I don’t personally use that level of smart tech to control my home heating, but my understanding is that it can do that kind of exceptional thing. Obviously, that’s not where home heating began. But we know where it did and we will share that with you, and also, how heating evolved to what we have today. Be sure and read “The History of Home Heating” to learn more.

One last thing, we have decided to postpone our St. Paul’s Schoolhouse opening for this year partly due to the continuing pandemic but also due to the lack of planning time. We are hoping that in 2022 we can put together a really good program to offer our community supporters, so stay tuned next year. When our fundraisers are behind us, we will be diving into work at the Historical Centre Museum that has been accumulating since last year. Heading into fall, if you are free on Tuesday mornings and would like to volunteer at the museum, please give us a call. We will let you know when our work sessions will resume. We need helpers to organize displays, file paperwork and documents, enter information into our computers and clean areas in the museum. We hope to see you soon!

RESCHEDULED due to rain: Midnight Special Band at Victory Park with MR Doggy Style and Hijinx Brewing Company

Join us September 24 6-8 p.m. at Victory Park with MR Doggy Style and Hijinx Brewing Company to enjoy live music from Midnight Special Band! Sponsored by MINT Home Improvements and Tree of Life Tree Management Services and brought to you by the Angelo Scarselletti Amphitheater. The event is free, however donations are always welcome! Midnight Special Band was formed back in 1988. It was founded by brothers Dennis and Dean Rehrig. Their love of country music and entertaining folks from all over was the cornerstone of Midnight Special Band. The gift of music was given to them from their daddy, Frank "Pop" Rehrig. Frank was a fiddle player and also squeezed the accordion.

Dennis and Dean, along with their father, were original members of the Rehrig Family Band along with Dennis's twin brother David. In 1979, Dennis, Dean and David decided to change the name of the band to Twitty Fever. David was the lead singer who had great passion for the music of Conway Twitty. Twitty Fever was a four-piece band rounded out with Jim Baldwin on bass guitar and harmony vocals. In 1988, Dennis and Dean decided to leave Twitty Fever and begin Midnight Special Band. Since 1988, Midnight Special Band has gone through many changes. But, one thing has remained the same: love of music. The love of country music by the Rehrig Family continues to be the foundation of Midnight Special Band. HiJinx Brewing Company was born out of a fierce passion for great beer. The HiJinx crew’s dedication to quality and their willingness to experiment make for some tasty and unique beers. From the traditional to the exotic, their passion for beer knows no limits. The concept for HiJinx began in 2007 when the founder, Curt Keck, was brewing up a batch of homebrew and imbibing in his garage with some friends. One of the group suggested that he open up a brewery to share the product of his passion with the masses. After some coaxing and a few more pints Curt agreed and said that the brewery needed a name. He insisted that the brewery have a name that spoke to the HiJinx that took place in his garage. There was a simultaneous eureka expression on the faces of everyone present… and HiJinx was born.

Don’t Let the Cold Burst Your Pipes SOURCE: VARIOUS

If this winter is as cold as the summer was hot, be prepared – and the time to get prepared is now – and don’t let the cold burst your pipes. Winterizing your plumbing is one of the best ways to prepare your home for freezing temperatures and avoid pipe damage or malfunction. That can save you a huge hassle and lots of cash by avoiding pipe repairs or replacement. Here are the tips: Know Your Plumbing System / Be prepared for a potential catastrophe by first identifying where your plumbing pipes run and locating water shutoff valves. Always make sure you have easy access to the main water shut-off in case of emergency. Water can do extensive damage. Check furnace or HVAC unit / If your HVAC unit or furnace goes out during the dead of winter, your pipes will suffer in the freezing temperatures until a repair can be made. Ensure your heating system is working properly before winter arrives. Run water / Allow a trickle of water to run through the faucet to avoid freezing pipes. The pipes and cover with pipe insulation. The insulation by itself isn’t designed to withstand long-term cold temperatures and can actually prevent warm air from reaching the pipes when not partnered with the heat cable. Shut off outdoor faucets / Open your outdoor faucets to allow excess water to run out. Then turn off the faucet at the shutoff valve. If you don’t first allow the bleeder cap to drain, the pipe can still freeze and crack. Also, drain outside water lines to sprinklers and swimming pools until there is no moisture left to freeze in the pipes. pressure relief from a slow drip can prevent frozen pipes from cracking. While you may see a minor bump in your water bill, it’s much better than footing the cost for pipe replacement. Inspect the exterior / Do a walk-around of your home looking for visible cracks that need to be sealed. Cold air will seep through the cracks, causing your pipes to freeze. Use spray foam or caulking to fill the gaps and cut off the draft. You might also consider a freeze alarm. Freeze alarms cost less than $100 and they will alert you on your phone – if you set it up that way – when your indoor temperature falls below 45 degrees. That will give you enough time to get some warmer air into the areas where you have vulnerable pipes. Protecting your pipes from winter’s harsh temperatures doesn’t require a lot of time or strenuous work. Follow these basic steps to keep your water flowing and pipes intact through the coldest months of the year.

Handy DIY Plumbing Tips SOURCE: familyhandyman.com (excerpt)

To save you time, money and headaches down the road, we found a great selection of tips for solving common household plumbing problems. It was put together by the DIY experts atThe Family Handyman Magazine. If you’re not a professional plumber, these tips will probably be very helpful to you. One or more may even save you an expensive service call. Here are just a few of the ones we found. Tip #1: Use a shop vacuum to remove hard objects from drains When a hard object like a toothbrush, comb or toy plugs a toilet or drain, a plunger may not be the solution – it might only push the obstruction in deeper. Instead, suck out the water and the obstruction with a wet/dry shop vacuum. Tip #2: Stop sink-sprayer hang-ups using pipe insulation If you have to jiggle the hose as you pull out your kitchen sink sprayer, chances are the hose is

expand and grind against pipe hangers and joists in your basement. Pick up some adhesive-backed felt at the hardware store and cut it into strips. Then remove each hanger, wrap the felt around the pipe, and then refasten the hanger. Tip #5: Quiet loud sinks with expanding foam Fill the space between two stainless steel sink

catching on the shut-off valves below. For smooth operation, slip 1/2" foam pipe insulation over the pipes and shut-off handles. Tape it if it won't stay put. You can get the insulation at home centers for about $3. Tip #3: Use a bucket of water to flush the toilet You don't have to run to the neighbor's bathroom during a plumbing project. Before you turn off your water supply, fill 2-gallon buckets with water. You can then flush the toilet by dumping the water in the bowl. You will get one flush per bucket. This works just as well as the regular method of flushing, although it won't refill the bowl. Tip #4: Silence creaking pipes by wrapping them in adhesive-backed felt Running hot water can cause copper pipes to

basins with expanding foam. The foam deadens vibrations and lessens the “gong effect” when Continued on page 10

things are dropped into the sink. It's possible to do this with the sink in place, but it’s much neater and easier if done before installation. Either way, let the foam harden and then trim away the excess with a knife. Tip #6: Take a picture before closing up walls Your walls may not have much inner beauty, but it's a good idea to take pictures of what's inside during remodeling. The same goes for floors and ceilings. Then when your next remodeling or repair

project rolls around, you'll already know where to find the plumbing lines, as well as the electrical wires and framing. Tip #7: Plunge water before removing the trap When your sink trap gets clogged and you have to remove it, give the drain a few plunges with a toilet plunger before doing so. This will push most of the water out of the trap, lessening the mess

when you remove it. If you have a double sink, be sure to plug the other drain to contain the air pressure. If your strainer isn't a screw-down style, you'll have to hold it down while you use the plunger.

Fall Furnace Maintenance for Winter Warmth SOURCE: Various

If you are a homeowner, fall furnace maintenance should be a priority on your seasonal to-do list so you don’t get caught in the cold this coming winter. This essential service will provide your furnace or heat pump what it needs to give you its best performance in the cold of winter. It will also extend the life of your heating system and help to keep your utility bill in check. When and Why to Schedule A home’s heating system needs a professional tune up once per year to maintain its performance and condition. The ideal time to plan the service is early fall before temperatures start to drop. This timing ensures your heating system will be ready to perform in tip-top condition as soon as it’s needed. Even if your furnace system performed well during the last cycle of cold months, a tune up

always benefits the system. It benefits you as well with peace of mind. Here’s why you don’t want to skip it: • The truth is your furnace experiences wear and tear over the course of a heating season even if it is running well. Just operating the system puts stress on its components and eventually, if not serviced, does reduce the system’s performance. Year-to-year this decreases reliability and efficiency. • An unmaintained furnace will typically experience more repair needs and most likely will not last as long as a furnace that gets an annual

checkup. An unmaintained furnace will also have lower efficiency over time that will impact your comfort and it will also generally lead to higher energy bills. • If you are starting with a brand new furnace, the manufacturer will very likely require regular maintenance by a qualified HVAC technician as a condition of the warranty. You don’t want to lose warranty coverage due to equipment neglect. Things You Can Do There are several things that you can and should do to keep your furnace or heat pump well cared

for throughout the cold season. Maintenance Plan / The first thing to do is to invest in an annual maintenance plan to keep your furnace or heat pump on schedule for regular service. For all the reasons mentioned in this article for keeping a maintained heating system, a maintenance plan is a very good investment. Even if there is not a part repair needed this time around, the thorough cleaning of the system is worth the time and expense. Continued on page 14

Check & Replace Filters / When we are in the colder months in our region and the furnace is running all the time, it is important to check your air filter monthly and change it when needed. For most households, a new filter may not be needed except every two months. Exceptions include homes with smokers, pets and members sensitive to pollen and other allergens. Those households benefit from more frequent filter changes, often monthly. Keep Good Airflow / Keep good airflow around any outdoor components of your heating / HVAC system. If vegetation is overgrown in the area or you have threatening tree branches, trim them away. Try to keep a buffer zone of two to three feet around the outdoor elements and if you see evidence of rodents or insects, call a pest control company before they nest inside your HVAC system or chew wiring.

The History of Home Heating SOURCE: ugihvac.com (edited)

One of the most basic human needs is warmth, and since the beginning of time, people have sought ways to keep themselves warm and safe in harsh weather conditions. Nothing has really changed in that regard, but how we get the job done has changed a lot. In the Earliest Days Archaeologists believe that around 1.9 million years ago people may have started using fire in a controlled fashion, creating central fires in dwellings that had openings in the roof for smoke to escape. Between 7500-5700 BC, Neolithic settlements in Turkey were using open hearths in homes and buildings. The Greeks in ancient Rome developed central heating around 2500 BC using radiant heat. Some buildings, baths, and upper-class homes heated empty spaces under the floors, which became warm with the rising of the heat. In some structures that heat was also connected to pipes in the walls.

After the fall of the Roman Empire around AD 400, heating methods became more primitive again, including the use of very simple fireplaces. In AD 800 the first stoves made of clay were built and in AD 1200 the first chimneys appeared. In the 18th and 19th Centuries In the 18th and 19th centuries there were numerous advances in home heating. In the early 1700s people in England started using combustion air from an outside duct. At about the same time, Russia’s Peter the Great was enjoying the earliest air-heating system using hot water in his Summer Palace. Continued on page 16

Home Heating Continued from page 15

In 1741 Benjamin Franklin invented the Franklin stove. The Franklin stove was recognized as a more efficient stove than the others in that time period. Then in the late 1700s, James Watt from Scotland developed the first working steam-based heating system for his home. It utilized a central boiler and a system of pipes. A few years later in 1805, William Strutt from England invented a warm-air furnace that heated cold air. The heated air traveled through a series of ducts into the rooms of his

home, providing a whole-house heating system. Closer to home, Edwin Drake drilled the first natural gas well near Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859, while Thomas Edison invented the electric heater in 1883. Meanwhile, back in Russia Franz San Galli invented the radiator. The radiator was the first major step forward towards modern, central home heating systems. Both the thermostat and the Bunsen burner were invented in 1885, the latter creating a natural gas flame that could be regulated. These were each significant advances in the evolution of home heating. In the 20th Century and Today Just after the turn of the 20th Century, Albert Marsh discovered Chromel, an alloy 300 times stronger than similar materials of the time. Chromel heralded the coming of electrical heating elements in the market. In 1919, Alice Parker patented the first central heating system, which provided people with an easy means to regulate the temperature throughout their homes. It took until 1935 for scientists to successfully design forced convection wall heaters, which use a coal furnace, electric fan, and ductwork Continued on page 18

in the home. From there it took until the middle of the century for recessed wall heaters to become more common in many households and apartments. Solar air heating was invented in 1990. In the year 2000, with the development of “smart” technologies, homeowners became able to regulate heat in their homes remotely using electronic devices. Today, thanks to forward thinkers throughout history, safe, effective heat is only as far away as the switch, thermostat or smartphone, allowing us to make our homes as warm and cozy as we like.

Which Type of Heating is Best for You? SOURCE: smarterhouse.org (excerpt)

If you’re looking at a new home or a new place to rent, or are planning a heating upgrade, there are several kinds of heating systems you might want to be aware of and understand as you take next steps. Here is brief information on the most common types of heating systems available today. Central Heat Furnaces / The majority of North American households depend on a central furnace to provide heat. A furnace works by blowing heated air through ducts that deliver the warm air to rooms throughout the house via air registers or grills. Boilers / Boilers are special-purpose water heaters. While furnaces carry heat in warm air, boiler systems distribute the heat in hot water, which gives up heat as it passes through radiators or other devices in rooms throughout the house. In steam boilers, which are much less common

in homes today, the water is boiled and steam carries heat through the house, condensing to water in the radiators as it cools. Heat Pumps / Heat pumps are just two-way air conditioners. During the summer, an air conditioner works by moving heat from the relatively cool indoors to the relatively warm outside. In winter, the heat pump reverses this trick, scavenging heat from the cold outdoors with the help of an electrical system, and discharging that heat inside the house. Direct Heat Gas-Fired Space Heaters / Gas-fired direct heating equipment includes wall-mounted, freestanding, and floor furnaces, all characterized by their lack of ductwork and relatively small heat output. Because they lack ducts, they are most useful for warming a single room or even a small cabin. Better models use “sealed combustion air” systems, with pipes installed through the wall to both provide combustion air and carry off the combustion products. Unvented Gas-Fired Heaters: A Bad Idea / Gas or kerosene space heaters that do not have an exhaust vent have been sold for decades. They include wall-mounted and free-standing units, as well as open-flame gas fireplaces with ceramic logs that are not actually connected to a chimney. We strongly discourage their use for health and safety reasons. Electric Space Heaters / Portable (plug-in) electric heaters are inexpensive to buy, but costly to use. They convert electric current from the wall socket directly into heat, like a toaster or clothes iron. Wood-Burning and Pellet Stoves / Wood heating can make a great deal of sense in rural areas. Wood prices are generally lower than gas, oil, or electricity and if you cut your own, the savings can be large. Continued on page 22 News@TownAndCountryGazette.com || SEPTEMBER 16, 2021

Which type of Heating? Continued from page 20

Pellet stoves offer a number of advantages over wood stoves in that they are less polluting and offer users greater convenience, temperature control, and indoor air quality. Fireplaces / Gas (and most wood) fireplaces are basically part of a room’s décor, but typically not an effective heat source. Because they generally pull air from the room for combustion, the fireplace tends to lose more heat than it provides. On the other hand, if the fireplace is provided with a

tight-sealing glass door, a source of outside air, and a good chimney damper, it can provide useful heat. Hopefully this information will help you decide which type of heat is best for you.

Wednesday – Every time I turned around, I found another hole I had to find time to knit mittens and sweaters – To say I lacked work would not be true.

If the weather cooperated, I washed on Monday; If not, I baked bread, which I preferred. It made no difference whether I liked or hated work, I had to do it. A good night’s rest for my work was my only pay. Tuesday I ironed and mended torn holes – In summer I bend down to pick beans. I fetched the ham and sawed through the bone Cooked it with beans and fresh potatoes laid on the top. A pile of stockings to darn awaited me by

Thursday I practically emptied the second floor; I stripped the beds, dusted and swept well. With three meals to cook, the day was soon gone. It seems one just does housework over and over. Friday we baked and cleaned the parlor. Enough for an army - we didn’t' t hesitate – We made every kind of pie there is. This kept us busy from morn till night. On Saturday we cleaned and scrubbed the kitchen floor. We prepared enough for a group of threshers. To crawl on one's knees, also to clean windows to a shine. How I looked forward to the next day off. Continued on page 28

We were happy for Sunday; the day is well provided [for us]; As regular as the sun rises, we went to church. At noon had a big meal, perhaps invited company. Yes, I was in the kitchen again with my dishcloth. Housework is necessary; we can't do without it. For our health we need more than milk from a cow. I learned one thing; one really earns his rest. Perhaps I'd had it better, if I 'd been born a boy! [This poem was published by the Fereinicht Pennsylfawnish Deitsch Fulk, Inc. in its Fall 1997 issue. Neither the writer of the poem or the date it was created are listed there, but the theme of the poem is reflected in that old adage I often heard when I was growing up: A man’s work is from sun to sun; but a woman’s work is never done.]

As this school year starts, we want our children to succeed in this academic year after the ups and downs of the past one. There are things that we can do to help set them up for a great school year in a semi back to normal world. With proper knowledge and routines, not only will this school year be a success, but you’ll help your children gain skills that will help them throughout their lives.

The most important place to start is to: Create a sacred space to work. By have a dedicated space for a space to work in helps your brain to focus on the task. There are less distractions because this is the space for working and your brain can process. Even in small living space, keep a basket with all the tools need for homework in one spot and bring them out when it’s time for homework. The space really should be the same place, like the kitchen table. Life is very busy and it's not always easy to keep open– but YOU must be the one to make sure the table is cleared off and clean. They will not be the ones to do it and it is best to remove the excuse that there is no place for them to work. Once the routine is in place, your child will take over but for now, you have to step up and be the one to make sure this becomes a habit. A very important reminder is that while most kids prefer to work in their room, unless you have a motivated learner, this is the worst place they can be. There are too many distractions waiting for them there in the form of books, art and their phone. try you best to not make it a punishment

to be in the kitchen or another common area of the house, but rather a way to help them get their responsibilities done so they can do the extra things without the looming guilt of not doing what they need to do. **HUGE EASY HINT*** One of the best routines that I have in place for my own work is to look at all the assignments that I have for the week ahead of time. This way I can make sure that I have everything that I need to complete these tasks and to keep me on track for success. No matter what you do, it will help your child keep up their education and keep learning. As we learned last year, this crisis has been a perfect opportunity to learn that learning does not only exist in a classroom but rather is all around us. The first day of fall in 2021 arrives on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at 3:21 p.m. EDT. What Is The Fall Equinox? In mid-September each year, we greet the fall season with the arrival of the fall equinox (otherwise known as the autumnal equinox). This is the moment when the Sun crosses the Equator, and those of us living in the Northern Hemisphere will begin to see more darkness than daylight. Regardless of whether it has been chilly for weeks or there are still balmy summer-like temperatures, this is the start of astronomical fall. This is different from “meteorological fall,” which began on September 1st. At this point, the Earth’s tilt is moving away from its maximum lean toward the Sun; its rays are aiming directly at the equator. The autumnal (fall) equinox marks the turning

What is Pipelining? Submitted by Deluxe Plumbing & Heating

If you need to replace your broken, cracked or offset cast iron, there may be another way. Traditional methods require extensive digging or cutting open walls and floors to remove the old pipes and replace them with PVC or other modern materials. With a pipelining repair, there's normally no digging required or removing of the concrete floor, cabinets and drywall. Choose a cost-effective, fast way to replace your cracked, broken or brittle pipes. What Is Pipelining? After evaluating the pipes in your home or business, our licensed plumbers determine which pipeline repair method would work best for your sewer line or in your home. With trenchless pipelining, we install a cured in place pipe inside your sewer line. This method requires just two access points. First, we pull a pipe liner made of resin through the old pipe. Once we inflate the liner, the resin cures into a new pipe in hours. This process won't interfere with waste removal from your home. This can also be done with any waste line inside your home. Pipelining and Trenchless FAQs • Does Homeowners insurance cover pipelining repairs? If damage comes from a covered event outside your control, your home insurance should cover sewer line repairs. However, if faulty construction or poor upkeep causes damage to your sewer, your home insurance company most likely will not pay for the damage.

• When does the city pay for sewer backups and repairs? Individual municipalities have unique rules when it comes to the responsibility of property owners versus the city. Typically, municipalities take responsibility for sewer lines once they connect to the city sewer. Blockages in the municipal sewer can back up on your property. So, it's important to establish responsibility. Make sure you consult a professional before contacting your insurance company. • Do you have to leave the property during pipelining repair? Not at all. There will be brief periods without water as we work on the project. We stagger work periods to ensure you have water as often as possible until we finish the repairs, which typically take a day. In the event that we know it will take longer than a day, we put our customers in a hotel for the night. • Do you offer a warranty on labor and materials for pipelining? Your plumbing technician can tell you about the warranty on your CIPP or repairs. We stand behind all work we do with a satisfaction guarantee; we give you a lifetime warranty. • Does pipelining work on apartment buildings and condominiums? Pipelining repair provides more cost-effective and time-saving solutions than traditional plumbing methods in most commercial buildings. Contact Deluxe Plumbing and Heating today to schedule your pipelining repair or visitdeluxeplumbing.com/pipelining
