The Motoring Life By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
Hello there! And welcome to this year ’s automotive issue. Personal vehicles – car or truck – equal mobility. So as we toast “the motoring life,” we’re going to spend some time in this issue looking at summer road adventures you can take on your own or with your friends and family. Those will include both day trips and longer. We will also pull some research from automotive information resource Edmunds.com on the top

five vehicles – both cars and trucks – across America. So do you think the country favors cars, or trucks? You’ll be able to get a real good idea of that answer when you read “America’s Most Popular Vehicles (2021).” Completely accessible as a day trip from anywhere in our reader region is the National Museum of Industrial History. You may not even be aware of this museum, which is associated with the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., as it was only founded in 2016. The Museum is located just down the road in Bethlehem, PA on the site of the former Bethlehem Steel Plant. Read more about it in “Day Trip: National Museum of Industrial History.” For additional day trips, as well as longer Continued on page 4

excursions specifically in Pennsylvania be sure and read “Summer Road Trips in Pennsylvania.” This article will offer road trips to suit very different interests, including information on several of the Commonwealth’s 10 natural wonders. Now, if you want a “beaches and sunshine” kind of summer, you will definitely want to read “Driving the Jersey Shore.” The Shore is 141 miles long with beaches, beach towns, nature, boardwalks and a whole lot more from top to bottom. We’ll tell you about everything from a boat launch in one Shore town that is good at the lowest tide with parking right beside it, to two local-favorite restaurants, one of which offers “dock and dine” and “dock and go” services. Finally, we offer an annual reminder to prep your car for the summer road trip so you have no vehicle issues once you are on your way. We have
turned to AAA.com to bring you a pre-trip checklist to make sure your car is ready to go. Get all the details in “Prepare Your Car for Summer Travel.” So that’s what we’ve got! Please enjoy this issue, plan your summer adventures and then join us next time when we take a look at pets and all that can involve. Until then!

Day Trip
Continued from page 5
Providing historical context in its exhibits, the National Museum of Industrial History explores the past, present, and future of industry through engaging stories of the machines and people that transformed the U.S. during the Industrial Revolution. Its location at the center of the former Bethlehem Steel complex places it in one of the hubs of our country’s industrial might. Working Artifacts The Museum’s collection includes many rare pieces from American industries, including the textile industry, steel and iron, and propane gas. Many of the artifacts are kept in working condition, including a newly-restored narrow gauge locomotive – more on that below. Exhibits include a hot air balloon simulator showing one of the many uses of propane gas. The original Jacquard Loom that produced fabric for the White House for almost 80 years is also on exhibit and includes a piece of fabric produced for President John F. Kennedy. Drive the Locomotive Perhaps the Museum’s most unique experience
is the hands-on train engineer experience on its newly-restored narrow gauge locomotive. The 1941 Whitcomb diesel-electric locomotive was used at Bethlehem Steel in the Electric Furnace Melt Shop. In its original capacity the locomotive was used to move charging buggies filled with scrap metal through the Plant. Today the restored train operates on a little over 100 feet of demonstration track. It is an educational experience you will not forget. You will be able to climb into the cab, learn how the locomotive works Continued on page 8

and then take the controls under the supervision of museum personnel. It is a short but memorable run that lets you step back in time, putting you in the same engineer’s seat as the steelworkers who helped build the country. Hoover Mason Trestle Part of the Museum campus is the Hoover Mason Trestle, which was the internal railway of the Bethlehem Steel Plant. Today, the Hoover Mason Trestle has been transformed into a 1,650-foot long linear park, four stories above street level, with one-of-a-kind industrial views. At its height, Bethlehem Steel was the secondlargest steel producer in the United States. Employing tens of thousands of people, the company’s massive steel works on the banks of the Lehigh River supplied the building materials for projects like the Golden Gate Bridge, the Chrysler Building, the Hoover Dam, and countless others. The backbone of this operation was the Hoover-Mason Trestle. Experiencing the Industrial Past It is very fortunate for us that when Bethlehem
Steel declared bankruptcy in 2001 and subsequently ceased to exist in 2003, the city of Bethlehem made the correct decision regarding the property. Rather than demolish it or leave it to fall to ruin, it has been preserved as an American industrial landmark and repurposed for arts and culture. If you like American history – particularly its Industrial History – visiting the National Museum of Industrial History is a great day trip to make in our area. Be certain to include a walk along the Hoover-Mason Trestle and take the time to sit at the foot of the sleeping blast furnaces. You will find placards there providing historical context for both the hulking machinery towering overhead as well as the lives of the people who worked there.

Summer Road Trips in Pennsylvania Source: Various
We all know about the event attractions in our area, but our region and our entire state offer many other options for summer adventures. Here are just a few you might consider for a summer road trip. Local Day Trips Tomb of Unknown Soldier (Bethlehem) / If you are interested in history around the American Revolution, this small monument, with several graves, markers and a flagpole was designed to commemorate American Revolution soldiers who died in a makeshift hospital in

Bethlehem. There are supposedly more than 500 soldiers buried nearby in unmarked graves in an area that was once outside of town but is now a residential neighborhood. One soldier was reburied in the tomb around 1931 during the monument’s construction and several more were reburied here on Memorial Day 1996. The city typically hosts a ceremony here on Memorial Day, and there are other small events occasionally held at the site. America On Wheels Museum / One day-trip that ties directly to our automotive theme this issue is the America On Wheels Museum in Allentown. The museum, which is also known as the Museum of Over-the-Road Transportation, showcases antique cars, trucks, motorcycles and bicycles. Car cruises and car shows are frequently on the museum calendar. The museum, with 45,000-square-feet of exhibit space, on-site parking, and handicapped accessibility is a definite day-trip option. Pennsylvania Outdoor Adventures Pennsylvania is one of the most gorgeous states in the country and it’s really a paradise for people who love the outdoors. Here are just a few of its premier natural wonders you might consider for your summer adventuring this year. Summer Road Trips in PA Continued from page 18
destination for hikers and anyone who loves jawdropping views. You don’t need to travel out West to see and photograph some pretty dramatic vistas. Cherry Springs State Park / Cherry Springs State Park in Coudersport is a major destination for astronomers and romantics. The reason? It has some of the darkest night skies on the Eastern side of the country. Set up a tent or telescope and start counting the stars! Susquehanna River / The Susquehanna River is 444 miles long, the longest river on the east coast of the United States. With that kind of river frontage, it should be no surprise that it’s a major destination throughout Pennsylvania for lovers of kayaking, rafting, fishing, swimming, and just relaxing.
Penn's Cave / Penn's Cave in Centre County is a fascinating destination that requires visitors to take a boating excursion through underground chambers. Its unique limestone formations are almost guaranteed to be unlike anything else you've ever seen in person. Note there are 48 steps to where the boats board so because of that the Cave Tour is not handicapped accessible. JULY 7, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com
Ringing Rocks / Back in our region, one of the most intriguing natural wonders in the state is found in Bucks County called Ringing Rocks Park. If you head there, be sure and take a hammer or other hard object that you can knock on the rocks. You will be filled with wonder when they make a ringing sound like a bell. Hawk Mountain / Also in our region, you will find Hawk Mountain, a destination for hikers and bird enthusiasts. It is perfectly situated along the path of migratory birds, especially hawks. One of the popular observation spots is Bake Oven Knob. We are in a great state for summer adventure. Have fun!

Prepare Your Car for Summer Travel SOURCE: AAA.com (edited)
Is it time to plan your summer road trip vacation? Yes, gas prices are up, but if you have mapped your route, booked your hotels, and made a final checklist of things to do before you go, be sure prepping your car for the trip is on it. Here is a car-care checklist to help you ensure your vehicle is ready when you are. 1. Check tires and tire pressure Inspect all your tires and, if you have one, the spare tire as well. Look for cuts, gouges or sidewall bulges. Insert a quarter upside down into the tire grooves to check tire tread. If you see the top of George Washington’s head, it is time for new tires. Also, check tire pressure when the car has been idle and tires are cool. Inflate as needed to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressure. 2. Listen to and feel the brakes If you hear any grinding sound or feel a vibration when applying the brakes, take your vehicle to an 22
auto repair shop for a brake inspection. Be sure the service technician checks the brake system for fluid leaks, as well as the pads, rotors, shoes and drums. If repair or replacement is needed, get the cost estimate before approving the work so you know what to expect. 3. Secure and test the battery Check your car battery to be sure cable connections are clean and tight. Also make sure the hold-down hardware is secure. Have a service professional do a battery check to determine remaining capacity so you don’t end up with a dead battery while traveling. 4. Top off engine oil and other fluids Check that engine oil and coolant, as well as brake, transmission and power steering fluids are all at the correct levels for safe vehicle operation. When adding fluids, use products that meet the specifications listed in the owner’s manual. Note that newer car models may have sealed automatic transmissions without a dipstick, and electric power steering may not use fluid. 5. Replace wiper blades and replenish windshield cleaner Rubber wiper blades naturally deteriorate over time. If wipers streak or fail to clear the windshield News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || JULY 7, 2022
thoroughly, replace the blades. Fill the windshield washer reservoir with fluid formulated to remove insects and other debris, and test to make sure the nozzles spray adequately. 6. Check belts and hoses Reinforced rubber drive belts power the engine water pump and accessories such as the alternator and air conditioning compressor. These should all be inspected and if any are cracked, glazed or frayed they should be replaced. Note that modern multi-rib or drive belt materials do not easily show visible signs
of wear. As a general rule, replace drive belts every 60,000 miles. In terms of radiator hoses, replace any that are worn, brittle, bulging or excessively soft. Also check for leaks around hose clamps, as well as the radiator and water pump. 7. Keep the AC running cool Take a test drive with your car’s air conditioner running. If you notice a decrease in cooling capacity, take the car to an auto repair shop for diagnosis. Also have the cabin filter inspected and replaced as needed. 8. Replenish emergency kit supplies It is smart to keep a well-stocked emergency kit in your vehicle. It should include a flashlight with fresh and extra batteries, first-aid supplies, drinking water, non-perishable snacks for people and pets, car battery booster cables, emergency flares or reflectors, a rain poncho, a basic tool kit, duct tape, gloves and shop rags or paper towels.

America’s Most Popular Vehicles (2021) SOURCE: Edmunds.com
Automotive information resource Edmunds. com collected data over the course of 2021 to determine America’s top-selling vehicles. It used data for new vehicle sales to individuals only. Fleet sales and government sales were not included. Edmunds.com used that data to determine the best-selling vehicles nationwide, but also to break down the results by region and even by state. Here are some of the highlights. Northeast The Northeast includes Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.] The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are always strong sellers nationally, and that holds true in the Northeast. The RAV4 is the best-selling SUV in New England, but in the other Northeast states the CR-V noses ahead. Notably, Ram is the topselling truck in Pennsylvania, elbowing out Ford and Chevy.

Focusing on Pennsylvania, the top-five selling vehicles are all trucks or SUVs. In order, PA’s “Top Five” are: Dodge Ram 1500/2500/3500, Honda CR-V, Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado and Toyota RAV4. Midwest The Midwest region consists of Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. When buying a truck, drivers in the Midwest prefer the Ford F-Series and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500/2500/3500 models. The Chevy sells better than the Ford in many Midwestern states. Regarding SUVs, the Chevrolet Equinox gives SUV leaders Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V stiff competition. South According to the Census Bureau, the South consists of Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma. The South is truck country. Trucks are the top three sellers in most southern states with drivers generally preferring the Ford F-Series, although West Virginia and Alabama favor the Chevy Silverado. Florida is an exception to the rule of trucks with its top-two sellers being the Toyota Corolla and RAV4. West The West consists of Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Hawaii. The "Big Three" trucks from Ford, Chevy and Ram remain popular in the West, but Toyota and Honda are also top-performing brands. The Toyota RAV4 is consistently in the top five across the Western states, including Alaska and Hawaii. From Honda, the CR-V is the most consistent sales performer in this region, but the Civic earns the 12 Neww 12 New 2 Ne 1Model Model Homes Model Homes s

honor of being California's top selling vehicle of any type. Non-Truck Top Sellers The non-truck best-sellers nationwide are the Honda Civic at #7 and the Toyota Camry at #6, according to Edmunds.com. The Honda Civic is the car that made Honda a household name. Today, with multiple body styles and engines, the Civic maintains the broad appeal that has kept it near the top of the best-seller list for decades. The Toyota Camry is the other non-truck on America’s top-seller list. As a point of distinction, the Camry is the only nameplate on the list to have competed in NASCAR. Interesting Top-Seller Facts: • 100% of the five best-selling vehicles in Alaska

are trucks. • Nationally, 80% of the top 10 sellers are either trucks or SUVs (Honda Civic and Toyota Camry are the exceptions). • Four of the top 10 sellers nationally are Toyotas, more than any other brand. Those Toyotas in order are: RAV4, Camry, Highlander, Tacoma. • The Tesla Model Y is the top-selling EV and the only EV that's a top-five seller in multiple states (CA, DC, HI). • The top-selling Korean vehicle in America is the Hyundai Tucson, landing at #22.

Farm Fences Like I told you the last time, this time we want to talk about fences. The fences were not just for nice, but they had a purpose. Someone once wrote, “Good fences make good neighbors of us all.” What was the reason for fences? The first was, the farmers wanted to keep their cattle on their land and keep out other farmers’ cattle. The second was to break up the farm into fields for planting hay, grains, potatoes, and corn and to pasture their cattle. Third, the fences were for marking off how far for every farmer or land owner, his land went [Set boundaries]. Our elders had the first cattle fences. They did not live next to each other. Their first job was to clear the land to build a home, a barn and so as they could plant edibles. Their cattle, a cow or two, was tied out with a long rope, fastened to a tree or post. So it was with the horses, when they were not working with them. Some fenced in a field to keep in the cattle [the cattle fence]. The first fences were made from stone or brush. This was stuff that was taken off the land. The brush fence was made with upright posts and brush or tree branches. This was no sturdy fence. Continued on page 29

Next were the stone fences Where the land was very stony, the farmers took the stones out of the field so they could plow and plant. That was a job. What did they do with the stones? They made a stone fence out around the field. There were such large stones that two men could not lift them. Smaller stones were placed between the larger ones. They were laid like they were locked together. The stone fence was from two to six or seven foot high. They were often as wide as they were high. Next were the zigzag or rail fence [Also called the Warrem-fens or worm fence.] These were made from rails and reminded one of a snake. The rails were 12 foot long and the posts were about half as long. The posts were set up like an “X.” The first rail was set on a stone. The posts were set in the ground so that they would not be caught by the plowshare. They also dare not be too high so that the wagon, loaded with hay or grain [sheaves], could get by without catching them. To make the zigzag fence, six or seven rails are laid on one another. The end of the next section
of fence, in other words, that becomes where the ends of two rails come together. The rails become interleaved. [A picture is worth a thousand words here; I had no idea what he meant till I saw one.] Next were the post fences. That took more work to make the posts and rails as well as to set up the fence. Holes had to be made to set the posts in. The rails, 12 foot long, were split from chestnut wood and made pointed at the ends. The posts were six foot long and made to the thickness that they should be. They used a broad axe to make the posts. There were two-inch holes made in the posts with an auger. Then the holes were made Continued on page 31

Slatington Library News submitted by Louise Bechtel
The library has regretfully accepted the retirement of Annabel Fogal from the Board of Directors of the Slatington Public Library. The library will miss her expertise, experience, and historical knowledge of our library's mission to the community. Annabel is a retired librarian who has held many positions within the library and the book industry and her vast knowledge has
been invaluable to the board. Upon announcing her retirement she wrote, “I will always remember Mae Jones and my introduction to the small library in the basement of the Welsh Presbyterian Church on Fourth Street when I was in Elementary School. I have never regretted choosing Library Science for my advanced education and lifelong work.” The Library Board and Staff wish to thank Annabel for her long service to the library and the community. Scouts Have S’more Fun!
Daisy, Brownie, and Jr. Girl Scouts from the Northern Lehigh Service Unit 733 joined together to learn new skills and to have some fun. For our 1st activity the girls were instructed in building their own bluebird house by Lehigh County Game Warden, David Furmato. The kits were provided by the PA Game Commission. A nature scavenger hunt, learning about trees and taking the Tree Promise were done to fulfill requirements of the national Girl Scout Tree Project. Painting rocks and designing individual badges to reflect their personal spring experience followed. But the favorite for many girls was learning about campfire building and safety skills, then making and roasting S’more cones! A very big thank you to Boy Scout Troop 66 for sharing their facility and
grounds with us. The aim of Girl Scouting is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girls of all ages are welcome to become part of our local Northern Lehigh Troops. For more information or to join, email nlgirlscouts733@gmail.com.

of the traditional Lenape homeland and each other. The signing was prefaced by an equally historic and monumental three-week canoe journey, which began at the top of the Delaware River in Hancock, N.Y. and culminated in Cape May, NJ. It was agreed that the re-signing of the Treaty, as well as the River Journey, should take place every four years. It has since been conducted in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018 with ever-increasing spirit and vigor. It is now 2022 and time to make that wonderful journey, both physically and in spirit, once again! This year's trip will begin in Hancock, New York, on Saturday, July 30th, and culminate on August 20th in Cape May, New Jersey. There are currently thirteen public treaty-signing events scheduled for the following dates and locations: Saturday, July 30th: Equinunk Historical Society, Equinunk PA Sunday, July 31st: Willow Wisp Organic Farm, Damascus PA Tuesday, August 2nd: Zane Grey Museum, Barryville NY Friday, August 5th: Phoenix Gift Shop, Dingman's Ferry PA Sunday, August 7th: Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort, Shawnee on Delaware PA Monday, August 8th: Lake Minsi County Park, Bangor PA Wednesday, August 10th: Sigal Museum, Easton PA Thursday, August 11th: Milford Boro Park, Milford PA Friday, August 12th: Sunbeam Lenape Park, Frenchtown NJ Monday, August 15th: D&R Canal State Park,
Lambertville NJ Tuesday, August 16th: Haverford College, Haverford PA Wednesday, August 17th: East Falls River Landing, Philadelphia PA Saturday, August 20th: Les Rea’s Farm, Cape May NJ Who Are the Lenape? The Lenape people are the original inhabitants of Delaware, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Southern New York. For over 10,000 years they have been the caretakers of these lands and of The River of Human Beings, more commonly known as the Delaware River. The Lenape were the first tribe to sign a treaty with the United States and the first tribe to have land set aside for them in New Jersey. Over a period of 250 years, many Lenape people were removed and dispersed throughout the country. Some took refuge with other tribes. A large number of Lenape families remained in the homelands and continue the traditions of their ancestors up to our present day. The people of the Lenape Nation of PA are the descendants of those who stayed in our homeland and of those who went west to Ohio and returned. Our families include descendants of Hannah Freeman, Issac Still, Killbuck, and Henry. Some settled in the Pocono Mountains and others in Allentown, Nazareth, and Bethlehem. Many lived on both sides of the Delaware River in Easton and Burlington where communities were documented in 1840. Some families come from the Brotherton and Shamong areas of New Jersey. Some descend from the inhabitants of missions such as Continued on page 40

Shekomeko, Friedenshutten, and Meniolagomeka. Others are the descendants of marriages between the Lenape and the earliest German immigrants. Our history is a rich one in which we take great pride. Today the Lenape people from all over Turtle Island are revitalizing their communities. Many place names in Pennsylvania are derived from the Lenape Language, such as Manyunk, Conshohocken, Neshaminy...to mention only a few. In the city of Philadelphia stands a statue of Chief Tamanend, a revered leader among the Lenape, who signed many treaties with William Penn. The history of the Lenape is truly the history of Pennsylvania. Goals To journey down the Lenape Sipu (Delaware River) in a joint effort to raise awareness, awaken the spirit, and bestow the past, environmentally, culturally and historically, to the future. To promote the awareness that the Lenape people living in Pennsylvania are carrying on their traditions, culture and spiritual beliefs, and that they are engaged in numerous projects to provide practical ways for all citizens to respect and protect our homeland and the health, welfare and future of the next seven generations of our children. Our aim is to promote the awareness that the state of Pennsylvania is one of only a few states in this country that does not recognize its indigenous people and to invite citizens and political representatives to sign this treaty so that we may fulfill the dream envisioned by our founding fathers, William Penn and Chief Tamanend. Finally, we desire to put the fear, pain and humility of the past, behind us, once and for all, and to walk together into the future.

The Treaty The Treaty states that those who sign acknowledge the Lenape as the indigenous caretakers of these lands and agree to support the Lenape tribe in their own unique way. Although this is not a legal, binding document, it is an agreement of heart, mind and spirit. Its words carry the integrity of our ancestors and the hope of our children. Those organizations and individuals who sign this treaty will forever be a part of our mutual history and the stories that we tell our children. They must make the commitment to “stand up well" as a living testament to the fact that environmental, cultural, and historical awareness is the key to our future. Treaty of Renewed Friendship In the spirit of Chief Tamanend and in the spirit of William Penn, we, the undersigned, do openly recognize the Lenape Indian Tribe as the original inhabitants of Pennsylvania. We acknowledge the Lenape people as the indigenous stewards of their homelands and also as the spiritual keepers of the Lenape Sipu, or Delaware River… And we do hereby commit actively to support our Lenape sisters and brothers in whatever way we are able, for a term of four years, helping to maintain the cultural identity of Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Southern New York. We will support the Lenape people in one or more of the following ways: hosting cultural / educational programs, partnering as caretakers of the Lenape homeland and Delaware River, assisting in Lenape language revival projects, assisting in displays/exhibits of Lenape culture, helping the Lenape people to obtain and/or protect sacred land sites, encouraging updated curriculum in public schools, attending Lenape functions, volunteer service and support, Continued on page 42

We also recognize that this treaty is good for a term of four years, August 2022 until August 2026, at which time a new treaty may be entered into. May these partnerships serve to heal the past, give direction for today, and brighten the future as we move forward, learning from the mistakes of some of our forefathers, and may we, together, bring to light the cultural and geographical significance of Pennsylvania, preserving this
natural history for all of our children. May the Creator of all things embrace us as we move ahead.
