IFMSA International For more than 60 years, IFMSA has existed and been led by medical students worldwide. The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) was founded in 1951. It is the world’s oldest and largest independent organization representing associations of medical students internationally. It currently maintains 127 National Member Organizations from more than 119 countries across six continents with over 1.2 million students represented worldwide. IFMSA is recognized as a non-governmental organization within the United Nations’ system and the World Health Organization and as well, it works with the World Medical Association.
- Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH): Works towards ensuring a healthy global society that is empowered through its knowledge, skills and opportunities to live a life of complete physical, mental and social well-being.
The Executive Board governs the organization, the liaison officers build external relations, and the standing committees, initiatives, support divisions and regions lead the programming of the organization. The national member organizations (NMOs) are the official decision making body, where members from each national member organization meet bi-annually to vote on IFMSA’s policies and elect the team of officials.
- Standing Committee on Research Exchange (SCORE): to develop both culturally sensitive students and skilled researchers intent on shaping the world of science in the upcoming future.
IFMSA was created to impact the world and to empower its members in taking their vision and ideas, and making them a reality. IFMSA has inspired generations of medical students to develop the leadership abilities and skills to take on challenges and to improve the world around them in a crucial period of their career. Engaging in IFMSA encourages both professional and personal collaborations irrespective of geographical, social, cultural, religious, racial, sexual and political differences. As a result, future doctors are becoming more culturally aware and sensitive physicians. “A world in which all medical students unite for global health and are equipped with the knowledge, skills and values to take on health leadership roles locally and globally” is the global vision of IFMSA, and this vision is carried out through six standing committees:
- Standing Committee on Professional Exchange (SCOPE): promotes the cultural understanding and the cooperation among medical students and other health professionals, through international exchanges.
- Standing Committee on Human Rights and Peace (SCORP): To educate students and professionals in the health care system about refugees, internally displaced people’s and other vulnerable populations’ health. - Standing Committee on Medical Education (SCOME): to implement an optimal learning environment for all medical students around the world and promote modern medical education. IFMSA unites medical students worldwide to lead initiatives that impact positively the communities we serve. And, IFMSA represents the opinions and ideas of future health professionals in the field of global health, and works in collaboration with external partners.t
- Standing Committee on Reproductive Health including Aids (SCORA): Within SCORA, medical students from all over the world work on issues concerning Reproductive and Sexual health, Whether that be through advocacy work, projects, or through peer education.

IFMSA Jordan It was 2006 when the Jordanian National Member Organization joined the IFMSA global entity. Ever since then, IFMSA-Jordan has committed to the service of our community through public health and medical awareness campaigns, serving orphans, the elderly and even tending to the environment. In addition, there is a focus on students in different schools of medicine in Jordan guiding them to a path of community contribution and voluntarism through several projects and campaigns that are based on honesty, transparency and mutual respect. The local committees of IFMSA-Jordan are currently well established at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, University of Jordan, Hashemite University, Yarmouk University and Mutah University, and involve more than 5000 medical students. All of the five aforementioned committees are active in IFMSA-Jordan with a major focus on students, awareness campaigns, international exchange programs, conferences, workshops and assemblies. The goal of IFMSA-Jordan is to serve the society and medical students in Jordan by empowering its members in using their knowledge and capacities for the benefit of society, and providing a link between members, medical students’ associations and international organizations to encourage the cooperation between them for the ultimate establishment of a well-educated community. The IFMSA community creates a pool of ideas, opinions and beliefs that are discussed, evaluated and exchanged, thus enhancing the overall skills of its members to better serve the healthcare system of Jordan. IFMSA-Jordan makes sure to achieve these goals without political, religious, social, racial, national or any other form of discrimination. We aim to promote humanitarian ideals among medical students which will contribute to the creation of responsible future physicians. All members of IFMSA-Jordan are provided with the opportunity to discover the world of IFMSA and medicine from endless exchange and research programs that guarantee exposure to different cultures and societies, to promoting and facilitating professional and scientific exchanges that enhances medical knowledge and expands clinic al concepts. Also, our members have the chance to represent Jordan through attending the global biannual general assemblies of IFMSA which are considered a cocktail of cultures and resemble the dynamics of the modern world. IFMSA-JO President
Muthanna Al-Abbadi My Dear Family, I am truly honored to be serving our dear federation after 10 years since its foundation. Throughout the past years, this great organization has united medical students in our beloved Jordan, from the Bride of the North to the Castle of the South. This organization has united us on one objective, which is to serve society and medical students in Jordan.
Message from the President I am writing this message filled with pride of all that we have achieved together, and confident of all the great accomplishments that we will do. So hand in hand, let us leave our fingerprints on a better world. Best of luck in all of your endeavors, and I hope to see you all very soon.
“Help others without any reason, and give without the expectation of receiving anything in return” We have chosen a noble profession to practice, and this organization gives us the opportunity as medical students to contribute in the health development and improvement within our local community through its various standing committees, whether it is public health, sexual and reproductive health, human rights and peace, medical education, and finally, professional and research exchange. Looking back on the last 10 years, IFMSA-Jo has developed immensely by the hands of YOU, members. With more than 5000 members in this family from 5 different universities, we are now stronger than ever, and capable of working harder for our mission and vision. Internationally, IFMSA-Jo has proved to be a huge contributor to the work of IFMSA, and especially in our region. We are now more involved with many IFMSA-Jo members taking part in international assemblies, teams and activities, and bringing all the experience back to Jordan. All of that is representing one of IFMSA’s main mottos: Think Global, Act Local. This term, we promise you a new era for our beloved organization. With the Te am of Officials working around the clock to bring the better change needed for this foundation through reforming our structure and setting up the strategic plan for the next 3 years.

So, allow me to thank each and every person who made this magazine possible.
Dearest IFMSA-Jordan, It is my utmost pleasure to present to you a small document that showcases all the hard work you have all put into this organization. Our very first magazine was printed in March 2015, and I am delighted to say that our team is growing stronger and more established. In continuance with what Ramez Halaseh and Zakaria Shkoukani started two years ago, we at the Publications Support Division aim to carry this team to represent IFMSA-Jo both on paper and online, from our Facebook page to this publication. ‘Impacts’ focuses on accidents in general, and car accidents in specific, in consistence with the theme for the 11th National General Assembly. Medical students from five different universities have come together to explain to you both the physical and the mental consequences of different scenarios that we encounter everyday. You will also find articles about projects and campaigns that all of you, delegates, have been working on. It’s also the first time we come close to Executive Board members of Local Committees and National Officers to discuss their visions for IFMSA-Jo. This collaboration would not have been made possible without our wonderful writers, IFMSA-Jo supporters, and most importantly, the amazing Publications Support Division team who went above and beyond to produce yet another amazing edition of the IFMSA-Jo magazine.

Message from IFMSA International Team of Officials Dear Medical Students of Jordan, “Real generosity towards the future lies in giving all to the present” - Albert Gamus IFMSA is an organization committed to uniting our members and empowering them with the skills to become powerful contributors to Global Health, encouraging them to value cultural diversity and lead initiatives that impact positively on the communities they serve. IFMSA-Jo has always been an NMO which has unfailingly embodied that vision and mission. We are truly honored to share this page with you and convey our deepest appreciation for all the work you have done over the years. It seemed only yesterday to us, that the IFMSA TO was able to visit you in the EMR 12. In the process, we got to know your growth as an NMO and got to know the members who have contributed so strongly to your work, both nationally and internationally. We acknowledge the immense amount of courage and effort it must have taken to write and build a publication like this. We have all been there: the struggle to frame your ideas, design them to ensure the message we want to convey gets across perfectly, and build a publication to reflect the heart and soul that has been poured not only onto the pages of the book, but also in the initiatives contained in it. The relief everyone must have felt when submitting the documents and afterwards, when the publication itself is being launched must be immense. These all sum up the strength and bravery demanded in creating a safe space within this difficult world for new ideas to blossom.

We are grateful to you, because this is a space we believe promotes tolerance and respect amongst medical students. In a world where one group is stigmatized and another is judged by virtue of their culture, this medium is a clear answer to the many human right transgressions we see today, for it is only by truly accepting others’ visions that we can nurture the unity and compassion we need to make a change in the world. Please remember IFMSA has always been, and will always be an open door to all of you. A place to speak up freely and a place where every idea is valued. We look forward to the continuity and impact the projects in this publication will have, as well as the potential they contain to inspire more people to do the same. This publication means a lot to us, not only because it shows the effort from an entire body of motivated students but also because we and the world can now see that Jordan is in the safe hands of passionate and critical thinking future healthcare providers who are ready to make a change where they believe it necessary. It shows an entity that will breath in knowledge and breath out change. A medical student body that is making history. Best regards from your TO

Muna Rommaneh A few months ago, the year 2017 started. People were filled with excitement and hope as they were counting down the remaining seconds of 2016 on New Year's Eve. They were looking forward to a brand new opportunity, to starting over, and to new beginnings. Has it ever crossed your mind that many of those people were drug users who were seeking a chance to stop? Drug addiction is a problem that has been increasing immensely among our society, and across the world. Drug addictions have been hindering and restraining the users from accomplishing goals and dreams for a long time now. Though people usually feel they are too powerful and too in control to become addicts, addiction can still trap them. Once trapped, addiction can lead to harming one's body and causing problems in family structure. It can also contribute to the delinquency in society. Addiction is a brain disease that is indicated by compulsive drug-seeking behavior. Without a doubt, an addict may spend an exorbitant amount of time obsessing over different things such as obtaining their drug of choice, using it, and recovering from its effects. Little do they know; drugs contribute significantly to the risk of accidents. Needless to say, it also impacts judgment, perception, reaction times and problem solving skills. Drugs alter brain chemistry in a way that impairs cognitive and physical abilities. In many cases, drugs may increase incidents of sexual assault, domestic violence, hostility, and aggression, leading to injuries or even death. Children of substance-abusing parents were almost three times likelier to be abused and more than four times likelier to be

There are many contributions that lead to accidents such as inattention, lack of concentration, over confidence, laziness and fearlessness. These factors can contribute to an increase in the risk of being involved in an accident or even causing one. Accidents are avoidable, that is a fact. However, they are only avoided if circumstances contributing to the accident had been acknowledged and stopped prior to the horrific event. Involvement in an accident can cause serious injury and death in some cases, both to the person causing the incident or to those around the accident. Accidents can be serious as explained in the previous point or can be mild causing a loss of a business or a potentially harmful situation. Operating heavy machinery while under the influence of drugs is very dangerous. Many prescription drugs, including those prescribed for anxiety or sleep disorders, come with warnings against the operation of machinery for a specified period of time after use. This means that when a prescription drug is abused, the rate of impaired driving and other harmful reactions increases significantly. One of the most significant areas of risk with the use of drugs is the connection between drugs, accidents and crime. Drug abuse and car accidents are a regular occurrence. Unfortunately, traffic accident fatalities involving marijuana have tripled in recent years. Our youth is the future of this world. Sadly, this is not the case when drugged driving is the number one cause of death, injury and disability of young people under the age of 21. Accidents and injuries in general increase with drug abuse. The relationship between drugs and crime is complex where serious drug use can amplify and perpetuate preexisting criminal activity. At the most intense levels of drug use, drugs and crime are directly and highly correlated. Drug-related crime and violence may occur while attempting to obtain the drugs as well.

Muna Rommaneh Many drugs may induce aggression and potentially hostile behavior, while other drugs may lead to more hostility after the drug leaves the bloodstream during withdrawal. Scientifically speaking, driving under the influence of stimulants is generally safe when the drugs are taken alone and in regular doses as in medicinal use. However, stimulant drugs are less safe when taken in combination with sleep loss or alcohol intoxication, as is often the case in recreational drug users. Drugs may also exacerbate any underlying mental health disorders causing wild mood swings or depressive episodes leading to an increase in the risk for suicidal behavior. People who abuse substances may be as much as six times more likely to commit suicide than their peers who do not. The problem only gets worse when the abuser was already suffering from mental illness since mental illness and substance abuse both increase the risk for suicidal behavior.
Up with Hope; Down with Dope. Drugs may cause workers to be less concerned or aware of their safety or the safety of their co-workers, have poor concentration, be less productive or effective, or make careless errors that may lead to injuries on the job. The sooner people seek help for drug addiction problems, the more chances they have of gaining control of their life once again. Always keep in mind that drug use is in fact life abuse.
Treatment offers the best alternative for interrupting the criminal justice cycle for offenders with drug problems. Research has shown that people can recover from addiction after treatment, and maintain abstinence from drugs. Research has also shown that as substance abuse declines, so does criminal behavior. Many addicts do not seek help because of the stigma and the fear of law enforcement. This is why we should view addiction as an illness and a medical model. Many people who are under the influence of drugs do not consider the consequences of their actions and behaviors on others, which can place other people at risk of accidents. A work-related accident is most likely to occur with employees who abuse illegal drugs during their working hours. IFMSA - Jordan Magazine (March 17' Edition)

Jordan University of Science and Technology Local Committee
JUST LC JUST-LC joined in 2006 as the first Local Committee. We now proudly have 1968 members and counting!
What were the main goals for your LC the previous? This past year one of our goals was building future leaders that have the skills and confidence to lead the organization for the following years.
Would you recommend members to apply for EB positions in IFMSA? What are the qualities that an IFMSAian should have to become an EB member? Of course we recommend it and we encourage any member to do it. It’s an amazing experience but at the same time it’s a great responsibility. An executive board member must always keep in mind that he/she is working for the members of the Local Committee, so should always put their best interest first. They must also be open to criticism, flexible, strong-willed and aspire to alleviate the standards for the Local Committee.
What do you think attracts students to join IFMSA? IFMSA opens a lot of doors to medical students and most of us are attracted to the life it gives us: the life of volunteering, international opportunities, the social life and most importantly, the family-like atmosphere that reminds you that you’re not alone and you have a lot of friends who have your back. It also gives a sense of responsibility that you are an active member of society and your voice is heard and influential.

Faris Haddad It's quite impressive how the more we repeat something, the less we focus on it -like driving. When we first get our license, we drive with great caution, give way even when we have priority and have a constant paranoia of the worst. With time we manage to calm down, we grow more confident, and at some point some of us would get so accustomed to driving to our place of work or study, or even play that we don't even feel the need to use a huge conscious effort. Make no mistake it's indeed impressive, but erroneous nonetheless. An error that has the potential of being fatal. So maybe, our initial paranoia wasn’t misplaced after all. With driving and road being a central part of our lives and them being the stages of the aforementioned "worst", it would be wise to find out what transports the fear from paranoia to reality. As the stage of the tragedy, roads may contribute to accidents. Jordan’s roads could be considered to be in “decent” condition, at least according to the world economic forum 2015 GCI report, but that doesn’t seem to make a difference when it comes to traffic accident fatalities.
That doesn’t mean that roads aren’t a contributing factor; this study assesses the quality as in the smoothness and usability, meaning constantly paving roads doesn’t necessarily make them safer. The problem with roads are potholes and dents, these cause cars to lose balance which inevitably causes collisions. Over paving of

Cause and Counter roads (without properly scraping them beforehand) only deepens the potholes which has the unintended consequence of making the problem worse, thus we conclude that road works on decent roads are not doing anyone a favor. When someone is given a driving license they are entrusted with a great deal of responsibility, but that must be reinforced with a fair amount of oversight. It’s highly debatable whether we have that here. As far as traffic law in Jordan is concerned, it’s satisfactory to have the driver wear his/her seatbelt. According to a report by the WHO, Jordan doesn’t mandate all passengers to wear seatbelts, has the urban speed limit above 50 km/h, no regular checkups on safety standards are scheduled and there is little oversight on customization workshops, which leaves a lot of room for error. That was not an attempt to relieve the general populous of blame, of course, since exploring the many facets of an issue is not an excuse for one side’s recklessness and irresponsibility, which is the leading cause of accidents. Pedestrians, for example, find it too tiring to use zebra crossings or bridges, and choose a river of speeding metal boxes as the better path to their destination. But drivers also have been too comfortable to focus on the road, and the risks of running a red light or smoking while driving have not been fully ingrained by training. In fact, the theoretical part of drivers training has received a reputation of being dismissible thus people don’t focus on it or take it seriously, which leads to its contents getting disregarded or forgotten quickly. It’s not taboo to text while driving, and drifting is a celebrated skill. There is also a general distrust in the system which leaves people more prone to rebel. Furthermore, we can’t get around without our own car, which is a problem in and of itself. Driving a car is the be-all and end-all of transportation; once you have access to one, you ditch all other modes of transport. It also doesn’t help that while cars have become more accessible, the public transport system hasn’t been keeping up; Chart 2 shows the number of vehicles in Jordan through the years 2013-2010. cont'd... www.ifmsa-jo.org

As you can see the change in public transportation has been unnoticeable compared to private vehicles, but the rate of change doesn’t fare better. Observe Chart 3.
Cause and Counter number of drivers, which decreases the number of cars on the road and in result, statistically, there will be fewer road traffic accidents. Traffic accidents are a leading cause of death in the Middle East. Jordan, as a matter of fact, has the highest rate in the region and the 2nd highest in the Arab World, second only to Libya. To address this problem, we need better enforced safety laws, a more robust training system, and public accountability. There is nothing wrong in calling out people for their recklessness. However, all the data above is potentially flawed and must be taken with a grain of salt, so how about we conduct further research to convince even more people to take action because it’s much easier to deal with anything when you know why you have to deal with it in the first place.
Although the growth rate for both private and public vehicles has dropped, private cars still have a greater growth rate. All of this has an effect on road accidents of course. A reliable, convenient, well-managed transport system can save lives; a 2012 study in Guadalajara found that private cars are involved in %99 of traffic accidents in the city, so having the growth rate of the transport fleet decrease is not a welcomed progression. Doubly so when you consider that the public’s biggest concerns regarding public transportation are its inconvenience, lack of adherence to a proper schedule, inconsistent frequency of bus stops, the fact that the system doesn’t cover all areas equally and the observation that women, especially in our country, tend to agree with the phrase “public transportation and taxis aren’t a comfortable environment”. By providing a reliable transport system with greater availability, it is possible to decrease the

Qutaibah Sabha Tell us a little about yourself. My name is Qutaibah Sabha. I graduated from JUST School of Medicine in 2015. Currently, I am a first year internal medicine transitional resident at King Hussein Cancer Center and planning to pursue residency in the USA. I have been an active member in IFMSA-Jo since 2012. I have organized and participated in numerous projects, meetings, and trainings on the local, national, and international levels that spanned most of the standing committees. I served as the National Vice President on Internal Affairs in the term 2016-2015 and had held the same position at the local level in JUST LC beforehand. I also served as the chairperson of both NGA 8 and 10.
What was your best memory in IFMSA-Jo?
Having IFMSA-Jo as an integral part of my life for a long time, I have a lot of great memories related to it. That's why, it is very hard for me to pinpoint a single one as best. Meanwhile, the first thing that popped into my head when asked the question was the moment when IFMSA-Jo won the hosting of IFMSA's 12th Eastern Mediterranean Regional Meeting (EMR 12). Back then, we, the national EB and the head of OC of the proposed EMR 12, had been working so hard to make our hosting bid as presentable and attractive as possible. At that time, I and Mohammad Hamidi, the president of IFMSA-Jo at the time, co-presented the hosting proposal in the rEMR 11 presidents' session. The result was announced in the closing ceremony of EMR 11 and it was a very special and emotional moment for me and the whole EMR 11 IFMSA-Jo delegation and I felt that the tiredness faded away in a glimpse of an eye. IFMSA-Jo Alumnus: Qutaibah Sabha How do you think IFMSA-Jo have changed you? My university experience would have never been the same without IFMSA. It offered me a wide range of experiences that helped me master a diverse set of personal skills including managerial, organizational, communication, and leadership skills. I also became more culturally-sensitive as I have met a lot of people from all around the world. In my opinion, IFMSA-Jo has broadened my horizons and has helped me reach the limits of my potential.
How can you still contribute to IFMSA-Jo now that you're an alumnus? I think the alumni can play a crucial role in developing the institutional memory of IFMSA-Jo as they can deliver their gained experiences to the newer generations through trainings, workshops, and meetings. By doing that, they ensure that the experiences are not lost between generations. Consequently, the newer generation can start with a more developed ground to build on and acquire even more knowledge. Also, the professional net that the alumni develop over the years can help IFMSA-Jo in finding new opportunities for fundraising and co-operation. I believe the key factor of contribution is to maintain channels of communication between alumni and the leadership of IFMSA-Jo and to realize the potentials that each alumnus can offer according to his/her resources.

Jude Qteish Sirens were getting louder and louder, we all freaked out and went outside to see what’s happening, the red color of our car was enough to make my heart beat rapidly, my dad’s blood-covered head was enough to make me feel like someone is ripping my heart away, like all the blood was inside my head, I couldn’t feel or see anymore, my head became so heavy and I just couldn’t bear the pain, I couldn’t bear being so helpless, so numb! Most car accidents are non-fatal. Nevertheless, their consequences can be devastating. Emotional injuries are more likely to happen to passengers, pedestrians and even observers as well. According to statistics, %33 - %25 of individuals involved in a crash that resulted in a referral to a hospital experience situational fear of driving afterwards which consequently affect their quality of life tremendously. Being involved in an accident, doctors focus on physical recovery (i.e. treatment in a hospital). However, the tricky side is psychological recovery. which starts with recognizing the three cardinal psychological symptoms of the crash. Namely anxiety, depression and phobias; including but not specific to, worrying, feeling irritable, unable to relax or sleep properly, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, feeling upset, angry, confused, tired, helpless and/or ‘out-of-control’. Car accidents may also leave you unsociable and isolated, which can severely affect your daily life. The latest study by British researchers suggests that at least one-third of all people involved in nonfatal accidents have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), persistent anxiety, depression, and phobias one year after the incident. IFMSA - Jordan Magazine (March 17 ' Edition)

The Other Side of an Accident
Recovery lies in recognizing the problems which need to be addressed. As a rule, one should seek help from someone qualified in treating PTSD, if two or three months have passed and one still feels anxious, avoids certain driving situations, has persistent thoughts or dreams about the accident. Finally, we need to understand the importance of being healed properly. This includes mental healing as well as physical healing. These feelings are a valid aspect of our reactions but, it doesn’t mean that they don’t get out of control. There is no “right” or “wrong” way to think, feel, or respond to an accident. Then again, it is important to identify a behavior that needs professional help. Sometimes, all you really need is someone to talk to, and other times, you may need psychotherapy. Drive safe!

MU LC In September 2014, NGA 6 MULC became a full member of IFMSA-Jo and our family currently has over 1000 members that we're working so hard for. This term, we’re working on elevating our level of professionalism through improving our databases, documentation processes and making members more motivated by working hand-in-hand with the local officers to make sure that our members are equipped with the tools to inflict change. As medical students, we constantly endeavour to make a difference, communicate and connect with other medical students, but having IFMSA as a platinum platform to actually do that, is what we think makes students interested in IFMSA's work. To all our members considering becoming Eb members, we dedicate this quote by Summer Sanders to you: "To be a champion, I think you have to see the big picture. It's not about winning and losing; it's about every day hard work and about thriving on a challenge. It's about embracing the pain that you'll experience at the end of a race and not being afraid. I think people think too hard and get afraid of a certain challenge. " It's a challenge but it's worth it.

The use of the very latest therapies and medical equipment helps to guarantee an exceptionally high level of care. Increasing digitization is opening up new possibilities for medical care, as X-ray images and medical reports are available faster. A dense network of clinics and doctors' surgeries ensures that patients get the medical services they need rapidly. At the same time, doctors and nurses are held in great esteem by the German population.

Language Generation Center Why can the German language help you in your career as a physician? In his essay “The Awful German Language”, Mark Twain describes the German language as “so slipshod and systemless, and so slippery and elusive to the grasp.” He says “a person who has not studied German can form no idea of what a perplexing language it is“. So, if this is really the case, why on earth would anyone still want to learn German?
In other words, there has to be a real reason why so many doctors at our Language Center in Amman decide to get on board the German language! Obviously, they have convincing explanations for their choice: for them, learning German is simply a good investment. All German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) enjoy one of the best healthcare systems in the world. The German health care system was taken as a model by both the Clinton and Obama administrations in their efforts to reform the US system.
There are more than 2,000 hospitals in Germany. About half the hospitals are public, with about 30 of them being university clinics. One third of the clinics are private but non-profit, while the other hospitals in Germany are for-profit clinics. Their numbers are increasing, but the number of doctors retiring every year is exceeding the number of new doctors so there is a shortage in doctors; foreign doctors are welcome! Hence, Germany provides Jordanian physicians opportunities for medical specialties, working and living in Germany. Medical students in Jordan can now even complete the elective course (Famulatur) in Germany.
The language is the most important barrier and is the difference between success and failure In the past most German hospitals required B2, nowadays C1 and a special German Medical Language course is required. For the elective course (Famulatur) hospitals often require students to have a language degree varying from A2 to B2. We at the Language Generation Center (LGC) provide you in addition to the needed regular courses with the special medical language course from licensed instructors to prepare for the medical exams in Germany. Moreover, we offer every two months international recognized exams (OSD) in our center for all five levels A1- C1. Each of these exams includes tasks testing reading, listening, writing and speaking skills. So, whether you’re a total newbie or trying to get back to the German language after a break, LGC is here to offer you a reliable source of fun and engaging native German material with a huge variety of subjects. Our amazing team members are Nadeen Hijazeen, Hamzeh Hamaideh, Mohammed Kiswani, Alaa Tawalbeh, Marleen Hijazeen, Yara Al-Zo’bi, Abdelhadi Njada and Dawod Zahi. Their passion and commitment is what made us reach where we are today. Why Stroke? Most importantly, it is a serious yet preventable condition, which means the more people know about it, the more they are able to protect themselves from it. It is sad to say that Jordan includes a high-risk population for this condition, thus it is our duty to try and change that.

Stroke Awareness Campaign A Journey of Success
Our campaign involved heading out to schools to educate children and their teachers, then we held several screening campaigns in Aqaba and Al-Karak that involved hospitals, shopping centers, markets and youth clubs. Our aim was to reach 2,000 adults and educate them adequately on the risk factors, a healthy lifestyle in addition to checking their blood pressure and sugar levels. We also distributed brochures and home equipment for measuring blood sugar levels. We taught people how to use these devices, and the importance of regular screening. Our next step involved meeting with the Ministry of Education and discussing the implementation of a Healthy School Certificate Program in Aqaba and Al-Karak, where schools would be encouraged to teach its students a healthy lifestyle through Physical Education classes and a suitable cafeteria menu. This was supported by two Educational Directors in the aforementioned cities. Finally, all the data we collected is now being used in a research about stroke prevalence in Jordan, an assessment of the prevalence of risk factors, and how well-educated people really were about the topic. What makes stroke a special campaign? We never gave up! We faced some problems in fundraising but started our first 2 steps with ZERO budget! However, by the end of our journey, we gained the support and trust of 8 different sponsors. In reality, we implemented a real change in our community! We invested our time and effort to make it happen. Napolean Hill once said, “The starting point of all achievements is desire.” Our desire for success and belief in IFMSA-Jo generally and MULC specifically is what lead us here. Technology Redefines Who We Are
“I’m not who I think I’m, I’m not who you think I’m, I’m who I think you think I am.” –Charles Cooley
managed to create a tool that changed our cognitive activity; Augmented Reality is perhaps the closest we got into turning the self and the world into one.
I’ve read more life and happiness quotes in the past month on social media than I could ever count; I’ve read stuff like “Life is what you make of it” and “Life isn’t what happens to you, it’s how you react to it.” It appears that the human race has almost unanimously agreed that life isn’t “stuff”, it’s how you perceive that “stuff”; how you choose to process them and how you respond to it. Our perception of stuff creates our own subjective experience. Something else that’s popular in this day and age is bashing technology, people say things like “I have a short attention-span because I keep watching -6second long vines” and “I can’t read books now because I’m used to getting my information in 140 characters or less.” While these ideas seem unrelated in theory, they are paradoxical in application. In a day and age where we can’t spend ten minutes without using technology, technology becomes an instrument of perception; technology becomes the medium through which we perceive, the medium through which we experience life, and the medium through which we create our realities.
In the age of social media, technology has provided us with a sense of authorship; our Facebook profiles and our Instagram feeds have provided us with ways to shape and sculpt the way we present ourselves to the world, ways to dictate how people perceive us. The effect that social media has on our self-image extends way beyond our social media “presence.” The theory of “the Looking Glass Self” by Charles Cooley in 1902 states that “a person's self grows out of society's interpersonal interactions and the perceptions of others.” It’s simplified in the quote “I’m not who I think I’m, I’m not who you think I’m, I’m who I think you think I am.” we create an image in our head of what we think others think of us until we wear that image as a mask, until we become it. The irony of this is that we never get to know for sure what people think of us, just what we think they think of us.
Recent advancements in new technologies have managed to create tools to extend our range of possibilities, to extend the impact of our actions, and to turn the human imagination inside-out. We have managed as a species to design tools that design us back in return, continuing an everlasting cycle of innovation. Augmented Reality is a perfect example of how humans have
This is clearer now than ever because of new technologies. Technologies are changing the way we think of everything, including philosophy, and I can’t wait to see what technology is going to change next!

In conclusion, technology gives a sense of identity fluidity. The fact that our own image is dictated by what we think others think of us leads to one common conclusion: we live in a construct of our own making. We should accept this fact and stop wondering about how “authentic” our presentations of ourselves are. We should give up and accept that identity is a “fluid act of improvisation.” “Self” is not a solid thing and never has been.

Alcohol, Tobacco, Gambling and Smartphones!
Chief Editor.
Aws Al-Mukhtar I recently went on a trip to Um-Qais with my friends, we were planning a day to remember and indeed it was. We headed out in the morning, my phone was plugged to the car and we were laughing and singing all the way there with all our worries left behind in Amman. By the time we arrived there, we had taken about 99 selfies and group pictures. Moreover, when we finished touring the site I had taken fairly more pics than Kim Kardashian on an award ceremony! I came back to the car to grab my spare clothes, changed and then was the shock as my friend had locked us out of the car! Little could we do as we sat down at a table nearby and waited the spare key for 3 hours. I could see my books, wallet and phone through the glass. What else was I going to do but sit tight? I felt like I was being punished. I had a final in 2 days and now I’m wasting valuable time in which I should be preparing for the exam. I sat their staring at everyone scrolling their phones. I was so furious that the steam coming off the top of my coffee could have been coming out of my ears. How could he have been so stupid? In fact, that was when I realized I wasn’t really angry about being locked out of the car (although that was an inconvenience) and I certainly wasn’t mad about wasting “valuable” time. I was mad that my cell phone was locked in the car. I couldn’t scroll Facebook. I couldn’t check my email. I couldn’t even call or text without asking to borrow a phone. Without my cell phone I was so insecure I felt like I was sitting on that table lifeless and I didn’t like it one bit. I started thinking about how attached I was to my phone. It goes with me everywhere. I’m never without it. I even take it to the bathroom. I scroll it for half an hour in bed before I try to sleep and it’s the first thing I say good morning to. I am NEVER without it. I was bored and anxious, instead of turning to my friends I turned to my phone! What kind of relationship do WE have?

From a scientific point of view, latest research shows that dopamine, a chemical released in the brain, causes seeking behavior. It causes us to crave, desire, lust and search thus, increasing our general level of arousal and goal-directed behavior. We also have what we call the opioid system that gives us the feeling of gratification, pleasure and self-indulgence. These two systems are complementary, the craving system prompts us to action and the gratification system provides us with satisfaction and therefore we pause our seeking. With cellphones and internet, dopamine starts our seeking, then we get rewarded instantly for that which makes us seek more. It becomes harder and harder to stop looking at emails, stop texting, or stop checking our cell phones looking for more - hence, an endless loop - until we feel dizzy, tired and start looking for another source of instant satisfaction. The truth is, we’ve been outsmarted by our very own smart phones! It’s well known that people can become addicted to drugs, such as alcohol, narcotics and the nicotine in cigarettes but can we be addicted to cell phones? Some cell phone users show the same symptoms that a drug addict might have, according to a study in August Journal of Behavioral Addictions. Certain people use smartphones to lift their moods. And it may take more and more time on those phones to provide the same level of joy. For such people, losing a phone or having its battery die could cause anxiety or panic. In medicine, we call that withdrawal! According to a survey done on university students, the average daily cellphone use was 9 Hours! that’s More than the recommended daily 8 hours of sleep which causes tremendous issues ranging from relationship and social issues to developmental issues especially to teenagers and young adults as their brains are not fully mature yet. Now let’s dig deeper, what was our source of satisfaction before cellphones? Maybe satisfaction through social commune and neighbors? Career satisfaction through achievements and success or maybe relationship satisfaction through love and care? Science tells us that younger generations are now more qualified than they were before, evidently technology and internet are to be accredited for that. Nevertheless, science also reveals that they are less happy. In the advent of urbanization and modern day life, cellphones and internet have become a necessity and an exigency in our lives. For all that, we have to carefully decide on the right opioid for our brain. Do we long for the buzz of instant gratification or the ecstasy of long term achievement? Next time you go on a family trip or out with your friends take only one cell phone for emergencies, disconnect from the digital world, you don’t need a thousand pictures and a video to memorize those “digitally lived moments”. Feel the wind, listen to your friends, descry the view not through your lens but your sight, and instead of worrying about how good your hair looks mess up your friend’s hair and run. That’s bliss! www.ifmsa-jo.org

1.What makes you so passionate about your standing committee? It is the pleasure of providing our students with an experience abroad that will be embedded in their memory for an eternity. Learning, sharing ideas, having fun and making lifelong friendships make up the essence of our exchange program. While hosting students not only do you have the privilege of experiencing a cultural friendly atmosphere, but also the chance to present our very own to the fullest. 2.What is the biggest challenge you face being a national officer? The responsibility. Many look at you as the only solution, though time and energy consuming, it pays off well when an exchange runs smoothly for all. 3.What, in your opinion, makes a successful project? One with a definite goal and benefit. It really all depends on having great group dynamics between a responsible leader and committed team members.

What makes you so passionate about your standing committee? My work within SCORA became a reflection of my dreams. SCORA topics are not easily tackled in the EMR. The challenge of breaking all the barriers, ending stigma and discrimination, and empowering people is what kept me going. It wasn’t positions that mattered, but it was the horizons that were broadened which helped me execute my ideas on a larger scale. Leadership is an action, not a position. Every SCORAngel has the passion to lead, the power to heal, and a dedication beyond measure. What is the biggest challenge you face being a national officer? Leadership constantly presents challenges to a leader and their abilities. These challenges are an invitation to rise to another level, to test ourselves and improve in the process, and to show that we can accomplish something that may seem difficult or even impossible. A national officer who is a medical student in the first place faces many challenges such as workload. Juggling priorities is always at the forefront. What, in your opinion, makes a successful project? Having a talented project coordinator and a motivated team is the first step to actual project success, but there are other important factors that contribute largely to a project’s outcome. It takes careful planning, attention to detail, continuous evaluation and effective communication to make a project succeed. With vigilant management and a strong project closing, we can consistently reach project success.

What makes you so passionate about your standing committee? "Learning should be joyful and full of excitement, it is life's greatest adventure" Said Taylor Caldwell, this is actually what makes SCOME special to me, the way it adds more soul into the journey of students in the medical school and because medical education is more than just learning and a medical school is more than just a building. It’s a shield that protects humanity from danger through preparing competent and knowledgeable doctors. What is the biggest challenge you face being a national officer? Sadly, in too many places, access to learning has come at the expense of actual learning, which has demotivated students from being involved in the learning process, this adds more responsibility on me and on all medical education enthusiasts, to motivate members and inspire them to change. What, in your opinion, makes a successful project? Individual talents get magnified many times over through the collective lens of an effective team, therefore involving each and every member of the team, giving them the space to express themselves and leave their unique fingerprint in the work ensures a successful project and a happy working environment.
Problems can come when you're grabbing everything at the same time. Whether it's being an officer or even at home, so 24 hours are never enough! With a little motivation, you can be surprised with the relief you get when everything is accomplished and it is a million times more rewarding than when you have all the time in the world! What, in your opinion, makes a successful project? 1 Plan of Action 2 Working on that plan 3 Trying your best to work with what yo u got 4 Dreaming Big an d working to make it true 5 a smart leader multifunctional preferably 6 Tracking step s an d succ esses 7 Learning f rom previous mistakes whet her from o ther campaigns or within the events 8 Giv ing a chan ce for new members to work 9 Giving good o rien tation with energy and i ncreasing members enthusiasm for each event 10 Treating Members like fa mily a nd g iving them excuse s and e xplanatio n 11 Love your Job and appreciate it

What makes you so passionate about your standing committee? Human rights are as old as human civilization, and to see them still being violated in our communities until today is alarming. Humanity will serve its true purpose when everyone is treated equally and therefore, I really want to work towards upholding those rights and serve those underprivileged people to be part of fostering the true human values.
What is the biggest challenge you face being a national officer?
My biggest challenge is my biggest motivation, which is; competition. I am a very competitive person and my biggest challenge is to be able to raise SCORP to become the best committee not just on a national level, but being able to compete with other SCORP committees across the region and the world to leave a trail and to lead by example
What, in your opinion, makes a successful project?
A successful project is the one that has continuity, it is the one that serves long-term goals, and the longer the better. We should all aim to serve to teach how to let people produce rather than just give to people.

Ahmad Abbadi Have you ever had to smoke a cigarette because you felt stressed? Or because you were agitated and wanted something to calm you down? Or perhaps you wanted to focus on your studies? As many might believe it’s the cigarette that helped in those tough times, but what if I told you the cigarette was the cause? The association between mental health and smoking wasn’t clearly established and studied as much as the physical effects of smoking on different organs. When the Surgeon General’s Report released in 1964, it didn’t mention the association between tobacco and any mental disorder, even the latest in 2014, it only discussed the effects on brain development and cognitive function. However, multiple researchers found that there is a strong correlation between many mental disorders and tobacco. Tobacco contains more than 4000 chemical compounds, of which 70 are known to be carcinogens. The remaining products have multiple effects, some of them do affect the brain and the thought process. It is found that nicotine which is the most studied product in tobacco causes addiction, dependence and withdrawal symptoms, and is recognized by the World Health Organization as the third most addictive substance found so far. Due to the effects of tobacco on mental health, tobacco companies were cleverly wicked that they used this association to their benefit. They harnessed all their knowledge and research into putting that into marketing for tobacco and targeting the most vulnerable groups. Henceforth, they were able to turn tobacco into something that exists in every country around the world, in different forms, shapes and products. IFMSA - Jordan Magazine (March 17' Edition)
28
Clear the Fog The advertisement of tobacco is targeted in a way that attracts the person, and goes with how they think or want to be. When they first promoted tobacco, they used the term “cool”, and with time the word developed to become “independent”, “grown up”, “decision maker”, and “personal choice”. Tobacco companies invest more than 1 million dollars an hour to advertise for their products to a point where they made you see the smoker as a normal person, not an addict. They made you see smoking as a simple choice that you can quit from doing at any time you may wish for. We no longer notice smoking as a behavior because we have been brainwashed to accept it, embrace it and even defend it! This isn’t even where the story ends. Those who are under more stress are more likely to smoke, and those who have been affected by traumatic events have the likelihood to pick up smoking. Tobacco companies targeted this, and who better than military soldiers to make the best candidates? Tobacco companies used to supply United States military workers with tobacco packs as part of their field rations in World War I, which contained food, water and other life essentials. An investment that was necessary, as military workers are part of the political decision, and put great pressures on the government. Their strategy proved to be successful, because in 1975 the government removed this product from the rations, and soldiers had to buy tobacco packs themselves. The money influx from military workers is something they are benefiting from until this day, as the percentage of smokers among military workers is generally higher than civilians around the world! With further study and research, scientists have found that the prevalence of mental disorders is higher among smokers compared to non-smokers. The main disorders that have been associated with tobacco are depression, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and sleeping disorders. They even found that smokers have lower self-esteem and negative body image compared to non-smokers. Cond`d www.ifmsa-jo.org
Articles.. Regional Assistant for SCOPH in the Eastern Mediterranean Region
Ahmad Abbadi Addiction doesn’t mean it’s impossible to quit, but it does mean that is very challenging. Withdrawing from nicotine will affect addicts in a way that will prevent them from even doing simple activities like studying, logical thinking, and even their ability to calm themselves and rationalize without feeding themselves a dose of nicotine. Even if they decided to quit, less than %5 will be able to successfully quit without proper treatment and professional assistance. Despite that, there are people succeeding in smoking cessation of both water pipes and cigarettes, What’s becoming a real challenge for physicians all over the world is the creation of new forms and formulas of tobacco. “Medwakh” or “Dowkha” is available in so many differnt blends, with the exact contents unknown. The blends are available range from cold to very hot blends. Recently published papers show that the hotter the blend is, the fewer the numbers of patients are able to succeed in cessation, and there no reported successful cases so far for the very hot blend, which probably suggests that the composition of their products contain new substances that are more addictive than cigarettes.
Clear the Fog A smoker or non-smoker, the first step towards the solution is recognizing that tobacco companies are very influential and never an ally to the smoker. Then, understand that it is very essential to protect the future generations from the harms of tobacco, through promoting smoke-free places and smoke-free drama. For politicians and call makers, we need you to stand with us and assist us in refusing lobbying by tobacco companies, strengthen legislations, and implement the law. We also need the assistance of the government to support research in tobacco’s effects on mental health to provide us with strong evidence and platform that we can work on. We need every person to collaborate in order to fight the reality we are living in, to allow us to get out of the swamp that is taking us deeper, to clear the fog that obstructs our vision and the haze alters our way of thinking.
Economically speaking, tobacco already costs us more than 700 million JD a year, and with the increasing numbers of smokers among Jordanians, we can expect a greater loss on both the financial and human resources levels. So what should we do?

Natasha Bouran It is the known as the silent killer; you can’t see it, you can’t smell it and you can’t taste it. Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas produced by the incomplete combustion of organic matter. Most fatalities from CO toxicity result from fires, but stoves, portable heaters, and automobile exhaust cause approximately one third of deaths. The Civil Defense Department (CDD) reports that 40 people were killed due to asphyxia across the kingdom in the winter of 2016 alone. This is sadly not an anomalous situation, for 307 accidents resulting in 23 deaths occurred in 2015 and 90 accidents leading to 17 deaths occurred in 2014. This seasonal curse is not exclusive to developing countries. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates the average annual number of deaths from unintentional, non-fire-related carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States as 430 deaths per year. How does CO poisoning occur? Under normal conditions, carbon monoxide levels in blood plasma are approximately 0 mmHg since it has a higher diffusion coefficient than oxygen and the body’s mechanism for excreting any CO made performs very well. However, turning on appliances which produce CO, especially in a tightly sealed or enclosed space, cause it to accumulate in the air beyond “safe levels”. When CO is breathed in, it binds to hemoglobin, the principal oxygen-carrying compound in the blood, to produce carboxyhemoglobin. While the toxic effects of CO are still under study and not yet fully understood, it is believed that the formation of this compound decreases the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood by retaining oxygen that would otherwise be delivered to body tissues since the affinity between IFMSA - Jordan Magazine (March 17' Edition)

A Silent, Warm Death hemoglobin and CO is almost 230 times stronger than the affinity between hemoglobin and oxygen, therefore hemoglobin binds to CO in preference to oxygen. Oxygen deprivation effects manifest in the organ systems most dependent on oxygen use; the central nervous system and the heart. Another mechanism includes CO binding to myoglobin, an oxygen-binding protein found in muscle tissue, which causes reduced cardiac output, respiratory arrest and hypotension. But perhaps the most important effect of CO poisoning on the body is causing brain lipid peroxidation, which is the breakdown of lipids in cell membranes leading to cell damage. This results in the swelling or premature death of brain cells and may result in some cognitive defects affecting memory, learning and movement. What are its symptoms? It is worth mentioning that the CO tolerance level varies from person to person due to several factors, including activity level, a pre-existing cerebral or cardiovascular condition, anemia and other hematological disorders and the person’s metabolic rate. That being said, studies prove that chronic exposure to CO leads to a significantly shorter life span, regardless of your body’s tolerance level. This is regarding long time exposure effect to CO at home or in the workplace, however, acute exposure leads to many symptoms from a simple headache to death within the frightening time interval of 3 minutes if the ambient concentration is at a very high level. As previously mentioned, toxicity mainly affects 2 organs; the heart and the brain. Therefore, exposure leads to cardiac abnormalities such as a fast heart rate, low blood pressure and irregular heartbeats, as well as central nervous system irregularities which include hallucinations, dizziness, seizures, unconsciousness and eventually death. Premortem vs Postmortem The swift diagnosis of CO poisoning is extremely difficult to perform since early symptoms, especially if only exposed to low-level amounts, are quite common in many diseases and thus can be misleading. Furthermore, they are not visible like a rash or Cond`d www.ifmsa-jo.org

They are said to be flu-like symptoms, hence it is important that the history taking procedure performed by the physician is taken with the utmost specificity. Other differential diagnoses include acute respiratory distress syndrome, diabetic ketoacidosis and opioid or alcohol poisoning. In contrast, cadavers of victims of CO poisoning show the classic sign of looking red-cheeked and healthy; a cherry-red appearance, as opposed to the pale, bluish color of normal corpses. It is one of the many cases of irony in medicine and nature.
A Silent, Warm Death frequently depicted in pop culture media such as movies and television programs, especially following the suicide of popular lead singer Brad Delp of the rock band Boston in 2007. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure In hopes of combating the surging number of incidents caused by gas and wood-burning heaters, the CDD Information and Preventive Education Unit has issued guidelines to educate the public on the safe and proper use of the various means of heating which can be found on their website and are definitely worth looking at. Stay warm, stay safe!
The Hibachi method A misconception concerning CO poisoning results in it being a common suicide method as it is described as being “easy and painless”. It is executed by running a car engine continuously in a non-ventilated garage, or by running a pipe from the exhaust directly into the car. This phenomenon is known as “death by hibachi”. Contrary to popular belief, it is actually the cumulative serum concentration of CO, not the depletion of oxygen in tissues, that causes death. If not already asleep, exposure to a relatively low level of CO produces a messy death characterized by vomiting, seizures, feeling of suffocation and body-wide pains. Several awareness-raising campaigns targeting young people were organized in the United States as cases of CO poisoning became the 2nd most important public health problem in recent years and many of the cases were suspected, yet not proven, to be intentional. It is of extreme importance to educate young people on this topic since this phenomenon has been IFMSA - Jordan Magazine (March 17' Edition)

Amr Jarajreh Slow, flashy and loud. That's the scene we've always seen in movies, but the actual version was fast, dark and completely silent. “A drunk driver decided to change his lane in a two-way street, he didn't only lose his life but a family lost a father”, the officer said. That was what I heard immediately after the bright fluorescent light of the ER hit my eyes. I could barely feel my legs and my left arm was heavy and strapped to my sore neck. Through the unsubtle noise that I was surrounded by, the idea of death was still fictional to me until I saw her face; immersed in tears mixed with blood, while staggering to the edge of my bed. It didn't cross my mind at first that the remorseless officer was talking about two different people. It didn't cross my mind that he was talking about my father. Doctors and nurses patronizingly gazed at the scene, not paying attention to their bloody coats, their yellowish, almost paralyzed, gloved hands, but eagerly awaited to observe my reaction after what they assumed was the duration for me to fathom my tragedy. During which, all I could think of was "What if?" … A person who anonymous, 21.

‘Till It Happens to You’ (RTA) and over 6000 individuals have been wounded, costing us over 768 million. Yearly, numbers fluctuate. In other words, every 33 minutes a person is wounded and every 13 hours a person loses their life in Jordan. RTAs are one of the Top 10 leading causes of death in low to middle income economies in 2015. From afflicting families to losing hopes and dreams, the outcomes of RTAs are unfortunately unpredictable. Evidently, they might range from catastrophes such as losing a life or living with a permanent disability to fairly nil. Speeding, distracted driving, texting, driving under the influence and much more are key risk factors that potentiate the occurrence of an unfortunate event. Therefore, let’s spare ourselves and others the ordeal by being more cautious, focused and fully aware while driving. But the remaining question at the end is "what if?" What if they were able to avoid each other’s cars? What if they got back to their homes safely, told their terrifying stories, each side blaming the other? What if their lives weren't changed in that heart-rending way? What if the father was still alive? Most of the times we are oblivious to the point of blindness, to the point where we cannot see what's happening around us, what is being caused by us and what we are capable of doing. So we all should take a step back to contemplate the consequences of our actions because, unfortunately, someday we might be either the driver or the father!
Paradoxically, reducing people to numbers and figures makes it easier for us to pretend that the magnitude of any problem is less significant. In Jordan, traffic accidents constitute a major health problem. They are considered the second leading cause of death. In the past three years, roughly, over 2000 deaths have been attributed to Road Traffic Accidents IFMSA - Jordan Magazine (March 17' Edition)

Ahmed Al-Azzam If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it's lethal. That briefly describes my life. I was caged in a repetitive manner of actions. I had to play the same CD of my life every single day until I joined IFMSA, that was when my life had been turned upside down. I am Ahmed Al-Azzam, a sophomore medical student at the Hashemite University and an active member at IFMSA-Jo HULC. I joined IFMSA last year and that is when my journey began. When I decided to register as a member in IFMSA, I joined the Standing Committee on Research Exchange, because I’m interested in medical research in general and particularly in those that focus on cancer. After 6 months of hard work with IFMSA, I applied for the sub-regional training in the Netherlands and was accepted. I selected professional and exchange research training, of course, because it was my field of interest since I am currently also the Local Officer on Research Exchange (LORE) at my Local Committee.
A Workshop to Remember possible to bring back this experience to IFMSA-Jo. Additionally, I made friends from all around the world more than I have ever made in my life! In the closing ceremony, I had the best surprise of my life; I was elected as the most enthusiastic participant of the sub-regional training afterwhich I promised myself to do my best to live up to my friends’ expectations. From then on, I was encouraged to apply for the pre-GA TNT. Every time I do an activity or work with IFMSA, I realize how much I am dedicated to this lovely organization. From what I have experienced I can tell that international training is one of the most beautiful experiences in IFMSA, not only on the social level, but also to improve your skills as a doctor. During a short period of time, students have the chance to learn, have fun, acquire knowledge and most importantly convey what they have learned and apply it in their countries and its projects.
First of all, I went to see the beautiful Amsterdam before attending the training sessions. I met other participants and we went on a tour there. We went to Amsterdamse Bos, one of the most spectacular places I've ever been in my life. The next day, work began. We went to the city of Schevenignen, where the workshops were held, and I met so many enthusiastic participants in the field of my interest. Our workshop focused on exchange in general, as well as global health. It was incredible, I tried to benefit as much as

Interviews.. Vice President of External Affairs
Anas Al-Kilany
Team of Officials Interview: Anas Al-Kilany
1. Tell us a little about yourself. Who is Anas Al-Kilany? I’m currently a 5th year medical student at the Hashemite University. I joined IFMSA in 2012 as a first year student. My first project was volunteering in NGA4, can you imagine? That was when I realized I really wanted to be part of an organization that embodies a significant part of our society.
2. What made you want to become the National Vice President of External Affairs? I am talkative, and very sociable, I enjoy making new relationships which really helped me in attracting a lot of sponsors and supporters to the projects I worked in. This helped me build a significant database of acquaintances who were familiar with IFMSA-Jo, and I really wanted to organize this process on the national level.
3. What, in your opinion, is the biggest challenge you face being VPE? Honestly, having to gather all the contact information from different delegates about who they’ve been in touch with. As an organization involving over 5,000 students, having to ensure that everyone abides by our bylaws and procedures is overwhelming at time. But with the dedicated team we have, this challenge has been easier to deal with.
Do you have any advice for IFMSA-Jo members who aspire to hold a position in the future? No excuses, fight for your dreams. If you really want anything in life, you have to work for it with integrity, dedication and commitment. Don’t let anyone or anything stop you!

Alia Khamis Picture this: You’re driving home from school/work during rush hour, exhausted and fed up with the hustle and bustle of the day. Your phone buzzes and you’re instinctively tempted to check your notifications. You think to yourself “it’ll only take a split second…”. We’ve all been there haven’t we? Well, think again. Living in a time in which social media dominates many aspects of our lives and absent-mindedly consumes so much of our time, it’s fairly easy to get carried away in situations as such without really thinking of the consequences and how dangerous things can get. Texting has become a social norm ever since smartphones have become increasingly popular in the early 2000s, constantly urging us to stay connected at every minute and hour of the day. But is it really a top priority while engaged in driving? Logically speaking, texting or using a cell phone while driving is extremely hazardous to the driver and to the surrounding people. As soon as the driver’s eyes meet their cellular device, their focus on the road is drawn away. Despite this fact, %77 of young adults seem rather confident that they can safely text and drive. %55 of them claim that it’s an easy task. Let’s have a look at the statistics: -In the United States, over 2.5 million people are involved in road accidents each year, and of these 2.5 million, 1.6 million (over half) of these accidents are cell phone related. Yearly, over 330,000 accidents caused by texting while driving lead to severe injuries in the US.
IFMSA - Jordan Magazine (March 17' Edition) 37
Don’t tempt fate… that text can wait. -Texting and driving is also 6 times more likely to get you in an accident than driving while intoxicated. -Reading a text message while driving successfully distracts a driver for a minimum of five seconds each time, this is the equivalent to driving while blind for 5 seconds at a time. -In those 5 seconds, you drive the length of a football field (at a speed of 90 km/h). Mind-boggling, isn’t it? Moreover, not only are distracted drivers harming themselves, they are putting every other driver and even pedestrians crossing the road in the same dangerous position without even realizing it. Taking the provided statistics into consideration, it would only make sense that text messaging is banned for all drivers in 46 out of 50 states in America. But as much as the government tries to prohibit texting while driving, they cannot stop it. “This is what drinking and driving was to previous generations” -Rep. Eddie Lucio II The simple solution: One effortless thing that can be done is to put networking on hold and keep your eyes on the road while driving. If there’s a really urgent matter, pull over before using your phone. Set an example. It will mean more than you think, keeping in mind that many younger drivers justify it and think “it’s ok” just because they see adults do it. Remember: It takes a few seconds to view a text, and for a child to step into the road…

IFMSA Programs The need for IFMSA programs was best described by the Program Enrollment Coordinator, Faris Nimri, who said : "IFMSA activities are the foundational elements of our work in this organization, the elements that form the brick-and-mortar of who we are, and deeply imbedded that without them IFMSA will collapse into rubble. And our passion for these projects and activities is what drives and motivate us to join our local committees and IFMSA and do what we do and invest our heart and soul into it. That’s why IFMSA always searches for new and strategic ways to constantly develop and improve the level of its activities and their quality, to maintain sustainability and measure their impact, and therefore the concept of “Programs” was introduced."
What are Programs?
“IFMSA Programs are centralized streams of different activities that address problems within a specific field that we as medical students and global health advocates stand up for while connecting local, national and international activities and opportunities that contribute to the final outcome.” All NMOs and members of NMOs locally and nationally are encouraged to join an IFMSA Program through enrolling their activities, whether that be projects, campaigns, celebrations, workshops, events, trainings or theme based publications, which can fit in any of the following : Education among specific societal groups, Advocacy, Campaigning, Research, Fundraising for 3rd Parties or Operative work. IFMSA Programs are 18 program that address all the important subjects that fall under the umbrella of the different standing committees. IFMSA - Jordan Magazine (March 17' Edition) 38
Nour Hayek
How will Programs benefit IFMSA-Jo? How will Programs benefit IFMSA-Jo? In addition to improving the quality and impact of IFMSA-Jo activities along with better capacity building via the increase in member’s knowledge and skills regarding activity planning, impact and evaluation measurement, IFMSA Programs have many benefits for IFMSA-Jo; such as promoting IFMSA-Jo activities on the international level which will gain IFMSA recognition that in turn will provide better chances to receive support from authorities for the activities and facilitate the fundraising and finding external partners for IFMSA-Jo, in addition to having the privilege to use IFMSA logo in promotional materials of the activities.
How do I join an IFMSA Program? How do I join an IFMSA Program? Any local/ national activity that wishes to join an IFMSA program should contact the Projects Support Division Director (PSDD), Nour Hayek, then make sure his/her activity is in line with the goals of one of the IFMSA Programs after going through the Program Proposal carefully. Then, contact the activity coordinator and submit Activity Candidature Form signed and stamped by the NMO President and complete the Activity Enrollment Form with clear goals, objectives, indicators of success and measurable impact on the relevant target group. After finishing the activity, a report form should be submitted which show the impact of the activity.
Did IFMSA-Jo enroll any activity in a Program?
Proudly, t his term, we enrolled the first activity of IFMSA-Jo: the national project, Safe Injection Practice Training i n the international program “Teaching Medical Sk ills” by the efforts of our great NOME, Raneem Sha waqfeh, and the help of the Projects Support Division team. On behalf of the PSD team, I wish you an impactful term! Yours, Nour Hayek Projects Su pport Division Director at IFMSA-Jo for the Term 2017/2016 www.ifmsa-jo.org
