letter from the
President
Dear Fellow Members of IFDA-NE, What a great beginning our flourishing chapter has had to 2019. I’d like to start by welcoming Director of Public Relations at JD Communications, Nicole Defrancesco to the IFDA-NE Board of Directors. She’s taking over as the VP of Communications for Chris Saad of DC Homes. Thank you Chris for your tireless dedication and service, Nicole has some big shoes to fill! I’d also like to welcome the following 2019 new members: Paul & Melissa Bunis, owners of Boston Stone Restoration; Kevin Cradock, President and CEO of Kevin Cradock Builders; Ryan Kelley, Owner and Artist at Wire By Ryan; Amy Fischer, Director of Marketing at Modern Luxury Interiors Boston; and Rachel Backstrom, Brand Ambassador for Marvin at 7 Tide. I can’t wait to see you all at our upcoming events and getting to know you better. We kicked off the year with a fun event by sharpening our target skills at Urban Axes in January. Next up was some very informative continued education at AVD and Marble & Granite which was followed by networking at the beautiful Metropolitan Cabinets showroom. April was busy for the chapter with three fantastic occasions. We started the month with our Design Week event- an educational seminar by Refine & Focus, titled “Design Thinking,” which was a sold out show. Next was our Annual Charity Paint-a-thon, wonderfully put together by VP of Community Service, Jacqui Becker. More details on that extremely successful undertaking which I am so proud to be a part of every year, later in this issue. We rounded out the month with a fantastic networking event “Time to un-Wined” at Poggenpohl. A great time was had by all who attended. We hope to see everyone at our exciting upcoming events. I am delighted to say that turnout grows stronger with each passing event this year. As always, please be encouraged to reach out to myself or any board member with ideas, questions, or feedback that you feel can help strengthen our great chapter. Best Regards,
John Nicholas John Nicholas Chapter President IFDA-New England

INNOVATION
This staircase floats from one level to the next in a new Fenway residence by integrating glass with millwork to achieve a truly frameless, floating look. Seam locations and alignment are critical in glasswork. Using a 3D Laser Scanner to precisely scan the openings and manipulate the design in CAD, Allstate Glass was able to adjust and customize the glass for the stairway. To meet code for a frameless stairway, a tempered laminated glass with an engineered interlayer was required.

RENDERINGS
Neoscape
Located in the already posh neighborhood of Beacon Hill, a boutique collection of 62 exquisitely designed one-to-four-bedroom condominium homes, dubbed The Archer Residences, is slated for completion in the Spring of 2020. Complete with underground valet parking, onsite fitness, 24/7 concierge, and a chic roof deck, the residences are a combination of two buildings (The Archer and The Donahue) both previously owned by Suffolk University – into one large residential building. The Archer, which was originally constructed in 1920, is being restored to maintain its original architectural character. The Donahue, a mid-century addition that was completed in 1966, will be scaled into a residential structure

with a new, detailed façade and ribbon windows that meld classic Beacon Hill architecture with a modern twist. Residents arrive through a new main entrance across from historic Temple Street Park that opens into a sophisticated lobby adorned with artwork curated by Boston Art, and a custom-made concierge desk with a bronze waterfall countertop. In addition to the landscaped roof terrace, other amenities include a club room with private dining space, a playroom, a pet spa and bicycle storage. Inside the units, LDa designed two separate styles for potential buyers, a contemporary design and a more transitional look. The contemporary kitchens are centered on a sleek marble waterfall island, with stained gray oak cabinetry and a minimal, sophisticated palette of gray and white tones with chrome accents. The transitional concept introduces warmer hues with walnut cabinetry, detailed millwork and copper hardware. As with the common areas, the interiors are designed to balance the historic sensibility of the renovated area of the buildings with the integrated new construction, showcasing the high ceilings and abundant natural light. Old world materials such as bronze, marble and oak were selected for their oldworld richness, but interpreted in modern applications creating a uniquely residential environment connected to the rich history and urban culture of the surrounding neighborhood. making a statement Interior Design: Barbara Elza Hirsch of Elza B Design, Inc

After purchasing a custom home built in the 90’s, a young family was challenged with modernizing the interiors while making their own personal statement in their new residence. They researched their options and landed on Interior Designer, Barbara Elza Hirsch after spotting her profile on Dering Hall. Hirsch was able to streamline and update the interiors by selecting and showcasing her unique design elements within each room. Whether a splash of color, a striking piece of furniture or a clever arrangement of a room’s components, Hirsch set out to grant the wish of her clients. Her placement of furniture, artwork and found objects make a bold statement as she visually steers the eye around the room with a thoughtful arrangement of color and design elements. She started with the kitchen, the lighting, carpeting and a total replacement of the home’s existing built-ins and shelving systems. All the kitchen lacquered white cabinets and drawers were updated with new custom bar pulls. A new sink, faucet, hot water dispenser was installed and appliances updated. Hirsch replaced bulky, dark, pink granite countertops and wood burning fireplace with a slimmer, custom designed modern fireplace to allow for more movement in the kitchen. She covered the fireplace wall in a light ceramic wood tile. Roman shades in a linen print give the kitchen a pop of color as does the landscape oil painting by Hirsch’s mother, Ghetta Hirsch. The dining room is a more formal space, as requested by the homeowner who wanted crystal chandeliers and more classical lines. The large oak farm table offers multiple seating options and can open up to accommodate numerous guests thanks to its additional leaves. An easy care indoor outdoor rug in a diamond pattern was introduced to offset stains with young children. A glass and brass plant table with pop and organic planters, continuing the natural theme in this room. Throughout the home, light fixtures were replaced and all

new custom cabinetry was designed by Hirsch and master carpenter, Ben Upton. A wall of cabinetry was introduced in the master bedroom with a custom banquette, while the music/playroom got a full wall of shelves and cabinets with backs painted in Sailcloth. In the living room, which the family uses as a family room, a wet bar and its symmetrical liquor cabinet were wallpapered with a zig zag pattern. The sliding doors can disappear inside the shelves when opened. Hirsch had the backs of the shelves painted in Sea Salt and then adorned them with interesting accessories and family heirlooms to give the built-in personality and make it into an accent wall. The music/playroom offers a whimsical environment to inspire play, music and art activities. Carpet tiles under the craft table make up the fun cow hide-like pattern and are replaceable in case of stains. Blue felt ottomans with removable trays face the sofa seating area reserved for parents as they interact with their children in the room. Yellow leather Moroccan poufs serve as extra seating for all. Fun cloud and sparrow decals displayed on the walls tell a story that transports and delights parents and children alike. The master bedroom hosts a plush, wool rug and patterned wallpapered accent the walls with lotus leaves in hues of lavender and grey. An opaque beaded chandelier contributes to the soft, romantic atmosphere in the bedroom. Hirsch added slight touches to the children’s bedrooms to enhance the dÊcor. These include fun wall decals, themed table lamps and bright colored hampers and bins, along with their bedding, a sequin canopy, drapes and area rugs.
No stone was left unturned and Hirsch left behind a statement in every room.

Out with the Old and in with the NeW A busy couple living a top a historic brownstone in Cambridge didn’t have time to interject their hectic professional lives, with home improvements but knew they were ready for a change. At the top of their to-do list were a kitchen and bathroom refresh. The kitchen, a small, enclosed utility space, featured dated tile flooring and backsplash and a cramped floor plan. The bathroom cried out for a new tub and a safer walk-in shower with bench seating. Elizabeth Tanny, a New York-based interior designer who is also the sister and sister-in-law of the homeowners, stepped in to help. She worked with the couple to select artwork and furniture, as well as paint colors. At the begining of the project, subtle changes stitched together the home’s living areas. Remodeler, Charlie Allen Renovation opened the wall between the kitchen and dining room, which had been mostly enclosed. The small kitchen had featured a traditional work triangle with refrigerator, stove, and a prep area along three separate walls. Unfortunately the room was too cramped for this particular layout. Instead, the stove and refrigerator were placed on the same wall, which allowed a larger opening to the dining room.
23
24
The overhanging cabinetry in the kitchen was kept in place but replaced with a new unit that housed separate cabinets facing both the kitchen and dining room for extra storage opportunities. With extra countertop at the sink, the half-wall, and on either side of the stove, the homeowners now have plenty of prep space. In favor of a crisp white palette, pearl Omega cabinets were a perfect compliment to the room. A mix of brushed nickel and glass knob pulls offer a visual variety. The countertops, were dressed in an elegant white Quartz Calacatta Novus with a sophisticated dark wave pattern. The backsplash is Feather Gray Manhattan Field Tile. Refinished and repainted moulding allows for a seamless flow among the living spaces. The dining and living rooms, were dressed in Benjamin Moore’s Edgecomb Gray. The tile flooring was removed from the kitchen in favor of restoring the original oak hardwoods, uniting both rooms with the rest of the condo. In the bathroom, the tub was replaced with a curbless walk-in shower and built-in marble bench seating. A Vintage Studio’s Starry White wall tile and Bianco Carrera honed floor tile were installed along a new vanity with a Cambria Queen Anne marble top and Robern medicine cabinet. The end result is as graceful, as it is refined.

“I’m thrilled to be taking the helm of New England Home and its family of titles, and getting to collaborate with a group of professionals who are just as passionate about all things home as I am,” Smith says. “Stretching from the Connecticut suburbs just north of New York City to the far reaches of Maine, the area is rich with a storied design history and a new, cosmopolitan vigor that holds an exciting future. That mix of 18th-century heritage and 21st-century verve is something the magazine will continue to champion and celebrate.”

ington Street in Boston’s South End in early March of this year. Known for their distinctly sophisticated collection of furniture, decorative accessories, rugs, tabletop and other ‘objects of desire’, Artefact is northern New England’s premier destination for the innovative Verellen furniture line. Renowned designer Tom Verellen has created a line of furniture with an haute couture level of attention to detail. The styles are at once both modern and timeless. Bench made in the USA by highly skilled craftsmen, the Verellen offerings include upholstered pieces, case goods and lighting. Artefact’s Boston shop, with over 2,000 square feet allows space to showcase even more of these sought-after handcrafted pieces. “We are excited to expand our partnership with Artefact Home as they open a second shop in the Boston-Metropolitan area,” says Tom Verellen. “Maureen and Sue effortlessly interpret and execute our vision. I am thrilled to have them be a part of our brand and tell our story to the New England market.” In addition to the expanded Verellen line, the new shop will feature an exciting collection of tabletop and decorative accessories, gifts and carefully curated pieces from local artisans and artisans from around the globe. “Our Belmont shop has a loyal following, but we realize it may not be as convenient for our Boston-based and south shore customers and trade partners,” states Sue Walsh. “A second location in the city just makes sense and also gives us a greater opportunity to introduce more of the Verellen line.”
