This issue begins with acts of remembrance that we can each do to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country so that we may live as free a life in this country as possible. There are numerous ways to honor our fallen this Memorial Day. We look at them in “Annual Memorial Day Traditions.” We then make a respectful pivot to the summer ahead and many ideas for family get-togethers and more. You know, family picnics can be memorable things, but if you’re a busy, working family, a picnic can seem like one more thing on the “to-do” list. But it doesn’t have to be a chore. It can be as simple as picking up prepared foods at the store on the way home, to pulling out all the leftovers and creating a “potluck” picnic. We give you four great ideas for planning a picnic in “Fun Family Picnic Ideas.” Sticking with food, we wanted to take a look at some fun food festivals in our part of the Keystone State. Each of the festivals that caught our attention can be handled as a day trip – in most cases, an easy day trip – from our area. Find out more in “Unique Pennsylvania Food Festivals” that range from a mac and cheese festival, to a town knocking Continued on page 5

itself out to make the best hamburger you have ever tasted! Have you ever seen a waterfall up close? If you’re a hiker, a photographer, or just intrigued by waterfalls, you will definitely want to spend a few minutes reading “The Waterfalls of Delaware Water Gap.” Not only do we give you interesting facts about each of the six waterfalls in the Delaware Water Gap Recreational Area, but we also explain how waterfalls are created. It is great information all around, and two of the waterfalls we tell you about can be easily seen from a handicap-accessible trail. A visit to one or more of these waterfalls would be a great summer excursion to take with family or friends. Lastly, we take a look at some fresh, fun activities for a summer day – for both adults and kids. The summer is the time to be outdoors with family and friends and we give you some ideas for fun in “Fun Activities for a Summer Day.” So please enjoy this issue and then join us next time when we step into the month of June and look at farms, farmers and farmers markets. Until then! MAY 19, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com

Memorial Day Traditions SOURCE: Various
Memorial Day is about remembering those who died for our freedom. We owe them and their families a great debt of gratitude. For those who understand its meaning, Memorial Day is – as it should be – a solemn holiday. Memorial Day is not the same as Veterans Day. That holiday is in November and rightly celebrates and honors all, living and dead, who have served in our nation’s armed forces. On Memorial Day, families and communities across the nation take time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Americans observe this special holiday in many different ways. Here are some of the most popular annual Memorial Day traditions. Displaying the Flag / On Memorial Day, the U.S. flag should be displayed at half-staff until noon. In the morning, the flag should be raised momentarily to the top and then lowered to halfstaff. Americans can also honor prisoners of war

and those missing in action by flying the POW/ MIA flag. Visiting Grave Sites / Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because communities honored their war dead by decorating their graves with flowers. Many Americans make special flower arrangements and deliver them as a family to grave sites of their loved ones and ancestors. Participating in the National Moment of Remembrance / In accordance with a congressional resolution passed in 2020, Americans pause wherever they are at 3:00 p.m. local time for a moment of silence to remember and honor the fallen. Visiting Local Veterans’ Homes and Hospitals / Many living American veterans require long-term medical care or housing assistance, and they can often feel forgotten. The Memorial Day holiday is a great time to let them know that we appreciate their sacrifice and the sacrifices of their family and friends lost in battle. Attending Memorial Day Parades / The Memorial Day parade is a time-honored tradition in cities and towns across America. Neighbors come together to remember with pride those who sacrificed so much for our country. Experiencing the Nation’s Memorials / Memorial Day can also be an opportunity to visit or read about the national memorials in Washington D.C., as well as local memorials around the country. Brushing Up On Family and American History / Memorial Day is a favorite time for Americans to read their family history, look at old photographs and learn about their ancestors, especially those who died in the service of their nation. It’s also an occasion for reading Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and other historic and patriotic speeches by the presidents and leaders of the armed services. Wearing Memorial Day Poppies / The tradition of wearing red poppies on Memorial Day was inspired by the 1915 poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrea. War worker Moina Michael made a personal pledge to always wear red silk poppies as an emblem of “keeping the faith with all who died,” and began a tradition that was adopted in the United States, England, France, Australia and more than 50 other countries. Fun Family Picnic Ideas SOURCE: thespruceeats.com (edited)
Family picnics create lasting memories. For working parents with busy families, however, planning a picnic can feel like one more thing on the to-do list. But a picnic is no more complicated than a typical dinner inside – it can actually be easier – and should be seen as a fun family outing!
Weekday evening picnics can be as easy as a quick stop at the grocery store for prepared food, or a backyard barbecue with very little cleanup. You can even start a new tradition by marking days on your calendar and making picnics a recurring family event. Here are four ways to make this summer’s picnics fun, easy, and of course, delicious for the whole family. The Appetizer-Dipping Picnic Kids love to dip food – as do many adults, making this picnic not only easy, but also loads of Charles J Breidinger Broker Benjamin Real Estate 2254 Skyline Dr. Slatington, PA 18080 Office 610-767-1293 Cell 484-951-2468 Fax 610-767-9488 cjbreidinger@gmail.com www.bhhsbre.com Text: bhhscjb to: 87778 A member of the franchise system of BHH Affiliates, LLC.

fun. First, purchase the items to be dipped: French bread, chips, vegetable sticks, and olives for the adults. Next, decide on your dips. For a Mediterranean picnic, choose hummus and baba ganoush. Guacamole, salsa, and sour cream dips work well for any picnic. For the adults, try a crab dip. For dessert, a yogurt dip pairs nicely with wedges of fresh seasonal fruit. And of course, remember the drinks and napkins! The Supermarket Quick-Stop Picnic Picnic prep couldn't be easier than a quick stop at your local grocer. If you have time on your lunch break, pick up the food early in the day. You can also involve the kids in this targeted shopping excursion by allowing them to pick out their personal favorites for the special meal. Deli-prepared salads, pre-made sushi, take-out pizza, and grilled paninis or sandwiches all make good options for a family picnic. Add cheese and crackers as an appetizer and flavored seltzers for a fun drink. It doesn't matter where the food comes from – it's still a picnic if you eat it outside. The Backyard Grilling Picnic Picnics don't have to be fussy. In fact, you can have as much fun in your backyard as you can in a wooded park or playground. One nice thing about the backyard picnic is that it doesn’t require you pack everything and everyone into a car and drive somewhere. It also lends itself to a weeknight family "outing" or a hump day festivity that gets you through the workweek. Choose grill items that don't require much prep and can be eaten with your fingers or on bread or buns. Italian sausages, marinated chicken kebabs, MAY 19, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com
and the good ol' hamburger and hot dog make good choices. Your sides can be simple finger foods like carrot sticks, cantaloupe slices, and chips. Once you have your food decided, spread a blanket on your lawn, drag out a cooler full of iced drinks, and arrange a few beach chairs for your outdoor family feast. You can get the kids involved by having them prepare the outdoor setting, filling the cooler, or, if they're old enough, manning the grill. And if the home setting gets boring after a while, next time tote your grilling picnic to a park or local campground with on-site grills and picnic tables – and don't forget the s'more fixings! The Leftovers Picnic One way to make picnics no fuss is to utilize foods you have already prepared – also known as leftovers. A true picnic is just about being together, so cobble together slices of lasagna from the prior night, some steamed vegetables kept on hand, cheese and bread, and some individual beverages. When the ingredient of fresh air is added it will make the meal a whole new experience.

12 The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them. 13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son;

Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate. 25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ 28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’ 31 “ ‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ “ 17

Sarah Shaner, NAHS DECA president, Earns third place recognition at DECA’s International Career Development Conference Submitted by TARA MRAZIK
Three Northampton Area High School DECA members earned the organization’s highest honors at DECA’s Annual International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in Atlanta, GA on April 23-26. Ezekiel Colyer and Mitchell Mondschein were finalists for the Financial Services Team Decision Making Event and Sarah Shaner earned third place overall for the Financial Consulting Event. Sarah is a senior from Walnutport and has been in DECA the past four years. She is the Chapter President and Pennsylvania DECA State Officer. For 2021-2022, Sarah assumed the role of a financial consultant for a hypothetical client wishing to buy a home who was unsure if they would qualify for a mortgage. Sarah was expected to explain the four C’s of qualifying for a mortgage to her hypothetical client—capacity, credit, cash and collateral. Sarah took a 100-question test and gave her presentation about her topic. She won first place at States which qualified her for the ICDC. During the school year, approximately 100,000 of DECA’s 160,000 high school student members take part in the organization’s competitive events program, allowing them to compete for local, regional and state titles. The competitions are designed to simulate real life business scenarios and test students’ academic understanding and skills development. The Northampton Area High School DECA Chapter was started in 1976 by Mr. Pat Vulcano achieved much success during his tenure. Since 2001, when it was taken over by Tara Mrazik, there have been 26 students recognized on the international stage (including this conference). Having Sarah, Zeke, and Mitchell make it to the finals was quite a tremendous feat and celebrated by all of Northampton DECA. Having made the Top 20 overall, the three finalists then competed again in the final round. It was at the grand awards ceremony that Sarah’s name was announced as the Third Place winner. This was the first time that one of the NHS students earned the coveted “DECA Glass.” “Having competed in Financial Consulting for the past four years, it was especially meaningful for my hard work to finally pay off and be recognized at the international level. Sweeping study of pet dogs shows breed does not Predict behavior www.nature.com/articles/d41586-022-01193-1
Dog enthusiasts have long assumed that a dog’s breed shapes its temperament. But a sweeping study comparing the behavior and ancestry of more than 18,000 dogs finds that although ancestry does affect behavior, breed has much less to do with a dog’s personality than is generally supposed. “When you adopt a dog based on its breed, you’re getting a dog that looks a certain way,” says co-author Elinor Karlsson, a computational biologist at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. “But as far as behavior goes, it’s kind of luck of the draw.” Form over function That’s partly because breeds are something of a modern invention. Humans have been shaping how dogs look and behave since domestic dogs first evolved from wolves more than 10,000 years ago. But for most of that time, these efforts were focused on dogs’ working ability — how well they herded livestock, guarded against danger or pulled sledges, for example. Breeds as we think of them today — distinctive canines such as beagles, pugs and Labradors — are a by-product of more recent evolutionary meddling. Starting around 200 years ago, dog enthusiasts in Victorian England began inventing breeds by actively selecting for canine traits that they found aesthetically pleasing. This experimentation created today’s breeds. Contemporary purebred dogs are defined by their looks, but breed is also thought to influence temperament. The American Kennel Club, for instance, describes pugs as “mischievous” and border collies as “affectionate.” Wanting to get a better sense of how breed influences behavior, Karlsson and her colleagues surveyed thousands of dog owners about their pets’ backgrounds and activities, ranging from whether they had a propensity to eat grass to how likely they were to chase toys. The researchers then sequenced the DNA of a subsection of the survey dogs to see whether ancestry could be linked to behavior. The team found that some traits were more common in certain breeds. For example, compared with a random dog, German Shepherds were more easily directed; beagles, not so much. And the authors’ genetic studies revealed that mixed-breed 26
dogs with a particular ancestry were more likely to act in specific ways. Mutts with St. Bernard ancestry, for instance, were more affectionate, whereas mutts descended from Chesapeake Bay retrievers had a penchant for wrecking doors. But, on average, breed explained only around 9% of the variation in how a dog behaved, a number “much smaller than most people, including me, would have expected,” says Karlsson. Particularly low was the connection between breed and how likely a dog was to display aggressive behavior, which could have implications for how society treats “dangerous” dog breeds, says Evan MacLean, a comparative psychologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson who was not involved in the study. “We talk about breeds like they’re categorically different,” he says. “But in reality, that’s not the case.” Genetic analysis revealed 11 regions of the genome that are linked to specific behaviors. A tendency to howl, for example, was associated with a region near two genes whose human analogues are involved in speech. The most significant link was between a region of the genome that in humans is involved in cognitive performance — but in dogs increased the likelihood of getting stuck behind objects. These genetic traits have been around for much longer than breeds have existed, says Kelsey Witt, a population geneticist at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. “At first glance, it seems surprising that breed isn’t a good predictor” of behavior, she says. “But when you think about how recent breeds are, it makes sense.” News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || MAY 19, 2022

Prefers a Home Without Children. Meet Bento Bento is here! Bento is a recent arrival to the Sanctuary. But, if you follow the Philly shelters, you know that Bento is not new to the shelter system. Bento spent some time in a very stressful and overcrowded shelter and future looked very bleak. One of our amazing volunteers agreed to make the trip and give Bento another chance at a happy life. Let’s put an end to Bento’s time at the shelter and find him his furever home! Bento is a hound mix approx 2 years old. He loves to play fetch, knows sit and gives paw like a pro too. He will need to be cat tested yet and if there are other dogs in the home a meet and greet will need to be arranged. He does not do well in a crate (no surprise after what he’s been through). He would do best with a dog savvy, active family that will take him on lots of hikes and adventures. He has lots of energy and would do better in a home with older children as he may accidentally knock over little children.

Waterfalls Continued from page 28
the water flows over a vertical drop or a series of steep drops. Waterfalls can be formed in several ways, but the most common method is when a river flows over a top layer of resistant bedrock before coming to softer rock that erodes over time, creating an increasingly tall “fall.” Some waterfalls have three, four or more segments as the water tumbles from the highest point to the lowest. They are beautiful and exciting places to visit with family and friends, and photographers have always loved waterfalls for their beauty. Our region has many waterfalls to admire and photograph. Here are highlights for each of the six waterfalls in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Dingmans Falls / Dingmans Falls is a waterfall located in Dingmans Ferry in Delaware Township, Pike County. It has a vertical drop of 39.6 meters. It is near another waterfall in the area, Silverthread Falls and these are the two that are visible from a handicap-accessible trail. Bushkill Falls / Bushkill Falls is an incredible series of eight waterfalls – interestingly, they are each privately owned. The tallest drop in Bushkill Falls cascades over 100 feet. Bushkill Falls is located in Lehman Township, Pennsylvania in the Pocono Mountains. Silverthread Falls / Silverthread Falls is visible from a nearby handicap-accessible trail and is located in Dingmans Ferry in Delaware Township, Pike County. It has a vertical drop of 24.3 meters. Deer Leap Falls / Deer Leap Falls is one of three waterfalls located in the George W. Childs Recreation Site, also in Pike County. Deer Leap, as well as Factory Falls and Fulmer Falls are all located on Dingmans Creek. MAY 19, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com
Fulmer Falls / Fulmer Falls is the second waterfall located in the George W. Childs Recreation Site in Dingmans Ferry, Pike County. These falls are downstream from Factory Falls and upstream from Deer Leap Falls on the Dingmans Creek. With a 17 meter drop, it is the largest of the three. Factory Falls / Factory Falls is the third waterfall in the Childs Park of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area along with Deer Leap Falls and Fulmer Falls. Factory Falls is the furthest upstream and attracts more people than some of the other falls, in part because it is very easy to get to and get up close to. As you plan your summer family adventures, a visit to one or more of these waterfalls could be a great excursion. Summer Institute of Colonial East Allen Township Scout Arts offered by GWHS Earns Eagle rank Submitted by CAROL BEAR-HECKMAN
The Wolf Academy Historic Site is the heart of education in Pennsylvania. It is here that George Wolf attended school, later taught, and became the seventh Governor of Pennsylvania and the state’s “Father of Public Education.” With this heritage in mind the Governor Wolf Historical Society is offering “make it and take it” hands-on classes of 18th and 19th century colonial arts presented by talented artisans. These classes will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 9 and Friday, June 10. Two-day, one-day and half-day classes are being offered to choose from. Many of the instructors have taught at Landis Valley, Historic Bethlehem, Lancaster Mennonite HS and others. Classes will be held in the GWHS historic buildings. Breakfast will be provided by GWHS and lunch will be catered by local establishments. Classes are limited and registration must be submitted by May 30. This is the second annual summer institute offered by the Governor Wolf Historical Society. This year there are 10 classes being offered by well-known artists. The fee includes breakfasts and lunches catered by local eateries. Classes will be taught in various rooms of the three 18th century buildings owned by the society. Kick-start your summer by creating something with your own hands, something that you can use and appreciate everyday in your home. Tell your friends and get a group together. Interested participants may call or email Carol Bear at 610-390-0555 or ckbh@ptd. net, or registration forms may be found at govwolf. org.

On Sunday, March 27, Zackary Naradko and George Pavis celebrated their Eagle Scout Court of Honor at Camp Spirit. George is the son of John and Deborah Pavis of East Allen Township and brother to Eagle Scout Henry Pavis and Eagle Scout Charlie Pavis, all of Troop 352 of Notre Dame of Bethlehem Church. George joined scouting as Tiger Cub with Cub Pack 352. George earned 25 Merit Badges as well and was a gold palm during his tenure with Troop 352. For his Eagle Scout service project, George renovated Bicentennial Park East Pavilion, painting the structure as well as installing a new grill and concrete pad. He also painted permanent four squares for games at East Allen’s summer camp. Camp Director Chuck Frantz helped guide George’s project. George is a sophomore honor student at Bethlehem Catholic High School, where he is a member of the golf and state champion wrestling team. Kutztown University Awarded $50,000 from T-Mobile Hometown Grants for Keith Haring Fitness Park submitted by Bryan Salvadore
Kutztown University received $50,000 from the T-Mobile's Hometown Grant Initiative to support the Keith Haring Fitness Park. This world-class, one-of-a-kind park is the result of a partnership with the university and Kutztown Community Partnership. Representatives from T-Mobile visited KU's campus for a check presentation Thursday, May 5, spending time with members of the KU community to celebrate this collaboration. T-Mobile's Hometown Grants program is a $25 million, five-year initiative to support the people and organizations who help small towns across 34
America thrive and grow by providing funding to kickstart important new community development projects. Hometown Grants are given every quarter to up to 25 small towns. "T-Mobile loves to invest in small and rural towns across the country and we continually strive to support what local communities care about," said Joe Giannone, Senior Manager, SMRA Sales. "Here at Kutztown University, T-Mobile is grateful for the opportunity to present a $50,000 Hometown Grant, which will be used in support of the new Keith Haring Fitness Court. This is extremely fitting as Keith was an internationally recognized Kutztown local. This space will be open to the community and offer a great homage to the local culture of the area with fitness in mind." Located on KU's campus, at the corner of Baldy Street and Normal Avenue, the Keith Haring Fitness Collection is a limited edition, outdoor, public art collaboration with the Keith Haring Foundation in New York and Outdoor Fitness Court and the National Fitness Campaign (NFC). The fitness court will feature a 32'x35' outdoor bodyweight circuit training system with 30 pieces of body-weight fitness elements, including seven full-body circuit training stations and a bodyweight training wall. The park will be located on KU's campus, at the corner of Blady Street and Normal Avenie, and is set to be ready in the fall of 2022. Haring's art will be incorporated into every element. "I want to thank T-Mobile for their generous donation to help bring this park to Kutztown University, ensuring Haring's legacy is a prominent part of our campus community," said Kayla Sherry '23, student body president. Haring was a legendary activist and artist who revolutionized pop art through his graffiti-like pieces full of abstract lines and colorful flairs. His 1980s illustrations grew out of the New York street culture and has become a widely recognized visual language to many.

Fun Activities for a Summer Day SOURCE: parade.com (edited)
The weather is heating up and it will soon be summer. That often means spending the day outdoors with family and friends either in the back yard or the local park enjoying fun activities. From picnics to hiking, biking and silly games, it is the season to be outdoors. Activities for Adults The next time you’re working the grill, experiment with grilling corn. Corn is delicious any time of year of course, but it is really a summertime food. This year, get a little creative with your corn toppings and seasonings. Play with pesto butter, crumbled bacon, grated cheese or buffalo sauce. Along the way, you just might discover your next barbecue hit! Something that might make you think of the kids first is looking for faces in the clouds. The reality is, if you haven’t identified a bunny or dinosaur in the sky lately, or ever, you’re missing out. Allow yourself to feel like a kid again and use your imagination for something other than figuring out how to stretch your budget. Run or walk a 5K for a good cause. It’s a great way to take advantage of the summer weather and know you’re making a difference. Whether it’s for diabetes, autism, cancer, or another cause close to your heart, look for 5k runs in your area and start training. Getting together with friends is a natural summertime activity. Host a potluck picnic. It will make for a memorable day and everyone gets to shine with their favorite dish or other edible contribution – not to mention it divides the prep work. Someone has to take the initiative, so put out invites and gather a group of friends or family in your backyard or a local park for a potluck meal. For the Kids Of course, if your summer activities include entertaining kids… 40
Teach them to fly a kite! When the winds pick up, take the kids outside and teach them the secret to flying a piece of fabric in the air for hours at a time. If the day gets really hot, turn on some sprinklers and watch the kids jump for joy running through the spraying water. Of course the question here is, does it have to be just the kids that are having all the fun? Maybe not! If you can't make it to the beach this year, bring the beach to your own backyard and let the kids make cute mini-aquariums. All they need are some mason jars and fun aquarium accessories. Set them up with small pebbles for the bottom of the jars and then add water (plus blue food coloring), Continued on page 42

Popular country band Steel Creek will kick off the inaugural Victory Park Summer Concert Series Friday from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the new Angelo Scarselletti Amphitheater in Victory Park, Slatington. This concert is being held in memory of longtime NLRA Board member Paul Gass. Food trucks Greek Street and the So Cool Bus will be there, and adult beverages will be available from Cave Brewing and Wine & More in 1st. Steel Creek is a popular local country band located in the Lehigh Valley. The band’s name honors the former workers and the legacy of Bethlehem Steel and the Monocacy Creek, whose waters flows into the Lehigh River along which Bethlehem Steel was built. Steel Creek plays a mix of modern country covers with some classics and rock n roll mixed in. Country line dancers and non-line dancers will find themselves all enjoying a Steel Creek show together. Cave Brewing is a nano brewery cultivating artisan ales and lagers on a unique five-barrel system. In 2015, co-owners Jeff and Alison Bonner found the brewery around the concept of “Evolving Beer.” Wine and More on 1st carries locally popular wine from Stone Mountain Wine Cellars. Stone Mountain’s wines feature Norton grapes, a unique American blue/black grape, which can be finished dry somewhat resembling Cabernet, and it can be used extensively for blending with other varieties. Stone Mountain also ferments and blends some of the old standard American varieties like Concord and Niagara. Additional varietals are also offered such as Jalapeno-Apple, Blackberry, Pear and many more. Greek Street Food Truck offers its customers
National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27: 3 Safety Changes You Need To Know
46
National Safe Boating Week arrives May 21–27 with an annual reminder for boaters to champion recreational boating safety all summer long. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water suggests that boat owners need to know about three recent U.S. Coast Guard regulations that have changed, what’s needed to be carried aboard, and how a vessel is to be operated at higher speeds. 1. Fire extinguishers: As of April 20, the USCG enacted a regulation allowing them enforce fire extinguishers having a 12-year expiration date from the date of manufacture. Additionally, while the new regulation does not change the type, quantity, or requirement for Coast Guard-approved fire extinguishers aboard, it does specify the minimum Underwriter Laboratory (UL) classification of extinguishers to be carried aboard certain vessels — depending on the boat’s model year. Vessels on the water today that are less than 26 feet and model year 2017 or older may continue to carry older, dated or undated “B-I” or “B-II” disposable extinguishers. However, when they are no longer serviceable or have reached 12 years of age since manufacture, they must be replaced with newer class “5-B” or greater extinguishers. Boats less than 26 feet and 2018 model year or newer must carry unexpired “5-B,” “10-B” or “20Continued on page 51 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || MAY 19, 2022

fishing or docking do not require use of an ECOS. The vessel operator is also exempt if the boat’s motor produces less than 115 lbs. of static thrust – or about the size of a 2-hp engine. 3. Electronic visual distress signals (eVDSD): Solving the disposal problem of expired pyrotechnic flares, newer electronic visual distress signal devices (eVDSD) use either a white or combination of orange-red/cyan LED lights with infrared (for rescuers with night vision) and are now U.S. Coast Guard-approved. However, for daytime distress situations you’ll still need to carry aboard an orange distress flag to avoid carrying pyrotechnic devices. eVDSD prices start at about $100 for the white light version. Also keep in mind every visual distress signal requires regular inspection and maintenance. Batteries are an eVDSD’s potential Achilles heel, so replace them every season. Old eVDSD batteries can be cycled into a flashlight at home – where your life potentially is not at stake.

B” fire extinguishers. Having older “B-I” and “BII” types do not meet the new carriage requirements. 2. Engine cutoff switch: As of April 1 last year, boat operators have been required to use either a helm or outboard lanyard or wireless engine cutoff switch (ECOS) on certain vessels less than 26 feet when traveling on plane or above displacement speed. These vessels include (1) boats that have a functioning engine cutoff device installed at the helm or on an outboard engine or have wireless ECOS, or (2) boats manufactured beginning January 2020. Exceptions to the ECOS requirement include if the main helm of the vessel is in an enclosed cabin or the vessel is not operating on plane or at displacement speed.
