¿Que Pasa? What’s up? A lot! Pete and Molly Spear’s name for the first update booklet has proven prophetic. After you search out your friends,* I hope you find time to read ¿Que Pasa? from cover to cover. You’ll rediscover why you love our class. Compiling the entries, I lived out Romans 12:15, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn,” culminating with the final entry, which lists our classmates who have died. If you know of additions, please contact Houghton (Phyllis.Gaerte@houghton.edu) or me and I will pass on what information you have.
—Lori Mulligan Davis lorimulligandavis@gmail.com 630-363-9289 *I alphabetized by first names because using maiden names got complicated and married names rendered half our classmates incognito.
Al Presher
21 Birling Gap, Fairport, NY 14450; home: 585-223-5427, cell: 585-317-5802; apresher@rochester.rr.com On Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn Family Update: I’ve been married to Dorothy Paul Presher (Wheaton College, class of ’77) for 36 years. Our daughter, Katharine Carlson, met her husband Brian at Gordon College, and lives in the Boston area. Our son, also a Brian, works in Washington, DC, and graduated from Houghton in 2009. We have a grandchild, Quinn Sinclair Carlson, not yet two, who made me a proud Pop Pop. Education after Houghton: Syracuse Newhouse School, MA in Communication, with an emphasis in Magazine Journalism. Occupation Update: In 2002, I started Stratejus Inc. (www.stratejus.com) which primarily focuses on website design and development but also creates a wide range of marketing communications. I also write blog posts and work as an editor for two technology magazines/websites in the areas of industrial automation and control, robotics and the Internet of Things. My wife, Dorothy, works as a preschool teacher. Service/Church Involvement: Through the years, I have been an adult Sunday-school teacher and class leader, and served on various committees at Browncroft Community Church, just outside of Rochester, NY. I worked as a Christian Service Brigade leader, and spent eight years as a senior-high-youth leader. Adult youth leaders at our church are encouraged to stay with a single class throughout their high-school years, so I went through the cycle twice. As part of that, I had the privilege to go on eight short-term summer mission trips with the youth—several working with major inner-city ministries and also international trips to Mexico City, Jamaica, and St. Vincent. In My Spare Time . . . Dorothy and I enjoy our cottage on Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes where we hope to retire. Most any warm weekend, I’m there hiking or enjoying the water. I love kayaking, fishing, and sailing. My Time at Houghton Majors: Writing (non-fiction) and English Literature. Minor: Philosophy. Favorite Professors: Jim and Nancy Barcus Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: The Society for Nocturnal Morality. Looking back now, I realize how much I learned about the Body of Christ and how it should operate, primarily from my experiences with our class. Far too many adults, even in the church, may not have a significant network of friends that they relate well with and that they feel understand them. Even after 40 years, I’m sure that, as a group, we can to a great extent “pick-up where we left off” because of our shared experience and faith. Our journeys have been different but I’m looking forward to renewing relationships and hearing what has been happening collectively with the Houghton Class of ’77.

While I’m home, I enjoy playing with grandkids, playing tennis, backpacking, kayaking, playing with grandkids, and being with my children. My Time at Houghton Majors: Elementary Education and Psychology Favorite Professors: Dr. Worthington (a gifted man) and LOLA (Dr. Haller) Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Coming from Brooklyn, I had culture shock. But I studied under godly professors and received a good education. In August of 1977, I was hired as a Reading Specialist in Cincinnati, OH, and immediately walked out of the school to the phone booth in the parking lot. I called Dr. Worthington and told him I was just hired as a Reading Specialist and had no idea what to do. He kindly gave me a few pointers and got me going in the right direction. He probably wondered if I’d listened to anything in his classes. Now, as a seasoned veteran, I am finally retiring. Some people (my sister Barb Olsen Cass of 1987 included) say the best years of their lives were during college at Houghton. My “best years” were staying home, raising our three children. I just loved bein with my daughter and two sons. I loved their teen and college years as well. Our sons graduated from Houghton and have great Houghton wives. I also love ministry—all kinds of children’s ministry, including Child Evangelism Fellowship, community Bible study, 12 short-term mission trips, and my favorite workshop presentation is on effective and creative methods for teaching Bible stories to children. I did squeeze in 29 years of public school teaching.

Chris Canfield
50 VanBuren Drive Fulton, NY 13069; 315-598-6627; chriscanfield@earthlink.net Family Update: I’m married to Windy (Debbie) McKay 1976. Education after Houghton: MBA from College of William and Mary 1982. Occupation Update: Manager at Canfield Machine and Tool LLC Service/Church Involvement: Currently teach Sunday school up to 3rd grade, but most often taught 4th-6th grade. One 4th grader from years ago is now a professor at Houghton. Also on admin council. In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy spending time with family, reading and working on projects around the house. My Time at Houghton Major: Business. Minor: Economics. Favorite Professors: Warren Woolsey and Arnold Cook Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: I’ll start with a serious memory. In 1975, being part of the torchlight procession welcoming John and Carolyn Miller back from 8 months captivity in Vietnam is a wonderful memory for me. In 2003, while Windy was teaching an auditing course for Houghton in Thailand, we spent an evening at the Miller’s home and they told us how special that torchlight night was for them. Now a not-so-serious memory: A desirable walking route to campus from where I stayed at Strimple house crossed the lawn of a neighboring homeowner. It was not in the forefront of our minds that the homeowner would not appreciate the path we created across his lawn. One day he let us know in no uncertain terms what he thought, and rather stunned, we retreated to come up with a plan. Several days later in the middle of the night, a group of us were outside his house watching Dave Irwin write a message on one of his windows. Dave had a poetic way about him. I can’t recall his exact words, but it made clear we were going to lay down concrete. Living in the basement of Strimple house meant that detective Strimple lived upstairs. It wasn’t long before he figured out who was guilty and our punishment was to apologize and to promise not to walk on our neighbors grass again. Our neighbor graciously accepted our apology and then asked which one of us wrote on his window. When Dave stepped forward, our neighbor told him it was his bedroom window and he came very close to putting his fist through the window to grab him. Now as a trustee of Houghton, Dave plays a role in capital building projects. Not a surprise that laying down concrete was on his mind 40 years ago. My favorite course in college was Modern Missions with professor Woolsey. In the 40 years since graduation God has given Windy and me some great opportunities to see how “modern missions” is changing. Twenty-two years ago, Windy began doing Internal Audits for Wycliffe, as a volunteer, usually once but sometimes two or three times a year. After the first several years, I started assisting her on most of the audits, and I thank God for the privilege this has been. We’ve seen how God is working in many countries to get the Bible translated into languages that don’t have it. In 2015, we crossed paths in Kenya with classmates Paul and Kyle Kroening. Their many years committed to serving God with Wycliffe is inspiring and humbling.

Service/Church Involvement: Bible Study Fellowship group leader for the last four years (shepherding a group of 12 to 14 women for the course of 32 weeks). Foster parent group at our church.
In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy attending classical music and Christian music concerts, reading, swimming, gardening, walking in the parks. My Time at Houghton Major: Music. Minor: Bible. Favorite Professors: Dr. Bailey and Mr. Jacobson Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: My dorm for my freshman year was East Hall and I was placed on the 4th Floor Old Wing. We called ourselves the 4th Oldies. We were all so different, but we had such a great time on that floor. Linda Vandenburg was our RA. Some of the great belly laughs of my life were on that floor that year. There were pranks and laughter, but there were also times of prayer. It was amazing. After three years at Houghton, I transferred to nursing school at Emory, so when I graduated from Emory, I was able to obtain a degree from Houghton in absentia. For 33 years I have worked as a nurse in a cardiac unit, public health, overseas public health with refugees, but mostly neonatal care. At the same time, I continued to serve in music ministry in my church, in choirs and then worship teams, singing and playing my flute. I took two medical mission trips and was worn out by them. Then I took several mission trips which involved prayer and doing worship concerts and found my niche. Mike and I married when I was 41; a song he used to sing to me during that time was “Broken Road” by Rascal Flats. And so it was, as we had both been through some major disappointments. Much of our focus has been with Mike’s work as a caseworker resettling refugees through World Relief. We also had a time of about eight years of caring for aging parents. I also ran for a public office in 2012, for tate house representative for our district and lost. (But it was a GREAT experience.) Since becoming foster parents, much of my focus has had to be on the multiple needs of the children we receive.

In Little Rock, I met Rick Campbell “and the rest is history.” I am thankful for God’s grace across my life. To dwell on His blessings in summarizing the 36 years of “history” after I met Rick, I have enjoyed and am thankful for: celebrating 35 years of marriage; parenting a son and daughter; adding a granddaughter (with whom we are completely smitten) to our family, and anticipating two more grandchildren due this year; serving in our church and community; meeting new friends in new places; working for a governor; working for/retiring from a financial services and technology provider after 34 years; and discovering the gift of daily life and softer edges

After Houghton, I went to Asbury for further studies. It was there I met my best friend and husband, Denman Gillett. I was ordained an elder in the Free Methodist church and served with Denman for a few years in Akron, NY. The Lord led us to Arkansas and the United Methodist church, where we have remained. Our two children were born in Arkansas, and I became a stay-at-home mom while remaining an active volunteer in the churches that Denman served. One day I received a call from our children’s elementary school, asking if I would like to be an aide in a special-education classroom. I agreed, and from that
starting point, I eventually became a dually certified teacher for regular and special-education students. I am a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Exceptional Needs Specialist. But all good things must come to an end, and I will retire this May. God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good. Praise God from Whom all blessings flow.

Education after Houghton: Master’s of Education from SUNY at Plattsburgh; Master’s level school administrator classes. Occupation Update: After completing 40 years of teaching and school administration, I am retiring in June from the school arena. After that, a new job SOMEWHERE with SOME unknown business. Service/Church Involvement: I have spent my career ministering in Christian schools. During that time, I have served on numerous accrediting teams and chaired our own accreditation process three times. I teach the adult Sunday-school class for our church and serve on the Church Board currently. I am also president of the Missions International program at our church. I have worked with the youth group for many years and coached Bible quizzing. Missions is a vital part of my make-up so I have gone on many short-term missions trips. My most memorable ones have been to Russia (twice). In My Spare Time . . . I love to read, garden, and cook. When I take the time, I enjoy crocheting. Any time I can get to the beach, I am there! My Time at Houghton Majors: Elementary Education and Social Sciences. Minor: History. Favorite Professor: Dr. Kay Lindley Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: A fond memory is the ice storm we had during exam week. The power first went off when I was attending a concert in the chapel. With the curtains shut, the blackness was intense. The concert pianist kept us all calm and in place while entertaining us. I think the power was on and off for about three days. We were allowed to light candles in the dorm. Science students studied in the labs by Bunsen burner. Meals were served at random times when the kitchen had power to cook meals. We waited for an announcement that the dining hall was open. My first few years after leaving college were full of transition and moving around—kind of finding myself and where God wanted me to end up (probably like many of us). Eventually, God moved me to Connecticut and I have now been here for 36 years. I have taught at the same school for 34 years—The Cornerstone Christian School. This place has become my family, my church, and my community. Thinking about retiring is definitely bittersweet. About twenty years ago, I met my husband, Stephen. He brought joy and love into my life and showed me things about myself I never knew. It has certainly been an adventure figuring all this out over the years because Stephen does not have an “off” button. So, life is never dull. He is constantly thinking missionally. We love to go on missions trips in the summer, and we have a special heart for a little church in Ulyanich, Russia. We are planning a trip to Israel in the near future.

My Time at Houghton Majors: Elementary Education and Spanish Favorite Professor: All of them! Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Being challenged to grow in my Christian faith and worldview. Also, the zany Senate Spot talent shows of Class of ’77!
In the past 40 years I have experienced a deepening of my faith and trust in Christ, which has taught me the importance of “being yourself “ and letting God express His love through whatever talents, opportunities, and influence you may have. Some of the highlights of my journey have been the joys and challenges of being a wife and mother; church participation in fellowship, learning and ministry; being a professional singer, with its excitement of live performance and creativity; and developing meaningful relationships with people. My favorite thought to ponder comes from Rick Warren’s The Purpose-Driven Life: That our whole life on earth is just the title page of our own personal book that will go on into eternity. This helps me when I find myself getting anxious over my failures or lack of desired experiences and accomplishments. Life is brief and in a single instant I can be transported from paralyzing fear to a living hope of eternity I have through Christ. It also takes my focus off of myself and humbles me to truly love others by sharing the gospel. I am so thankful for the part that the people of Houghton College played in this journey!

When I look back on these 40 years post-Houghton, I’m so glad I was able to begin my adult life with an excellent education and a firm spiritual foundation. Here’s what I’m most pleased to have accomplished: 1—Being able to build and maintain a strong Christian marriage that’s been blessed with two wonderful children who are well put together and happily married. 2—Being able to learn book design, earn a living with it, and stay current in it. 3—Being able to make a fulfilling life in a small town in South Jersey after having lived in New York City and North Jersey.

I enjoy golfing with my boys, MLS Union Soccer Games, dating Kim. I spent four years at Dallas Seminary. After my first year, I married Kim Rothenbuhler and returned to Dallas where she taught for three years in the Dallas Independent School District in the inner city. We moved then to Newton, PA, and joined with 19 people to launch the start of Bible Fellowship Evangelical Free Church. God blessed our lives with three sons during the ’80s. After 21 years as a senior pastor, I resigned. I took a few years hiatus before joining with Grace Point, in Newton, PA, and accepting the call as Pastor of Connection. We’ve now served 10 years at Grace Point, and after 35 years in Bucks County, we call this home.

On Facebook Family Update: Married for 39 years to Diane Davis, whom I met during my senior year while in Washington, DC, American Studies Program. We have two children: Amanda (34) who lives in Oklahoma City with her husband, Martin Howell, and Spencer (31) who lives in San Diego. Service/Church Involvement: Ordained as a minister in the Church of the Nazarene 2005. Have served the local church in a variety of capacities and on nonprofit boards. Currently serve on the board of the Oklahoma Business Ethics Consortium and teach an adult Sunday-school class. Education after Houghton: Syracuse University College of Law in 1980. Occupation Update: Practiced trial law for 34 years, and then migrated to the nonprofit world, where I now serve as CEO of a 110-year-old social-service agency, Sunbeam Family Services, serving the poor and working poor in central Oklahoma through early childhood education, counseling, foster care, and senior services. In My Spare Time . . . I like to read, run on trails, bike, play with my dogs, and write a weekly newspaper column called “Family Talk,” dealing with family topics. My Time at Houghton Major: History. Minors: Philosophy and Speech. Favorite Professors: Larry Mullen, Kay Lindley, Smilin’ Jack and Dirty Harry Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: How much fun I had with THE GLEE CLUB (rehearsals were always funnier than the performances, at least in our opinion!), Dayspring singing ministry, intramural basketball and softball, Midnight Thumpers, The Society for Nocturnal Morality, serenading the girls’ dorms at night, and pranking security, including the large Bingo sign we hung from the roof of Wesley Chapel one Saturday night. Oh—and the excellent education I received which was wedged in amongst the previously listed priority activities. I have found great joy and satisfaction in making my family a priority while handling a demanding career as a trial lawyer. I have been very active in our community and have written a weekly column in Oklahoma City’s general circulation newspaper for 12 years--also three books, none of which has yet won the Pulitzer Prize. I made an unsuccessful statewide run for Oklahoma Attorney General in 2010 and have mostly given up on the idea of running for public office again. I have thoroughly enjoyed the transition to nonprofit work, first working at a small addiction-education nonprofit and now in a much larger agency, Sunbeam. I have been fortunate to have very few complications from my Type 1 diabetes, which I acquired just a few months before starting at Houghton. The Lord has been very gracious to us and we are profoundly grateful. Like many, we have faced numerous challenges over the past 40 years, but God has been faithful and gracious to us.

We have a little gray cat who is my shadow when I am home. Jeff is following a dream he has had all his life, practically. He is singing with a southern gospel quartet called 4HisLove, which is what brought us to Kansas City in the first place. If you look them up on Facebook, you can play videos of them singing. He is also writing music for his group and in the process of getting songs to other groups as well. He is the booking agent for them too. Beyond that, we are two old people learning how to live life on God’s terms. For us, He is the reason for it all.

Education Update: MA in Student Personnel from Buffalo State University; MA in Rhetoric and Composition from Oregon State University; PhD in English and Composition from Washington State University. Occupation Update: Assistant professor of English at Clarion University in Clarion, PA, where I have developed two new courses: Autobiographical Writing, and People and Animals in Literature and Film. Service/Church Involvement: Serving communion to home-bound members of my church; disaster-relief work in Lycoming County, PA, after a major flood; rescue-dog transport driver for Liberty Train Rescue and Transport, Echo White Shepherd Rescue, and National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network. At my local animal shelter, TriCounty Animal Rescue Center, I write small grants for the shelter, write dog descriptions for adoption sites, care for dogs in the kennel, foster special-needs dogs, and matchmake dogs with people for placement in forever homes. In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy spending time with friends, going for long hikes or snowshoeing with my dogs, reading good books (just finished re-reading the Harry Potter series), watching The Walking Dead, skimming Facebook, writing creative adoption-site dog descriptions for my local shelter, gardening and yard wok, engaging in anything that distracts me from grading student papers. My Time at Houghton Major: English. Minor: biology. Favorite Professors: Leax, Jake, Dr. Whiting, Dr. Cook Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: After curfew one night, Cindy (Boyes) Kewley (the ARD of East Hall) and I walked across the roof of the Campus Center with Sam-the-Security-Man, dressed in his too-tight khaki pants and
shirt. Sam wanted to show us the stars. Up on that roof so many adventures seemed possible. Afterward, Sam led us from the roof down to the Dining Hall, which was dark and locked up and humming with the white noise of the big coolers back behind the pot room, but Sam had keys to everything, so we found some leftover slices of lemon meringue pie in one of the coolers, individually wrapped on little plates, which we ate with the kind of reckless glee you feel when you think you are getting away with something. Afterward, Sam walked us back outside in the dark (I can still remember the click of his heels on the sidewalk) to the dimly lit lobby of East Hall, where absolutely no one was waiting up for us, or even knew we had gone missing. . . . I made such wonderful Houghton friends—people who hugged me and prayed with me, and listened to me, and encouraged me and made me laugh—that leaving that to return to a troubled family and uncertain job prospects was hard. But I always believed hard things were good for me, so I kept trying to find the place where I belonged. My first job was at a Crisis Intervention Shelter run by the Salvation Army in the worst precinct of Hartford, CT, where I gained a different appreciation for the word “humanity.” After that I worked for an agency that served former psychiatric patients, then at a school for Native American children in Chamberlain, SD, run by Jesuit priests, and after that—wow—I got to go back to Houghton to be the RD of East Hall (a place I loved and where I clearly belonged!); I earned my Master’s in Student Personnel. After seven years as a Hall director, including a year with Scott Makin at LeTourneau College in Longview, TX, and four years at George Fox College in Newburg, OR, I felt burnt out “living” with college students. Maybe I could “teach” them instead. I completed a Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition at Oregon State University, then continued on to Washington State University where I earned my PhD in English. These days, I see myself as a rogue academic—in recent years I have strayed away from sitting on university committees, or writing conference papers, in favor of the better joy I experience spending time with friends and fellow animal rescue people, or rambling through fields and woods in local game lands with my dogs River, Katey, Gabe, and Liberty.

Service/Church Involvement: At the last reunion, I told about my surprise landing in the Catholic church in 2006. We are members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Concord, where I am on staff as the bookstore manager. I lead a monthly book club through the store. I am also on Parish Council and over the years have been involved in Faith Formation, Bible studies, Cursillo Team, cooking for events. . . . God has blessed and made use of me here! In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy daily walks and swimming laps (a love I’ve discovered since our downsize to a condo with a little-used indoor pool!), reading, food, wine, good coffee, church, day trips anywhere, weekend trips to Burlington to visit Anna, our dogs, bird-watching, winter visits to Venice, FL, summer camping vacations to Casco Bay, ME, and camping with my extended family (including parents in their 80s) in Vermont. My Time at Houghton Majors: English and Writing. Minors: French and Psychology. Favorite Professors: The Barcuses Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: My favorite memories of Houghton are of just being there on a daily basis, that time of life and that feeling that anything can happen, running into friends anywhere we went. Also the great singing; I don’t remember being anywhere since with so many people singing hymns with as much gusto as at Houghton. I think most fondly of the everyday stuff with some of the truly best people I could have spent four years with. I’m very grateful for it all. I am not good at a life summary. I am thankful for so much, and know God has been with me always, through my mistakes, failures, regrets, joys, successes, and blessings. A couple of years ago, we started to feel like simplifying and detaching a bit from stuff, so we sold our house of 18 years and bought a condo. It was a big
change because I had very much identified with my house, but we are glad we did it and feel lighter and more ready for whatever comes up. God is good. Blessings to all of you. I had intended to be there for the reunion and had made my reservations, but a couple of family conflicts came up that just made it too complicated. I’ll be missing you and thinking of you during the weekend. I know you’ll have a blast.

He now resides in Absolut at Houghton. At the end of June 2016, our youngest, Jamie, known more recently as Molly, died of substance abuse while living in Portland, OR. I am so thankful that we were all together in one of our favorite places, Chincoteague, VA, just two weeks prior. These last few years have been years of grief and loss, but also times of joy with the birth of my granddaughters a year apart. Dani, born 7 weeks early on March 24, 2017, was named in honor of her grandfather. She is doing wonderfully. This year spent living near my daughter Caitlin, her husband, Niko, and their daughter, Ariadne, has been a true gift.

Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Short sheeting a friend’s bed. The last three years, I’ve wintered in Naples, Florida. It has been great to see sunshine most of the time and green everywhere, and to go for many walks. My Dad lives nearby, so I’m able to spend time with him, which is great.

Occupation Update: Have been an L&D RN, childbirth educator, and doula for 30+ years, and now am medical missionary in Lira, Uganda, with United World Mission. Service/Church Involvement: Medical missionary service x 12 years short-term, now fulltime for the last three years. In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy emailing or Skyping with friends and family at home in the US, reading, listening to music, cooking, and playing board games with friends. My Time at Houghton Majors: Psychology and Sociology. Minor: English. Favorite Professor: Dr. Barcus Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Loved the Senate Spots, and traveling and singing with Dayspring. I also loved clowning around with my roomie Beth (Mattke) Long. Performing “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” with Valerie Mills and Becky Hubbard, complete with World War Two-era dresses, was a highlight, too. God has blessed me with three wonderful sons, two of whom are married and have three children each (five boys and one girl, ranging in ages from three months to seven years old). Sadly, my marriage was never happy, and after 26 very difficult years, John and I separated and eventually divorced. During the years after my
separation, however, God gave me a wonderful opportunity to serve on a short-term mission team to Africa, and it was there that I found spiritual and emotional healing, and the “new thing” that God had promised me (Is. 43:1819) in those dark days. God’s redemptive love has made the way for me to find my purpose, which is sharing God’s love, healing, and hope with women who have suffered so much worse than I have in war-torn northern Uganda. I am now serving as a long-term medical missionary with United World Mission in Lira, Uganda. God has given me a ministry, in partnership with local Ugandan healthcare professionals, emotional trauma counselors, and church leaders, to village women and children. We use medical and emotional trauma outreach as a means to share the Good News of new life and redemption through Jesus Christ. While I am sad for the loss of my marriage, I marvel at God’s orchestration of all the events of my life that have worked together to bring me to Uganda for “such a time as this.” He is a good, good Father who delights in trading His beauty for my ashes!

Forty years! Unbelievable. The days were long but the years were short. Molly and I have three children, all three went to Houghton. Two of the three are married, and we have 6 grandsons. As Psalm 127 says, PJS version, our quiver is full of Spears. Nineteen years ago, we intentionally moved back to the Houghton area to be
near Molly’s dad and my mom. We are so glad we got/get to spend time with our parents in their twilight years. Molly’s dad passed away in 2007, but we had eight great years of very frequent connection. My mom lives in Houghton, and she attends our church. Molly plays cards with her every lunch. My mom has been an integral part of our kids’ (and now grandkids’) lives. One of the great joys I have as a pastor is planning worship with my mom, who’d of thought. I serve as the solo pastor of First Baptist Church of Franklinville. I also substitute teach and coach at Franklinville Central School. I get to pursue both pastoral ministry and influencing lives for Christ in a public school. Our lives have not taken the path we thought they would as we left Houghton. I taught school for 5 years and have been a pastor for 35 years. Molly has paid a high price for my calling, being a pastor’s wife is not what she signed up for. Through shattered dreams, dark nights of the soul and plenty of grace and mercy we are still climbing the upward calling together.

Our daughter, Sarah, married her high-school sweetheart last year and moved back to the Chicago area. We are looking to move from Minnesota in the next year or so to a warmer climate. Education after Houghton: I began pursuing a Master’s degree several years after graduating from Houghton, completing an MS in Information Technology in 2010. I’ve also pursued professional certifications and completed my PMP (Project Management Professional) certification in 2007 and CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) in 2008. I continue to take professional training courses to update my skills. Occupation Update: I’ve been a professional project manager for over 25 years and continue to be involved in it. In 2014 I joined SecureWorks, a Dell Technologies company where I have been a project and program manager supporting large clients across the country. Service/Church Involvement: My wife and I have always been active in our local church. We’ve taught kids’ Sunday school (elementary and junior high), led Bible studies in our home, and I have always been involved in Men’s ministry activities wherever we attend. We also participated in short-term mission’s projects and led a team of high schoolers on a two-week trip to Alaska to direct a vacation Bible school for Native American kids. From 1997-1998, we were short-term missionaries in Alaska, working at the Alaska Bible College setting up a campus computer system. While there, we also participated in local ministries with students and Native Americans. I also had the privilege of leading an adult Sunday-school class in studying my favorite book, Mere Christianity. In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy reading, especially biographies and spy thrillers. I play golf as often as I can, and like to ride bikes, hike, and cross-country ski. My Time at Houghton
Major: Religion. Minors: History and Literature. Favorite Professors: Professor Woolsey, Professor Kingdon Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Professor Woolsey had a very dry sense of humor that sometimes I think I was the only one in class to get. He would say something and I’d start laughing and no one around me seemed to think it was funny, but Professor Woolsey would have just the slightest smile on his face. To this day, I still remember the communion sermon Professor Kingdon gave, asking us to look into the reflection of the cup and see our sins being removed by the blood of Christ. I can’t underestimate the importance of the Houghton experience upon my life. Not having been raised in a Christian home and only becoming a Christian a couple years before arriving, I learned what it is to be a Christ follower during my time at school. It provided a tremendous foundation for my faith and shaped my world view that has been my guiding force ever since. I also learned how Christians can have fun (I may have spent way too much time on that) and still be a believer. Houghton exposed me to subjects I had never encountered, and provided opportunities to grow in my faith that I don’t think I could have gotten anywhere else. I made lifelong friends and created memories that I will always remember fondly. The gift God gave me of attending Houghton will always remain, apart from his saving grace, the greatest gift I could have received. To all of my Houghton friends and especially the Class of ’77, thanks for being part of my life.

Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Christian Student Outreach and “Craig Colony,” participating in the life of CSO, was instrumental in the Lord’s direction and my deciding to attend seminary and becoming a pastor (37 years now). Attended Ashland Theological Seminary, majoring in Pastoral Counseling and Psychology. Becoming a pastor was a “process”—but it was the “Lord’s process” that unfolded for several years. My interests grew in Christian Formation and Spiritual Direction, which took me for further training and eventually a DMin (Spiritual Direction and Small Group Ministries). In addition to the local church, I have directed several spiritual life ministries as a retreat leader with the NY Annual Conference and The Upper Room. In 1980, I was appointed to my first church as a UM pastor in the Catskills of NY, and then in 1984 to the Bridgehampton UMC. I then continued serving in CT for six years, until returning to the north shore of Long Island, serving for 13 years in Bayville. In 2012, I was appointed to the UM Church in Amityville and Lindenhurst, taking me home to the South Shore of Long Island. With the kids settling into careers and new lives, I’m thinking of the “retired life” in my family homes on Willoughby Lake in VT, and on the ocean in Point Lookout, NY.

It is a sending church having some forty-plus families from the congregation serving in missions at various places around the world and in the US. We’re blessed through them to have a view of what the Lord is doing around the world and in getting our faith challenged at many levels. For anyone interested in immersion in the topic of justice see, Dr. Chet Wood’s Sunday Classes <http://www.inpathsofrighteousness.org>. My Time at Houghton Major: Biology. Minor: Math. Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: I will always remember my cue to fall asleep in chapel: When Rick’s head went back (like Peppermint Patty’s), it was my cue to lean forward. I never got my hair cut during school semesters but, sadly, never achieved the level of Afro perfection that Tom H. had. I have not had much contact with our classmates over the years but have great memories of those days and would like to say thanks many classmates for their friendship and kindness to me during those years, which at the time for some of us Science majors, seemed pretty long. We’re not very social-media savvy but we’ve seen and responded to some of Keith A. and Tom C.’s posts. Basketball and running were releases for me, and I have to thank Scott and Jeff for letting me play on the team and thank Jim, Dennis, et al., for providing those epic court battles.

Service/Church Involvement: Geneva Christian Fellowship in the elderly ministry, the children’s ministry, and administrative support. In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy reading, walking, rides with my husband and dog, and times with my family. My Time at Houghton Major: Business Administration. I walked (or should I say, I ran) away from God and everything related to my upbringing as soon as I graduated. I couldn’t live the legalistic, straight-and-narrow Christian life that I had been taught. For the next 25 years, I never stopped believing that God existed, but I had no relationship with HIM. During this time, God watched over me and kept me safe. When I met my husband and started going to church with him, God spoke to me and told me HE loved me and chose me before I was born. On April 17, 2005, I chose life and have been serving my Lord ever since. Obviously, there are a few other highlights, but nothing compares to my love of God.

Eventually, we met him for supper at one of the big, circular tables in the cafeteria and broke the news that he’d been pranked! One of us was under his mattress and pushed it up and down at the moment of the earthquake. He said that my “acting” convinced him it was a real earthquake, especially because he couldn’t imagine me not telling the truth (I was not yet a lawyer!). When I sprang out of my lower bunk (Loren Dill was in the upper bunk), I hit my back against the steel bar holding the upper mattress. So I truly was in pain as I talked about how my injuries from the earthquake. It’s unfortunate our class reunions come only twice a decade. Please visit us if you plan to be near Spencerport, New York (near Rochester): Vero Beach, Florida; or San Jose, California. Also, I work about ten minutes from the Buffalo airport, so please stop and visit if you’re passing through on your way to Houghton. When I think of highlights of recent years, nothing beats being with my grandson, Alex. I also enjoy traveling. Israel stands out as the most wonderful place I’ve ever visited, followed by Italy, Russia, India, Corinth, Ephesus, the Pyramids, and Athens (where I stood on the Acropolis and could see both the amphitheater where Socrates spoke and Mars Hill where Paul spoke).

Favorite Professors: Woolsey, Shultz, Reist Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: My favorite memory is truly how the Houghton experience was intensely formative to my faith and worldview. It is with me today in ways I can hardly express. Lucy and I just now celebrated our 40th anniversary. It has been 40 wonderful years of following God’s leading. It was in the past three years that I was called into the pastorate as a licensed local pastor in the United Methodist church. It followed a path that we could not have planned except for God’s leading. There is too much
to share here, but we spent 35 years in psychology, education, and education publishing, an area in which I still consult. Our travels took us from Houghton; to Alfred; to Wheaton, Illinois; Phoenix, Arizona; and finally to settle in Oklahoma in 2000. In that time, I served as a school psychologist, clinical psychologist, school administrator, electronic learning designer, and university professor. I guess I have always known since Houghton days that I would one day serve as a staff member at a church. Little did I know that it would take 38 years after Houghton to get me trained. What an honor, now, to serve as an appointed pastor here in rural Oklahoma. We have two sons we are blessed to have in Oklahoma City. One is a major in the Air Force Reserves and other works in online learning technical support.
