QUE PASA 45th REUNION AUGUST 5-7, 2022
Al Presher
21 Birling Gap, Fairport, NY 14450; home: 585-223-5427, cell: 585-317-5802 Email: Email: apresher@rochester.rr.com On Facebook, LinkedIn Family Update: I’ve been married to Dorothy Paul Presher (Wheaton College, Class of ’77) for 42 years. Our daughter, Katharine Carlson, met her husband Brian at Gordon College, and lives in the Boston area. They have our three grandchildren. Our son, also a Brian, works in Washington, DC. Education after Houghton: Syracuse Newhouse School, MA in Communication, with an emphasis in Magazine Journalism. Occupation Update: Dorothy retired from her position as a preschool teacher. I am still working both at the website development company I founded in 2002, and the industrial automation magazine I bought in 2020 (had been the editor since 2013). Service/Church Involvement: Through the years, I have been an adult Sunday school teacher and class leader, and served on various committees at Browncroft Community Church, just outside of Rochester, NY. I worked as a Christian Service Brigade leader, and spent eight years as a senior-high-youth leader. Adult youth leaders at our church are encouraged to stay with a single class throughout their high-school years, so I went through the cycle twice. As part of that, I had the privilege to go on eight short-term summer mission trips with the youth—several working with major inner-city ministries and also international trips to Mexico City, Jamaica, and St. Vincent. In My Spare Time . . . Dorothy and I enjoy our cottage on Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes where we plan to retire. Most any warm weekend, I’m there hiking or enjoying the water. I love kayaking, fishing, and sailing. My Time at Houghton: Majors: Writing (non-fiction) and English Literature. Minor: Philosophy. Favorite Professors: Jim and Nancy Barcus Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: The Society for Nocturnal Morality. Looking back now, I realize how much I learned about the Body of Christ and how it should operate, primarily from my experiences with our Houghton ’77 class. Far too many adults, even in the church, may not have a significant network of friends that they relate well with and that they feel understand them. Even after 40 years, I’m sure that, as a group, we can to a great extent “pick-up where we left off” because of our shared experience and faith. Our journeys have been different but I’m looking forward to renewing relationships and hearing what has been happening collectively with the Houghton Class of ’77.
NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: Since the last reunion, we gained two grandchildren (Wesley Allen Carlson, age 4, and Penn Carlson, almost 1). Our daughter’s family also relocated from Boston to the Rochester area, so we get to see them all the time. A prouder Pop Pop I could not be! We also gained a lovely daughter-in-law, Jessica Walker Presher, last year. She and our son Brian are living in the Washington, DC area. The only other news I can think of is that we are continuing to transition to life in the Finger Lakes (Seneca Lake just south of Geneva, NY). Hopefully that transition to full-time living on the lake will be a reality in the next 12 months.
Barb (Mortensen) Syvertson
17 E Welty Avenue, Dillsburg, Pennsylvania 17019; (717) 645-5794 Email: Barbsyvertson@gmail.com Family Update: Ed and I enjoy our life in central Pennsylvania. Our three sons are married with families. We are crazy about our 7 grandchildren. (3-12 yrs old) They bring so much joy and give us opportunities for second chances: having more patience, more wisdom, more money and more of a big picture approach than we probably had as parents. God is so good. Occupation Update: I’m retired from Messiah College where I worked in the library. Ed still works for the navy, now from home. I occasionally substitute as a classroom Aide in our school district. I also take on other part time jobs when the spirit moves and opportunities present themselves. Service/Church Involvement: Over the years I’ve worked in paid and volunteer positions at our church, primarily in children’s ministry and women’s ministry. I’ve also mentored (with my friend) 4 girls who might be considered “at risk” . We’ve done it since they were in 5th Grade and they are now 20! It has been a great experience for me . . . taught me so much and opened my eyes to so many things. I realize in answering this question that I haven’t really been very active in ministry since COVID began—something I need to change! In My Spare Time . . . Playing with grandkids Art with grandkids Watching grandkids play sports and dance Having the kids/grandkids for dinner Baking bread, sewing with who else? Grandkids! See the trend?? OK, I also like to thrift, quilt, collage art, make and bind books, paint. And I have the best friends . . . and enjoy time with them. Love to travel (as in drive) all over with my husband. Love to read. Love to walk/hike if it’s not too steep. We enjoy our time in the Adirondacks each summer. Still want to ride in a boat down the Erie Canal, go to Norway, and visit Maine.

Favorite Professor: Warren Woolsey Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: It’s hard to focus on one. Friendships, sports, and learning experiences all come to mind. Some life highlights since graduating center for me on the blessings of the Lord Jesus in the continuing adventure of our family (through hard and joyous times), and in our years of ministry, including our work with Alliance missionaries, and our pastoral ministry in the local church. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: Since the last reunion we have added two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren to our family! We have walked through the fire with our son in two custody battles. We have shepherded our church family through the pandemic. P.O. Box 505, 26 Freeport Ave, Point Lookout, NY 11569; (516) 754-3691 Email: bobcleibold@gmail.com On Facebook, Google+, YouTube Education after Houghton: Ashland Theological Seminary MDiv 1980, DMin 1997 (Spiritual Direction and Small Group Ministries); The Upper Room Academy for Spiritual Formation 1989; Shalem Institute 1991. My Time at Houghton Major: Psychology. Minors: Sociology and Bible. Favorite Professor: Chaplain Richard Bareiss Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Christian Student Outreach and “Craig Colony,” participating in the life of CSO, was instrumental in the Lord’s direction and my deciding to attend seminary and becoming a pastor. Attended Ashland Theological Seminary, majoring in Pastoral Counseling and Psychology. Becoming a pastor was a “process”—but it was the “Lord’s process” that unfolded for several years. My interests grew in Christian Formation and Spiritual Direction, which took me for further training and eventually a DMin (Spiritual Direction and Small Group Ministries). In addition to the local church, I have directed several spiritual life ministries as a retreat leader with the NY Annual Conference and The Upper Room. In 1980, I was appointed to my first church as a UM pastor in the Catskills of NY, and then in 1984 to the Bridgehampton UMC. I then continued serving in CT for six years, until returning to the North Shore of Long Island, serving for 13 years in Bayville. In 2012, I was appointed to the UM Church in Amityville and Lindenhurst, taking me home to the South Shore of Long Island. Family Update: My son, John, has just returned to the U.S. after five years teaching English in South Korea. My daughter, Mary, studied at Emory University (Atlanta, GA) to be a nurse practitioner, and graduated in the midst of COVID. She was hired right away by Duke University Hospital as a nurse. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: At 66, "Senior Panic" takes on a different meaning as I re-discover who "Just Bob" is, following 41 years as "Pastor Bob" in the United Methodist Church, I retired from pastoring the UM Church in Amityville and Lindenhurst. The road I travel is without my wife of 37 years, Ilse, who died on February 17 due to complications due to COVID. I do enjoy life sailing on the ocean in Point Lookout (Long Island) and on Lake Willoughby in Westmore, Vermont. I’m attempting to fully retire, but in June, 2021, the Westmore Community Church took me on as their part-time pastor. Continuing to serve the church has been an important part of my grieving. I enjoy time with friends and look forward to our 45th Reunion.

Christine (Tina) Hoffer (known as Tina Webber at Houghton) 1920 Stockton Walk Lane, Snellville, GA 30078, 770-490-2926 Email: singingt@yahoo.com On Facebook (Tina Marie)
Family Update: Married to Mike Hoffer on February 15, 1997. Foster parents from 2014-2017. We hosted 10 children during that time, not all at once, and are still in touch with 2. Education after Houghton: BS Nursing from Emory University in 1978; Master’s of Nursing in Neonatal/Perinatal from Emory University in 1987; Certified as Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner in 1987; McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University from 2002-2003 (2 Greek classes, 1 Hebrew). Perspectives on the World Christian Movement; School of Music Ministry (6 weeks); Freedom in Christ training; Sozo training; YWAM Crossroads Discipleship Training School and Outreach. Occupation Update: Retired. Worked 33 years as an RN, mostly in NICU. Service/Church Involvement: Grace Fellowship Church in Snellville, Community Bible Study (CBS) leader, Neighborhood Bible Study leader, 2 singing groups In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy gardening and hiking. My Time at Houghton Major: Music. Minor: Bible. Favorite Professors: Dr. Bailey and Mr. Jacobson Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: My dorm for my freshman year was East Hall and I was placed on the 4th Floor Old Wing. We called ourselves the 4th Oldies. We were all so different, but we had such a great time on that floor. Linda Vandenburg was our RA. Some of the great belly laughs of my life were on that floor that year. There were pranks and laughter, but there were also times of prayer. It was amazing. After three years at Houghton, I transferred to nursing school at Emory, so when I graduated from Emory, I was able to obtain a degree from Houghton in absentia. For 33 years I have worked as a nurse in a cardiac unit, public health, overseas public health with refugees, but mostly neonatal care. At the same time, I continued to serve in music ministry in my church, in choirs and then worship teams, singing and playing my flute. I took two medical mission trips and was worn out by them. Then I took several mission trips which involved prayer and doing worship concerts and found my niche. Mike and I married when I was 41; a song he used to sing to me during that time was “Broken Road” by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. And so it was, as we had both been through some major disappointments. Much of our focus has been with Mike’s work as a caseworker
resettling refugees through World Relief. We also had a time of about eight years of caring for aging parents. I also ran for a public office in 2012, for state house representative for our district and lost. (But it was a GREAT experience.) Since becoming foster parents, much of my focus has had to be on the multiple needs of the children we receive. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: My husband has had some health issues, which are currently resolved. We have lost 2 nephews since 2018.
Chris Canfield
50 VanBuren Drive Fulton, NY 13069; 315-598-6627 Email: chriscanfield@earthlink.net Family Update: I’m married to Windy (Debbie) McKay 1976. Education after Houghton: MBA from College of William and Mary 1982. Occupation Update: Manager at Canfield Machine and Tool LLC. Service/Church Involvement: On the admin council. In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy spending time with family, reading, traveling and working on projects around the house. My Time at Houghton Major: Business Administration. Minor: Economics. Favorite Professors: Warren Woolsey and Arnold Cook. Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: I’ll start with a serious memory. In 1975, being part of the torchlight procession welcoming John and Carolyn Miller back from 8 months captivity in Vietnam is a wonderful memory for me. In 2003, while Windy was teaching an auditing course for Houghton in Thailand, we spent an evening at the Miller’s home and they told us how special that torchlight night was for them. My favorite course in college was Modern Missions with Professor Woolsey. In the 45 years since graduation God has given Windy and me some great opportunities to see how “modern missions” is changing. Twenty-seven years ago, Windy began doing Internal Audits for Wycliffe, as a volunteer, usually once but sometimes two or three times a year. After the first several years, I started assisting her on most of the audits, and I thank God for the privilege this has been. We’ve seen how God is working in many countries to get the Bible translated into languages that don’t have it. In 2015, we crossed paths in Kenya with classmates Paul and Kyle Kroening. Their many years committed to serving God with Wycliffe is inspiring and humbling. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: In 2018, we were able to spend time with Becky (Locke) and Steve Thorson (both class of 1976) when we did an audit in Nepal. It’s inspiring to see how God has used them in medical and theological work. Our experiences doing an audit in Bangladesh the following year helped us better understand why Tom Corson fell in love with the people of this country. We praise God for his dedication to serving Christ. (We’re sorry we weren’t able to see him while we were there.)

My Time at Houghton Major: Biology. Minor: Chemistry. Dave and Cindi Rudd 135 Nemier Rd, Lacona, NY 13083; (315) 387-5213 Email: dsrudd@frontier.com Family Update: Dave and Cindi Rudd have four grown sons, four lovely daughters–in–law, and 16 precious grandchildren. Education after Houghton: Cindi completed her Master’s Degree from Oswego State University. Dave is pretty sure that he has been through the school of hard knocks. Occupation Update: Dave milked his beloved herd of Holstein cows until May of 2020. At that time he needed a second hip replacement and did not have the help that he would need to continue in dairy farming. He now works with his son, Levi, raising beef cows. Cindi retired from teaching this past June. She had 31 years with Sandy Creek School System. For 27 of those years Cindi was an inclusion teacher in either second, third, or fourth grade. She never expected for Dave to retire first but is ready to see what the upcoming years have in store now that they are both retired. Service/Church Involvement: We serve a lovely, small, and outgoing community church in Pierrepont Manor, NY. We have been there 40 years. This has allowed us to see families grow in Christ and allowed us to be participants in baby dedications all the way to marriages of many of these children. Our church loves to see ways to reach out and offer the name of Christ to others. This could be done locally with good news clubs or by the collection of operation Christmas child boxes or by supporting missionaries as they are sent off to serve in other areas. In Our Spare Time . . . Dave loves to help others in our neighborhood. Cindi loves to garden and do some handcrafts, as well as read. They both love having the grandkids over to play and eat and make memories. Our Time at Houghton Majors and Minors: Dave majored in Bible and Christian Ed. Cindi majored in Elementary Ed. Both of these majors have served us well as we minister in our church and our community. Favorite Professor: We were so fortunate to have Chaplain Bareiss as a spiritual leader and mentor in many ways. Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Dave loves to recall how he tried to keep his little lamb quiet in his room so that many would come to the room that he shared with Don Thompson at their first open house. Cindi remembers the wonderful bond that all the girls of Gao had. We also both have fond memories of assigned seats at chapel and how Dave would talk Don Thompson into trading seats with him so that we could sit together. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: SINCE OUR LAST REUNION OUR SECOND SON HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH MELANOMA. HE HAS 4 PRECIOUS CHILDREN AGES 9, 7, 5 AND 3. CANCER HAS ITS UPS AND DOWNS. SOMETIMES WE HAVE MORE HOPE THAN OTHERS.

Occupation Update: Full-time Educational Consultant (July 2017—future) Service/Church Involvement: Missionary—Resourcing Christian Education International/Community Bible study and informal ministry in community In My Spare Time . . . Our children were born in Puerto Rico, and it became home to us. We have two children and nine grandchildren. Over the years, we have provided a home of security to a number of children and young people who became part of our family, as well. During most of our time in Puerto Rico I served as Director of the Wesleyan Academy there. Subsequently I directed another school in Puerto Rico, and then we returned to New York where I directed a small, K-8, Christian school, and we led the process of developing the high school. After leaving that school, I managed a housing program for homeless alcoholics and was a realtor for commercial properties. Then, for ten years we served as missionaries in Ecuador, where I directed the Alliance Academy International. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: For many years I consulted for international schools, primarily Christian schools in Latin America. Since leaving AAI, this has become my full-time job and ministry. We continue to live in Ecuador on a small ranch that is populated by Lois’s horses and an assortment of other animals. We enjoy the freedom our current ministry permits for us to spend time with our family in Massachusetts. wife for 38 years. Mother of four children and now nine grandchildren. Worked at headquarters of World Hope International in Washington, DC. Served in pregnancy care centers wherever we lived. Team player with my husband, serving in eight uniquely different Wesleyan churches, ranging from small to megachurch. Occupation Update: Retired pastor’s wife, Administrative Assistant, Women’s Ministry Director. Currently part-time Library Aide In My Spare Time . . . Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Loved playing varsity sports—VOLLEYBALL, basketball, softball, tennis. My grandmother lived in Houghton so I was able to visit her often while attending college. Maturing in my faith, giving God first place in my heart, getting engaged and then married between semesters of my senior year! Had the opportunity to come back and teach at Houghton, filling in teaching Adaptive Physical Education for a professor on sabbatical leave. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: Just celebrated 45 years of marriage. Husband retired after 38 years in eight Wesleyan churches and I assisted him along the way. Nine grandchildren ages 15– 5. 58 Cimarron Valley Circle, Little Rock, Arkansas; 501-960-7662 Email: r.campbell05@comcast.net On Facebook, LinkedIn Service/Church Involvement: Church Community Group, AR Kids Read, and various church and community service projects and organizations. In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy spending time with our children and granddaughter (and later this year, will be welcoming to more grandchildren), traveling, and reading. My Time at Houghton Major: Chemistry. Minor: Math. After graduating from Houghton, I moved to Washington, DC, and worked for two US Congressmen, including one from Arkansas, over the next four years. While I worked for a representative from Arkansas, an explosion occurred in a Titan Missile silo, and I traveled to Arkansas for the congressman. In Little Rock, I met Rick Campbell “and the rest is history.” I am thankful for God’s grace across my life. To dwell on His blessings in summarizing the 36 years of “history” after I met Rick, I have enjoyed and am thankful for: celebrating 35 years of marriage; parenting a son and daughter; adding a granddaughter (with whom we are completely smitten) to our family, and anticipating two more grandchildren due this year; serving in our church and
community; meeting new friends in new places; working for a governor; working for/retiring from a financial services and technology provider after 34 years; and discovering the gift of daily life and softer edges NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: When I retired in 2017, I planned to be more available to our “expanded and expanding” family, spend more time volunteering with our church and nonprofits, and to travel more freely. In 2020, our travel and volunteer work came to an abrupt halt with the arrival of COVID, but our availability to family took a quantum leap as our son and his family left their New York City apartment on two days’ notice, so he could work remotely from our house and have more indoor/outdoor space for a two-year-old and four-year-old. Four months later, their newborn daughter came home from the hospital and joined the crew at our house and remained our daily “visitors” until they moved to Houston, on June 11 of this year. The past two years have been a wonderful blessing for us and a true silver lining in a cloud. Once again, however, we’re “in transition,” and finding a new normal.

I still play guitar, bass, violin, etc. Education after Houghton: Masters from Eastern Seminary Occupation Update: I taught Bible at a Nazarene high school for four years. From there I have been in the IT arena, mainly with sales and marketing. Service/Church Involvement: We are active in our local Wesleyan Church. In My Spare Time . . . I still enjoy playing with various music groups, but lately there hasn't been a lot of opportunity for that, except church worship. My Time at Houghton Major: Bible. Minor: Christian Education Favorite Professors: Professor Woolsey, Professor Gould, Professor Schultz. Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: A cavalcade of memories for sure. I got married in the middle of my sophomore year. One of my first jobs there was pasteurizing milk. Education after Houghton: Master’s of Education from SUNY at Plattsburgh; Master’s level school administrator classes. Occupation Update: I have successfully retired a second time from a physical therapy office job. What an interesting experience through the COVID years! I was even trained to do the back of sinus nasal swabs. Now I am home most days, but still subbing at the school I taught at for so long. Service/Church Involvement: I teach the adult Sunday-school class for our church and serve on the Church Board currently. I am also active in the Missions International program at our church. Missions is a vital part of my make-up so I have gone on many short-term missions trips. We are currently making plans to go to Kenya this winter for about 2 weeks. In My Spare Time: I love to read, garden, and cook. When I take the time, I enjoy crocheting. Any time I can get to the beach, I am there! I also volunteer one day per week at the local food pantry and kitchen. My Time at Houghton Majors: Elementary Education and Social Sciences. Minor: History. Favorite Professor: Dr. Kay Lindley
Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: A fond memory is the ice storm we had during exam week. The power first went off when I was attending a concert in the chapel. With the curtains shut, the blackness was intense. The concert pianist kept us all calm and in place while entertaining us. I think the power was on and off for about three days. We were allowed to light candles in the dorm. Science students studied in the labs by Bunsen burner. Meals were served at random times when the kitchen had power to cook meals. We waited for an announcement that the dining hall was open. My first few years after leaving college were full of transition and moving around—kind of finding myself and where God wanted me to end up (probably like many of us). Eventually, God moved me to Connecticut and I have now been here for 36 years. I have taught at the same school for 34 years—The Cornerstone Christian School. This place has become my family, my church, and my community. Thinking about retiring is definitely bittersweet. About twenty years ago, I met my husband, Stephen. He brought joy and love into my life and showed me things about myself I never knew. It has certainly been an adventure figuring all this out over the years because Stephen does not have an “off” button. So, life is never dull. He is constantly thinking missionally. We love to go on missions trips in the summer, and we have a special heart for a little church in Ulyanich, Russia. We are planning a trip to Israel in the near future. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: Since our last reunion, I started (and retired from) a new job. I worked in a physical therapy office as the patient service representative and loved it. I enjoyed working with the patients and staff and trying to bring God’s light with me in our relationships. After retiring from the office I worked full-time with our contractor adding on to our home – the hardest job I have ever undertaken! We have also traveled more recently. We took a tour to Israel (if you haven’t gone – GO) and a long vacation in Hawaii. We have also had time to visit family and friends since the pandemic ended.

General Update: Since graduation, the Lord has blessed me beyond comprehension. My first job was working as an Editorial Assistant at a Christian magazine in Plainfield, NJ. I met my husband, Richard, and we were married in January 1979. Richard is a graduate of Northeastern Bible College in Essex Fells, NJ, and was working as a Chaplain at the Market Street Mission in Morristown, NJ. So right from the start, I was involved in full-time Christ-centered ministry, for which I’m very thankful! We moved into pastoral ministry in 1982. In 1987, our church embarked upon a wonderful project of helping to build a school in Santa Ana, El Salvador. My cousin and his family were career missionaries in Central America and through this endeavor and several trips to El Salvador, we were able to adopt our son, Michael. Mic loves the Lord and attended Arizona Christian University. He has since earned his MBA and now works for Sodexo, an international company based in France. His wife, Lily, was
an elementary teacher and now a full-time mom. Since they live in Arizona, we’re flying back and forth every couple of months to see them, as you can quite imagine! Through the years, we’ve served in home missions in church planting and foreign missions serving for 7 years in the Dutch West Indies, Costa Rica, and the Canary Islands of Spain. Returning to the States in 1997, my husband pastored an established church where I began teaching in their Christian school. That turned my life in a new direction, and I became a state certified teacher, teaching music, speech, and drama, later adding high school English, AP Lit and Public Speaking. We moved to Florida in 2002, and I continued teaching in Christian schools in Jacksonville. In 2008, my husband accepted a pastorate in Phoenix, AZ, and we moved out there where I continued teaching, one year in a charter school for at-risk high school students, which was definitely a learning experience for me. Through contacts in Phoenix, Richard accepted a position working at Jewish Voice Ministries, a missions organization which reaches out to the lost tribes of Israel around the world. They are currently focusing on bringing medical teams to Ethiopia and Zimbabwe where they share the Good News of Yeshua the Messiah. This is a fascinating ministry that has changed our focus in a wonderful way. I’m blessed to join Richard for many ministry trips, and we’re honored to be a part of this team. We moved back to our Florida home in 2011 where Richard now telecommutes,. Education after Houghton: Richard and I both completed a one-year Masters program in Latin American culture and linguistics while living and working in San Jose, Costa Rica. I also completed various professional development courses in education to maintain my teaching certification. Richard has far more post grad work under his belt and maintained his training as a certified alcoholic counselor, biblical counselor, as well as completing extensive theology and leadership courses at various seminaries and universities. Occupation Update: I worked with several Christian organizations including national religious broadcasters and Trans World Radio. However, I have really enjoyed teaching in primarily Christian schools since 1997. I have also always taught at least some piano students through the years. In 2002, I became affiliated with the Steinway Association and have maintained my certification with them. (www.teacher.steinway.com). Since 2012 I have been teaching private piano lessons full- time to more than 60 students on a weekly basis. Service/Church Involvement: I have been involved in Christian ministry since 1977. My primary involvement in church life was directing worship teams, church choirs and musical dramatic productions in both churches and Christian schools. As I mentioned, Richard and I have had the privilege of working in rescue mission, home missions, foreign missions, pastoring established churches, and now being involved in messianic ministry worldwide. I’ve been honored to serve in various capacities in each of these environments. Since leaving pastoral ministry, we have always been involved in our local church as much as possible. We currently attend River Rock Church in Nocatee, Florida. In My Spare Time . . . We're beach people and love living on the Florida coast. When living in Arizona, we grew to love exploring the mountains and took up hiking. In 1990, we began visiting national parks when itinerating to raise our foreign missions support. To date, we've visited over 150 national parks and sites around our country. We love traveling in general and don't hesitate to hop on a plane to somewhere whenever possible. We've had the privilege of visiting 47 states and 18 countries so far and hope to add to the number. Personally, I enjoy anything
on the water (although I’m not as much of a water skiier as I used to be!). I also enjoy needlework and have completed over 60 tapestries in our travels. However, mentoring young people, particularly high school students, has been very close to my heart. Through the years, I have had the privilege of working with students on many levels, and am always honored and amazed to be a part of their lives as they seek to follow God's calling. My Time at Houghton Majors: Although I started out as a music major at Houghton, Roger Rozendal introduced me to the idea of majoring in communications during the Winterim of 1974. So I’m glad I broadened out my majors to communications and music. Both majors have served me well through the years as I've worked in education and music ministry. Favorite Professors:I very much enjoyed singing under the direction of Donald Bailey. Roger Rozendal was also an inspiration to me. Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: I loved the environment of the Houghton Community. Autumns were beautiful and winters were fun. Houghton years were actually quite difficult for me on a personal level. My father passed away unexpectedly our freshman year, and I had a difficult time adjusting. I questioned a lot of things regarding God's purpose in taking him so prematurely, in my opinion. It was a time of rebellion for me and definitely a time of growing. I had enough spirituality and prayer surrounding me, which kept me, protected from diverting too far from the Lord.

Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Playing tricks on Calvin Wilcox in our freshman year. Rooming with the fabulous Lori Mulligan in our senior year. And creating a design for a backdrop in the Wesley Chapel for Dr. Chamberlain’s installation as President. When I look back on these 40 years post-Houghton, I’m so glad I was able to begin my adult life with an excellent education and a firm spiritual foundation. Here’s what I’m most pleased to have accomplished: 1—Being able to build and maintain a strong Christian marriage that’s been blessed with two wonderful children who are well put together and happily married. 2—Being able to learn book design, earn a living with it, and stay current in it. 3— Being able to make a fulfilling life in a small town in South Jersey after having lived in New York City and North Jersey. News Since Our Last Reunion. I was laid off from my book design job right as the COVID pandemic began. The layoff was independent of the pandemic but it was still hard. Happily, I’m rebounding and finding there are many joys in life beyond being employed full-time.

Our two children are married, with Spencer living in San Diego and Amanda living in Oklahoma City with her husband and world-class grandchild, James, who is four and a half. I migrated out of law practice into nonprofit leadership in 2010, after coming in second in a state-wide race for Attorney General. I currently serve as president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Central Oklahoma, whose mission is to help people overcome challenges to employment. I teach a Sunday-school class, write columns for local newspapers, and try to be a World-Class Papa to James. I recently completed a 135-mile hike on the Camino de Santiago in April, and it was a rich and spiritually rewarding experience. I also meet monthly with an Ignatian spiritual director, attempting to faithfully hike the pilgrimage of life and explore the mystery of God. Diane was involuntarily retired when her hospital shut down their outpatient diabetes education program. She wakes up with a hymn on her lips every morning and finds ways to minister to others, especially women who have lost their husbands. Education after Houghton: Law School at Syracuse. Coming from a fractured family as I do, I feel it’s important to understand that there are many ways to configure a family besides the traditional “Leave It to Beaver,” “The Waltons,” or “The Cosby Show” models we were delivered on popular TV. “Friends” continue to be the backbone of my personal support, and friends continue to show me, and teach me in remarkable ways about what I know of Gods’ affectionate, abundant, and unmovable love for me. Education Update: MA in Student Personnel from Buffalo State University; MA in Rhetoric and Composition from Oregon State University; PhD in English and Composition from Washington State University. Occupation Update: In June of 2022, I retired after more than 20 years as Assistant professor of English at Clarion University in Clarion, PA. Now every morning I pray, “Lord, open me up like a flower to embrace all the possibilities of this new day with You!” Since retirement is still new, I just want to “be still,” and breathe right now, and find my new life rhythm, which I know will include fostering meaningful relationships as I serve the local community through the food bag ministry at my church, working on behalf of homeless animals, and pursuing my love of writing. I am also interested in training to be a hospice volunteer, and in general want to find useful ways to invest or “donate” my time. Service/Church Involvement: Hmmmm. . . I am not sure that sitting in a church, listening to a “sermon” feeds me spiritually anymore. There are many ways to hear and listen to the voice of God. I do understand the value of “worship” and of worshiping with others; I believe prayer is integral to knowing God more intimately, but I’ve felt disappointed and even ashamed of “institutionalized” Christianity and its insistence on excluding “others;” then there were and continue to be all of those sex scandals that rocked the church; these days I discover Christ and God’s “still, small voice” in the Mother’s Day gift of 3 tiny, precious eggs, cupped in a hidden nest, that my dogs led me to in local PA gamelands, or working shoulder to shoulder with other believers as we pack and hand out food items to people who need help; I hear the voice of God in quiet conversations with friends and loved ones who are self-disclosing about where they are struggling with their faith. I don’t understand pain and suffering (for instance, why innocent people and children in Ukraine have to suffer and die because Putin thirsts for power), but I know that somehow God is there in the midst of pain and suffering, that God wants us to help, wants us to listen, to really listen, to other peoples’ stories, and I am grateful to God for every pulse of joy and wonder I feel. In My Spare Time . . . I still enjoy spending time with friends, going for hikes or snowshoeing with or without my dogs, reading and writing; I count ZOOM as one of the blessings of the
pandemic, which allowed me to participate in several creative writing workshops sponsored by Orion magazine, and which continues to enrich me as I participate in recurring, online writing groups, making new friends and refreshing my experience of community. My Time at Houghton Major: English. Minor: biology. Favorite Professors: Leax, Jake, Dr. Whiting, Dr. Cook Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: I always loved the Christmas, candlelight procession in East Hall, which started on 4th Main and wove its way to the first floor lobby, adding women from each floor along the way as we lit each other’s candles and added our voices to whatever Christmas carol was being sung; I remember those voices ringing in the stair well as I stood outside my dorm room waiting for the line to burst open the stairwell door, waiting for someone to light my candle as I too stepped into that tide of joy; later as we sat with our living areas in the East Hall lobby, we were surprised with Christmas presents from home; that was a tradition I loved leading when I became an RD in East Hall, and it was a tradition I carried with me to the young women in the Women’s Hall at Letourneau College in Longview, TX. I remember the day after the carols, using a hot iron and pieces of a brown, paper grocery bag to melt and absorb the candle wax that had dripped all over the carpeting during our bountiful celebration. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: My “new” news is my retirement from Clarion University, and my desire to live abundantly, trying to share God’s loving kindness, as often as I can, with as many people and living creatures as I can, as authentically as I can, even when I am feeling shy, until God calls me home.

Also the great singing; I don’t remember being anywhere since with so many people singing hymns with as much gusto as at Houghton. I think most fondly of the everyday stuff with some of the truly best people I could have spent my college years with. I’m very grateful for it all. My Time at Houghton Major: Chemistry. Minors: Biology and Mathematics. Service/Church Involvement: I have been active in Toastmasters (Tagline: Where Leaders Are Made) and Rotary (Motto: Serve to Change Lives). Since the pandemic hit in 2020, both of those have for the most part been virtual activities. In addition, I have been a mentor to a Congolese, who immigrated to Cleveland in 2011, and those of his family who immigrated in 2015. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: I continue being a mentor to the medical doctor from the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2018 we established a nonprofit in the DRC with the goal of helping women in the country. It struggled before the pandemic hit, and the pandemic has
made its survival more difficult. The medical doctor and his four children, who immigrated in 2015, continue their efforts to get the rest of their family, including his wife and two grandchildren, to the USA. In 2021, after my wife retired from teaching, we moved to Cincinnati, OH, to be near children and grandchildren. Because the pandemic was going strong, we attended our church back in Cleveland online for several months. Late in 2021 we began attending the church of my younger son and his family in person. We continue to slowly build new friendships here in Cincinnati while continuing connections to church friends back in Cleveland via Zoom.
Lori Mulligan Davis (the diploma says Lorraine)
0N093 Nepil Ave, Wheaton, IL 60187; 630-363-9289 cell/text lorimulligandavis@gmail.com On Facebook, Goodreads Family Update: We used to call our daughter LoriOnlyMoreSo, but now we call me AnnieOnlyLessSo. Anne lives in Colorado Springs with God’s gift to us—our son-in-law, Ben. Our son, Mark, is a font designer/graphic designer living in Brooklyn. Where he inherited his unerring fashion sense, I have no idea. “He makes me laugh every day” best describes my Wheatie husband, Scott. We’re living out the plaque in our downstairs bathroom: “Grow old along with me, The best is yet to be, The last of life For with the first was made” (Browning). Education after Houghton: Right after Houghton, I did summer school at Oxford studying Shakespeare and then went to William and Mary for grad school in English . . . and for the free pass to Colonial Williamsburg. But I take being an English Major as a life pursuit. Besides Shakespeare, my other passion has become Jane Austen (someone never mentioned at Houghton College!). I’m a Life Member of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA). My beloved Houghton roommate Holly Reid McLaughlin and I rendezvous somewhere in the North America every year for the JASNA Annual General Meeting. This year we’re going to Vancouver, British Columbia! Occupation Update: Projects in progress as a book coach and freelance editor are a textbook on Jane Austen’s Christianity by Brenda Cox, and the sequel to BRAT and the Kids of Warriors with Michael Joseph Lyons. A few years back, my husband stole my computer and typeset/designed/printed one copy of my own novel, complete with ISBN number. I plan to polish it up to fulfill a life goal of seeing my own novel on the shelves of the Malverne High School Library. Next year is fifty years since we graduated high school, so now I have a deadline! Service/Church Involvement: Though at present I’m not leading a club, Pioneer Girls continues to be my heart ministry. During the pandemic, I donated time helping the national ministry, Pioneer Clubs, create Zoom scripts to help churches continue virtually. Then I donated a few months writing new curriculum. I like to volunteering a week at Pioneer Girls camp each summer. I co-lead a monthly Christian arts group. Currently we meet online. You’re invited! In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy just about anything you can label “literary”: literary audiobooks, literary dancing, literary decorating, literary crafts, literary tourism, literary clothing, literary
cooking, literary Facebook groups, literary conferences. And stories performed on stage; before COVID disrupted theaters, I saw 76 plays and ballets in a single year. My Time at Houghton Majors: English and Writing. Minors: French and Bible. Favorite Professors: Jack Leax, Nancy Barcus, James Barcus, Paul Johnson, Lionel Basney, Warren Woolsey A favorite memory I shared in my Houghton One Day Of Giving letter: Mrs. Barcus trying to button my coat one frigid day, before throwing her hands up in despair because there were NO BUTTONS LEFT on my coat. Years later, I found myself wearing another coat with every button AWOL. I sewed on eight crazily mismatched buttons in honor of her. When I traveled to Waco, TX, to see Dr. Barcus a few years before he died, he reveled in my stories of Mrs. Barcus’s loving care! NEWS Since Our Lasts Reunion: I had my midlife crisis when I left age 22 behind. My favorite Mary Stewart heroines were 22 and my study at Oxford was over. However, this January I realized my golden year of 22 was not an AGE, but a YEAR. In 2022 I acted as Austen advisor for Paul Gordon’s musical of Sense and Sensibility at Harper College in Chicagoland and was a plenary speaker on Shakespeare and Austen for the Jane Austen Summer Program of University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, a prestigious Austen conference. For the likes of Lori, it can’t get much better than that!

Service/Church Involvement: I am the Sunday-School Coordinator for our church and Kitchen Use Coordinator. My Time at Houghton and Favorite Professors: Dr. Woolsey, Drs. Irmgard and David Howard, Dr. Bailey, and Dr. Moody. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: We are attending this year if my cardiac issues stay stable. Since the last reunion, I have gone through breast cancer treatment with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. I am now 4 years free of cancer. My mom passed away after an eleven-year battle with dementia in December of 2020. Just this week, I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. A new item to add to my health list. We adopted two Siamese cats a year ago. They are our constant companions in fun and entertainment. We joined the camping set with our first travel trailer a year ago. My husband is an avid photographer of stars, galaxies and whatever is interesting in the night sky. We load up the camper with our cats and his equipment, we go to where the sky is clear and dark. Our oldest granddaughter turned 16 is learning how to drive. Our 6 year old granddaughter has a heart for the Lord. She told her mom
she needed to go to Sunday School every day, not just Sunday. Her excitement to know more about the Lord is so heartwarming.
Melissa (Missy Wehner) Holley
17221 Royal Drive, Lebanon, Missouri 65536; (585) 969-1108 Email: holleyhouse1988@gmail.com Family Update: After having lived my whole life in Western New York, I retired from teaching in 2011 and moved to Lebanon, Missouri, in September of 2011. My husband had always dreamed of owning a dairy farm and so we took the plunge and became dairy farmers. We had been looking all over the country for several years, and God planted us in Missouri. We were blessed that our children moved with us. I have to say that these last ten years have been the best and worst of my life. Owning your own business is difficult, but owning a dairy farm is really difficult, especially when you start this journey in your late fifties! We sold our dairy cows in 2017 and then we transitioned to beef cattle. My husband had some health issues (back surgery and a hip replacement) so we sold our beef cattle in December of 2020. We hope to raise beef cattle again, but my husband is still recovering from his health issues so that decision is in God’s hands. I have learned and grown so much from this experience. I am so thankful for all of the difficulties of these past ten years! Growth and dependence on God only come through difficulties, and my walk with Jesus has only deepened because of this experience! There were times when I felt like I was living the Book of Job, and all I can say about that is that I am thankful!! I was hoping to make it to this reunion, because I haven’t made it to any since we moved, but we are now walking with my daughter through her cancer journey. She was diagnosed with Large B Cell Lymphoma at the end of May. The prognosis is very good, but the journey is hard! I am so thankful for all of you and your examples of living for Christ!! I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t attended Houghton! Education after Houghton: Masters in Reading Education from Elmira College Occupation Update: Retired from teaching in 2011 Service/Church Involvement: I serve in the children’s ministry and lead a woman’s Bible study. In My Spare Time . . . I have taken up quilting with a few ladies from my church. HOUGHTON MEMORIES: Majors and Minors: Elementary Ed/Psychology Favorite Professor: Professor Warren Woolsey

Many found us an odd group but, for us, we were a real community within the wider Houghton community and developed a bond of love for each other that was really important for us. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: Our life is now part of a four-generation family of seven living on a small 20-acre farm. We are: my mom-in-law, Ginny & me, our daughter & son-in-law, and two grandkids (9-year-old grandson & infant granddaughter). Ginny has been retired from teaching since 2014 and is home taking care of her mom and the grandkids, including home/cyber schooling our (going to be) fourth-grader grandson. I’m likely going to stay active in full-time pastoral ministry till the end of 2023 but will undoubtedly keep busy with part-time ministry & supply preaching after formal retirement.

Forty-five years! Unbelievable. The days were long but the years were short. Molly and I have three children, all three went to Houghton. Two of the three are married, and we have 6 grandsons. As Psalm 127 says, PJS version, our quiver is full of Spears. Twenty-three years ago, we intentionally moved back to the Houghton area to be near Molly’s dad and my mom. We are so glad we got/get to spend time with our parents in their twilight years. Molly’s dad passed away in 2007, but we had eight great years of very frequent connection. My mom now lives in an independent living facility in Rochester. We try to visit her once a week. We also have phone church with her each Sunday. My mom has been an integral part of our kids’ (and now
grandkids’) lives. In 2018 I retired as pastor of First Baptist Church of Franklinville. I am now working full-time at Franklinville Central School. This is the fulfillment of my dream as a freshman at Houghton, being an influence for Christ in a public school. I also preach every Sunday at Farmersville Center Community Church. Molly has paid a high price for my calling; being a pastor’s wife is not what she signed up for. Through shattered dreams, dark nights of the soul, and plenty of grace and mercy, we are still climbing the upward calling together.

Our daughter, Sarah, married her high-school sweetheart in 2016 and lives in the Chicago area. We have a 3-year-old grandson and another one on the way this fall. We moved to Arkansas in 2018. This move means we have lived in 8 different homes, in 5 different states, 2 of them multiple times. Education after Houghton: After graduating from Houghton, I completed an MS in Information Technology in 2010. I also obtained several technical and professional certifications, including a PMP (Project Management Professional) certification in 2007 and a CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) in 2008. I continued to take professional training courses to update my skills. I’ve used my training and experience to teach at the college level and to volunteer to help others prepare for certification.
Occupation Update: In 2021 I retired after 41 years as an IT professional. Over the years I had been a programmer, a systems engineer and consultant, an IT manager, and a project and program manager. I worked for 8 different companies starting with IBM and ending with a subsidiary of Dell computers Service/Church Involvement: My wife and I have always been active in our local church. We’ve taught kids’ Sunday school (elementary and junior high), led Bible studies in our home, and I have always been involved in Men’s ministry activities wherever we attended. We also participated in short-term mission projects and led a team of high schoolers on a two-week trip to Alaska to direct a vacation Bible school for Native American kids. From 1997-1998, we were short-term missionaries in Alaska, working at the Alaska Bible College setting up a campus computer system. While there, we also participated in local ministries with students and Native Americans. I have also had the privilege of leading an adult Sunday-school class in a study of my favorite book, Mere Christianity. Since moving to Arkansas I have been part of the board of directors for our local congregation. In My Spare Time . . . I enjoy reading, especially biographies and spy thrillers. I play golf as often as I can, and like to ride bikes, hike, and cross-country ski although I don’t get much opportunity in Arkansas. My Time at Houghton Major: Religion. Minors: History and Literature. Favorite Professors: Professor Woolsey, Professor Kingdon Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: Professor Woolsey had a very dry sense of humor that sometimes I think I was the only one in class to get. He would say something and I’d start laughing and no one around me seemed to think it was funny, but Professor Woolsey would have just the slightest smile on his face. To this day, I still remember the communion sermon Professor Kingdon gave, asking us to look into the reflection of the cup and see our sins being removed by the blood of Christ. I can’t underestimate the importance of the Houghton experience upon my life. Not having been raised in a Christian home and only becoming a Christian a couple years before arriving, I learned what it is to be a Christ follower during my time at school. It provided a tremendous foundation for my faith and shaped my world view that has been my guiding force ever since. I also learned how Christians can have fun (I may have spent way too much time on that) and still be a believer. Houghton exposed me to subjects I had never encountered, and provided opportunities to grow in my faith that I don’t think I could have gotten anywhere else. I made lifelong friends and created memories that I will always remember fondly. The gift God gave me of attending Houghton will always remain, apart from his saving grace, the greatest gift I could have received. To all of my Houghton friends and especially the Class of ’77, thanks for being part of my life. Looking back five years later at what I wrote above, I still agree that my time at Houghton has shaped my whole life. Unlike many, maybe most of my Houghton classmates, I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life when I came to Houghton, and throughout my life, I haven’t spent a great deal of time planning my future. As opportunities presented themselves, I’ve either gone for them or not. That has led me on some interesting journeys. During school I ended up stuffing dirty clothes in a pillowcase and challenging girls to a thumping and wore tights and wigs. After Houghton I moved to Chicago where I eventually
found my wife. I quit my job to become a missionary in Alaska and moved around the country. In most of it (Glee Club and thumping aside) I have seen the Lord’s hand on my life, using my strengths and my weaknesses in ways I could not have dreamed of. It’s been a wild ride that all started all those years ago with all of you. Thanks again and always.

We shared interesting academic and other experiences as people of African descent in a very Eurocentric environment. NEWS Since Our Last Reunion: I continue to live well because my life is golden. Despite a global pandemic, rising racial tensions and the continuous upheavals in this nation where violence is a perfectly acceptable means to obtain power, I remain prayerful and hopeful. My daughter, Diamond, who attended the last reunion with me, is now a HS grad with her sights set on Syracuse University (I could not convince her that HC was the place to go!). My daughter Jasmin is headed full steam ahead with her Sneaker Ball themed Sweet 16 party. And my son, Jordan, who gives me a run for my money, is entering his teen years (although I think he’s been in puberty for the past 5 years). The church I serve, Safe Haven UCC, expanded ministries during the time of sheltering in place and continues to serve God through hybrid gatherings to keep us connected to God and with one another. My nonprofit organization, JasD’Jor: Emerging Philanthropist has recently launched an empowerment program for young girls called PORTALS 2 POWER, a program built upon the 8 dimensions of wellness. I am currently in training to become a facilitator in SACRED CONVERSATIONS 2 END RACISM. I am working on the decolonization of people of African Descendants of American Enslavement. I am so fulfilled, having lived long enough to embrace Paul’s words to the church at Rome: ALL THINGS WORK TOGETHER FOR THE GOOD. . . . I have loved, lost, and follow these three life-learned lessons: To trust God completely, to love myself unconditionally, and to never worry about anything (Be anxious for nothing!). So, I can love others and do what my mama taught me and my eight brothers and sisters, TO KEEP ON KEEPIN’ ON! As my ancestors would say, “I Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey!” I’m loving the journey all the way!

I am still doing trainings with counselors, executive coaches, and leaders. For the last seven years I have worked with Dr. Townsend (the Boundaries guy) as we co-founded a graduate school (Townsend Institute for Leadership and Counseling at Concordia University Irvine) in 2015. We were pleasantly surprised how successful that was, and it was well over 600 students by the time I left. But I have gotten my life back. My wife, Carrie, was correct—I put way too much into this. So it has been great to have more time for her, my three grown children (Aaron, Joel, and Rachel) and seven grandkids (Noelle, Dylan, Gabrielle, Haley, Christabelle, Garrett and Charli, ages 3 to 13). I still love going to sprint car races on dirt tracks in Indiana and am the only geek in the stands that reads a book (with marker in hand) in between races and during the crashes. I love creating adventures for the gkids and have a back yard full of fun stuff: zip line, huge swing set, slacker line, go cart, electric scooters to ride around the tennis court, two tree houses, trampoline, huge blow-up dart game and Connect 4, big rolling inflatable, stairway to heaven (logs stacked on each other creating steps up to a third fort, swing tree (5 different kinds of swings), corn hole, bocce ball, miniature bowling pins, trampoline (until the storm destroyed it), portable hot tub, slip-n-slide/sprinkler area for kids to run through, large parachute, air blown pop up tent, walkie talkies, hand drones, kites, miniature hay rides, tons of dress up clothes (including all the princesses of Disney and superheroes, with capes), large checker board, Lord of the Rings chess set, snow cone machine, bubble gum machine, outdoor movies with a video projector and large sheet hanging from the tree house, fire pit for s’mores, three-season room surrounded by glass/screens with a wood burner, kayak and other water toys for the lake, and a basketball hoop. 100 Stepping Stone Lane, Orchard Park, NY 14127; (716) 289-3696 Email: smfien@gmail.com On Facebook General Update: September will begin my 9th year of retirement. They say time goes fast when you retire, and they are not wrong. Larry and I celebrated our 27th anniversary in November. We were some of the lucky ones during COVID. We are grateful that because of Larry's work situation we did not struggle financially. My dad when into Hospice the first week in April 2020. By God's grace we were at the only Hospice location that allowed visitors. Dad passed peacefully at hospice, surrounded by nurses that loved him and cared for him as if he were their own father. He believed there was a revolution of love coming to the church and he preached to anyone around till the day before he died. He also assured us he would check out what he could do for the Buffalo Bills when he got to heaven. Because of COVID we turned our living room and dining room into a preschool for our 3 favorite littles. We did not have children so there are no grandchildren in our family of 2. Remi was in our life at our last reunion. He now has twin siblings Asa and Ellie. They love spending time with GG and Uncle Larry. I had back surgery last June. I was pain free until Halloween day. We took the kids on the Halloween train ride and something happened to my back. The pain was much worse than before surgery. It has been a struggle to figure out what is wrong and how to treat it. I prayed that God would lead me to the right PT for me. He answered. I have been working with my Pt since February and have come a long way. I hope to be able to stop using a walker and a walking stick by Christmas. Education after Houghton: Buffalo State—Masters; University of Buffalo—Post Masters Occupation Update: I taught for 36 years. Pre-school, kindergarten, first grade, second grade and college at Houghton Buffalo campus and Damen Service/Church Involvement: We currently attend the East Aurora Wesleyan Church, Part of Revive Wesleyan. Our pastor is the son of Debbie Beers. My claim to fame is that I was his kindergarten teacher. Gary and Debbie pastored the East Aurora Wesleyan Church when Kevin was young, and now Kevin has returned. In My Spare Time . . . I have been taking art lessons for two years from Nick Wilton, an artist in California. I started during COVID I’ve done a lot of dabbling and learning techniques. I enjoy sharing my art room with friends. Nothing better than creating together. The kids also enjoy my art room. I made the mistake of having them paint on canvas and now paper will not do! Going to the beach is high on my list. Lake Erie is only ten minutes away. Being near the water is a relaxing reset for me. My Time at Houghton Major: Elementary Education. Minor: Psychology Favorite Professor: Dr. James Chamberlain
Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: I loved our class events. I remember being really sad at our Freshman picnic because our time at Houghton was going so fast. Houghton Memory I Enjoy Sharing: My favorite memory is truly how the Houghton experience was intensely formative to my faith and worldview. It is with me today in ways I can hardly express. My Time After Houghton and News Since Our Last Reunion Lucy and I just now celebrated our 45th anniversary. It has been 45 wonderful years of following God’s leading. It was in the past 8+ years that I was called into the pastorate as a licensed local pastor in the United Methodist Church. It followed a path that we could not have planned except for God’s leading. There is too much to share here, but we spent 35 years in psychology, education, and education publishing. I am now leading a team that is developing
practical online courses to train lay people in various aspects of service within the church. We are developing these courses in the manner and delivery of interactive online learning on the Moodle platform. Our travels over our life together took us from Houghton; to Alfred; to Wheaton, Illinois; Phoenix, Arizona; and finally to settle in Oklahoma in 2000. In that time, I served as a school psychologist, clinical psychologist, school administrator, electronic learning designer, and university professor. I guess I have always known since Houghton days that I would one day serve as a staff member at a church. Little did I know that it would take 38 years after Houghton to get me trained. What an honor, now, to serve as an appointed pastor here in rural Oklahoma. We have two sons we are blessed to have: One in Oklahoma City and the other in Newport News, Virginia. One is a Lt Col in the Air Force Reserves and the other works in online learning user support with virtual charter schools.
