A Letter from the Editor
Baby It’s Cold Outside Hello everyone! We are back with Issue 2. We had such a great response with our Fall issue that I couldn’t wait to get Issue 2 on the virtual stands. I want to thank everyone who worked hard making our first issue such a great success. Since September, IDWN has been preparing for our Winter Issue as well as the Something Old, Something New Hunt which will be running from November 1st-30th. We are trying a first with the SOSN Hunt. We have put all the hints and pictures for the hunt in this issue. We thought it would be fun to challenge our hunters. If it proves to be successful, we may use it again in future hunts. In this issue, we are exploring the Winter Wonderlands of Second Life. We discovered there are many great locations for romance in the snow and colorful dresses to keep you from falling into the winter blues. I have a few people to thank this issue for being so generous to IDWN.
First, I want to personally thank Mami Jewel of Azul for donating such a beautiful wedding gown they donated to us to showcase on our cover. It is the Aphrodite Gown located at Azul on the 3rd floor. Available for $2500 L and worth every Linden. Then I want to thank Happy Hunting for inviting us on their fantastic show to discuss the SOSN Hunt. What a neat experience that was for me. This issue IDWN’s Manager and SL’s hottest DJ, Serbon Cobalt, answers: “How do I find the right DJ to play at my wedding?” It is always important to ask questions of your potential DJ. Just as in RL, you want to make sure that the person you are hiring knows what he or she is doing, can follow instructions, and be professional throughout your event. I have compiled 15 questions to help you find the best pick for your special day.
9. If the event lasts longer than scheduled, what are the overtime charges? 10. When can I expect to receive my contract from you? 11. How much time will you need for setup, sound check on the day of the event?
1. Do you have my date open? 2. How long have you been business? 3. How many weddings have you done? How many do you do in an average weekend?
12. Can you assist me in choosing the music for my processional, recessional, Father-Daughter Dance, etc.? And will this cost extra?
4. What sets you apart from your competition?
13. How extensive is your music library or song list? What genres can you cover? Can I give you a specific list of songs I want or don’t want played
5. Are there any other services that you provide, such as lighting design?
14. My Wedding might be off the wall in terms of theme... Can you still do this?
6. How far in advance do I need to secure your services? 7. Can you provide me with 2 - 3 recent brides that I can contact for references? 8. What is your pricing? Does this include music for the ceremony and reception? a. How much is the deposit and when is it due? b. When is the final payment due? c. What is your refund policy if for some reason I need to cancel or alter my date?
(All professional entertainers have access to formal wear (if they don’t, that’s your first clue they’re not professionals!) However, it is YOUR responsibility to be specific about how you expect your performers to be dressed. Any extraordinary requests (period costumes, all-white tuxes, etc.)).
15. Do I get a discount if I refer you to my friends? If you take the time to research your DJ, you can avoid last minute disasters that will prevent you from fully enjoying your day. eggie opened Charming Beginnings in 2006 under her original account Pammie Charming. Her roots were planted while she managed a friend’s wedding business who then gave Peggy ownership of the wedding business. About a year ago, she grew from a 1/4 sim to a full sim with shops and three full venues that she runs with her husband Leland Maggs. Her inspiration for her business stems from her love of weddings and making people happy. She saw other wedding businesses and planners charging high prices for pre-fabed venues and sets, when once created does not take too long to make a few minor adjustments for new clients. Peggie said, “...I just don’t think 25k-50k is justified for a virtual wedding, especially when you look at statistics, most [Second Life] marriages don’t last more than a few months...” When asked what her hardest challenge has been running her business she responded “Working with all the different time zones we have in SL it is very challenging when scheduling rehearsals and weddings.” But despite the challenges it seems that Peggie stays motivated with the reward of happy and satisfied customers. “Having clients come back to me after one, two, or more years still happily married and say ‘You did our first wedding and we would love you to do our renewal’, that’s my most rewarding experience.” Besides the satisfaction of returning clients, her love of weddings keeps her going. “I love seeing my couples get so excited when they come to pick a venue or see how nervous some of my grooms get as they see their bride walking up the isle to them. I’ve actually had a couple say, ‘Is it normal to sweat this much over an SL wedding?’ Lol”. So what advice does this experienced wedding enthusiast have for couples planning their first or third wedding? “Just to communicate with each other about the planning, don’t one of you take over, it should be a joint planned affair and just have fun and hopefully you’ll come visit me at Charming Beginnings so you can have a stress free wedding at a very fair price.” As for any future plans, Peggie says she is happy with her three full venues and shopping center whose tenants include a few elite creators like Azul, Virtual Impressions, High Society by SF Design, and Dreamscape Weddings. The air is crisp and the ground is covered in soft white snow. Winter doesn’t have to
be cold when it comes to a wedding. It’s easily spiced up with color that complements the season. Embrace the snow on the ground to add a splash of color, embrace no leaves on the trees with magical twinkling lights. Winter weddings have so much to offer and I plan to show you some of this seasons fashion trends by setting the mood with color trending style. Pantone is the go to authority for color resources for designs. There forecast are posted the year before for all those planning special events such as a wedding but for Second life a year to plan a wedding seems a bit too long. The current fashion is what most are looking for and seeing how weddings can be planned in weeks compared to months or even years. I will be illustrating what’s in now rather than what will be in fashion next year. It’s all about setting the mood and painting the picture it with an array of color to give feeling to your event. To show some of the fashion trends this season, I am going to take some quotes from the Pantone website to show what is being done with this seasons color.
