Although IEEE Turkey Student Branches achieves a lot of new projects and events that are the first of their kinds why they could not obtain enough respect in a global level? As IEEE Marketing Coordinator, we focused on this question and followed many studies closely. As a result, we decided to apply a guide including some video representations of IEEE, Newspapers, etc. For this purpose, we aimed both the representation of Societies under Turkey IEEE Student Branches and also the representation of Turkey IEEE Marketing Team. You will find chance to observe the studies created under Turkey IEEE in this News. Firstly I want to thank to Caner Özdemir and Gülsüm Buğdaycıoğlu from Marketing Team who helped us during the preparation of Turkey Section News. Also, I want to thank to Ayhan Epik, who is IEEE Turkey Representative ,because of his valuable contributions on publication process ,to all my coordinator friends and chapter representatives, to IEEE METU Team who organized the first PES Congress in the world and to my valuable instructor Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Karpuz who gave me unlimited support in every point.

ear readers, Since I started working as Student Representative in IEEE Turkey, we are working for the idea of creating an environment which will be open to everyone in IEEE Turkey and will be followed globally. As a result, we decided to create this e-magazine. IEEE Turkey is one of the most active sections in the world and there are lots of members in IEEE Turkey whom are open to develop themselves. We should use this rich environment to create people and student branches which will make a difference in Turkey. With the help of this magazine, we will show what IEEE Turkey does and will do in the near future. Because the magazine published in 2 different languages (Turkish and English) , it will help us to contact with companies and with the IEEE environment outside of Turkey. Another side of the magazine is the fact that every student branch can introduce their events with a limited area. In addition to the monthly reports of student chapter representatives and project coordinators, we can see the advancements of them in this magazine. In order to develop this environment, we will continue to create this type of projects as IEEE Turkey. In this duty that we started in June, 2014, our main purpose is to create an environment that everyone can follow and question the works of IEEE Turkey while we increase the number of technical projects. If we really want to advance in this IEEE Turkey environment, we should leave our titles behind and start working with everything we got. We will create an environment that is open to criticism and we will develop ourselves with faster and more efficient manner. This planning is not for only one year. The purpose of this planning is to continue improve after we left our jobs and create lots of great events and projects every year as IEEE Turkey. Since IEEE Turkey Congress held in Koรง University, we are making changes on the corporate structure of IEEE Turkey in order to make this environment more suitable for improvement and open to everyone by leaving our egos behind. Without the efforts of student chapter representatives and project coordinators, who show that this year will be a great year even though it is just a beginning, I could not talk about these projects and improvements. I would like to thank all of them and especially to Ali who is the editor of this magazine.

WHAT IS DEMIC?

Bahadır Akın Akgül IEEE’TR Academic Turkey Coordinator

Let’s go back a little...

In the beginning, a group of students had an idea. It was just an idea, but at the IEEE-IST Student Branch, every idea has the potential to be special. We started from scratch, defining parameters and goals, and soon we found several volunteers motivated by what we felt was going to be a great project. It wasn’t easy: it took effort, sacrifice, ingenuity, and patience. We used borrowed or personal equipment - even eggs’ boxes were used! Everything to have the best conditions (acoustics, lighting, image) and make videos with really high quality. We had to convince professors and students of the project’s importance for education. In the beginning, there was some reluctance about what we were building but also a great enthusiasm. Step by step we grew into a relevant initiative in our community and with that the will of doing something bigger started to arise. Also, the project counted with the support from the IEEE Portugal Section, that by recognizing the effort of the volunteers and also the potential of such project, supplied the IEEE-IST Academic team with the right tools to create high quality contents and evolve the development processes of IEEE Academic Modules. The willpower, motivation and effort of the team made it possible to go from nothing to where we are today.

ITKK / Autumn 2014

“We are a big family.”

IEEE In IEEE Turkey, most prob-

ably every member heard or lived this sentence at least for one time. ITKK(IEEE Turkey Fellow Branches Project) is sometimes the result of this family, sometimes the reason why this family exists. It’s a unique satisfaction when the success comes from the members from different cities and universities. It’s the creative way of being more planned and devoted. It’s the creative way of breaking the physical borders. The key of the success of IEEE Turkey comes from the bonds between members and this bond is ITKK in Turkey. ITKK, main part of working together and sharing the knowledge, is one of the IEEE Turkey projects that actively work and it is actually the first project of IEEE Turkey. ITKK makes online meetings just like ordinary ones gathers money for travel. How it works? Even though, ITKK is seen as only the coordination team and representatives, it is the whole student branches with the fellowships in Turkey. Every year, with the start of the congress, student branches tries 14 / IEEE Turkey Section

to find fellows for them regarding to their mutual needs. The process continues until every student branch finds a fellow. In order to maximize the efficiency of the fellowships, every fellowship can only last for 2 years and in a year maximum 3 student branches can be fellows. With the start of the fellowships, for organizing the events in the year and controlling the fellowships until the next congress, a mechanism is created. It is called coordination team. Coordination team includes coordinator and the members decided by the coordinator. Coordinators are selected in congress with an intentional letter as the other subcommittees in IEEE Turkey, every year. After that, coordinator takes initiative to create a coordination team. The current coordination team is selected by motivational

letters and personal interviews. In the team, there are experienced members, branch representatives of last years and inexperienced but willing members. When creating the team, geographic distribution played an important role, too. There are responsible members for every fellowship in order to help to solve the problems of communication between student branches. The other part of this big organization includes branch representatives. Representatives, creates bond with their fellows, coordination team and also the other student branches in Turkey. The representatives are chosen by their own student branch. Generally the representatives have a home and a fellow in every city. The event ideas follow these fellowships. Sometimes, these representatives do not organize events with only

their fellows but also with the other student branches by saying “We have fellows but we have cousins, too!” Most importantly ITKK belongs to everyone who feels one of us without thinking of the duties. As a result of working together and high motivation, ITKK created 2 projects. One of them is another big IEEE Turkey project now called E# Training Team. The other one is a web-based project called “Tercih Kafası” still working with ITKK. This means that if someone has an idea in ITKK, coordination team and representatives work for making it real. ITKK lives like that all the time. For 3 years, at the start of the year, in order to make representatives contact with each other and coordination team and share the information that could help in the semeste , ITKK organizes a camp. This year, camp is organized in Didim, with 36 people from 28 different universities. Moreover, ITKK does not only control the fellowships but also creates environments for fellows to organize events and in some events, they make people play games. These games are gathered in a document and this document is updated when a change or addition occurs. At the end, if you are interested in, want to learn more or you have a question, you can easily reach us. You can reach us via facebook , twitter or itkk.ieee@ gmail.com.

P.S. !!!

Open form of ITKK is IEEE Turkey Fellow Branches Project in English. However, it is called “i-te-ka-ka” The project created by Ferhan Özkan and Çınar Yeşil. Respectively, Çınar Yeşil, Simay Akar, Meryem Bayraktar, Burak Ünlü, Öykü Geçgel were the coordinators. The logo is chosen at a contest between fellow branches at 2011. In IEEE Turkey, it is the only project that created project. Kıvılcım Şebnem Elibüyük IEEE Turkey ITKK Project Coordinator

IEEE Electric Cars Project/ Autumn 2014

Mustafa Yeşilçam IEEE Turkey Electrical Vehicle Project Coordinator

ELECTRIC CARS PROJECT People always invented new things to make their life easier in the world. One of the most important inventions is engine system without a doubt. Motor vehicles are used and part of our life for decades but use of internal combustion engines started to create problems for a long time. One of the most common problems is the emissions of that engines (nitrogen oxides-NO, carbon monoxide – CO, small particles, volatile organic compounds etc.) The greenhouse effect of these emissions and rich sources for organic fuels creates a chaos. Because of the increase in the number of cars, emissions and rate of carbon dioxides started to increase. Therefore, the greenhouse effect has become and this led to change in the seasons. As a result, alternative fuels become popular. I think, use of alternative fuels is too late but at least we understand the damage of the internal combustion engine and started using these fuels. Because of the reasons as I mentioned above, we, as IEEE Turkey, formed a project group called Electric Cars Project Group for encouraging the engineering students and give rising generation a guide last year. We support student branches in Turkey to design their own electric cars. Now, the branches are competing in “Cars with Alternative Energy” competition organized by TUBITAK and they help to show and use the technology of electric cars for our country. Due to the R&D studies in the universities in Turkey, we are behind of the other countries in the technology of motor vehicles. However, we can reach them with using the technology of electric cars and we can produce our own electric cars for commercial use. When the production of electric cars becomes more common, our country will advance and will be less dependent on the outside factors. This will also result with good social effects. Increase in the number of production of electric cars will be the solution for the greenhouse effect and petroleum wars where there are over 940 million cars in the world and it increases 13% every year.
