Strength in Community By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

How do you think of your community? Is it family, family and friends, neighbors on the block? Or is it everyone in your town, like Walnutport or Slatington or Bath? It won’t surprise me if you actually feel a connection to several communities. Since 2020, we have all been under the stress of the global health situation, but closer to home things are easing. And now in 2022 we need to reconnect with our communities and feel the strength of those connections. So in this issue we’re B L U E M O U N TA I N

going to look at several ways to connect with our communities from volunteering, to getting kids involved and more. Let’s start with the kids. Kids have great energy and they can be natural artists, but they also have short attention spans. Read “Teaching Kids Community Involvement” for tips and great ideas on how to teach kids to get involved in their community for the benefit of others. In addition to gaining a broader understanding of the lives of others in their community, the kids might pick up some new skills. In our regional community, we wanted to look at two stellar businesses in this issue. Read “In the Community: Harding Funeral Home” to learn about a second-generation family business that has been serving the greater Northern Lehigh community with excellence since 1954. You will also learn about some truly interesting new services they will soon be making available to their customers. Heading over to Danielsville we focus on our other local business The Filbert Bed & Breakfast. We spoke to the owner about this beautiful B&B and event venue that still has that “personal touch” Continued on page 4

we often think of when we think of bygone eras. Read all about it in “Quaint & Quiet: The Filbert Bed & Breakfast.” If your life is anything like mine, every now and then it needs a little streamlining – especially in terms of the “extra stuff” that accumulates over time. In “Donate to Streamline Your Life” we will identify a few categories of items that may have no further value to you, but could make a real

difference in someone else’s life. We’ll suggest donating instead of just throwing them out. And finally, volunteering in any way for your community – even online – can have a hidden benefit for you. Studies have shown a loneliness “epidemic” in our country, which the pandemic certainly has not helped, but volunteering has been proven to fight that sense of loneliness. We will tell you more in “Fight Loneliness with Community Volunteering.” So please enjoy this issue and join us next time when the issue topic will be one of my personal favorites: Gardening!

In the Community: Harding Funeral Home By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

For this issue we wanted to look “in the community” to profile an important local business. We decided to tell you about the Harding Funeral Home in Slatington that has been serving the greater Northern Lehigh community since 1954. As a community business, in addition to its funeral services, Harding Funeral Home has been consistently involved for a number of years in charitable activities in our area. And now, in its most current news, it is just weeks away from bringing technology enhancements to its funeral services that will provide significant new value to its customers. The Coat Drive One current example of the way the business works to support the community is its annual Coat Drive that has been taking place for at least the past five years. The Coat Drive provides coats to those in the community who can really use them. According to president/owner David M. Harding whom we spoke to for this article, there has always been a significant turnout of people donating coats each year, but this winter, participation was greater than ever before. “Many hundreds of coats were donated for distribution within the community,” says Harding. Harding said many vans were filled with coats that were then distributed to the community through the Northern Lehigh Food Bank, as well as another organization we’ve written about recently in the Gazette, Caring Hearts. Funeral Services If you have used Harding Funeral Home for its funeral services, you have probably experienced its almost “one-stop shop” capabilities that are offered in that difficult and unsettling time of grief. Not only can Harding Funeral Home take care of the arrangements you would expect, like flowers and casket and tombstone, but if the deceased is a Veteran or there are insurance or social security matters to be handled, they can handle all those matters for the family as well. New Capabilities Coming Soon At the time of this writing, Harding Funeral Home is on the verge of implementing some very interesting new technology enhancements that MARCH 3, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com

will bring positive benefit for the families of the dearly departed. First and foremost they will soon be able to offer the capability to stream and videotape the funeral service. The streaming capability will allow those who cannot physically attend the service, whether for health or any other reasons, to nonetheless watch the service live as it takes place. David Harding, the cameras and wiring are already in place and the final testing is going on to determine how best to use the capabilities of the new technology platform. The streaming of each service will run off the Internet, but additional work is being done to also offer it directly through the Harding Funeral Home

website. Once a service is able to be viewed on the website, it will also be stored there so family and friends may access the recording at any point in the future. Finally, families will be provided with the video recording of the service on a memory stick. From there they can share the service with others directly at any time. According to David Harding, everything should be fully functioning in just the next couple of weeks.

make sure to have healthy, allergy-friendly snacks to keep their energy up. Outdoor Community Outreach Ideas • School Cleanup - Choose a local school that needs some love. Have kids pick up trash or even plant some fresh flowers and trees. • Sports Camp - Do your kids have special sports talents? Organize a free sports camp for local kids who would love to learn from them, and your kids will learn the value of sharing knowledge with others.

Teaching Kids Community Involvement SOURCE: signupgenius.com (edited)

Teaching kids the importance of getting involved in their local community is an important part of their education. It allows them to engage at their own comfort level, while still experiencing the many benefits of doing good for others. These tips and ideas will help you set up your group of kids for success in your next community outreach. Advance Preparations • Keep it Age Appropriate - This is especially true if the outreach idea will expose kids to real situations they may not be emotionally prepared to process. • Consider Time of Day- Choose a day and time that will allow kids to be at their best. For example, choose a time after they’ve had a meal and won’t be too tired. • Prepare for Breaks - Kids have a lot of energy, but that doesn’t mean they can sustain long periods of activities without a break. Plan for regular breaks. • Bring Snacks - Hungry kids can’t focus, so

Creative Community Outreach Ideas • Art for All - Kids are natural artists. Have kids create art that can be donated to an elderly home, to a local children’s shelter, or other places to cheer people up. • Ultimate Lemonade Stand - Remember those lemonade stands that popped up on street corners in the heat of summer? Put together the ultimate lemonade stand, with different flavors, excellent marketing in advance, music and a great cause. When people know they’ll get lemonade and help a great local cause, you’ll end up needing more lemonade! Chilly out? Try hot cocoa or spiced cider. Relationship-Building Community Outreach Ideas • Elderly Home Visits - From singing seasonal songs to playing board games, seniors love visits from local youth. Choose activities best suited to your kids’ age range and have some fun. • Visit a Children’s Hospital - Kids who are enduring long-term treatments at children’s hospitals miss out on a lot. children’s hospital to see if there is a way for your group of kids to cheer them up. Ideas range from reading stories to younger kids, playing games with older kids, or organizing an art day. Provide for the Community • Habitat for Humanity - Sponsor a new home for a family in need and spend time building that home with Habitat for Humanity. This is an activity teens and older kids will really enjoy, and they’ll leave with a wealth of new skills and understanding. • Shoe Drive - It’s amazing how many people have shoes they have barely worn that are gathering dust in a closet somewhere. Plan a local shoe drive to collect as many gently worn shoes as possible and donate them to local charities. • Pack Backpacks - Many kids aren’t able to get a backpack and supplies for a new school year. Have your group get donations from local businesses and then pack new backpacks with supplies to deliver to schools for kids in need.

Quaint & Quiet: The Filbert Bed & Breakfast

By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette

You may not know this, but in nearby Danielsville there is a charming – actually a “quaint and quiet” bed and breakfast called The Filbert Bed & Breakfast. Maybe you do know it. Perhaps you’ve been there for a private “Country Tea” or bridal shower, or even an actual wedding. As it celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year – a major milestone for any small business, but especially in the hospitality industry, the Filbert B&B with its vintage barn and beautiful grounds is known for exactly those kinds of events. In speaking with Owner/Innkeeper Kathy Lorah-Silfies we learned that the Filbert was built in the early 1800s as a Victorian Farmhouse and General Store. After purchasing the property and a major restoration that began in 2002, the property was transformed into the charming, welcoming, relaxing Filbert Bed & Breakfast – truly from a bygone era. breakfast was high on her bucket list. When she speaks of the Filbert Bed & Breakfast, which is beautifully situated on six acres at the foothills of the Blue Mountains in the Lehigh Valley, she says, “It really is quaint and quiet.” Outstanding Location Kathy describes her B&B as possibly “the most supremely well located bed & breakfast in northeast Pennsylvania.” Over the years, guests at the Filbert have come from near and far, many very specifically for the location that is so convenient to all our region offers. addition to wedding showers and actual weddings, the Filbert is the perfect location to enjoy a very personalized and local “staycation.” For the guests who have traveled great distances, and that has included guests from Italy, Australia and even Alaska, the Filbert’s location is often the main attraction due to the range of outdoor activities that are so convenient to it year-round. Those activities range from skiing in the winter to kayaking and particularly for the international traveler, the opportunity to hike the world-famous Appalachian Trail. But of course those outdoor activities are not the only ones you can access so easily from the Filbert. As we all know as residents in this region we have antiquing, farmer and flea markets, historical towns and all the rest. Pride of Ownership One of the things you will immediately notice at the Filbert Bed & Breakfast is the absolute pride of ownership. Kathy is so proud of what the property has turned into and delivers for the guest. It is a very “personal touch” experience at the

Filbert. Kathy herself stays very connected with historic societies, the Chamber of Commerce and others so she can completely convey the latest on our region’s offerings to her guests, which allows her to help personalize each guest’s experience to their specific interests. In terms of current and future plans, Kathy says, “We are transitioning to more use of the property.” The vintage barn for instance now hosts more events, including weddings. For the history buff, the property itself has all its old outer buildings for exploration and appreciation; everything the original pioneers needed to live their lives including an ice house, the old outhouse, a root cellar, the vintage barn and more. In a way, the property is part museum for the enjoyment of guests. Kathy is looking forward to a great spring, summer and fall this year with a full roster of events from showers to weddings and teas. There’s that old saying that people “enter as strangers and leave as friends.” Kathy says that is what happens at the Filbert Bed & Breakfast.

Donate to Streamline Your Life SOURCE: Various

There are many ways we can streamline our lives if that’s something we want to do. Oftentimes, clutter can be far more than just stuff that takes up space and gets in our way as we go about our daily routines. Clutter can really become a hassle. It is almost like background noise that is always there and always annoying as we try to accomplish other things.

In this article we’re going to look at some expert advice on throwing things out, specifically five core categories of items to discard. We’re also going to look at where in the community you might be able to donate those items. Donating items could make a real difference in someone else’s life – rather than just tossing them out with the trash. 5 Categories to Donate Here are five categories of things you could very possibly “re-home” as a donation to a shelter, a youth center, a church rummage sale and more:

1. Just-in-case items These items can usually be replaced, if need be, for less than $20 and in less than 20 minutes. If your stack of “just-in-case” items includes unused/ unopened toothpaste, toothbrushes and so forth or extra pairs of socks, contact a homeless shelter. Those kinds of items are often sorely needed and will be appreciated. 2. Stuff you never use / Extras and duplicates This often includes things like uncomfortable shoes, empty frames and containers, books you've already read or never plan on reading, knickknacks,

freebies or gifts you were given but don't like. Many of these items could probably find their way to a church rummage sale. 3. An abandoned hobby Be realistic about which hobbies you've moved on from and toss the related materials you're not using. Leftover hobby materials could go to youth centers, senior centers and potentially even to schools in your community. 4. Items from a past phase If you don't have a dog anymore and don't plan on getting a new one, give yourself permission to get rid of the dog bed, bowl and leash. And if you're retired, pack up the majority of your professional clothes and office supplies. The office supplies and dog items could go to a church rummage sale and the business clothes could go to an organization that provides good job-interview clothes to job seekers who otherwise can’t really afford them. 5. Clothes that don't fit Your closet should house items you look forward to wearing instead of being a place to cast aside what you know you're not going to wear. Continued on page 16

Fight Loneliness with Volunteering SOURCE: newyorktimes.com (edited)

Loneliness often stems from unwanted solitude. Studies have proven that a potential cure for loneliness is kindness toward others. Something as simple as volunteering can help relieve loneliness and improve our health while broadening our social networks. The AARP Foundation Experience Corps, an

intergenerational tutoring program, found numerous benefits to volunteering: More than 85 percent of volunteers felt that their lives had improved because of their involvement with the program and 98 percent reported that the program helped them stay physically and mentally active. Volunteering in Your Community Every community needs people volunteering to make it the best place it can be. Whether it’s a volunteering of time, services or other, giving to one’s community makes it stronger. Opportunities to give back – both in person and even virtually

[You probably noticed that their infinitives end with the letter ‘n’, as well as most plurals of nouns. The Yiddish ‘z’ is like our letter ‘z’; the German ‘z’ sound is representes by letters ‘ts’.] [Though Pennsylvania German and Yiddish are spoken by groups of people that are very different from one another, the two languages may be viewed as sisters, since both originated in the same area of Germany. Yiddish developed from the Middle High German dialects that were adopted by Jewish traders who migrated to the Rhineland from Italy and France, as early as the ninth century. The descendants of these early Jewish settlers began to be persecuted because of their religious beliefs after the first crusade (at the end of the eleventh century), and as a result, most left the Rhineland and migrated eastward, mainly to Poland, Lithuania, and Russia . Over the centuries, Eastern European Jews (who call themselves Ashkenazi, after the medieval Hebrew name for Germany, Ashkenaz) retained the variety of German that had been adopted in the Rhineland, gradually supplementing it with a substantial number of religious and philosophical words from Hebrew and Aramaic, and many common everyday words from Polish, Russian, and other Slavic language. Pennsylvania German developed essentially from later forms of Middle High German Rhineland dialects, designated more precisely as Early New High German Palatinate dialects. These dialects were spoken by large groups of Germans who began to settle in the English colony of Pennsylvania as early as 1683. It is important to remember, however, that these Palatinate Germans were joined not only by a good number of settlers from

other German-speaking areas, including Silesia and Switzerland, but also by Huguenots who had lived in various parts of Germany, and by Dutchspeaking settlers from the Netherlands. In time, the Palatinate dialects prevailed, although element from the other dialects, including family names, may still be found in the otherwise fairly homogeneous Pennsylvania German of today.] Source: A Lexical Comparison of Two Sister Languages: Pennsylvania German and Yiddish.
