Community and Matters of Health

Over the next couple of weeks we will really start to see the first signs of spring. After a cold winter, although ours has not really been that bad, one of the things that happens is that the community blossoms again. Businesses will soon be grabbing

our attention by putting merchandise out front, outdoor seating will appear at restaurants and start filling with customers, and in general, the community will start reconnecting.

We scouted around to see where we could make a connection of our own and found the amazing Kushy Boutique. It was a great pleasure speaking with owner Lynn Minnelli about her business. Along the way we found out how she and her husband created their “family of vendors” with artisans and craftspeople largely from our region, but also from about 28 states around the country. It’s a great story from right here in our community. Be sure to read “In Our Community: Kushy Boutique” for all the details.

You may not be aware that many of the communities in our area are part of the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor, which includes the “D&L Trail” that runs along our canals. This is a very vital recreational and national historic resource right at our fingertips. We’ll give you an overview of the Corridor and tell you where you can find precise information about any of the Corridor areas you might like to explore in the coming months. Corridor and Trail” for very valuable information you can use.

Also in this issue we are continuing our look at various areas of health that can affect anyone –

ourselves or someone we care about. Health issues that impact the brain are very serious so we start by giving you six tips on how to keep your brain healthy. You will find them in “6 Tips for a Healthy Brain.”

In addition to the article on how to keep your brain healthy, we will also look at ten myths and related facts surrounding one of the key disruptions that can happen in the brain, the brain tumor. See “Brain Tumor Myths” for more information.

And finally, if you’ve ever had a colonoscopy you know it’s not really that big a deal. The “prep” is something to be dealt with of course, but that’s about it. That said if you have never had one, you might find the guide to “The ‘Dreaded’ Colonoscopy” a comforting read.

So that is our issue this time around. Be sure and join us next time for our first true issue of spring when we turn our attention to one of my favorite topics: gardening. See you then!

6 Tips for a Healthy Brain

SOURCE: mayoclinichealthsystem.org (edited)

According to the Mayo Clinic Health System, changes to your body and brain are normal as you age. However, there are some things you can do to help slow any decline in memory and lower your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or other dementias.

1. Exercise regularly. Exercise has many known benefits, including

for the brain. Multiple research studies show that people who are physically active are less likely to experience a decline in mental function and have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. These benefits to the brain result from increased blood flow to your brain during exercise. That tends to counter some of the natural reduction in

brain connections that occur during aging. Aim to exercise several times per week for 30 to 60 minutes. You can walk, swim, play tennis or do any other moderate aerobic activity that increases your heart rate.

2. Get plenty of sleep.

Sleep plays an important role in your brain health. Some theories state that sleep helps clear abnormal proteins in your brain and consolidates memories, which boosts your overall memory and brain health.

Aim for seven to eight consecutive hours of sleep per night, not fragmented sleep of two- or threehour increments. Sleep apnea, which causes interrupted sleep, harms your brain's health. If you suspect you have sleep apnea talk to your doctor.

3. Eat a Mediterranean diet.

Your diet plays a large role in your brain health. Studies show people who closely follow a Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes plant-based foods, whole grains, fish and healthy fats, such as olive oil, are less likely to have Alzheimer's disease than people who don't.

The omega fatty acids found in extra-virgin olive oil and other healthy fats are vital for our cells to

function correctly. Those fats appear to decrease risk of coronary artery disease, increase mental focus and slow cognitive decline in older adults. A Mediterranean diet also incorporates less red meat and salt than a typical American diet.

4. Stay mentally active.

Your brain is similar to a muscle – you need to use it or lose it. There are many things that you can do to keep your brain in shape, such as doing crossword puzzles or Sudoku, reading, playing cards or putting together a jigsaw puzzle. Consider it cross-training for your brain. To increase the effectiveness, incorporate different types of activities. Finally, don't watch too much TV, which is a passive activity and does little to stimulate your brain.

5. Remain socially involved.

Social interaction helps ward off depression and stress, which can contribute to memory loss. Research links solitary confinement to brain atrophy. Look for opportunities to connect with loved ones, friends and others, especially if you live alone.

6. Keep your blood vessels healthy.

The health of your arteries and veins is important to your heart health, but it is also critical for brain health. Get your blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol checked regularly and take steps to keep your numbers within a normal range. Do that by increasing your physical activity, eating a Mediterranean diet and decreasing your sodium consumption to lower blood pressure and cholesterol values.

Finally, tobacco and alcohol use impact your brain health as well. Only drink alcohol in moderation and don't smoke. Moderate drinking is defined as up to one drink per day for women and up to two per day for men.

In Our Community: Kushy Boutique

As I sit down to write this article I am just off the phone from a super enjoyable call with Lynn Minnelli, the owner of Kushy Boutique at 4622 Lehigh Drive in Walnutport – that’s at the intersection of Routes 248 and 946. I called Lynn because I had been alerted to the fact that her Kushy Boutique, which opened in 2018, is a tremendous store featuring the work of artisans and crafters not only from our local region, but also from 28 states across the U.S.

Everything in Kushy Boutique is made in the USA. That’s an easy concept to understand, but I asked Lynn if there was another level of reasoning for why they only have USA-made products. She explained that she and her husband are both artisan-crafters themselves and it was important to each of them to place the focus of the Boutique on the “so many talented craftsmen and artisans in the area and the US that people often overlook.”

Kushy’s “Family of Vendors”

Right off the bat Lynn told me about Kushy’s “family of vendors” – a total of 80 artisans and crafters each represented in their own area in the store. Approximately forty are from within an hour’s drive and the others are from those 28 states across the nation. Included in the mix is an award-winning producer of BBQ sauce from Tennessee, a goat milk soap producer

this family of vendors? It turns out that Lynn, who does seasonal wreaths and woodworking, and her husband who does laser signs – both of them do custom work – used to travel a great deal to do craft shows. The reality was however, that business on the road was not predictable. After a good number of years they decided to stop the traveling and opted instead for the more stable environment

of an actual store.

The interesting thing is that in the first year of the store, they actually continued to do a great deal of travel to more craft shows. In that year however the time spent was to put the word out about Kushy Boutique and the opportunity for artisans and crafters in their network to participate

in the store, which has now become a major outlet for artisans and crafters.

Great Range of Product

In addition to the artisans mentioned earlier from around the nation, Lynn spoke of phenomenal work from her PA woodworking artisans that ranges from small and custom tables, to signs and walking sticks. She said many of the woodworkers are retired, but “at the top of their game.”

When you visit Kushy Boutique you’ll also find eye-catching jewelry, “amazing” embroidery work from a “thread artist” from New Jersey, and a great deal more, including gluten-free and vegan food items. With so much to offer its customers, some have asked Lynn and her husband why they don’t get a bigger store, which could involve moving out of Walnutport. Lynn explains they have “no plans to move out of the area” adding, “the community people here are just wonderful.”

Free Ham Radio Classes Start On March 7

Starting on March 7, the Delaware Lehigh Amateur Radio Club, Inc. will offer free classes for people who would like to obtain an amateur radio license. The class will run for 10 weeks and will prepare students to take the Federal Communications Commission’s Amateur basic license examination.

Ham radio has played an important role in communications for more than 100 years and continues to do so. It is part of many emergency

management plans because it can be used to communicate if landline telephone lines, cell towers and/or electric grids fail.

It also is a fun hobby for people who enjoy talking with amateur radio operators locally and around the world, participating in contests and field days, and even making contact with the International Space Station.

According to the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), the nationally recognized organization for ham radio operators, there are more than 750,000 amateur radio license holders in the United States and more than 3 million worldwide.

Based in Bethlehem, the Delaware Lehigh Amateur Radio Club (DLARC) has more than 100 members. It is a non-profit 501(C)(3) charitable organization. Classes are offered as a community service.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC –formerly known as the 911 Center) at 100 Gracedale Avenue in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. For details or to register, contact KE3AW@arrl.netor call 610419-9286

The Schneck House - Pride of Schnecksville

Standing along Route 873 as you come to the Schnecksville Shopping Center, sits the oldest house in North Whitehall Township called the Schneck House. It was built in mid 1700’s by Adam Schneck and his family. They were recent immigrants from SW Germany. The house was only a one story log house. Most likely his grandchildren added the second floor but that the house still stands is a testimonial to the Schneck family.

The house is important to me but we wish to know that the house is important to you. We would love to share its history and learn about the lands that surround it. Help us preserve this piece of early American history that is right in your backyard.

We are looking at a 200-year-old plus log house which had withstood the test of time. It even had a major transportation move across the Route 873 to a tract of land in 1994. This land was dedicated by the Kern Family who are Schneck descendants. The ULHS has made sure to keep its authenticity from the outside to the inside. But now the cedar

shingle roof needs repairs.

The Upper Lehigh Historical Society was formed to maintain the building structure. Our Schneck cousin, Gail Miller, of Pennsville, NJ, donated her Longaberger baskets, pottery and wrought iron items to us. Now we are passing her inventory of over 140 baskets and more to our many community friends. The President of the ULHS whose name is ironically Adam Schneck shared this quote, “The house is important to me but we wish to know that the house is important to you. We would love to share its history and learn about the lands that surround it. Help us preserve this piece of early American history that is right in your backyard.”

The D&L National Heritage Corridor

and Trail

SOURCE: delawareandlehigh.org (edited)

Running through many of the communities in our region is the Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and Trail, known as the “D&L”. The D&L is steeped in the history of our region from the earliest days of canal commerce.

The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor preserves, interprets and leverages the nationally significant history of the over 165-mile transportation route between Wilkes-Barre and Bristol, Pennsylvania – from the canals to the mountaintops of the Appalachians.

Here at the Gazette we plan to share further information on the D&L and look at some of its specific recreational activities in our June “Summer Fun” issue. But in this issue we just want to give you a brief overview of the D&L Trail and National Heritage Corridor.

The Heritage Corridor

The health and wellness components are obvious with the wealth of outdoor opportunity from actively hiking or biking and boating to birdwatching, photography and more along the historic transportation route, the D&L Trail.

By connecting and preserving both the D&L Trail and the Corridor, cities and small towns can capture the economic opportunities it provides. And then again through education and conservation, the Trail and Corridor connect us with the beauty of nature and the environment.

Information Resource

The D&L Trail has many segments from one end to the other. Through our area some of the sections of the D&L include the Parryville and Lehighton Spurs, Marvin Gardens in Weissport and the Lehigh Gap in Slatington.

By visiting www.delawareandlehigh.org, you will be able to find information on each segment. It is a very helpful resource to use as you plan a daytrip or longer outdoor adventure that’s close to home.

To give you just one example of the information you will find segment by segment, what follows is what the site provides for the Lehigh Gap in Slatington. In addition to this kind of information, you can also find out about the current conditions of a trail segment and whether or not there are current or planned closings.

Here is some of the information provided regarding the Lehigh Gap: “This section connects trailheads at Lehigh Gap and Slatington. At the northern trailhead, the Appalachian Trail intersects the D&L Trail, providing additional hiking opportunities. In Slatington, visit the local pizza joint, buy drinks and snacks, and take a side trip up the Slate Heritage Trail along Trout Creek.

18 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || March 2, 2023

When the Slatington Trailhead parking lot is full, it is easy to make the short drive across the bridge to Walnutport and park at the Walnutport Canal Association parking lot. The Lehigh Gap Trailhead is also near a Lehigh River Water Trail access point called Lehigh Gap. Please refer to Wildlands Conservancy’s Lehigh River Water Trail website, www.wildlandspa.org/lrwt-map/ for more information on trips along the water trail.”

So as you can see, the D&L Trail and Heritage Corridor provide incredible outdoor opportunities for each of us and www. delawareandlehigh.org is the place to start to gather your information on any segment along the way.

If you’ve ever had a colonoscopy, you know that certain aspects of the “prep” tend to be the unpleasant part. During the actual procedure however, you are generally sedated, so the whole thing is over and done before you even know it.

If you have never had a colonoscopy, you might have a certain amount of dread about it, but you

don’t really need to. Here’s some information to give you an idea of what to expect.

Before the Colonoscopy

When your doctor first says you need to have a colonoscopy, you will want to advise him or her about any special medical conditions you have. Those can include allergies to medications, any heart of lung conditions and also pregnancy.

If you have diabetes or take medications that may affect blood clotting you also need to let the doctor know. Medication adjustments may be required before the procedure. As would always be the case, you never want to stop taking any

medication without first consulting your doctor.

Prep for a Colonoscopy

There may be some diet or fluid restrictions before you have a colonoscopy. This can vary based on your personal doctor's instructions. You may also be asked to take laxatives by mouth as part of your preparation.

One other thing you need to do is arrange for a driver to bring you home after the procedure. Because you receive sedating medication during the procedure, it is unsafe for you to drive or operate machinery for 8 hours afterwards.

During the Colonoscopy

The colonoscopy will last approximately 30-60 minutes. Medications will be given to you intravenously to make you feel relaxed and drowsy. Right before you dose off, you will be asked to lie on your left side on the examining table.

During the colonoscopy, your doctor will use a colonoscope, a long, flexible, tubular instrument to examine the inside of your colon. During the procedure, the colonoscope, which has a light and lens on the end and a tool to remove samples of tissue, will transmit an image of the lining of your colon so the doctor can examine it for any abnormalities.

The colonoscope is inserted through the rectum and advanced to the other end of the large intestine. The scope bends, so the doctor can move it around the curves of your colon. It also blows air into your colon, which expands the colon and helps the doctor see things more clearly.

If the doctor sees something during the colonoscopy that may be abnormal, small amounts of tissue can be removed for analysis – this is called a biopsy – and abnormal growths, or polyps, can be identified and removed. In many cases where there’s an issue, a colonoscopy allows accurate diagnosis and treatment without the need for a major operation.

After the Colonoscopy

After the colonoscopy you will wake up in the recovery room where you will stay for about 30 minutes for observation. Any cramping or sensation of having gas usually passes quickly.

When you are discharged, be sure to read your discharge instructions carefully. If biopsies were taken or polyps removed you may need to avoid certain medications temporarily, such as bloodthinning agents, per the doctor’s direction. That said there is good news: You will be able to resume your normal diet.

Brain Tumor Myths

SOURCE: memorialhermann.org (edited)

Having a brain tumor – a mass of abnormal cells in the brain – is a complex condition that is often misunderstood. Patients who develop brain tumors can have very different experiences. It all depends on the type, size and rate of growth of the tumor.

Because the signs and symptoms of brain tumors, as well as their diagnosis and treatment, are complex and varied, they often leave many people feeling confused about the condition. Here are ten brain tumor myths and the facts of the matter.

MYTH #1: All brain tumor patients have the same symptoms.

Each person who is diagnosed with a brain tumor will have a different set of symptoms. These symptoms may include changes in sensation, weakness, auditory changes, headaches or visual changes.

MYTH #2: Frequent headaches and blurred vision are common signs of brain cancer.

More often, headaches with vision changes indicate migraines, cluster headaches, tension headaches or other common types of pain and discomfort. However, if you have persistent headaches or blurred vision that do not get better with the usual medications or that occur with persistent nausea or vomiting, you should promptly see your physician for a more thorough evaluation.

MYTH #3: Artificial sweeteners cause brain tumors.

Artificial sweeteners have not been shown to cause brain tumors. Some foods, food processing and food additives have been shown to contribute to certain forms of cancer, but there is no evidence

of their effect on brain tumors.

MYTH #4: Cell phones and microwaves cause brain tumors.

This myth does not have any scientific or physiological basis. Also, calcium is one of the best absorbers of radiation. The skull is made of calcium and would protect the brain from the radiofrequency radiation emitted by these devices.

MYTH #5: Dental X-rays cause brain tumors.

Decades ago, exposure to dental X-rays was associated with an increased risk of developing

brain tumors. Today, dental X-ray technology uses lower radiation doses, with newer machines that use less power and are able to focus more narrowly.

MYTH #6: Genetics determine who will develop a brain tumor.

While some cancers may run in families, there is no evidence of a genetic predisposition to developing a brain tumor. Patients with childhood leukemia may have an increased risk of developing a brain tumor, but it is not tied to genetics.

MYTH #7: Brain tumors are a rare form of cancer. Brain tumors are the leading cause of solidcancer death in children under the age of 20. Brain tumors are the third-leading cause of solid-cancer death in young adults, ages 20 to 39.

MYTH #8: All brain tumors are deadly. Not all brain tumors are deadly. However, both malignant and benign brain tumors can lead to death and therefore need treatment. New treatment options make brain tumors more manageable, improve overall quality of life and lengthen life expectancy.

MYTH #9: Brain tumors do not return after

treatment.

Both benign and malignant brain tumors can recur. Following up with a specialist is important to determine if/when a tumor has returned. Additionally, some treatment options have longterm side effects that need to be monitored.

MYTH #10: Life goes back to “normal” once a patient’s treatment plan is complete.

Depending on the type of brain tumor and the course of treatment, patients may experience longterm effects. When treatment ends, many patients feel a sense of relief but also uncertainty about the path forward. Often, patients will need to adapt to a “new normal” way of living.

Semper....Semper Fi perhaps? Yes! He is always faithful! This sweet boy wants nothing more than your love and attention. He is a Labrador Retriever mix, 48 lbs, and about 1 year old. He should be just about full grown but could afford to gain a few pounds. Because he

was a bit undernourished, he would eat quickly and be unhappy when other dogs were nearby. He eats more calmly now, and while not necessarily up for sharing his food, he doesn't growl anymore. He is timid of cats, so nice ones are just fine with him. He enjoys being outdoors and also cuddling on your couch. He needs some work with crate training but is doing well in his kennel at the shelter, so making crate training a positive experience for him would be best. Semper is heartworm positive and will be treated prior to adoption. So, a foster to adopt family is what Semper is looking for until his treatment is complete. The Steam Engine

1600s – that a man in Germany by the name of Otto von Guericke figured out how to build an engine that made power with pistons in cylinders and ran with steam. The fire to make that steam was fed with wood chips or coal or straw. Over the next 200 years several people in Germany and England and in our country built similar engines each with some improvements over the other.

For many years those engines were not selfpropelled. Some of those engines were large and heavy. To move a threshing rig from farm to farm required four horses to pull a 6000 pound engine. And it also required four horses to pull the threshing machine, as well as two horses to pull the water tender.

The steam engine could do many kinds of work on the farm. But the steam engine was also used to run saw mills and river boats and large ships. And we dare not forget about the many years that the steam engine pulled railway cars. And many of us also know about the large steam engines that were used to steam the ground to kill weed seeds before tobacco seeds

were sown. Steam engines made work lighter for people and for horses. But they were heavy and unhandy and dirty and dangerous.

By the mid-1800s people began to make steam tractors that were self-propelled on steel crawler tracks. In a few years the tractors had steel wheels with cleats. After they had tracks or wheels, the tractors could be used to plow and harrow and plant. From about 1870 to 1930 there were approximately 125 tractor factories in our country.

It was close to the end of the 1800s that the farmers in the prairie lands

began to persistently beg for a tractor that could pull plows. By 1900 there were tractors in existence that weighed 45,000 pounds [Some actually weighed up to 75,000 pounds!] and had wheels about three feet wide. These could pull as high as a 20 bottom plow and tore up the prairie sod in order to plant wheat. Much wheat came from the prairie lands. But when the dry years came in the 1930s millions of tons of good soil were blown away as dust.

From about 1900 until 1930 steam was king of power in factories, on the farm, on the water and on the railroad. About that same time oil wells were being set up in Pennsylvania. At first the interest was in kerosene. Gasoline was not valued very highly and was often poured into the river. But during the years that the steam engine was at its best, people built another kind of engine that ran with gasoline. Around the year 1930 the last steam tractors were built.

[This article was from a Fereinict Pennsylfawnish Deitsch Fulk, Inc. Spring publication for the year 2002.

I don’t believe Otto von Guericke (1602 – 1686) build a steam engine; rather he experimented with the concept of creating vacuum chambers and pumps. But that knowledge was critical in developing the steam powered engines in the future.

The first commercially used steam-powered device, a steam pump, was developed by Thomas Savery (c. 1650 – 1715) an English inventor and engineer. It was used to drain water from the mines and power equipment in factories. About 20 years later, Thomas Newcomen (1663-1729), a blacksmith, made major improvements to Savery design and they formed a company together to promote the new design.

Other improvements were made on their design. Probably the most important was by James Watt (1736-1819) who added a separate condenser to the design in 1765. If you are interested in this technology, Mr. Google can help you find more information on the development of the steam engine.

If steam powered tractors interest you, check out the Rough and Tumble Historical Assn. website (https:// roughandtumble.org/ ) for events at their place near Kinzers, PA.]
