ASEM-Conference 2018 Lifelong Learning Policies & Adult Education Professionals 2

Multiplier Event Comparative Studies in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning (COMPALL) European policies on lifelong learning increasingly affect adult and lifelong learning practices in the EU member countries. At the same time, study programmes and disciplines focusing on adult and lifelong learning do not include, or only to a very limited extent, questions of European policies or international comparisons of adult and lifelong learning. Additionally, mobility rates among education students are very low. For prospective educators to become active actors in the context of a Common European Education Area, there is a central need to ensure that they (1) can analyze the relation between European policies and concrete educational practices, (2) are able to do comparisons on adult and lifelong learning in different European countries, and (3) have created first professional networks with other prospective educators in the field of adult and lifelong learning. Based on the experiences of an ERASMUS Intensive Programme, the COMPALL has created an intensive Strategic Partnership between seven European universities from Germany, Italy, Portugal, Hungary and Denmark, all of which have international expertise in adult and lifelong learning. Additionally, several universities from Europe and beyond has joined as associated partners. The Strategic Partnership developed a sustainable joint study module, including a short-term mobility phase, for master’s and doctoral students in the context of adult and lifelong learning. The joint module enables students to develop analytical, comparative and transversal competencies. A professional online network—developed on LinkedIn—provides information, exchange and research channel for international study opportunities in adult and lifelong learning. The Strategic Partnership integrates an international approach into national adult and lifelong learning curricula, promote the development of competences in the context of European educational policies and comparative competences in adult and lifelong learning (both on an interdisciplinary basis), raise the mobility of students in adult and lifelong learning, and develop a personal professional network for participants of the joint module and other interested individuals.

ASEM-Conference 2018 Lifelong Learning Policies & Adult Education Professionals 3

Multiplier Event For that purpose, a joint module will has developed for master’s and doctoral students in the context of adult and lifelong learning. The joint module will be piloted and implemented in a sustainable fashion into the curricula of all partner universities. To that end, the following intellectual outputs has be developed: a) Joint-module methodology: ‘Comparative Studies and Adult and Lifelong Learning’ b) Online tutorial for the preparation of students at all partner universities (applicable also at institutions outside the consortium at no charge) c) Professional online network as a sustainable information, exchange and research platform for participants and other individuals interested in international studies in adult and lifelong learning d) Comparative analysis as an academic basis for the implementation of comparative studies in adult and lifelong learning and as learning outcome of the pilot participants. The module was be tested in three pilots with all together more than 200 students during a 10 to 12 day intensive phase. We expect the Strategic Partnership to have the following impact: (1) systematic integration of European educational policies and comparative studies into national adult and lifelong learning curricula at the participating institutions and beyond, (2) an increase in mobility among former and potential participants of the joint module, and (3) a stronger presence of European perspectives in individual study pathways in adult and lifelong learning. Furthermore, the Strategic Partnership aims to improve the employability of programme participants, raise the PhD rate in adult and lifelong learning, increase the European activities of future professionals in adult and lifelong learning, and contribute to a peaceful development in Europe and beyond.

Multiplier Event The COMPALL-Winter School The international Winter School “Comparative Studies on Adult Education and Lifelong Learning“ is dedicated to analysing and comparing international and European strategies in lifelong learning. Based on social policy models, lifelong learning strategies in Europe, including selected European countries, will be subject of a critical analysis. Additionally, subtopics of lifelong learning have been chosen for an indepth comparison and analysis of the situation in various European countries. During the first part of the Winter School, theories and approaches will be used for analysing European and international lifelong learning strategies. The programme features direct interactions with key European stakeholders in lifelong learning. Furthermore, local providers of adult and continuing education in Würzburg will be visited. The interaction will lead to a critical analysis and a comparison of lifelong learning strategies, as well as to a theory and practice reflection on international policies in lifelong learning. The second part of the Winter School will focus on the comparison of certain subtopics of lifelong learning in selected countries: How does the training of trainers vary in different countries? How does participation in adult education differ in various European countries? How do quality systems vary in different countries? Which differences and similarities can be found in the policies towards lifelong learning in certain countries? What conclusions can be drawn out of these differences and similarities? Questions of adult education and lifelong learning will be compared. The discussed questions within adult education will refer to learning processes of adults and the integration of them into diverse (educational) contexts. In an international context – especially within international organisations – one can find the term lifelong learning, which is frequently associated with adult learning. The Winter School will look on questions and discourses of lifelong learning from the perspective of adult education. The programme is oriented towards master and doctoral students from Europe and beyond. The main focus is on students who are enrolled in study programmes close to adult education and lifelong learning. Additionally, we welcome interdisciplinary approaches.
