It was a great privilege to be surrounded by such committed members of our design community for our 2017 IFDA New England Take A Seat series of events!! I would especially like to thank our members, annual and event sponsors and chair designers for their fantastic support of not only IFDA New England, but the wonderful charities that this year’s auction supported: Friends of the Children - Boston, The Lyceum Fellowship and the Women’s Institute for Housing and Economic Development. Our fall line-up of events starts in September at Wolfers in Allston. October is our annual Design Showcase, hosting vendors at Landry and Arcari at their Framingham location. Poggenpohl will be hosting the November event, followed by our Holiday Party, this year at Wink and Nod in Boston. Stay tuned for event evites!
LETTER FROM THE
PRESIDENT
If you are not a member of IFDA NE, please consider becoming a member. New England is the largest of all the 14 IFDA chapters. If you are a member, consider serving on one of our committees or on our board of directors, and /or becoming an annual or event sponsor. There are currently opportunities in all of these areas and I encourage your involvement, at the end of the day this is your IFDA. Please contact me or any one of our board members, if you have questions about IFDA New England! I think our vision statement succinctly describes the benefits of membership: IFDA-NE provides opportunities to cultivate strong business relationships through professionalism, education, collaboration, and philanthropy. Thanks very much

d e s i g n Detail from “South Sea”, Tibetan woven carpet from Chiara’s design, available at Landry & Arcari, Boston. Also sold as an art tapestry.
Chiara Romano Van Erp began designing carpets while studying Architecture in Italy. In 1980 she moved to the United States, where she has her own interior architecture firm. A lifelong familiarity and love with the art and architectural treasures of her native country, her artistic education and her own paintings have been the inspiration for her carpet collection. Schumacher, Saxony, Asmara and Tisca Italia have purchased her designs to create exquisite tufted and needlepoint rugs. Her work has been published in major design magazines in the United States and Italy. Installations of her carpets include: New England Life in Boston, Sonesta Hotel in Curaçao, NA, Brown University in Providence, RI as well as residences around the world. She recently designed a collection of custom rugs with a summer coastal flair which is made and sold by Landry & Arcari. (Hand woven in Nepal in Tibetan weave in wool and silk.)

This year’s Fifth International Annual Event once again highlighed the work of area design professionals and their contributions to the community. Architects, builders, craftsmen, designers and students either up-cycled a chair or crafted a new chair from repurposed materials to benefit three select charitable organizations: Friends of the
Children - Boston; Women’s Institute for Housing and Economic Development and the Lyceum Fellowship. These charitable organizations were selected by our Diamond Sponsors: F.H. Perry Builder, Hutker Architects and our own International Furnishings and Design Association of New England.

2017's "TAKE A SEAT" empowered the design community to benefit area charitable causes through creative contributions and monetary donations. On June 1, 2017, the Take A Seat series of events ended with an unforgettable gala that raised funds through auction packages and 23 one-of-a-kind chairs created by talented professionals throughout New England. Because of the contributions of the design community, IFDA-New England successfully raised $22,950 for these charities. The Women’s Institute for Housing

No matter the time of year, a crackling fire is an opulent addition to any alfresco gathering. Whether it’s a campstyle fire pit or a stone fireplace and chimney like this one designed by Hutker Architects and built by Sea-Dar Construction, adding an outdoor heating source will keep dinner and drinks going even after the thermostat dips.

The great outdoors From colorfully modern to tastefully rustic, outdoor spaces showcase the best of summer living. Over the past 26 years, Sea-Dar Construction has erected numerous outdoor gathering spaces. In New England, warm weather calls for outdoor entertainment from midsummer night low-key dinners to impromptu cocktail parties by the pool. In these instances, the right space can make all the difference between a celebration that is sub-par or sizzles. After all, wide open spaces can take away from an intimate gathering or tight areas can inhibit movement, hinder conversation, and make hosting cumbersome. That is decidedly not the case with these inventive setups built by Sea-Dar Construction, which are as practical as they are inviting. With warmer temps comes the urge to spend every minute in outdoor rooms. A loveseat strewn with colorful pillows and cushions, an openair lounge nestled along the bay or multiple
balconies
that
give
way to both cozy and relaxing vignettes in which to engage: these offer more than just seating options—they make shrewd use of space, and are conversation starters in their own right. Photography by Eric Roth

This loggia designed by LDa Architecture and built by Sea-Dar Construction, offers a perfect place to unwind next to the pool, dine alfresco, or take in the surrounding landscape. New York Interior Designer, Vivian Hedges blends the space with its natural environment by strewning neutral colored pillows and cushions to accent the wicker furniture, stone fireplace and wooden wetbar.

This spectacular rooftop terrace designed by StudioDykas is an urban oasis and the perfect retreat from city life. SeaDar constructed the veranda with planters full of flowering mock orange, boxwood, ivy, and pine surrounding the stone-paved terrace, floating steps and jacuzzi.

- A PATIO RIPE FOR A SUMMER SOIRÉE Whether it’s a buttery croissant as the sun rises or a gourmet feast under the stars, one of the joys of summer is sharing a meal in the great outdoors. Architect, Peter Breese designed this ocean facing patio as one of many intimate gathering spaces for family members. Interior Designer, Ann Gallagher of SpringHill Design added the finishing touches. Photography by Greg Premru
Bois et Couleur collection Translated from french, the Wood and Color Collection is comprised of pieces influenced by art, fashion, history and the designer’s French background, incorporating the highest quality hardwood materials with fabrics in bold, fresh colors and patterns. Barbara Elza Hirsch, award-winning interior designer and principal of Elza B. Design, Inc. along with Dowel Furniture recently launched the Bois et Couleur Furniture Collection. After a successful debut at 2017 Boston Design Week, the collection’s official launch was hosted on May 31, 2017 at the Boston Design Center. “I am thrilled to have this opportunity to design a vibrant furniture collection that will appeal to homeowners, apartment dwellers, and designers looking for well-built, stylish chairs, stools, and accent tables,” says Barbara Elza Hirsch.
Durable frames and easy-to-clean fabrics make each piece as functional as it is beautiful. The furnishings feature sturdy, solid wood frames available in five Sherwin Williams colors, two natural white oak finishes, and a chic selection of fabrics from the notable showrooms of Schumacher, Romo Group, Quadrille, Kravet Fabrics, Robert Allen, Duralee, Webster & Company, The Martin Group, and Studio 534.
23
As a French native currently based in Concord, Massachusetts, Hirsch has developed a sensibility that is strongly rooted in both of her home countries. “Bois et Couleur has an ‘old world-meets-new-world’ style,” she explains. “The goal was to create a personalized collection that showcases Dowel’s intricate wood design capabilities, blended with my own design background and cultural experiences.” Hirsch’s objective is realized in the well-rounded collection comprised of two chic dining chairs and their corresponding armchairs; a statement-making living room armchair with accompanying ottoman; three end tables that also serve as nightstands; and two versatile counter stools. La Parisienne dining chair, inspired by the city’s centuries-old architecture, is named in honor of Hirsch’s years spent studying graphic design and art in Paris’s foremost studios, while the Frenchie dining chair is reminiscent of a slower paced life in her grandparents’ homes in Burgundy and the Lyon area where dining was an hours-long experience.
Royale, a regal living room armchair, is a spirited tribute to France’s royal history and to Hirsch’s grandmother’s love of gilded and ornate details. A small ottoman, the Casablanca, incorporates hints of Hirsch’s Moroccan heritage and pairs perfectly with the Royale. Also available as a chic, compact pouf, the Casablanca can be used as a fun extra seat to tuck near the fireplace or in front of a sofa.
25
The end tables answer a market need for simple, versatile tables that can be used in differently styled rooms as end tables or night stands. As durable and sturdy as they are stylish, “these tables offer proportions that are lacking in the current marketplace, and they are able to support the variety of dramatic large-scale lamps available now, says Hirsch. The Elza wood end table has two shelves and is offered in five color options. It is obtainable in two different heights and leg systems. The Marrakesh is a similarly built side table but with either gold or iron color nail head design on two sides and a metal frame in a matching finish. The Bastille stool is an upholstered seat that fits a modern kitchen, beautifully updated to fit an open-plan space while retaining hints of Old World timelessness. The Cocktail is an elegant backless stool that offers colorful wood bases and an array of fabric options for its square tufted seats. Produced by Dowel Furniture, internationally recognized for its stylish, built-to-last furnishings, The Bois et Couleur Collection is available online at https://www.dowel.furniture.

IFDA New England member Cutting Edge Homes recently won a Silver CotY Award for a whole house renovation project in Newton which incorporated a 16’ x 36’ single story addition with complete interior and exterior upgrades, including the kitchen, bathrooms, mechanical systems, siding, roofing, trim, and windows. The clients desired a more substantial front entrance, while seamlessly blending with the character of their neighborhood; this was accomplished by adding a 10’ x 6’ front portico, a new front door, and removing the “Garrison” of the colonial. The clients have lived in the home for thirty years. Rather than move, they decided on a renovation that increased entertainment space and added an abundance of natural light. A custom Bluestone patio connects interior to exterior to highlight the natural light and encourage the flow of indoor and outdoor entertaining. Cutting Edge Homes’ meticulous attention to detail ensured that every cubic foot of the 2,200 square foot home was utilized in an organized and efficient manner.
