Getting Ready for Winter
By John Hall for Blue Mountain Town & Country Gazette
Winter is not that far off, so in this issue we are going to look at some of the things we can all do to get our lives ready for winter. On the home front, that includes prepping the house for winter both inside and out. On the family activity front, it includes coming up with activities that can keep the kids engaged and entertained through the coldest days and nights ahead. In this particular
Myster Tree and Shrub Service
moment we also celebrate Veterans Day, coming up on November 11. More on that a little bit later.
This may seem unrelated, but do you love summer grilling? As the temperatures dip heading into and through winter, outdoor grilling remains a great option for cooking a meal. So we wanted to catch you before you put your grills away to show you how to make winter grilling work for you. Be sure and read “6 Tips for Winter Grilling” for all the details. You just might decide to keep that grill out and use it all winter long.
Brides-to-be: What about getting ready for a winter wedding? Have you ever thought about that? If you’re a bride-to-be, a winter wedding has

some significant benefits not only for you, but also for your guests. Sure, there can be some weather concerns, but they can be outweighed by the fun opportunities a winter wedding can provide. So whether you already have your winter wedding planned for some time in the next few months, or you’re looking a year out, see our article titled “Attention Brides: The Winter Wedding” to see what some of those benefits could be.
As mentioned, one of the “getting ready for winter” activities we all have to give some attention to is getting the place we live ready for winter. Whether it’s adding some insulation around the windows or doors, or just getting the heavier blankets out of the closets and onto the bed, there are a lot of things we can do to get things cozy before winter really comes in hard. In “Crucial Cold Weather Prep for Your Home” we’re focusing a little more on the outside-of-the-house things that should be on your literal “check” list.
Now if you’re a parent looking to those colder days ahead, you might already be thinking about what you’re going to do to get the kids off their electronics while keeping them engaged and entertained. It’s a challenge many parents are facing, but we have you covered. Read “Inexpensive
or Free Winter Activities to do with Kids” for some really good, cheap activities that will help you achieve that goal.
But up first, we want to share information with all veterans and active military reading this issue. On Veterans Day this year, many restaurant chains in our area – as a very small “thank you” for your service – will be offering free meals to veterans and active military. Please read “Free Veterans Day Meals – 2022” for information and details on these offers in our area.
Until next time when we focus on Thanksgiving – yes, it’s getting to be that time of year – stay safe, healthy and bundled up.

6 Tips for Winter Grilling
weber.com (edited)
If you love grilling your food, don’t be afraid to grill outdoors in the winter because grilling is something you can do all year round. Here are six tips to help you get the most enjoyment out of winter grilling.
1. Gear up for winter conditions. If you are uncomfortable or unprepared for the conditions

outdoors, the experience is definitely not going to be pleasant. Be sure you are wearing enough clothing to stand outside with your grill as it cooks. Running in and out to stay warm doesn’t work that well because among other things, you could track at lot of snow into the house. Wear a winter coat, gloves, a thick hat and if snow conditions require, winter boots and wool socks.
2. Use new charcoal. Try to keep your charcoal baskets empty and then only heat up enough coals to cook what is being grilled that night. You can use briquettes due to their low cost and long burn time or you can use lump charcoal instead. Lump

much hotter and faster so
to make your fire hotter at a faster rate. That can be particularly helpful when the weather is especially “frightful” and you want to grill as quickly as possible.
also consider
3. Prepare your grill. A shovel and a car brush can be your most important winter grilling tools. The shovel lets you clear the path to your grill and a car brush works great for clearing the snow off your grill dome and flat surfaces.
4. Have an indoor staging place. This is a place you can set warm plates and also stage food coming in or going out to the grill. If you can have your staging place just inside the door you won’t track snow all over the house. That placement also helps keep the food and plates at room temperature and easily accessible, rather than frozen and stuck in ice if taken outside. You really do not want to place a “hot off the grill” steak on an ice-cold plate.
5. Keep the grill lid closed as much as possible. This is critical in the winter because to maintain the heat in your grill you do not want to lift the lid any more than required. If you do lift the lid for a peek or a quick flip try to open and close the lid quickly so that when you do close it up again a somewhat smaller temperature climb
is needed to get the heat back up to where you need it.
6. Have some patience and allow a little more time. It takes a little more time to gear up in your winter clothing to cook outdoors in the winter. But while you are outside, enjoy the moment and take in the crisp, fresh air and the beauty that a peaceful winter day or night can offer.
Grilling food outside can be great, even in the winter. So gear up in winter clothes and give it a shot! While you’re at it, add some veggies to the grill and make the whole meal outside.

Crucial Cold Weather Prep for Your Home
We are coming to the time of year where we have to start prepping the home for winter. Inside, maybe you just want to get out the heavier blankets and get those flannel sheets ready to go. But outside, where the house is right up against the winter elements, more serious things need to be checked.
Insulate Windows
We all know windows can be drafty. Not only does it make your place less cozy, it can drive up your energy bill as much as 20% per year. Here are simple solutions (all under $10) that will allow you to insulate your windows quickly:
1. V-seal weather stripping. Add this plastic weather stripping along the sides of the sashes. Windows can open and shut evenly with the V-seal in place.
2. Rope caulk. This soft, sticky stuff can be molded to fill the gap – and the caulk removes easily at the end of the cold season.
3. Shrink film. Applied with double-sided tape, this clear plastic sheeting shrinks drum-tight when heated with a hair dryer, sealing off drafts and capturing an insulating air buffer.
4. Nail polish. If carefully applied, clear polish fills any crack in window glass almost invisibly. Once hardened, it will stabilize the glass until you can replace it.
Trim Tree Branches
You want to be sure any overhanging tree limbs by your home are at least 3 feet away from the
house. The last thing you want is to have mighty tree limbs coming down on your home during a winter storm.
Inspect Your Fireplace
You should always be certain your wood-burning fireplace is in good shape (read: safe) for the burning season. above where it exits the roof. To avoid leaks at the chimney base, be sure the roof flashing is tight against the chimney.
On the inside, confirm that the flue damper opens, closes, and seals properly. Be certain there are no combustible materials inside the flue, and the fireplace surround, hearth and firebox have no cracked or missing mortar. If you spot any damage, order a professional fireplace and chimney inspection.
Check the Roof
You certainly don’t want to find out you have a leaky roof after the first snow hits. A roof inspection can help you spot any potential issues. You can do a thorough inspection yourself using a pair of binoculars from the ground.
Look for shingles that are broken, missing or showing other defects. Check the flashing for rust or gaps, as well as the rubber boots around vent pipes to make sure they are not showing wear or cracks. For repair, if you’re not comfortable working on a roof, consult a specialized roof contractor.
Clear Out Gutters and Downspouts
Clogged rain gutters or downspouts can damage your home’s foundation or cause ice dams, which can lead to expensive repairs. After the leaves fall, clean your gutters to remove leaves, twigs, and gunk. Make sure the gutters aren’t sagging and trapping water. Also, tighten gutter hangers and downspout brackets, and replace any worn or damaged materials.

Attention Brides: The Winter Wedding
SOURCE: herecomestheguide.com (edited)
According to herecomestheguide.com, winter is probably the most underrated wedding season. It has obvious weather-related risks, but also some great benefits that can take care of any weather concerns. Here are nine reasons to consider having a winter wedding.
TWO WHEELZ
MENS PEDICURE

103 Main Street, Walnutport, PA 18088
Hours: M-F 6pm-8pm, Sat and Sun 10am-8pm
Where the uncomfortable go to get comfortable
1: Winter is considered "off season" for weddings; the benefits are major.
Off-season weddings are typically less expensive.You will get your greatest “bang for your buck” if you marry between December and February – maybe even early March.
You'll have a wider selection of available dates.] That means you'll have a better chance of securing the date of your dreams at your favorite venue.
Your guests won't be slammed with wedding invites or travel plans.More of your target guests will be able to attend. Just be aware that winter has a lot of holidays, so plan your date accordingly.
The bottom line:Your budget will stretch further, your venue and vendors will be more available and your guests won’t be suffering from wedding burnout.
2. You can really accessorize.
Winter weddings let you (and your guests) layer up in style, without the risk of overheating. So say yes to that gorgeous long-sleeved gown and don't forget button-down flannel shirts for getting ready with your bridesmaids. It's the cold-weather spin on the bridesmaid robe.
3. The sun won't be in everyone's eyes.
Hosting an indoor winter wedding ensures

everyone will be comfortable with no concerns about the weather. Plus your hair and makeup will remain flawless. If you do plan an outdoor ceremony have a solid “plan B” in case of bad weather.
4. The sun won't be in *your* eyes.
Winter wedding photos are the dreamiest –powdery white snow on the ground and glittering snowflakes in the trees. Even without snow you'll still get that soft overcast lighting that's pretty much Mother Nature's filter. So you won't be
squinting in your photos.
5. Your guests can score better travel deals. Travel has a peak season and beyond the timeframe around major holidays like Christmas, it ain't winter! Many hotels have vacancies during the coldest months, so room rates are lower. The same applies to flights in the chilly post-holiday season. You do need to remember that winter travel can have flight delays and other hazards, so keep that in mind if inviting a lot of out-of-town guests.

The Winter Wedding
Continued from page 19
6. You can do all kinds of cute winter wedding things.
Get creative with a hot drink station like a hot chocolate bar, or sip on cozy signature cocktails like spiked cider and hot toddies! Offer tomato soup shooters with grilled cheese croutons. Be creative. If your venue has a fireplace or fire pit, be sure there’s a good fire going.
7. No one's worried about their summer bodies. That means you can have comfort food galore! It really is the best way to keep your guests warm and cozy. Hearty, healthy fare like roasted root vegetables, steaming bowls of soup and mashed potatoes will make everyone happy. Or maybe create a “cozy food” station with different pastas and sauces, or a full setup for make-your-own s'mores. A winter wedding lets you have all kinds of food options.
8. Venue holiday décor can do double duty. You can potentially save money on décor if your venue is already decorated for the holidays. Ask your venue what their holiday décor plan is for the event space. Then you can build out your
personal décor from there.
9. The best part?
When the wedding is over you can honeymoon somewhere warm and make all your friends jealous: #paradise. Winter weddings for the win!

Inexpensive or Free Winter Activities to Do with Kids
SOURCE: parents.com (edited)
During winter and pre-winter cold weather, finding budget-friendly ways to keep the kids engaged and entertained – both indoors and outside – is a common challenge. Here are some inexpensive (or free) activities you can do with your kids that we found at parents.com.
Paper Crafts
Simple paper arts and crafts are always a great option when it comes to entertaining kids and keeping them engaged. This type of activity can be even more appealing (and less expensive) when you use things found around the home. Any age group can participate – from toddler to teen. With paper craft projects your kids can be creative and your toddlers can start to build fine motor skills.
Game Night
Another cold-weather indoor option, also appropriate for any age group, is game night. There are a lot of fun and educational choices to lure the kids away from their electronics. Puzzles are a great choice for every age group and are very inexpensive to buy. Get everyone assembling them on baking sheets while drinking some hot chocolate for a fun family night.
Sledding
If your family enjoys making the most of the chillier weather, when we start getting that snow there are few more budget-friendly pastimes then sledding. Sledding is something you can do on local hills for free or even in your own backyard.
Building Snow Forts
Another free and popular winter activity is building snow forts. Fill a small plastic storage bin
with snow and pat it down. Then flip the bin over to release your brick. Complete a row of bricks on the bottom and then add another and another until you reach your desired height. Then let your kids decorate their fort using squirt bottles filled with food coloring and water.
Cooking Together
When it's too cold to play outside, try getting your little ones involved in the kitchen. Around the holidays this can be especially fun when making festive cookies, a gingerbread house, or other holiday treats. Or have your kids help do things like wash vegetables or peel carrots. If you’re baking, get them involved in kneading or rolling the dough.
Local Festivals and Events
During the winter, always keep an eye out for local festivals and events that are free or inexpensive. Christmas festivals and other holiday-

themed events often provide a variety of familyfriendly
Hiking in Snowshoes
Snowshoeing allows kids of nearly all ages to explore your favorite hiking spots in a completely new way. You can pick up snow shoes fairly inexpensively at secondhand sports stores. Make this activity even more fun by challenging your kids to find as many different kinds of animal tracks as they can.
Building Creative Snowmen
Think beyond your traditional snowman and create a fairytale version, such as a snow princess or snow warrior using dress-up items your kids already have at home. As long as you have some snow on the ground, this is a fun and free activity kids will enjoy.
Looking at Holiday Lights
There's likely a neighborhood in town that's known for amazing light displays, so find out where it is and take a family walk or drive. Or just drive around your own neighborhood to check out your neighbor’s holiday lights and decorations while playing holiday tunes. Then have the kids vote on which display they liked the best back at home with hot chocolate in hand.

Remember
Mauser Mill Co, located along the Lehigh River in Treichlers, PA, drew water from the Lehigh Canal to power the five-story roller mill. The most famous owners of the mill were Jacob Mauser and his family. They operated the mill from approx. 1885 to 1967. The mill was last owned by Con Arga: closing in 2014. Approx 1968, the Treichlers mill was the last active flour mill in the Lehigh Valley, which once had over twenty, to manufacture flour, prepared foods, corn products, meal, and feed.
Pictured here is an advertisement card showing all the different flours made at the Mauser Mill. The advertisement card was handed out to their customers, according to Donald Kuntz, who started working full-time soon after serving in the U.S. Navy. Donald worked there from the early 1960s until 1991. He remembers carrying 100 lb sacks of flour when working there part-time while in high school. Thank you, Donald Kuntz for sharing the Mauser Mill advertisement card with us.

’S Lattwarrick-koche fer alders
Sie heesse sell en gudi Farb un schaffe wie sie kenne;
'S Feier watt als oft gemacht – sell dutt ihn gschwind eikoche;
Datt "Pussy wants the corner" duhne Yunge eifrich schpiele,

Mer kann's als heere gnalle, wann sie als der Buckel globbe;

Cooking Apple Butter Years Ago
[This is the last part of Thomas J. Rhoads’ poem. If you want to read Part 1, look in the last issue of “Town and Country”.]
They [Farm girls] don’t shy away from the sun, and when they darken their skin,
They call that a good color and they work as they are able;
They rake and tie up the grain sheaves just as well as any man
And when the need requires, they can drive a four-horse team.
They can wash, cook, bake, yes, all kinds of
cakes,
That is the [important] stuff for boys, when they are looking for a partner.
The tub is filled with sliced apples, the cider is cooking,
The fire will be made often – that makes the cider cook down quickly;
Mom often scoops the foam off and tends to the fire,
And brings the good cakes by , here one does not have to spend anything.
The apple slices, which Mom puts in, a few at a time, they are stirred,
Until they’re falling apart, good and fine, else one cannot ‘smear’ them.
What are the young people doing to bring on the night?
Just go out with me in yard, there one sees different things.
There young people are enthusiastically playing “Pussy wants the corner,”
Or a knotted handkerchief game played on a long bench – one can often feel it,
One can always hear it crack, when it always hits someone’s back;
One always like to catch him [who has the handkerchief] but one cannot often stop him.
Then Jerry Boyer sits on the stool and is playing the fiddle,
And when one interferes, then he often gets his ear boxed; [Don’t we remember that?]
They dance that it rattles in mom’s room, They’re happy and lived it up and always well pleased,
The carpet (made from rags) on the floor, they carried out,

And afterwards laid it back in, there was nothing to complain about then.
The cider is all cooked down, the apple slices are all broken down (gone),
Then mom puts the spices in and then freshly begins
To stir with a mixing ladle and mixing well all that stuff;
The fire is banked and the pots are made ready
The apple budder is scooped into the pots, then it’s time to ‘lick’ the kettle.
In the yard, old and young come here from every place, far and wide.
The fun is now over – see, the day is certainly fading;
They hasten to get home – no one wants to lose any more sleep.
Then when evening comes again, then they go to another farmer, Who is cooking apple budder- in this one does not need to pity them.
That is just fun, they gladly loose a little sleep over it
And often on the sly a little courting.
[Pussy wants the corner (or Puss in the corner): A yard or other square area with four corners, posts, or trees equidistant from one another is chosen as the playing arena. One player is nominated "Puss" and takes their place in the center of the arena. Each of the other four players selects one of the corners and takes their place there. Play begins with the four corner players attempting to exchange places with each other in any direction. "Puss" attempts to gain a corner during the exchange. Should they succeed, the player left without a corner becomes "Puss" and takes the place in the center of the arena. Play resumes in a similar manner.]
[Knotted handkerchief (or towel) game: Players sat in a row on long bench. One player was “It” and had to guess who had the knotted handkerchief or towel. If they were wrong, they got swatted across the back or backside with it. Eventually each player would take a turn at being “it” and guess who had handkerchief and receive the consequences if wrong. The details reported were sparse and varied from one source to another. (I can see where this game could get out of hand if some player had a sadistic side to him/her.)]

Veterans Notes
submitted by Cory Watkins
Veterans Day, November 11th, is an important day for every American and is intended to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love for their country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. This day of remembrance celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. Communities across the country plan events to honor those who have served and are currently serving. As we celebrate and recognize these brave men and women, we should also consider the struggles that they go through with mental illness.

Suicide is a national problem in the U.S. and a major concern for active-duty service members and military veterans. Members of the military may experience a variety of difficult and traumatic events including combat, natural disasters, and physical assault. According to the 2022 National Veteran Suicide Prevention Annual Report, there were 6,146 Veteran suicide deaths in 2020. That is 31.7 deaths per 100,000. During that year, suicide was the second leading cause of death among Veterans under age 45. The suicide rate for Veterans was 57.3% greater than for non-Veteran U.S. adults.
Veterans can come home from service carrying a weight they did not go in with. Without the right help, that weight can seem like too much, leading some Veterans to consider, or carry out, suicide. Some of the warning signs that Veterans exhibit include feelings of hopelessness, acting agitated, struggling with anxiety, insomnia, outburst of anger or rage, an increase in substance use or abuse, and isolating themselves from the people close to them. Other factors related to the higher risk of suicide among Veterans are related to undiagnosed or untreated conditions, such as PTSD or mood disorders, which can increase a person’s overall risk of suicide.

The Jason Foundation is another valuable resource for those struggling with suicidal ideation. Many times, a Veteran will exhibit clear warning signs prior to an attempt. By knowing the warning signs, and knowing how to help, you could save a life. Visit The Jason Foundation’s website to learn more about suicide, the warning signs, and how you can help make a difference. You can find the website at

November 3, 2022 || townandcountrygazette.com 47
During the past year, we have had the privilege of serving the families of Veterans. We are honored to be of service to them in their time of need, just as their loved one was there in our time of need. On Veteran’s Day, we pay tribute to those who served our country in the name of Freedom, the same Freedom that allows us to serve them. Our prayers are with all the Veterans, their families, and with the brave men and women serving our country today. We also wish to thank those from our area’s veteran service groups who volunteer their time in honor guards and firing squads bestowing the greatest honor for their deceased comrades. Thomas E. observe and appreciate the colors around
But today, area children took the colorful holiday
level and celebrated by adding even more color to the world while visiting Crayola Experience in downtown Easton. The family destination that brings color and creativity to life encouraged kids to use their imagination to create new colors during a National Color Day public event in The Crayola Store this morning. The event included book readings of the newly released children’s picture book Crayola: Ellie’s Crayon Adventure with author Sarah Glenn Marsh. Inspired by the book, kids imagined and created their own new color and built a communal art project—with a little the help from the magical Color Catcher character in Ellie’s adventure. They also participate in a Color Scavenger Hunt through the 4,000 sq. ft. Crayola Store, complete with clues, puzzle solving, and prizes. The Color Catcher art project featuring the new colors the kids dreamed up will be on exhibit at the Easton Area Public Library for Children’s Book Week, Nov. 7-13. In addition, Crayola and publishing house Running Press Kids is donating copies of Crayola: Ellie’s Crayon Adventure and Crayola: Follow That Line! children’s books to each of the public libraries in Northampton and Monroe counties for their book collections.
