Celebrate Freedom! By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
In this issue we are celebrating Independence Day, commonly known as The Fourth of July. Our other focus this issue will be cars and trucks, which are also associated with a certain kind of freedom. We started our planning for this issue with a little research to find out lesser known facts about our Independence Day that we celebrate on the fourth of July. We will share those with you in 255E South Best Ave. Walnutport, PA 18088

“Fourth of July: Did You Know?” And of course since Fourth of July celebrations involve food, we have found three “red, white and blue” recipes that look like real crowd-pleasers, including one that’s very kid-friendly. You can easily whip these up for your own Fourth of July festivities or frankly, any outdoor summer festivities involving food. On the “cars and trucks” side of things, the fascination with driving runs deep in America. It certainly started early for me when my dad would let me drive the car around the block (with him sitting right beside me) before putting it into the garage for the night. I think I was only about 13 when we started doing that, so by the time I got my license at 16, I was ready to hit the road! Speaking of taking a little drive trip, I’m sure most of you know that in our region we have one of the nation’s greatest and longest-running antique and classic car shows, the Macungie Car Show. Also known as Das Awkscht Fescht, this summer’s edition marks the show’s 58th season, showcasing vehicles and more across 42 acres in Macungie Memorial Park. In “2021 Macungie Car Show” we give you all the key details. Jumping from the antique classics to today’s car Continued on page 4

and truck market we look at the various reasons car and truck prices for both new and used have never been higher. After the COVID disruption of last year that impacted car manufacturing, computer chip production and the rental car industry, the entire auto industry is still recovering and trying to catch up. We’ll tell you what we know in “Car and Truck Sticker Shock” later in this issue.
And finally, if car shopping is not actually on your agenda, but you’re still planning a summer road trip, we’ll give you a handy car-prep checklist to review before you start your journey. We’re certain that wherever you go you will want a trouble-free ride, because getting your car fixed in the middle of your vacation is probably the one thing you don’t want to include in your “what I did this summer” trip report to family and friends. See “Prepping Your Car for Summer Adventure” for the full checklist. So enjoy this issue and have a happy Fourth of July! We’ll see you next time!

Fourth of July: Did You Know? SOURCE: Various
Independence Day is a federal holiday commemorating the Declaration of Independence of the United States, declared on July 4, 1776. The holiday, known more commonly these days as the Fourth of July, is widely celebrated with fireworks, family gatherings and barbeques. The history behind our Fourth of July celebration is a long one and it’s important to celebrate the true meaning behind Independence Day to honor America’s quest for freedom. Here are both facts and observations on our national Independence Day. To start, a few quotes: The Father of Our Country George Washington: “As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy
members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower: “Independence Day: freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be daily earned and refreshed – else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die.” According to late Author and Humorist Erma Bombeck: “You have to love a nation that celebrates its independence every July 4th, not with a parade of guns, tanks, and soldiers who file by the White House in a show of strength and muscle, but with family picnics where kids throw Frisbees, the potato salad gets iffy, and the flies die from happiness. You may think you have overeaten, but it is patriotism.” And now, a few interesting facts: Although the document was dated July 4, congress actually voted for independence from Great Britain two days prior on July 2, 1776. apparently wasn’t fully signed by everyone until August 2, 1776. Thomas Jefferson was the main author of the Declaration of Independence. However, four others were also on the committee: Roger Sherman, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams and Robert Livingston. John Adams wrote a letter to his wife about how memorable Independence Day would be in American history. In his letter he said the day should be celebrated with parades, bonfires and fireworks. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration. It came out in the newspaper on July 6, 1776 for everyone to see. Three presidents who signed the Declaration of Independence died on July 4. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson both died on July 4, 1826 – on the 50th anniversary of the country’s independence. James Monroe died five years later on July 4, 1831. The Liberty Bell rings 13 times every Independence Day to honor the 13 original states. Descendants of people who signed the Declaration of Independence tap the bell, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at 2 p.m. eastern time every 4th of July. The very first 4th of July fireworks show took place in Philadelphia in 1777. Fireworks, canons and bells all went off to honor the 13 original states. It didn't become a federal holiday until 1870.

Car and Truck Sticker Shock SOURCE: Various
If you are looking to buy a car or truck or even rent one, you may be about to experience some serious sticker shock. As we come out of the pandemic there are several things contributing to higher prices and sticker shock. At the top of the list, car manufacturers have a continuing global computer chip shortage and computer chips are used in every new vehicle. That means the manufacturers can’t build new cars and trucks at their pre-pandemic pace. As a matter of fact, they are significantly short of that pace this year. As a result, car dealers have a fraction of the new vehicles they normally have. And with fewer new cars to sell, they take in fewer used cars to sell. So with both new and used in short supply, pricing is being driven by demand. Not 2020 Anymore Last year’s massive job losses and the shift to working from home caused a 30% plunge in auto sales in the second quarter of 2020. New car production was also significantly off in the first half of this year. But right now, the demand for new vehicles is booming. One reason for the rising demand is workers starting to return to their offices and their commutes. Those workers may have postponed a car or truck purchase last year, but now they’re looking to buy and three things are making them even more eager to buy: low interest rates, government stimulus checks and pandemic savings. But the high demand is coming at a time when auto plants around the globe are still closed or
struggling to raise production while dealing with global shortages. With demand exceeding available supply, purchase prices are moving up. The Rental Impact You will probably also experience sticker shock when you try to get a rental car this summer. Behind the rental counter there are two key things going on that are limiting the number of rental cars available. Number one is that chip shortage. Because manufacturers can’t produce their normal number of cars, they don't have their normal supply of excess new cars and trucks to sell to rental companies at a discount. That means rental car companies are getting far fewer new vehicles to put into their fleets. So you might ask, why aren’t the rental car companies holding onto and renting last year’s cars a little while longer? That leads to the second thing impacting the number of rental cars currently available. To get through last year’s pandemic downturn, most rental car companies had to sell off about a third of their fleets. Now with travel rebounding and the pipeline of new cars at a trickle, rental prices are also rising based on demand.

Prepping Your Car for Summer Adventure SOURCE: AAA.com
For those of us not buying a new vehicle this year, it’s still the season for a summer road trip. To help you get your car or truck ready for smooth, trouble-free adventures, we’ve excerpted an article from AAA to give you a prep checklist before you hit the road. 1. Check tires and tire pressure Inspect all four tires and your spare. Look for cuts, gouges or sidewall bulges. Insert a quarter upside down into grooves to check tire tread. If you see the top of George Washington’s head, it is time for new tires. Also, check tire pressure when the car has been idle and tires are cool. Inflate as needed to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. You will find it listed in the owner’s manual and on the sticker on the driver side door jamb. 2. Listen to and feel the brakes If you hear a grinding sound or feel a vibration when applying the brakes, take your vehicle to an auto repair shop for a brake inspection. A service professional will check the brake system for fluid leaks, and will also check the pads, rotors, shoes and drums.

3. Secure and test the battery Check your car battery to be sure cable connections are clean and tight, and the hold down hardware is secure. Have a service professional do a battery-check to determine remaining capacity. 4. Top off engine oil and other fluids Check that engine oil, coolant and brake, transmission and power steering fluids are at the correct levels for safe driving. When adding fluids, use products that meet the specifications listed in the owner’s manual. Note that newer cars may have sealed automatic transmissions without a dipstick, and electric power steering that may not use fluid. 5. replace any that are cracked, glazed or frayed. Note that modern drive belt materials do not easily show visible signs of wear. As a general rule, replace drive belts every 60,000 miles. Also, inspect and replace worn, brittle, bulging or excessively soft radiator hoses. Check for leaks around hose clamps and at the radiator itself and the water pump. 7. Test your Air Conditioning Take a test drive with the air conditioner running. If you notice a decrease in cooling capacity, take the car to an auto repair shop for diagnosis. Also have the cabin filter inspected and replaced as needed. 8. Replenish emergency kit supplies Keep a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle. Include a flashlight and extra fresh batteries, first-aid supplies, drinking water, nonperishable snacks for people and pets, car battery booster cables, emergency flares or reflectors, a rain poncho, a basic tool kit, duct tape, gloves and shop rags or paper towels.

My son, John, goes to college, That is what pleases me so. Betsy, one of my daughters Sticks to the tasks well, She has such delight in Rev. Letz, She will become a pastor’s wife. For Lizzie, it goes rather poorly, She brings many sorts [of guys] around, Almost anything is okay for her, Sometimes she has three at once. The best, the dearest, and also the prettiest Of my girls is called Hanna. Of course she is certainly the youngest. Do you want to be able to teach her? There are so many boys coming around, Some large and some small. I think it can’t be any other way They want to see my girls. Mommy says it could not be so,

They come here to John. Yet some are almost always here, They don’t come for fun. I will not gladly give Hanna away, She may be able to become even prettier, Yet now she loves Dr. Brow, I would want that she gets a preacher. My wife also thinks it would be right nice If every one of the girls – The oldest down to the youngest – Would marry a preacher. Now I talked about my girls, I am a man who is ill. Still I have not yet become tired, I will tell you of my John. I think it could be about five years – Yes, it is surely not more – Here John came [to me] once [Wanting] to go to college. Of course I then asked John, What he wanted to become then? This had almost bothered him, Then he said, “Why, a preacher!” John went off to college, Now he knows many, many things. He said some things were devilishly hard, Thus they made him learn. He told me about Greece, Of Rome and of Germany. He said the women were sweet And thought that was no disgrace. Now he knows everything of this time, Almost from the beginning on. He is familiar with almost all people, And wishes he had a wife. John likes Lizzie Blose, She wears crooked eyeglasses. Of course, the world is a big place, He can go wherever he wants to.
Mommy’s wish is true, That I would not have thought [to be]. And every one of my girls, They desired a pastor-spouse. We are now becoming pious and live very nicely. Every one of the girls has a pastor-spouse, I wish no more for myself. Lizzie Blose is now John’s [wife], She helps him to lie a little. He says preaching will be fun, He can still fool himself. Still we want to hope for each other That we will soon get much money. And that everyone will go to heaven At their end on this earth. [This poem was first published in The Pennsylvania-German Magazine, vol. IX, 1908. It listed Howard S. Paules from Muhlenberg College, class of ’08, and that is all I know about him.]

Celebrating 90 Years submitted by Kathryn A. Petrich
A very happy 90th birthday is wished for Eleanor Petrich, a resident of Lehigh Township since 1961. She and her husband purchased a home that summer on what is now Walnut Drive. From there, she commuted daily to the Washington School in Northampton where she taught first graders from 1966 until retiring in 1991. Earlier this year, at age 89, she again assumed the role of president of the Lions Club of “Lehigh Township Lioness.” Eleanor is a mother of four: Louisa Oswald of Coplay, Cynthia Gallagher of Lynnport, Kathryn Petrich of Philadelphia, and Steven Petrich of Danielsville. She has seven grandchildren, including Edward Gallagher, Daniel Gallagher, Timothy Oswald, Holly Oswald, Rosella LaFevre, Lilybeth LaFevre, and Maxwell Petrich. She is also a greatgrandmother of five. To celebrate her 90th birthday, an annual “girls’ vacation” is planned. She and her daughters are driving to family in Columbus, Ohio, where they will link up with granddaughter Lily who is traveling down from Detroit. From there, a visit to Kentucky’s horse country is planned. Be sure to wish Eleanor a happy 90th when you see her. The big day was June 29.

(61 Summer Learning Adventures By A. Barrella, Advanced Tutor at Reading Escapades and Math Explorers
With another strange school year over and summer in full swing, it is more important than ever to retain everything that was learned this school year. This last year was challenging for everyone and to make the transition into next school year easier, it is best to continue learning throughout the summer. Many students think that school is a punishment, not something that is wonderful and beneficial. However, once a student is engaged and ready to learn, studies have shown it is so much easier for them to retain the information they are taught. The question we must ask is how can we make learning into a fun daily task? To do that we must be engaging with our children or students. The one of the best ways is to start with what they enjoy! This not only engages them but helps with reading comprehension. Do they like dinosaurs? You could have plastic dinosaurs that act out a story they are reading. Do they like dolls? You could have dolls sit on the table and have your 32

The Gathering Place Mission - OUR STORY Submitted by Anita
Near the end of 2014, a historic church in Weissport, Pennsylvania closed its doors. A small group of Christian men, who were not willing to see this church become re-purposed into another commercial enterprise, purchased the building and its content. This church facility, located in the heart of Weissport since 1893, has and will remain a guiding light to this community. We operate multiple charitable faith-based endeavors under the trade name of “The Gathering Place Mission”. Presently, our Mission offers on the 4th Saturday each month a free “Take-Out” dinner, feeding anywhere from 55-75 people in need. We also support another ministry, Family Promise. For further info, contact Terry at 267-872-9238. We work with Yokefellow Prison Ministries offering assistance with the “Restorative Justice” concept. In addition, we have a very successful clothing ministry, under the name “The Shepherd’s Closet” located at 305 White St., Weissport, Pa. 18235 in The Gathering Place Mission.
The clothing ministry is open twice a month, the second Saturday and third Wednesday from 9am-2pm. Drop-offs of clothing, shoes and other household items can be made on The Shepherd’s Closet opening days each month at the rear of the building from 9am-12pm. For more info concerning The Shepherd’s Closet, call Overseer Anita W at 610-377-5395 or email at bugsbuny@ptd.net. Those who visit The Shepherd’s Closet also have opportunity to sign up for classes such as Anger Management, Men’s Bible Study, GED classes, Life Skills teachings and Discipleship Classes and personal finance classes. There is also a small food pantry available for those visiting The Shepherd’s Closet on opening days and also every 4th Sat during take-out dinners. Active classes already are taking place as follows: Ladies Bible Study –Every Tues 9:30am-------Healthy Cooking Class-Every third Sat 9am -----Anger Management Class by appointment. We pray as God adds to and multiplies volunteers and donors, we will be able to serve even a greater portion of this community in a larger way. Special event coming up…….One year anniversary celebration for the Shepherd’s Closet on July 10, 9am sharp. A ribbon cutting ceremony by representative Doyle Heffley, police and speaker for the mission will be held. “Standing united” we will celebrate with patriotic music, door prizes, tours thru the Shepherd’s Closet—refreshments— cake and ice cream for all those who took time out to support us on this special day showing how much we care, share and help our community in time of need!!!!

Northern Lehigh Service Unit The Northern Lehigh Service Unit of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania hasn’t let the pandemic slow us down. Although all in-person meetings and activities were cancelled last March due to the Covid-19 pandemic and many girls were disappointed over cancelled camping trips and missing meetings, several of our troops were able to carry on virtually. Multiple troops in the area had girls who were working on awards, and they didn’t let the shutdown stop them. As March not only marks the anniversary of the pandemic,

The Bronze Award is awarded to Junior Girl Scouts (grades 4 and 5) for designing and implementing a 20+ hour service project to fill a need in the community. COVID- 19 closures did not prevent Lillianna Serfass from Junior (now Cadette) Troop 634 from completing her Bronze Award project. For her project, Lillianna connected with several local Police Departments and designed and made beds for K-9 officers to relax in the police cars while off duty. Lillianna was able to make a total of 6 beds and help keep K-9 officers in Police Departments including Lehigh Township and Allentown, as well as local Sheriff’s Departments. Overall, Lillianna spent more than 35 hours on her project, and learned valuable leadership skills including decision making and public speaking. In her reflection on her project Lillianna reports “I hope I will inspire others to act by making donations to animals in need. The Silver Award is awarded to Cadette Girl

Scouts (Grade 6,7,8) for designing and implementing a 50+ hour service project. All projects have to be presented to and approved by members of our council, and must specifically spell out what the girls will complete, who will be on their team to help them, and how they will earn and spend the money to complete the project. Aricka Creyer and Tyla Block from now Senior Troop 675 hit a few stumbling blocks when the pandemic caused them to change their plans. The girls worked with VALOR Clinic Foundation, building a raised garden to comply with the veterans’ dietary restrictions and designing and painting a mural in their dog kennel. With the shut down in March, the girls demonstrated their ability to adapt, by altering plans for in-person craft workshops and diners. The girls assisted with Valor’s monthly Stand Downs which consisted of community outreach by distributing food, clothes and personal care items to homeless veterans in the Lehigh Valley.l Their project was completed over 60 hours. Both girls have been involved in Girl Scouts for 10 years, they started together as Daisies in kindergarten. Also Delaney Szwast has been involved in Girl Scouts for the past 10 years.
The Community Service Bar is earned by Cadette, Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts (6th-12th grades) who complete at least 20 hours of volunteering with an organization in their community. The service unit has three girls who were able to complete community service bars this year. Cadettes Arianna Williams and Savana Tomsics from Troop 643 earned their service bars working with the Second Chance Shop located in Slatington and Karla Altmann Performance Horses respectively. This project will increase awareness of hummingbird conservation and hummingbird habitats. Savanna has been working on her Service to Girl Scouting Bar as well. She started by helping one of our younger troops in person, and continued helping to run Zoom meetings this year when the troop was unable to meet in person due to COVID restrictions. Aricka Creyer also completed her Community
Service bar by serving as a puppy raiser for The Seeing Eye. She is currently raising her second dog, a yellow labrador named Dana. The service unit would like to recognize two of our Northern Lehigh High School Seniors who will be graduating this year, for having passed through all 13 years of Scouting, starting as Daisies in Kindergarten and continuing through Ambassadors in 12th grade. Erica Detweiler is planning to attend Temple University where she will major in pre-med. She gained valuable experience for her future career though her experience with GIrl Scouts when a troop trip to the ambulance company turned into a volunteer opportunity.
