Introduction Designers interested in developing their career in a global society should conceive design as a global practice. Day after day, the markets are becoming more competitive and ever changing, while the consumer is more demanding when it comes to quality and shows an increasing interest in cultural, ethical or environmental aspects that traditionally haven’t been properly noticed, until today. This context requires from companies and institutions an understanding of the complex market reality and the discovery of strategies that enable them to satisfy the consumer’s needs and demands, and outstand among their competitors. In the last few years, products (whether they are an object, a dress, a space) are no longer perceived for their physical dimension, but for every single detail surrounding them: they way they are shown (both in virtual and real life), their in-store presence, their packaging, the graphics and their visual communication. The experience of buying, using and consuming is increasingly related to the values associated with a product and the brand it belongs to (intangible values, such as symbols or emotions) that influence customer loyalty towards them. For all this, today we cannot comprehend the conception of a new product, space of service without the involvement and complicity of professionals from different disciplines. Those professionals with a global conception, capable of understanding together languages and ways to work will be able to collaborate with other designers or join multidisciplinary work teams, in addition to being those prepared to offer a solid professional response, keeping with the demands of the current market.
General course objectives .
.
.
.
.
The aim of the course is to acquire a global vision, open to collaborations with other design disciplines and gain sensitivity and predisposition towards working together with other professionals or join multidisciplinary teams. The course is a way to improve professional profiles that are performing in a particular discipline (product or fashion design, communication, interior design or marketing and business) by expanding their knowledge and skills, and facilitating the contact or even the development of projects within other design disciplines. In some cases, students will also acquire insights and knowledge of their fields of specialization. A chance to stay current in latest trends of their specialities and an opportunity to face new perspective through discussion with lecturers and professional colleagues. Acknowledgement of different project approaches, new work methods; conceptual, technical or material aspects that will make easier to collaborate with other designers or teams. At the same time, their own professional practice will be enriched. To provide an opportunity to research in fields that students have never approached, as well as in hybrid fields, bringing knowledge that will enhance the critical eye turning it a starting point to build new innovative proposals.
2
Methodology Students will work intensively together with the teaching staff in sessions where different typologies will be combined. The curse lecturers, who are prestigious active professionals, transmit the most recent contents from their own everyday experiences. The Master in Global Design takes "The City" as its over-arching framework and the thread that binds together the entire course. The city of Barcelona is presented as a scenario filled with possibilities for study and analysis, for action and reaction, an environment that will allow the students to take on different projects from myriad points of view. Cities are spaces teeming with life, activity, work, routines, visitors and traffic, for participation and exclusion... They are places for interaction and exchange, complex spaces in which a multitude of cultures and people with different interests and aspirations coexist. Barcelona is an excellent city in which to tackle these themes due to its long metropolitan tradition, the vitality of its society, art and culture and its ongoing desire to reinvent itself. In this course the projects can use a variety of themes to look at the city, such as mobility, culture, leisure, tourism, housing, services, spaces/equipment or furniture, communication, sustainability, etc. In all these areas, designers have almost infinite possibilities for action; the students must have an open, global vision and work individually and in multidisciplinary teams, with the aim of producing meaningful reflections that aspire to improve the quality of life in our cities. Using a variety of approaches, the Master in Global Design offers the students an interpretation that will permit them to understand the distinctive features of contemporary professional design. In order to properly develop the learning process of the course and guarantee a global design experience, the study plan has been conceived through the combination of different work methods:
THEORETICAL LESSONS Professors will introduce different subjects that will not only provide methodological knowledge but also analyse practices and cases. To reinforce knowledge acquisition, the teaching staff will monitor the development of research and analysis projects through in-person tutorials. TRANSVERSAL TOOLS Students will be trained in using transversal tools that will back the whole design project, regardless of the field they will apply it to.
3
IMMERSIONS IN DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES The methodology of IED Barcelona is based on the concept of “learning-by-doing”, by which students consolidate knowledge acquisition through the practice and experience in problem-solving and real professional challenges. With this philosophy in mind, students will be part of intensive two-week immersions in different design disciplines. In the first week there will be conferences, lectures and theoretical contents on the discipline. They will hear the voices of different professionals who will show their own work and offer their perspective on a particular subject related to the discipline. Students will develop their own research project on the topic. Once the theoretical immersion is over, students will go into a practice immersion in workshops where they will develop projects under the monitoring of a professor. During this process, while projecting ideas and experimenting with materials in the search for innovative solutions, they will put the acquired theoretical and technical knowledge into practice. This will enable them to gain in-depth knowledge and boost their personal approach. VISITS TO STUDIOS AND WORKSHOPS The opportunity of an enriching experience: a chance to gain first-hand knowledge about the reality of design, through visits to workshops, shops and spaces that have become benchmarks in design in Barcelona, discussing with designers in their own studios. To be in contact with the real market helps students to relate the contents provided during the Master with the reality of professional practice. MASTER’S FINAL PROJECT As consolidation of the new knowledge acquired during the course, students have to develop a Master’s Final Project, where all the experiences of the course will come together. Working in teams students are required to develop a whole global design process, from research to the final project presentation. The Final Project will take a holistic approach that will give the students the freedom to explore concepts and gather together content with open-minded sensitivity, with the aim of producing innovative, meaningful reflections that aspire to improve the quality of life in our cities.
4
At whom it is aimed The Master in Global Design is conceived for professionals and recent graduates interested in developing their career in design projects of global nature with a multidisciplinary and transversal perspective; product, fashion, communication, interior designers or professionals in other disciplines who want to update their knowledge and acquire competences in other design areas beside their speciality. The course is also open to professionals in architecture and visual arts, and also in the fields of marketing, communication or business predisposed to acknowledge tools that enable them to include a global view of design in their previous knowledge. Student profile: Graduates in any design discipline, architects, visual artists, professionals in the fields of marketing and communication. Requirements: Applicants for the Master in Global Design should present a portfolio with their work. After having evaluated the portfolio, the prospective students will have a personal interview with the coordinators.
Career opportunities Participants will be qualified to join different kinds of projects with tools that help them to interpret from an overall perception of design. They will be able to face the challenges posed by the current design market, broadening their knowledge to work with multidisciplinary teams and coordinate projects in which design is approached from a transversal perspective comprising different disciplines.
.
. .
They will be enabled to work in some of these areas / functions: Management of design projects, both in their own studios and small, medium or large companies; start up different types of business and new projects. Creative design direction. Incorporation in interdisciplinary design teams.
5
Capabilities Methodology is the path that will enable students to develop their capabilities to embark on future projects from four key approaches: CRITICAL ANALYSIS Capability for analysis and critical thinking to question what is known and generate innovation. Capacity to apply methodologies to develop research rigorously – collect information, classify and codify it to derive relevant information. Transmit research results in an adequate, clear and ordered manner. CONCEPTUALIZATION Identify needs; define fields of action and possible scenarios. Ability to develop personal criteria/arguments, hold a personal interpretation. Capability of generating “consistent” concepts – that can become a starting point for a design project. Application of tools for conceptualization: how to communicate – reflect/represent – the concepts to be developed in a design project. INTEGRATION OF DIFFERENT DISCIPLINES Capability of keeping an open mind on related disciplines to embody them in one’s speciality. Collaborate with professionals from different fields and disciplines. Generate and foster teamwork dynamics, exchange ideas and discuss to achieve the best result. PROJECT / IMPLEMENT Approach different work methodologies to ensure that a good concept evolves to become a good result (product-message-space, etc.) Apply project tools – delineate ideas, produce working models, prototypes, essays, experiment with materials, and their representation. Apply the available resources to carry out research, and produce frameworks, along with abilities to develop, represent and communicate design projects.
6
General contents The proposed structure of the general contents of the course is organised conceptually, in 4 learning modules:
Module 1 Project methodologies The module contents are developed in the following subject areas: REASERCH AND ANALYSIS Students will learn to begin a research including an approach to the market, the study of historic references, and observation as an information source and documenting the process to transform data in useful material to be applied in a design process. Research exercises on real Global Design cases will be done, with the objective of applying tools to observe, classify and analyse information. In each case, work will be executed in order to build the history, brand values and its communication, the product features, the commercial space where it is exhibited, and every global aspect involved. DESIGN CRITIQUE Having a grounded critical approach towards design reality is essential to construct a compromised and profound practice. Assessing the history of design and the comprehension of the current environment will provide students with analysis tools that can be applied in their own projects. USER-CENTERED DESIGN Every design strategy is focused on users’ needs. Students will acknowledge techniques that will enable them to study users and analyse their relation with different design-application areas. Social, cultural and multicultural aspects; lifestyles and their involvement with the environment will be examined.
Module 2 Resources for conceptualization Incorporating transversal resources that can be applied to the design project approach in every discipline will provide students a transversal perspective. STRATEGIC DESIGN The focus will be on resources related to the process to conceptualize ideas. Students will learn to set out the strategic aspects of a project, carrying out case analysis and pointing out opportunities. They will acquire skills to express strategies focused on innovation and to add value through design by using tools and methodologies for innovation. PROJECT PLANNING TECHNIQUES The development, representation and communication of design projects will be fundamental throughout the course. Students will strengthen their abilities to draw, illustrate and sketch as communication and documenting tools. Said techniques are the grounds for generating conceptual outlines.
7
Module 3 Immersion in different design disciplines Acknowledging the different design disciplines and their possibilities will provide students close knowledge on the potentialities and languages of each area. As detailed in Methodology, there will be intensive two-week incursions in different design disciplines. In the first week, students receive conferences, talks and theoretical content on a particular discipline. They will develop a theoretical research for each one of said sessions about a subject of their choice. During the second week students develop an exercise open to experimenting and focused on workshop work accompanied by tutorials directed by professionals. It is during brainstorming and experimenting with materials when students will put into practice the theoretical and technical content acquired in the previous week. Thematic immersions will be developed in the following areas: 3.1 GRAPHIC DESIGN AND COMMUNICATION Students will focus on the following discipline-related subjects: - Typography - Digital design / web / interactive interfaces - Packaging - Illustration - New trends in graphic design 3.2 PRODUCT DESIGN Contents will be structured on these subjects: - Social design - Neo crafts - New technologies and new materials - Sustainability - New market trends 3.3 FASHION DESIGN The sessions will work on: - Creative fashion direction - Accessories and footwear - Fashion photography - Contemporary jewellery - New trends in fabrics and materials 3.4 SPACES DESIGN Students will tackle the space issue from different approaches: - Interior commercial spaces - Cultural interior spaces - Outdoor spaces design - Sustainability in spaces design - New trends

It offers any type design solutions, from desktop to web fonts. Also, we could provide with both Latin and nonLatin multiscript type families. Some of the fonts in the catalog have been awarded several Certificate of Excellence in Type Design given by the Type Directors Club in New York and the Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI).
