It’s Finally Summer! John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

It is hot and sticky, so it must be summer! And that means it’s time for summer fun and recreation, which will be easier to accomplish this year with the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. In this issue we’re looking at a number of things you might consider making part of your personal summer recreation activities. This year we again have the option of taking in a great township, county or state fair. We have a nice report for you, specifically on two of the very best summer fairs in our area. We will give you all the important information on the Carbon County Fair and The Great Allentown Fair in “Enjoying Summer Fairs” later in this issue. We also provide a few safety suggestions to keep in mind with the big festival/fair crowds – and those suggestions are not all COVID-related. If you are a fan of county fair demolition derbies like I am, you will probably really enjoy learning more about the history of demolition derbies in Continued on page 5

Finally Summer Continued from page 3

“Demolition Derbies: Did You Know?” The history goes way back. We are also going to take a look at some things to expect if you are planning to buy a bicycle this year. Last year, demand for bikes skyrocketed as people everywhere starting buying them so they could have a safe, outdoor exercise option. One of the biggest new things in the world of bicycling last year was e-bikes, which are motor-assisted bicycles designed to give you an extra boost when you need it for a hill or some extra long-distance riding. They are the coming thing. Be sure and

JUNE 17, 2021 || townandcountrygazette.com

catch up on that and much more in “Bicycle Trends for 2021.” Also, two issues ago we focused on camping, but we didn’t really name some of the great family campgrounds here in our area. We saved that for this issue. We’ll tell you all about it in “Nearby Family Campgrounds.” Lastly, if you’re looking for a recreational getaway – for a single day or a full week – you need to know about the Mauck Chunk Lake Park. It’s right in our area and a great recreational resource where you and your family can create wonderful memories. Find out more in “Recreational Focus: Mauck Chunk Lake Park.” So enjoy everything in this issue and we’ll see you next time when we talk cars and trucks.

The Giant Company to Rollout Flashfood App Chainwide The GIANT Company today announced it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all GIANT and MARTIN’S stores following a successful pilot. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli, and bakery products, nearing its best before date at significantly reduced prices. First introduced in May 2020 at four GIANT stores in Lancaster, Pa., Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating GIANT and MARTIN’S stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia, Pa. counties, with additional stores joining each month. “Our ongoing partnership with Flashfood is two-fold, providing our customers with access to fresh foods, while also helping to divert more than 250,000 pounds of additional food waste away from landfills,” said Glennis Harris, senior vice president of customer experience, The GIANT Company. “We’ve received great feedback over the past year from our customers, many of whom have told us they can eat more fresh food because of the program. We can’t wait to offer this program at all of our stores and to all of our customers this summer.” By downloading the Flashfood app (free on iOS and Android), shoppers can browse deals on fresh items like meat, produce boxes, bakery items and snacks that are nearing their best before dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating GIANT or MARTIN’S store. “Food waste is a massive contributor to climate change and we’re eager to tackle this complex

issue in partnership with The GIANT Company, a clear leader on sustainability,” said Josh Domingues, Flashfood founder & CEO. “Flashfood is a triple-win for our partners, the planet and, most importantly, people. By introducing Flashfood chainwide, The GIANT Company is making it possible for more than a hundred thousand families to access more fresh food this year.” In addition to the Flashfood app, The GIANT Company also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through its Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America®, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. Recreational Focus: Mauch Chunk Lake Park SOURCE: Various

If you’re looking to stay close to home, but still want a great variety of summer recreational activities available to you – even for just a day – you should know about Mauch Chunk Lake Park. The park is about 28 minutes from the Slatington area and attracts more than 150,000 visitors annually. The park has become a popular vacation destination for many families.

Located on the outskirts of Historic Jim Thorpe, this county park is perfect for your family getaway. While at the park you can enjoy the 2.8 mile Mauch Chunk Lake, walk or bike the renovated 16-mile Switchback Gravity Railroad and more. You can also rent a boat, hike or stroll through the woods to the Environmental Center to see the birds of prey. Campsites, cabins and cross-country skiing are available in season. Hiking Trails If you are a hiker, Mauch Chunk Lake Park has some great trails. Here’s some information about them: The Switchback Trail is the most popular. The trail follows the route of the former Switchback Gravity Railroad and can be accessed near the main entrance to the park. The trail is designated for hiking and biking. Hikers of all ages will enjoy the uneven-aged forest tract below the dam where towering Hemlocks, White Pines, and American Beech dominate. The shaded trail runs parallel to the Mauch Chunk Creek and provides easy access for fishing. Mountain bikers will enjoy the trail as it leads to Mount Pisgah where there is a magnificent overlook of the Lehigh Gorge State Park.

Wednesday UnWine’d at Slatington Trailhead

The Shoreline Trail is a hiking trail that can be accessed from the Camping Area, Boat Launch B, the Carbon County Environmental Center, or from the Switchback Trail. The trail is closed to mountain biking due to the sensitivity of the wetland areas. This trail can be difficult to navigate in some areas and is not recommended for young or inexperienced hikers. The easiest and most accessible section of the trail is near the dam and offers a picturesque view of the 345-acre lake. The Fireline Trail is a hiking and biking trail. To access the trail follow Route 902 South to the top of the mountain. After you turn left onto East Mountain Top Road, the parking lot and trail access will be on the left-hand side. This trail is an unimproved access road that also serves as a fire break for the park. The trail is about 3.5 miles long and will eventually lead to the Switchback Trail below the dam. The Orchard Trail and Board Bottom Trail are secondary trails that can be accessed from the Switchback Trail below the dam. These trails provide hikers and bikers with some options for exploring one of the most scenic and serene areas of the park. You may access more information about the Park here: https://www.carboncounty.com/index. php/about-the-park and here: https:// delawareandlehigh.org/map/attraction/mauchchunk-lake-park/

Enjoying Summer Fairs SOURCE: Various

Throughout the year there are more than a hundred Pennsylvania fairs that provide a great opportunity to enjoy the state's culture, food, and to learn more about its traditions. No matter where you live in the state, there are sure to be a few fairs nearby, and our region is no exception. Here are two of the best “just around the corner” fairs you might want to attend this year. Carbon County Fair The Carbon County Fair, taking place in Palmerton will run from August 9-14. The mission of the Carbon County Fair is to celebrate the County’s rich agricultural heritage with education and entertainment appropriate for all ages. The fair, which is run by the Carbon County Lion/ Lioness Fair Association Inc., was created to showcase the animals and projects of the youth in Carbon County and West Penn Township and provide the positive recognition they deserve. Events and Entertainment This year’s Carbon County Fair will feature all kinds of events and entertainment. Some highlights will be a baking contest and a full livestock schedule, as well as an Antique Tractor Pull, a Tuff Truck event, a Demolition Derby and a whole lot more. There will also be fireworks and different musical entertainment every night. Some of the entertainers this year will be Dean Hahn and the Hawks, Rick K and the Allnighters with special guests the Belle Tones, and Twitty and Lynn, featuring Tre Twitty and Tayla Lynn – the grandchildren of Conway

Twitty and Loretta Lynn. Check the Fair’s website for full information and any special announcements: http://www.carboncountyfair.com/. The Great Allentown Fair The Great Allentown Fair will take place September 1-6 at the Allentown Fairgrounds in Lehigh County. The 46-acre fairgrounds complex was established in 1889 and along with The Great Allentown Fair, is owned and operated by the Lehigh County Agricultural Society. The Greater Allentown Fair is steeped in the tradition of its rich agricultural roots and emphasizes education for the non-agrarian public. The Fair, which has been running for more than a century and a half, also draws big-name entertainment. This year on September 2, you can see Toby Keith and on September 3, Carrie Underwood. Then on Labor Day Monday, be sure and catch the J&J Demolition Derby. Visit info@allentownfair.com for more information.

Staying Safe at the Fair Even as the COVID-19 restrictions lift, we need to stay aware of the risks that do remain when in large crowds like we’ll find at these fairs. Regarding masks, exercise your best and reasonable judgment on wearing them while attending the Fair based on your personal comfort level with the crowds. Also, here are some general tips that kids – especially teenagers – should follow to stay safe if spending time without adult supervision at the fair: 1. Don’t talk to strangers. 2. Be aware of your surroundings – don’t focus on your cell phone. 3. Stick together; Let’s there’sTalk safety in numbers.

4. Practice basic self-defense. A swift kick to the shins and a loud scream draws attention. Stay safe and enjoy the summer fairs.

In preparation for Memorial Day on May 2nd we replaced 3,500 flags on Veterans graves. Post #16 has been blessed with the men and woman who help us complete all these tasks. Allen O. Delke Post 16 American Legion held their 101st Consecutive Memorial Day Service at 10:30 am, Monday, May 31, 2021 at Slatington Memorial Park. In attendance was a large crowd that included Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, veterans from every branch of United States Armed Services, and their families. They came to remember all who have served this great nation, those who are currently serving, and those who gave the supreme sacrifice for all the freedoms that we enjoy this day and throughout the years.

And the firefly is the cutest that there is. People are afraid of the other crawling things, that the world makes lively at night, but not the fireflies. How did this happen? Where did the first fireflies come from? Why do they strike fire? In spring the dandelion is the first flower to bloom. The yards and fields become completely yellow. But people do not look at the ground at that time. They just look at the sky and are happy that the sun shines again. No one says to a dandelion flower, how pretty that it is. There are people that pull them out of the ground and hate them as though they are a snake. And the flower Continued on page 26

does not like this. When the dandelion is finished blooming, the wind comes along and blows its soul far away, away up into the heavens, where it becomes a star. And there it was also not satisfied. People can see it only at night, and at that time they are sleeping. It didn’t matter how nicely the dandelion flower in heaven glittered – people are too tired to look, and sleep shut their eyes. Up in heaven the stars do not allow the Lord any rest, day and night. The Lord tried well to

make the stars happy, but all his effort was in vain. He was pitying the poor little things. But all that was of no consequence until one day – a few hundred years ago – a star came to the Lord and asked to go down to the earth again. Why did it want to go down there again, the Lord asked? The star replied to the Lord that it wanted to become a very tiny bird. One that would fly when all the other flying creatures would be sleeping. Then it would glitter before the eyes of the people that were resting from their daily work. It would not only be a creature that a person liked. It would also show a person how beautiful the soul of the dandelion flower is. The Lord of the stars allowed that the star would be permitted to come down on the earth again and be a firefly. Now the stars from heaven fly around us now and then in summer, when we sit outside in the coolness and we enjoy seeing them strike fire. People like the fireflies. And the soul of the dandelion flower is glad and can rest. Evenings when one sees a shooting star now and then, one knows a firefly is on the way again to strike fire for people and to be liked by them. [This folklore story from Dr. Alfred Shoemaker

and the one about barn swallows that I featured back in April were from Mit PennsylvaanishDeitsch darich’s Yaahr (With Pennsylvania Dutch throughout the year) published by the GermanPennsylvanian Association. It is a reader for grandparents and their grandchildren. (If you are interested, it is available from Masthof press on the internet.) I’m sure these two selections probably would not impress teenagers but many of the other readings would help convey the culture and history of the Dutch better for older children. I include folklore stories like these because somewhere in Dutch communities they were conveyed to little children by their parents or grandparents and that gives us a glimpse into the lives and mindsets of those earlier generations.]

Demolition Derbies: Did You Know? SOURCE: Various

To start, what is a demolition derby? A demolition derby is a contest in which skilled drivers ram old cars into one another until only one car remains running. Demolition derbies were first presented at fairs, race tracks, and speedways by independent promoters in the 1950s. There are unconfirmed reports of demolition derbies occurring as far back as the 1930s, utilizing the abundant supply of worn-out Ford Model Ts. The First Demolition Derby The originator of the demolition derby concept is disputed. Some think a gentleman named Don Basile invented the demolition derby at Carrell Speedway in 1947. Others believe stock car racer Larry Mendelsohn created the concept in 1958 at New York State's Islip Speedway after he realized many people preferred wrecks to racing. What is known is that the sport's popularity grew throughout the 1960s, becoming a standard

You Are Not Alone

feature at county fairs and becoming a subculture nationwide. The popularity of demolition derbies also spread overseas. In 1963, a reported crowd of 20,000 people packed into the Rowley Park Speedway in Adelaide to see Australia's first demolition derby. Cultural Impact On TV, ABC’S Wide World of Sports televised the World Championship Demolition Derby from the mid-1960s until 1992. Also, the popular ABC sitcom Happy Days included the character Pinky Tuscadero, a female professional demolition derby driver,

which was almost unheard of at the time with the show being set in the 1950s. Pinky was also an occasional love interest to the show's most popular character, Arthur “Fonzi” Fonzarelli. In 1972, the Los Angeles Coliseum hosted a demolition derby with mint-condition late-model cars driven by Mario Andretti, A. J. Foyt and Bobby Unser. Folk-pop singer Jim Croce wrote and sang about the sport in one of his popular songs, “Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)” on his 1972 album, You Don’t Mess Around with Jim. The popularity of demolition derbies peaked in the 1970s, but by the 1980s its popularity was falling. One reason is that with the end of Wide World of Sports, exposure to a huge television audience became scarce. Built-in Danger Demolition derbies can be dangerous. Although serious injuries are rare, they do happen. An example of a demolition derby injury is chronic whiplash pain, often characterized by migraines. Drivers are typically required to sign a waiver to release the promoter of an event from liability. Safety concerns and then a shortage of full-size vehicles were the two main reasons the sport’s popularity began to slip in the 1980s. Evidently

the best full-size car ever for a demolition derby was an old Chrysler Imperial. They were built so well in fact that some derbies banned them because no one else was winning. Winning Strategy There is strategy to winning a demolition derby and it usually takes more than just driving around ramming into people all willy-nilly. One strategy is called sandbagging and in a derby that means avoiding contact with other cars. To follow that strategy, some drivers refuse to be aggressive or pretend to have mechanical problems until the last two or three cars are running. Then suddenly, their cars start running just fine and they become more aggressive. Also, some demolition derby drivers are women.

Bicycle Trends for 2021 SOURCE: Various

If you tried to purchase a bicycle in 2020, you probably found that in many stores they were completely sold out. With pandemic concerns running high last year, many people turned to bicycling as the perfect outdoor activity to get exercise and relieve some of the stress in their lives. Demand skyrocketed and with factories closing down due to the pandemic, supply chain issues skyrocketed as well. The possibility that demand will remain high is very real in 2021. That said here is some 2021 bicycle information you may find helpful if you do decide to go bike shopping as we enter this year’s summer recreation season. The Perfect Bike Whether you’re looking for a bike to cruise the neighborhood, for your kids or for off-road adventures, there is a perfect bike for you. You might find your perfect bike at Walmart or Target, your local bike shop downtown, or online. In general, you can buy a good bike for just a few hundred dollars, with prices going up from there. Here is a quick list of bike types and where they are best suited for riding: • Road Bikes: Best for riding on smooth, asphalted roads. • Mountain Bikes: Best for riding off road. • Hybrid Bikes: Very popular choice for bike commuters, thanks to their versatility. • Touring Bikes: Built for the road less travelled. These also make excellent commuter bikes if you have to deal with rough city roads. Continued on page 40

Bicycle Trends Continued from page 39

One trend on the higher end is that a number of manufacturers are now working towards a “one bike” production approach in different categories. What that means is that if they are building a mountain bike, they are going to try to create a single version that has all the capabilities for that style of bike. You may not need all the capabilities all the time, but when you do they will be there. The E-Bike Last year, e-bikes hit the streets and become very popular. E-bikes, which are motor-assisted bikes

and offer various levels of “pedal assist,” are difficult to tell apart from a traditional road bike. The e-bike trend is expected to continue and grow. The pedal-assist feature gives you a motorized boost whenever you need it. For instance, if you’re pedaling up a long hill and it looks like you’ll have to hop off the bike and walk it the rest of the way, the boost from pedal assist will let you stay on the bike and keep pedaling. Some e-bikes also have a pure throttle capability. That can let you pedal a longer distance and then if you need to, you can enjoy the ride home without so much work. You literally ride home with just the twist of the throttle. In Short Supply 2020 threw the bike industry into turmoil. Manufacturing, shipping, raw materials, delivery and staffing were all disrupted by the pandemic. It is expected in the bike industry that everything in 2021 will be in short supply. If you are looking to buy a new bike, whether from Walmart, your local bike shop or online, you should be looking for your bike right now to avoid disappointment and potential delivery delays.

Nearby Family Campgrounds SOURCE: Various

Summer is absolutely one of the best times to go camping not only in our area, but across the entire state of Pennsylvania. Two nearby family campground favorites are Don Laine Campground in the Palmerton area where you can “ruff” it with your pooch, and the Blue Rocks Family Campground situated on more than 100 acres of beautiful forest with mountain streams and hiking trials and also known for its breathtaking blue rocks boulder field. Poconos Camping In the Poconos you will be surrounded with outdoor beauty and relaxation and are likely to have a rustic camping trip with a few extra amenities. You can choose from tent sites and RV sites, to camping cabins and even some “glamping” options. There are literally dozens of campground locations throughout the region. Although pitching

a tent in your backyard is fun, why not enjoy a change of scenery? Quick Pocono Options • Want a site with a view? River Beach Campsites offers riverfront camping along the beautiful Delaware River. • In addition to Don Laine Campground there are other pet-friendly accommodations that will let you include your four-legged best friend in your vacation fun. • If you’re looking for something a little off the grid, campgrounds like Jim Thorpe Camping Resort, a 28-acre wooded campground, offer bare bone sites for a true “roughing it” wilderness experience. No equipment? No problem! Most campsites in the Poconos are furnished with everything you need: a fire ring, picnic table, water, electric, technology and restrooms. In the Poconos most campgrounds are family-owned and spread out across acres of wooded property with a wide range of outdoor adventure activities close at hand. You can view an extensive list of campgrounds

in the Poconos here: https://www. poconomountains.com/places-to-stay/ campgrounds/. Camping Near Quakertown Heading a little south towards the Quakertown area you can also find a good number of familyfriendly campgrounds to enjoy. Little Red Barn Campground in Bucks County is well rated and has been run by the same Roeder Family for more than 45 years. The campground offers RV and tent camping, aand at least one onsite RV rental if you don’t have your own rig. The Tohickon Family Campground is located between Bucks County's Lake Towhee County Park and Pennsylvania State's Lake Nockamixon State Park. The owners promote its location, just 20 minutes south of the Lehigh Valley, as being centrally located and perfect for families and outdoor enthusiasts. No matter where you decide to go camping this year, have a great time!
