t has been an unprecedented year & fantastic to see the return to amateur & professional golf events across the UK, Europe & Sweden. The magazine has been extremely lucky to have access in these uncertain times to new brands emerging & tour professionals with time to offer great insights into their journeys. We have some fantastic editorial features coming in the Summer & Winter editions including editorial features from Japan, Ireland, Spain, Sweden and the UK. This includes Olympic Special Feature, fantastic news from Los Naranjos GC, home to the Ladies European Grand Final plus new partnerships for the

magazine at future events. It's also a testament to our continual growth & expanding circulation that Sweden will be a major influence in upcoming editorial features & brand exclusives. Probably the most exciting announcement is our my appointment of Sarah as a consultant editor in the next two editions with plans to take the magazine's reach & diversity to a further global audience. Thanks again to our loyal designer Thea for working in these challenging times. We look forward to seeing the magazine supporting many International events over the forthcoming months.

ROSEMARK GRIP REVIEW Alice Davis, PGA Golf Professional INTERVIEW BY DAVID J NICHOLSON

4

LADIESGOLFLifestyle

I

was already aware of the Rosemark brand of putter grips before a package of review grips arrived on my doorstep. What I was less aware of was what makes the brand and the products ‘unique’. This was my opportunity to find out what the ‘buzz’ around this relatively-new brand is all about. Rosemark Grips’ “Tension Free Putting” grips are designed to fit into the hands perfectly, allowing the hands to hold the grip without adding pressure. This lets players control the putter with more fluidity and consistency without having to overly squeeze with the hands. The range of products falls into two categories: Microfiber Silicone (silicon nubs) and Neoprene (smooth leather feel). My review pack contained several Microfiber Silicone (MFS) grips to try, with the claim that they “wick away moisture whilst the silicone nubs provide tackiness and enhanced feel for greater control”. Obviously this has not been an ideal time to test golf equipment. Being based in the England, I have experienced two national lockdowns which has prevented access to golf courses for many weeks. To add to the horrible year, we returned to golf in December only to receive a deluge of rainfall causing the courses to close. Luckily, putting is one of the few golfing disciplines that is safe to do indoors, so I set about fitting the grips onto my test putters.

make me sensitive to larger grips, but Rosemark has a nice range of different sizes that even my small hands can benefit from. Anything that can reduce the tension in a putting stroke is a bonus, as it allows the player to swing the putter smoothly and at a consistent speed and tempo.

Admittedly, I am someone who generally accepts the stock grips that are pre-installed with putters I receive, under the assumption that the manufacturer has done the hard work for me and installed a grip that provides a good weight and balance for their product. With the first Rosemark grip in my hand, fitted on my Taylormade Spider X, my first impression was a definite feel of control over the putter. The silicone nubs allowed me to hold the putter grip a little looser than I tend to due to the additional ‘tackiness’ that the nubs provide. As I swung the putter, it gave me a sense of relaxation in my wrists and arms, therefore helping me to keep a constant momentum through the swing.

Out of the grips I tested, I felt that the 1.52 allowed me to comfortably hold the putter with the most control but with the softest tension. This was a surprise to me because a would have assumed that my smaller hands would have preferred the feel of the 1.25 grip which is closer to the size I commonly use. Perhaps the extra size and the larger number of silicone nubs was giving me that greater sense of control that I have not found in the past with larger putter grips. There is also a 1.38 lite in the range which is a longer grip, but I personally don’t use grips of that length but it may suit players with a more spaced-out grip.

I have tried larger putter grips in the past but have found that overly large grips prevent me from holding the putter correctly, causing me to grip with more tension. I wear a ladies ‘small’ glove size, so this does

A nice touch that Rosemark have incorporated into the design of the 1.25 and 1.52 is that they are exactly the same weight, meaning that a player can focus on finding the grip that is most comfortable to hold without have to compromise on the additional weight. Let’s not confuse the ‘feel’ of a putter with the measurable performance. I setup to hit 5 putts each from 5ft and 10ft to see if there was a noticeable difference in my holing out. Repeating this test 3 times during the day, I found that that my accuracy was better with the 1.25, despite my initial impression that the 1.52 sat in my hand more comfortably. So, perhaps when it came to the putting swing, my years of putting with something a little smaller was factoring into my test, but the reality is that I felt comfortable with both sizes of grip. Rosemark Grips provides a range of specialist putter grips with all the elements required to achieve better putting consistency. The variety of size, weight and length options allows any player to find a grip which will suit them and their game. I found their claim of “Tension Free Putting” to be a reality.

GOLFERS CBD REVIEW by Monique Smit

12

LADIESGOLFLifestyle

FEATURE

I

am Monique Smit, a ladies professional golfer on the Ladies European Tour and the Sunshine Ladies Tour.

I reached out to Andy from Golfers CBD after I played my event in Prague event after I chatted to a fellow pro Whitney who has been using the product and she was absolutely over the moon with what it has done for her. I put Golfers CBD in the bag for the last 4 events I had in Europe and South Africa. I love to call my Golfers CBD, my cool, calm and collected tool in the bag! I have been using the oil and the gummies and recently put the atomizer spray in the bag as a little top up for those last 3/4 holes. The results I have had has been brilliant! To make all the cuts with strong finishes has been amazing. I am personally a person who struggles with anxiety

and this has not only helped me on the course, but off it as well. I have find by using this product it helped me immensely with my mental health and being able to be in a frame of mind where I am calm and decision making is a lot clearer and easier. A lot less self doubt! WhetherI am practicing or playing, I am never without my oil and gummies! I have always been very skeptical about CBD and never tried it as I was scared that it would be fully safe, and really it was just a lack of education on my behalf about the product until I reached out to Whitney who got me in contact with Andy and we really had a great chat about. And the rest is history. I can truly say this a game changer for everyone. Not just professional golfers and golfers alike. But its a product for everyone thats looking for their cool, calm and collected!

MONIQUE SMIT

I

have been an avid campaigner on the Sunshine Ladies Tour since its inception in 2014 and I will never forget my first year on the SLT. I had already been playing for 2 years on the LET after getting conditional status in Jan of 2012 so to finally have a tour again back home was the best thing ever to get an early start on the season in preparation for the

14

LADIESGOLFLifestyle

upcoming season in Europe. Having the opportunity to be able to compete at home is always special for all of us and to see how the tour has gone from strength to strength over the years and to see the quality of the fields getting better and better has been fantastic and the scores!

FEATURE The start of the tour was very special for me having won twice in the season especially here at home in George is something I will never forget, having my mom on the bag for my first pro win and opening with a 63 at Oubaai which also happens to be my career best to date. Those are very special memories winning here at home and then following it up a few weeks later at the SuperSport Challenge was just a dream come true, you know just to make sure the first one wasn’t a fluke! To date I have won 4 times on the SLT with 2020 being a standout year after all the heartache of 2019 with my mom having been diagnosed with cancer and losing her at the end of 2019 and just a few weeks later having to compete at the 2020 LET q-school and having won that 4 way play-off was just surreal. I still can’t quite put into words just exactly how I did it those 3 weeks. I still think it was my mom keeping good watch over me and my ball! Starting the 2020 season me and my coach Peter Berman from Scratch Golf in Knysna had the goal to win an event again. That was the goal and we did it! I felt like the comeback kid at Soweto last year and that final round I just knew it was all going to be okay, if I kept hitting the shots and staying patient the putts will drop and they did indeed drop that day and to win again after 4 years was amazing and that truly was for mom. What can I say about the SA Open at Westlake, so so close! It was my first time in the 3 years that I actually made the cut, so that was a great start! And in 2019 Pete and I came up with a different approach to play more aggressively off the tee, get it out there and get in close to pins and that approach really payed off and we were also blessed not to be blown away which is always great! But going through the motions that week, my momentum keep building and my belief to win on the LET as well. We want to level up and to finish runner up last year solidified that. All the work that Pete and I were putting it, was coming through and I made those changes my own. Winning the Investec Order of Merit was really the cherry on top. I always knew I had a good chance at winning with a solid performance at the SA Open and finishing second did just that! All

the hours of work came together. Here in SA we are so blessed to have some of the best golf courses in the world! Notably The Links at Fancourt is probably my favourite course to compete on and having some home ground advantage never hurts! But here in the Garden Route we are spoilt for choice, George Golf Club for me is still one of my best course from green to tee, the layout, the condition is just super. Pinnacle is always great for the views, but take some extra balls, just in case! I am very blessed to have my base at Fancourt here in George and the facility to own my skills. On the SLT we are so spoiled to able to compete on the countries best courses, my favourite stop is always Glendower, if your up in Jo’burg its a must! Being a professional athlete living in George, South Africa has been what makes me, me. From the spoils of our courses, to the beauty that surrounds us not only here in the Garden Route, but really the whole of South Africa. I know SA has a bad rap for a few things, but really there is no other place where we can have a “braai” on a food fire like we do at home and its always the first thing I do when I get home! and don’t get me started with coffee! I am an

LADIESGOLFLifestyle

15

FEATURE

avid home barista and even took some online classes during our lockdown! I think I drove everyone mad with it and my cooking skills have really gotten better especially a “potjie” on the fire! I am a little biased to saying this, but there is no place like home! The best parts are not just playing, but being with family around the fire on the farm, my brown little border collie Yogi the Bogey and our horse of a great dane Luna and to have the team that I have all in one place is even better. From Peter Berman at Scratch Golf, Garth Milne from Wanna Be A Champion to Nicola Mostert that is my sports dietician. They contribute and push to make me the best version of myself. I am so proud to be a South African female professional golfer as well as a PGA member of South Africa and being part of growing golf on and off the golf course. I am so excited for whats to come for female golf in this country and seeing our amateurs golfers play with us on the SLT, our future is looking bright to have more South Africans on tour in time to come!

FEATURE of the countryside outside Barcelona – is another significant step towards our objective of being one of the leading golf and wellness destinations in the world, and we look forward to welcoming residents, members and guests.” Located next to the 5-star Hotel Camiral at the heart of the resort, the Wellness Centre is designed to invite the natural surroundings in, creating a haven away from the stresses of everyday life. Its design – crafted by the renowned Lagula Arquitectes – takes inspiration from the Japanese principles of unaltered natural beauty, quiet solitude and simplicity, blending seamlessly with the landscape and surrounding gardens. Guests will re-establish links with nature as they discover the different parts of the 1,000m² space, comprising nine treatment rooms, gym and yoga studios and thermal and water facilities set among areas that reflect gardens, forest clearings and waterfalls. Healing techniques are personalised for guests’ needs and accelerated by high-tech therapy normally only found at clinics or elite athlete facilities, including cryotherapy, vitamin infusions, hyperbaric oxygen and photomodulation. The Wellness Centre complements PGA Catalunya’s other amenities which support and promote physical and emotional wellbeing. A European Tour Destination, its two worldclass courses, the challenging Stadium with its exhilarating elevated tee shots and the shorter, friendlier Tour, are carefully designed to offer benefits beyond the euphoria of a well-struck shot. Both courses are also GEO Certified – golf ’s international ecolabel – and benefit from the expertise of a full-time biologist. The Golf Hub combines best-in-class performance golf technology and coaching with the fun-for-all enjoyment of a Toptracer gaming range. It is home to the Sergio Garcia Junior Golf Academy. Wellness is also integrated into the resort’s real estate, which will soon include the recentlypresented Well-Villa, an innovative property specifically designed to enrich the wellbeing of its occupants. ABOUT PGA CATALUNYA GOLF AND WELLNESS Opened in 1999, PGA Catalunya Golf and Wellness quickly established an international reputation for outstanding quality. It is ranked the number one resort in Spain by Golf World magazine, which also recognises the Stadium Course in its World Top 100 Courses. The 36-hole resort also offers two accommodation options – Hotel Camiral, a member of The Leading Hotels of The World and Girona's only 5* hotel, and LAVIDA Hotel, aimed at the active traveller. In addition, the European Tour Destination comprises a discreet, low-density real estate development, with first-class leisure facilities and a select number of villa plots, stylish modern semi-detached villas, and luxury apartments. Conveniently situated close to Girona-Costa Brava Airport (five-minute drive) and Barcelona International Airport (one-hour drive), the venue also benefits from the recently completed highspeed train line that links Girona (approximately 15 kilometres from PGA Catalunya Resort) to the rest of Spain and Europe, which provides even faster connections to major cities, including Barcelona, which can now be reached in only 37 minutes.

INDRA SPORTSWEAR

Co Founder, David Bergström

Q&A

INTERVIEW BY DAVID J NICHOLSON

Can you introduce your team to our readers? Louise Fröjdenlund, 28 years old, who embraces the passion for golf and equality (one of the strong reasons we started as you will read below) she is the founder of INDRA Sportswear, along with me David Bergström, 32 who is also a happy amateur golfer, seeking thrills and challenges in life, also working as CEO for INDRA. We have no previous experiences with the fashion industry, but we wanted to make a change and I think we will ! Please explain more about the sustainable development process for your apparel? We focus on close distributon in every detail of our products. Design in Sweden, garments from Italy, production in Poland and of course sustainable shipping packages. Also creating collections of slowfashion, wide range of sizes and customise orders to minimise the risk of customers choosing the wrong size, which often causes returns of the item. We also implement sustainable and recyclable fabrics in all our clothes. This to be able to create transparency in the whole process, sharing it with our customers to create awareness about the industry. In recent times ladies apparel has been poorly represented in pro shops & golf shops what is your target market demographics? First of all we will focus on our own platforms, e-commerce webshop and social media. This to be able to have control over the brand value, marketing and also to give easy access to all golfing women out there, providing world wide shipping. Can you offer our readers what collections will be available which & have you had any input from lady tour professionals? We will focus on base collections, and believe

32

LADIESGOLFLifestyle

in slow fashion even in golf. Available in two colors to start with. Then we will expand our collection together, with input from our community, the customers will also be able to help out in the process of choosing garments and colors. And we will offer a wide range of sizes (all women are different) and also be able to take some customize orders if needed. What are your future plans for the brand? To be able to support women all over the globe, supplying them with clothes made with passion. Creating a community where we can help out, express ourselves, sharing needs, ideas and creating bonds not only between us and our customers, but between them as well. A place for all equals, listening, sharing and working for them.

FEATURE THE HISTORY OF INDRA SPORTWEAR. During spring 2018 we, Louise Fröjdenlund (Founder) & David Bergström (Co Founder) of INDRA Sportswear discovered the fantastic atmosphere in the world of golf. Being able to make new relations with interesting people, along with entering fantastic landscapes breathing freshly, while practising what you love the most is totally amazing. On top of this is of course the fact that golf is a really fun but challenging sport, both in terms of mindset, concentration practice and physical improvements. But despite all the wonderful positivity that amazed us, Louise felt that there was something missing. She couldnt get rid of the thoughts she had about the trends and society, that golf still is a sport highly dominated by men, She believes that the sport is in the need of more women and communities for equals, inspiring each other. To add to this she had some trouble getting a wardrobe of golf clothes she liked, the lack of supply for younger women was a fact. The clothing were traditional clothes inspired by mens fashion or clothes with traditional fit. This was the original idea of a brand that really encouraged the amazing girls in golf, and supplied them with amazing garments. Building a network of golfing women, together being able to set trends and challenge old traditional patterns. Clothes that really embrace the figures of females, with elegance or sporty modern fashion, like other sports! Lately the trend has been more clothes borrowed from other sports, but it is hard to find a brand that

also embraces a sustainable and social responsibility. We want to be part of a sustainable, responsible, equal and transparent golf industry. INDRA will focus on transparent communication, on degradable or innovative materials. A social responsibility of slow fashion. INDRA will be able to control and create transparency throughout the product flow, thereby building good relationships with both suppliers and our customers. We use suppliers located in Europe. There is so much more to do, and this is only the beginning. So far, we can see an interest in the younger generation of women who have also been involved in our product development, where we make the adjustments requested with their help. By doing this we believe that we can create collections with passion and taste, rather than creating seasonal collections. We are launching a basic collection where each garment (of course) are named after great female golf players that contributed to the sport, The idea was presented by a girl on our social media, who helped out when we asked our community to help out. We will of course offer a big size range; womens shapes are different and we want to give this opportunity to everyone that wants to glow in INDRA apparel. In the near future our plan is to release several different colours in our basic collection, and at the same time expand with different and innovative garments. Our community will be very important to INDRA, we want them to help us develop new products, do upgrades of current products and materials, and use their opinions in a lot of decisions. We want to inspire not only by ourselves but by all the fantastic women that want to contribute to a better world and equal values, especially around the golf atmosphere.

Interview with

Rhys Enoch

CHALLENGE, SUNSHINE & EUROPEAN TOUR PROFESSIONAL BY DAVID J NICHOLSON

W

e started by discussing preparation in these challenging times

Rhys 'Preparations for upcoming season have been going well, fortunately I have been with my family in Potchefstroom, South Africa. This has enabled me to go to the gym and practice with relative freedom (alongside caring for a 18 month old ) so I feel pretty ready to go.'

36

MEN'SGOLFLifestyle

I was lucky to win the KitKat Group Pro Am which was our first event of the year on the Sunshine Tour. That was my second win on that tour now and I really feel a closeness to the tour. It’s helped me prepare for a different style of golf in heat, at altitude and with varying grasses. I really feel it’s more than a development tour but it has honed my skills and I feel so lucky to be able to have a home and friends away from home.

Q&A

Who inspired you to take up golf & role models. A. My Mum started us in golf as something that my brother, myself and Mum could all do together. We had no real background in golf as a family at all. Rugby was our thing until that point. Tiger Woods was my favourite golfer by a mile growing up. Your early experience of amateur golf & inspiration to turn Pro. I won my club championship just before my 15th birthday which was pretty cool, soon after that the thoughts of turning professional started to take shape.

Your current sponsors & the importance of media support to help find sponsorship. I am currently very fortunate to be helped

Media support through photos at events help massively with the exposure of our brands, Instagram and other such platforms have also transformed the potential for new sponsors as well. Your based in the SW how does playing links golf benefit you developing. I grew up very close to Perranporth GC where I was a member as a junior. The thing with growing up around links golf is you inevitably play in a near hurricane a few times a year and it teaches you different lessons that can transfer to my game even now on the big professional tours. I feel very lucky to have experienced so many different golf environments already. The difference now your a father & it's challenges being on tour. The Father challenge is unlike anything else, how much a little guy can rely on you is frightening. It certainly brings a new perspective to golf and adds extra sweetness to good performances and also more perspective to poor ones. As I write this I’m almost 4 weeks away from Carter and my Wife Lynn and it’s tough, seeing him point to the phone and say Dada is tough. He’s almost accepted that our relationship is that way which is heart breaking. Hobbies away from golf I love sports in general, if I can I race Go Karts, watch F1, Rugby, go to the gym and even play touch rugby when I can.

38

MEN'SGOLFLifestyle

Your ambitions for 2021 & challenges of the last 12 months. Ambitions are certainly to get a full ET card for 2022, one of my early goals to win on ST and CT have come through with the Sunshine Tour win 2 weeks ago which is great. The past 12 months have been very tough but honestly for us a family it’s been amazing to have as much time to bond with Carter as I have and I wouldn’t have changed it. The AfraAsia Bank Tri Sanctioned Tour in Mauritius was an amazing experience when I covered it for media. What other tournaments & golf courses stand out for you. The Dimension Data pro am on the Sunshine tour is an incredible event, the 3 courses, the amateurs, the venue it’s just special for everyone involved. The Alfred Dunhill at Leopard Creek on ET and ST is an amazing week also. Course, facilities and to be able to go in to the Kruger park is a bonus! Obviously Major championships tend to stand out also. The whole vibe of the week is different and the courses tend to be first class!

It was always a toss up between rugby and golf, however I chose to focus my time on golf when I was 15 as I enjoyed the solo endeavors of the game. APES HILL, BARBADOS, aiming to become the best golfing experience in the Caribbean.

pes Hill, a private members’ club and residential community in Barbados, is relaunching under new ownership with a mission to be “the best golfing experience in the Caribbean.” Currently undergoing a major £24 million renovation which is scheduled for completion in November 2021, the project is being led by a world class team including renowned golf course designer Ron Kirby whose career spans countless elite courses across the globe including the Old Head in Ireland. location with views across both the west and east coasts. Barbados has always been a popular destination for tourists, but in today’s changing world, it is developing an enviable reputation amongst second homeowners and remote workers with its responsible health care, stable infrastructure, safety, the fastest internet connection in the Caribbean, and year-round perfect weather. Apes Hill will have a fully renovated 18 Hole, Par 72 championship golf course, with 12 sea view holes with 2 of these boasting views of both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. A 19th Hole is being added in front of the Clubhouse as a bit of fun, modelled after

the 17th Hole at TPC Sawgrass in Florida, and features an island green. A new Par 3 course will have a relaxed dress policy with guests able to play in flip flops, should they wish – the first of its kind in Barbados. Other golf facilities will include the Golf Performance and Teaching Centre with a state-of-the-art Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) and swing bio-mechanics analysis bay, to bring the best physical and technical capabilities out of every golfer. Recreational and hospitality facilities will include a renovated Club House with concierge, the Drunken Monkey bar and veranda restaurant, outdoor calisthenic gym, a fitness and paddle sports centre with the indoor gym overlooking the lap pool and Zen yoga garden. Commenting on the purchase, Glenn Chamandy says: “I have been coming to Barbados for over twenty years and built a home here for our family. For me it’s the best place to live in the Caribbean and I have many

good friends here now. When Apes Hill became available last year, I felt it had the potential, with all of its natural beauty, gullies and views over both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean on the wild east coast, to create the best golfing experience in the Caribbean, and a community where family and friends can enjoy time together. “Golfing is more than just the golf course, it is all about what you do before hand – accessing great training and practice facilities, and what you do when you’re not playing golf – having a great bar and restaurant to socialize in. Members at Apes Hill will be able to enjoy hiking and cycling on the nature trails in our gullies, go fishing in the reservoir, and have fun at all the Club facilities. We want Apes Hill to take your breath away in many different ways - being environmentally responsible, visually beautiful, and authentically the best of Barbados.” Set to employ over 100 local people through construction, hospitality, golf course and guest service jobs, the redesign of Apes Hill will provide an unrivalled community where you can come as you are and live well.
