USAID West Africa Fertilizer Program Grants Component The U.S. Agency for International Development’s West Africa Fertilizer Program seeks to significantly increase food security and reduce poverty and hunger in West Africa. The USAID West Africa Fertilizer Program will increase the regional availability of appropriate and affordable fertilizers through: increased regional supply and distribution of fertilizers by the private sector; increased use of improved fertilizers; improved efficiency of regional market transactions; and an improved enabling environment for fertilizer policy and regulatory framework development. This five-year program, implemented by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC), will have an impact across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region. Purpose – To increase the regional availability and use of appropriate and affordable fertilizer to improve agricultural productivity in a sustainable way. Target Beneficiaries – The grants are meant for actors along the targeted agricultural value chains (rice, maize, vegetables, cocoa and cotton). Stakeholders include producers, agro-input dealers, agricultural enterprises, private sector actors involved in fertilizer production, blending and distribution, warehousing, storage, market information, fertilizer recommendations, mapping, soil analysis, policy, packaging, fertilizer quality control and research institutions/laboratories, as well as governments and regulatory bodies. How It Works – Explain your idea/need through a Concept Note (2 pages max.) which includes: o o

A budget A technical narrative that outlines the: i) Objectives, Basics and Strategy; ii) Beneficiary Population and Geographic Range of the Program; iii) Development Plan and Activity Description; iv) Expected Impact; v) Technical/Administrative Capabilities in Proposed Work Area; vi) Environmental Implications.


Recipients will contribute from their own resources or other non-grant resources over a predetermined percentage of the total activity budget. This contribution may be met through costsharing, co-funding, or some combination of the two. Where It Is Implemented – Ghana, Liberia, Mali and Senegal Timelines – Grant is conceding over a one year period. In all USAID West Africa Fertilizer Program interventions, there is a commitment to gender equity and to mitigating adverse environmental effects. ###
