Intercultural competences Eating in pubs, snack bars, self-service restaurants follows the international customs. In restaurants with a higher standard wait until the waiter seats you. If many tables are vacant, you may choose a table yourself. Pay attention to the atmosphere in the restaurant. If uncertain, wait for the waiter to help you.

Intercultural competences Habits for breakfast and lunch vary depending on the working hours and the size of the company. Between 9.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. there will be a short break for breakfast. Lunch is equally short, around half an hour. Large companies and schools cater for their staff and students in canteens, cafeterias or refectories. Also it is quite common to bring one’s meals. However, you do not eat at your desk. There will be a special breakfast room.

Making arrangements Eating times for evening meals also vary. Privately, evening meals in German families may start at 6.00 p.m. or 8.00 p.m. depending on the family situation, and at 9.00 pm in Spanish families. Dinners in restaurants in Germany rarely begin before 7.00 p.m. but rarely later than 8.00 p.m., and between 9.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m.

As a rule, Germans welcome each other with a brief and firm handshake at the first formal introduction. Germans never kiss and cuddle to welcome friends opposite to Spanish. Trendy exceptions are possible, mostly among women. First name basis is common in the sage age group, with friends, neighbours, sports mate. Strangers, older persons or authorities (teachers) are addressed with “Mr” or “Ms” and with their family name.
