WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT The International Emmy® is increasingly becoming the standard of excellence for television programming produced outside the United States. As the amount and quality of international television have increased enormously over the last few years, the International Emmy® and its governing organization have kept pace. This year, the International Academy’s activities ranged from meetings and presentations in the US and abroad, to judgings in 18 countries around the world, and a spectacular Academy Day in Istanbul under the sponsorship of Turkish production powerhouse Ay Yapim. The Gala is the culmination of a year-long process in which television programs in 14 different categories are entered, judged, and then compete for an Emmy®. In recent years we have added Sports Documentary and children’s programming categories to this event. Increasingly, this Gala and the International Emmy® World Television Festival, which took place over the past weekend, can give a diligent viewer a very good idea of the state and growth of quality television programing around the world. A highlight of every Gala is the awarding of special Emmys to individuals who have made an impact on television someplace in the world. Tonight, the International Emmy® Founders Award will be presented to Jesse Armstrong, whose landmark television series “Succession” shaped the conversation about television this year and became a household word. In India, Ektaa R. Kapoor has been a household name for many years and played a major role in shaping today’s Indian media landscape. We are proud to present her with the International Emmy® Directorate Award. So, welcome to the International Emmy® Awards Gala. Congratulations to the International Emmy® winners, best wishes for next time to the other fine finalists, and let the International Emmys begin.

DONALD TAFFNER, JR. PRESIDENT OF DLT ENTERTAINMENT Donald Taffner, Jr. grew up in the television industry learning to read a Nielson book at age 9 under the tutelage of Don Taffner, the Emmy award winning founder of DLT Entertainment Ltd who brought British shows such as “The World at War”, “Rumpole of the Bailey” and “Benny Hill” to America and one of the original transatlantic formats “Three’s Company” based upon the UK show “Man About the House”. After attending “graduate school” in DLT’s mailroom, Donald set up Emerald City Productions, DLT’s Dublin based animation studio. Upon his return to America, he founded a sales division focusing on local public television stations. Within a year, sales to these stations increased tenfold. In future years, US cable, home video, syndication and development fell under Donald’s direction and record sales of “Three’s Company” followed. Today Donald oversees worldwide sales and development, personally focusing on development in the US and UK. It was Donald’s vision to bring an established US “showrunner” to the UK to produce programs using a US style table of writers allowing 127 episodes of “My Family” to be produced over just 11 series, an unprecedented pace for UK productions. Just last year 11,000,000 hours of “My Family” were watched on BBC iPlayer. Other credits include Executive Producer of Dame Judi Dench’s “As Time Goes By”. Donald has also overseen DLT’s expansion into talent representation in The UK as well as the recent over £10,000,000 expansion of its Shaftesbury Theatre in London, currently home to “Mrs Doubtfire”. 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of DLT Entertainment.

RHYS DARBY, ACTOR & COMEDIAN Rhys Darby can currently be seen starring in season 2 of Max’s Our Flag Means Death opposite Taika Waititi. Rhys first burst onto the scene as ‘Murray’ the band manager in HBO’s Flight of the Concords and later starred in TBS’s Wrecked. On the film side, Rhys has most recently starred in Relax, I’m From the Future, which premiered at Fantasia Film Festival. He will next be seen in Next Goal Wins. He appears as ‘Nigel’ in Jumanjji: The Next Level alongside Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart and Jack Black. He reprised this role from the 2017 box office hit Jumanjji: Welcome to the Jungle. Additionally, Rhys appeared in Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows and Waititi’s Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Rhys made his feature film debut in Yes Man with Jim Carrey and then opposite Philip Seymour Hoffman in Richard Curtis’ Pirate Radio. Rhys also recurred in Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and has guest starred in the reboot of X-Files Home Economics, Single Parents, Life in Pieces, and Angie Tribeca. He has also provided his voice to Bob’s Burguers, The Simpsons, Voltron, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and most recently, Kiff.

EKTAA R. KAPOOR, CO-FOUNDER BALAJI TELEFILMS The special Emmy® is presented to one of India’s leading entertainment executives and co-founder of production powerhouse Balaji Telefilms in recognition of her remarkable career and influence on the television industry. Kapoor has been a major figure in Indian television since starting Balaji in 1994, with her parents; Indian movie star and producer Jeetendra Kapoor and media executive Shobha Kapoor. She is credited with revamping India’s television landscape, pioneering an entire genre of television content and heralding India’s satellite television boom. Under the Balaji banner, she has created and produced more than 17,000 hours of television and 45 films, and launched one of the country’s first Indian OTT platforms, Alt Balaji. Kapoor has created a TV revolution in India and largely shaped the broadcast landscape creating shows that serve as channel drivers. She has won almost every major TV award including being featured among Fortune India’s 50 ”Most Powerful Women in Asia,” Forbes’ “India Tycoons of Tomorrow,” Time’s “Impact List,” The Hollywood Reporter’s “40 Most Influential Women in International Film,” and the only woman from the Indian television market listed in Variety500 - an index of the 500 most influential business leaders shaping the global media industry. Balaji Telefilms has emerged as one of India’s leading integrated media conglomerates with market leadership and success in the television and film content industries, among other entertainment-led businesses. Pioneering widely diverse genres of content, its various brands reflect the company’s different businesses. Today, production house Balaji Telefilms is synonymous with ground-breaking television content. Balaji Telefilms Ltd. is one of the largest content production houses across India, South Asia, South East Asia and the Middle East delivering Hindi and regional content.

JESSE ARMSTRONG, WRITER, CREATOR & SHOWRUNNER The special Emmy® is presented to Armstrong in recognition of his extraordinary talent and global impact. Jesse Armstrong is a British author, screenwriter, and producer. He is a co-creator of the Channel 4 comedy series Peep Show (2003–2015) and Fresh Meat (2011–2016), and the creator of the HBO satirical comedy-drama series Succession (2018–2023). Armstrong has received many nominations and awards, including a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for co-writing the film In the Loop (2009), and three wins for the Primetime Emmy® Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series for writing the season finales of the first, second and third seasons of Succession. Jesse was born and educated in Oswestry, Shropshire, and attended Manchester University where he studied American Studies as an undergraduate and American History for his Masters, after which he worked as a researcher for a Member of Parliament. Working as a solo writer, Jesse wrote The Entire History of You for Black Mirror and the final episode of the first season of HBO’s Veep. In 2016 Jonathan Cape published his novel set against the background of the Bosnian War, Love Sex and Other Foreign Policy Goals. The New York Times said “Armstrong proves to be just as maniacally funny here as he is on the screen.”

JUDGING THE ACADEMY WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE 2023 SEMI-FINAL HOSTS, JURORS & SEMI-FINAL COORDINATORS This Summer, the Semi-Final Round of Judging for the 2023 International Emmy® Awards competition took place mostly in-person. From June to September, 30 member companies hosted Jury panels. Our Hosts spanned 18 countries : Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Germany, India, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, the UAE and the United States. The remote judgings were powered by Frame.io, the video review and collaboration platform. Semi-final Rounds of Judging are not only a crucial step in the judging process, but also a great networking opportunity for the Host, and for Jurors invited to participate in the competition. Jurors, selected by the Academy in collaboration with the Host, are television professionals involved in all sectors of the industry. Hosts have the opportunity to choose from two options : to organize a judging with sole branding for their company or to have outside sponsors for their event and become an International Emmy® World Television Festival Sponsor.
