USAID West Africa Fertilizer Program Providing Market Information on Fertilizers Inadequate market information and linkages result in higher prices paid by fertilizer importers, distributors, agro-dealers and farmers. These factors also reduce the ability of importers to accurately determine future market demands to take advantage of economies of scale. The USAID West Africa Fertilzer Program will collaborate with its local partners, with RESIMAO (the regional market information network) and with the AfricaFertilizer.org partners (IFDC, AFAP, FAO, AU/NEPAD and IFA) to make fertilizer market information available through quarterly newsletters, websites, social media and mobile phones to both the upstream and downstream fertilizer industry stakeholders. Monitor and distribute fertilizer price information – The USAID West Africa Fertilizer Program will provide international and local retail prices of fertilizers on a monthly basis in conjunction with the MIR+ project, RESIMAO and AfricaFertilizer.org. FOB and CIF prices for key fertilizers in major ports and landing points in the Program focus countries will be published on a quarterly basis. Fertilizer statistics and analysis – Annual fertilizer statistics (production, imports, exports, consumption and fertilizer use by crop) in the Program focus countries will be compiled and published in collaboration with FAO’s Country STAT and its Fertilizer Technical Working Groups.
Map of fertilizer production and blending capacities – In 2013, production, granulation, blending, bagging and warehousing facilities and capacities in West Africa will be listed, georeferenced and mapped. They will then be made available online and in printed directories. Fertilizer Market Intelligence – Fertilizer policies and regulations, applicable taxes and tariffs and other relevant fertilizer policy indicators will be compiled in collaboration with the NEPAD Fertilizer Programme. The Program will also compile and update as necessary key fertilizer market intelligence in focus countries, including: fertilizer market news and publications; fertilizer products and recommendations; and directories of fertilizer producers, manufacturers, importers and agro–dealers. In all USAID West Africa Fertilizer Program interventions, there is a commitment to gender equity and to mitigating adverse environmental effects.
