IFDA NEW ENGLAND NON-PROFIT UPDATE During our holiday party, which is on Thursday, December 4th, at the Endicott Estate in Dedham, we will collect much-needed donations to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. After 18 years of giving, this will be our last year officially contributing to the Ronald McDonald House, so we hope you will show your support and help lessen the burden for all the families who keep the 22 room house full each and every year! We thank Chris Kay, our IFDA NE Community Service board member for all her work throughout her years on the board, on behalf of the Ronald McDonald House. Starting in January of 2015, IFDA NE will officially start supporting the Women’s Institute for Housing and Economic Development (WIHED). We invite you to explore their web-site and review their projects and the populations in need whom they serve: http://www.wihed.org The Women’s Institute creates quality affordable housing as a developer or developer consultant, and offers 30 years of expertise in all stages of development. They have offices in Middletown, Connecticut, as well as Boston.
Victory Gardens is a recent example of the supportive work WIHED does: “Victory Gardens is a 74-unit mixed-income supportive and affordable rental housing development on the campus of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Newington, Connecticut. Envisioned for and designed specifically with Veterans in mind, preference is given to eligible Veterans and their families, including homeless Veterans and those at-risk of becoming homeless. A comprehensive supportive services plan has been incorporated to support our Veterans’ needs beyond affordable housing, and includes a variety of programs and services provided by the Chrysalis Center and VA-CT.”
“The Women’s Institute is a national award-winning affordable housing development organization, which offers a core mission to promote economic opportunity and build strong communities by developing safe, affordable and supportive housing for individuals and families.” At the beginning of 2015, more information will be available at our events, and on-line about our support for WIHED and how IFDA NE members can partner with WIHED and we look forward to your questions about how you can best work with this dynamic organization!

The Membership Dinner also included the presentation of our 4th Designer Showcase Awards; thanks to our members, who submitted many outstanding examples of their work to be judged by a select panel of industry professionals. For each of these showcases, Design New England magazine’s Editor, Gail Ravgiala devoted her time and efforts to coordinate a judging panel for these awards. This year, Gail selected an impressive panel, which consisted of two peer interior designers and a professor:
Pamela Copeman, interior designer. Her noted for her posh panache and timeless designs that unite classic style with a modern, often colorful twist. With more than 20 years of experience, Copeman prides herself with designing spaces that truly reflect the people who live in them. She is an allied member of ASID and a past board member of IFDA. 2. Michael Ferzoco, president and founder of the Boston design firm Eleven Interiors. His work combines European 20th century vintage selections with custom and contemporary pieces to create distinct interiors. He also contributes his time and design expertise to several charitable organizations including the Room to Dream Foundation and Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS. 3. Anna Gitelman, associate professor at the New England School of Art and Design at Suffolk University. Anna teaches interior architecture and design. She is also a Principal of Studio A Design Inc., in Marblehead. 1.

STUDENT NOTES The 2014 New England Interior Design Career Day, an annual event, was held on October 10th in South Boston’s District Hall , an exciting civic space, on a day sponsored by the New England Chapters of IFDA, ASID, IIDA and NKBA. The theme of the day was THE ROAD AHEAD: WHERE DESIGN CAN TAKE YOU and 110 students from design schools throughout New England gathered to breakfast together and hear welcomes from all of the organizations. Carolyn Meek, FIFDA welcomed them from IFDA, New England.
Divided into four tour groups, the students spread out across the South Boston “Innovation District” which has fast become the location of architects, design firms, interior furnishings vendors and professionals within the Design area. Keynote speakers before the luncheon were Traci Roloff, co-founder of FilzFelt and Vice President of Marketing at Spinneybeck+FilzFelt and Kelly Smith, co-founder and Creative Director of FilzFelt and Creative Director at Spinneybeck. These young women are entrepreneurs who truly proved where Design can lead the young professional. At the luncheon, the students had the chance to sit with design professionals and have all their questions answers about where their design futures might lie. Those who lunched with the student included IFDA members Linda Mariani, Paula O’Sullivan and Ray Bachand and IFDA New England Chapter President Karen Dzendolet. The registration desk, usually the purview IFDA New England, was made up of Linda Mariani, FIFDA, Al Lagueux, Ray Bachand and Carolyn Meek, FIFDA. Following the luncheon, and as per tradition, awards were made to winners of the annual Design Competition.
NOTEWORTHY Rosemary Porto, Senior Designer for Poggenpohl Boston, was one of seven New England designers inducted to the New England Design Hall of Fame in 2014. Rosemary is very honored to be recognized for her design talent stating, "The essence of my work lies in translating my clients' vision into a design that aligns with their desires and with the harmony of their homes." The honored inductees will be celebrated on November 5 at an awards ceremony at the State Room in Boston. The award was created to recognize and honor the talented designers who have made a notable impression on residential design in New England.
Barbara Hirsch, Owner of Elza B. Design, Inc., won two awards over the past several months! She won the grand prize in the Designer Bath Showroom’s 2014 Designer Shine Awards. Her entry was a rustic/elegant master bathroom. This bathroom was photographed by Eric Roth and will be featured in a Designer Bath full page ad in the New England Home Nov/Dec 2014 issue. Barbara was also the grand prize winner in the ID Boston Magazine Boston Design Market 2014 Pin to Win contest.
Rebecca Wilson of RW Interiors had her recently renovated kitchen featured in the Boston Globe’s Sunday, October 19th Address section as their "Room of the Week". The kitchen was renovated to increase storage, counter, and seating space, and also to bring in more light and less draft through larger, energy efficient windows. She installed an island with a breakfast bar and built-in banquette to create an easy to maneuver area for her family and friend gatherings! To make the space feel more like the rest of the house and give it more character Rebecca replicated the house's trim and moldings. I used zebra-wood cabinets, a tile backsplash in complementary colors, an antique chandelier and recessed lights, and fabric window shades, with animal print chair pads for a bit of fun.
