Gideon Sam (President of SASCOC), Ryan van den Bergh (Chairman of the MSSA’s eSports Board of Control), and Colin Webster (President of the MSSA).
Protea Colours are the highest accolade that is awarded to South African sporting teams. Only the Protea Colours Board can award Protea Colours. The members of such board consist of people representing both the South African Department of Sport and Recreation (SRSA), and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC). Thus all South African teams that are fully accredited wear the much coveted Protea badge on their ‘battle kit’. No doubt readers who were watching the 2010 FIFA World Cup would have noticed that the South African squad “Bafana Bafana” wore the Protea emblem on the leir shirts. Likewise the South African rugby squad, swimmers, athletes, etcetera, all wear the Protea emblem when the team meets the criteria of the Protea Colours Board and represents South Africa officially in international competition. With Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) having designed its qualifying rounds to meet the Protea Colours Board’s requirements, the MSSA is well on track to have the team that will attend the 2010 IeSF Grand Final approved by the Protea Colours Board for the award for Protea Colours. This will be the first time that gamers will be awarded such colours for FIFA Online and WarCraft III. The award of such colours not only indicates the level of accreditation that eSports has managed to achieve in South Africa, but also assists the gamers in obtaining sports bursaries at Universities. There is no doubt, that eSports with the award of Protea Colours, will, in South Africa, continue to grow and flourish.

By Hei-Eun, Kim South Korea is well known for its e-sports pro-teams particularly for StarCraft pro-league. Like other sports team such as soccer, e-sports pro-teams consist of director, coach and players. To achieve excellent results at the games, the role of director and coach is as important as the ability of each player. IeSF find out the role, qualification and other curiosity via interview with Ji Kang Yoo, the senior coach of pro-team ‘Khan’ of Samsung Electronics. - Is there qualification for a pro e-Sports team coach? There is no special qualification for being coach of e-Sport team at this moment. Anyone who has passion and love to the e-Sports can be eligible for the coach. I’ve heard that International e-Sports Federation (IeSF) has studied on International e-Sports Standardization of Referee, e-Players and so on. Although currently there is no clear statement regarding qualification of coaches , I expect the future work of IeSF establishing global standards regarding on it. - How is a pro team composed of? And how is the size of it? Mostly, a pro-team is made up of director, head coach, coach and e-players. Including the first string and second string, the number of e-players is approximately 20 to 25. - What is the big difference between coach and director? Firstly, a director is more like a captain of a ship. On the other hand, coach assists the director to help make his or her decision. In addition, coach serves as a bridge between e-players and director encouraging their communication.

-How is the exchange among pro-teams? We have ‘Friendly Matches’ and ‘Warm-up Matches’ with other teams, before we have official competitions. The Warm-up Match is for practicing different playing style and checking ‘builds’ and strategies of e-players from different teams. So we, coaches, periodically keep in touch with coaching staff of other teams to arrange ‘Friendly Matches’ and ‘Warm-up Matches’. - How does coach manage e-players? Since I joined the e-Sport pro-team as a coach, I have stayed with the e-players for 24 hours taking care of them. As there are differences among individuals, in communal living a little thing sometime could incur troubles influencing on the atmosphere of the team. Therefore, I try not to miss the small things which happen between e-players to ensure such trouble does not have unfavorable impact on the outcome. Moreover, it is very important for coaches to know that even a great player has his or her own rhythm in games. To let them keep their pace, we do find what e-players lack of and try to make up for drawbacks of e-players. - Is there special coaching style you have? I usually try to have good relationship with our e-players. Besides that, I put my effort to boost the morale of all team members whether they win or lose. In other teams, when e-players lose their game, their coach let e-players practice more and sometime even scold them. However, we rather let our player to take a day off and encourage them to do better at the next game unlike other teams. 5
