veterans dealing with militaryrelated mental health challenges such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Military veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than Americans who never served in the military. For female veterans, the risk factor is 2.2 times more likely. “Taking the time to reach out to a veteran can not only make their day but it could save their life. A caring message might seem like a small gesture, but it will have a positive impact,” said Maj. Gen. Mark Schindler, Pennsylvania’s adjutant general and head of the DMVA. “Anyone with a connection to a veteran can send a caring message, including family members, friends, advocates and health care providers.”
A caring message can take the form of a holiday card, letter, text, email, phone call or any communication. Schindler said that current service members and their families should be thought about too, and that it is important to reach out year-round, not just during the holidays. Pennsylvania serves more than 700,000 veterans, the fourth largest veteran population in the country. It is one of 54 states and territories taking part in the Pennsylvania Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among our Service Members, Veterans and their Families. The Pennsylvania Governor’s Challenge team works with sister agencies and departments, several educational institutions, and a broad group of not-for-profit and faith-based organizations to develop and implement statewide and regional suicide prevention best practices. Another resource available to veterans facing challenging times is DMVA’s PA VETConnect, an outreach program that enables the DMVA to concentrate services from within communities where our veterans live. This initiative allows the DMVA to utilize community-based providers to fill gaps in services for homelessness, employment, mental health, addiction and more. Man trapped while attempting to steal copper from Allen Township Substation By HOME NEWS STAFF
On Sunday, December 24 around 1 p.m., state troopers responded to the substation in Allen Township. A 45-year-old man from Whitehall became trapped while attempting to steal copper from inside an electrical apparatus. Troopers were able to locate the man via a nearby ladder. According to state police, after approximately
six hours, the man was successfully rescued and provided further emergency medical attention. The Northampton County DA’s office approved a felony burglary and criminal trespass charge as well as other applicable charges. During the incident, a transformer valued at $800,000 was damaged.
