Amazing IFMSA friends It is amazing for me to have the opportunity to invite you all to our Regional Meeting, the main and most important event of our amazing region of the Americas. Since the moment I joined IFMSA (a while ago‌) I immediately fell in love with our region and its great potential. I believe that our region is a great mix of cultures, variety, ideas, people and backgrounds, and that gives us a unique distinction within the IFMSA. Our region has gone so far in the last couple of years: having a larger representation in our broad American geography, building strong connection between our members and creating for them a special sense of identity, an identity that makes me really proud. Our Regional Meeting will be the instance to gather, meet and share around our great passion, for our region and for the IFMSA. This will be an opportunity to connect and build long lasting friendships, to learn, and to give something back to your national member organizations once back home. About Uruguay Officially the Eastern Republic of Uruguay (Spanish: República Oriental del Uruguay), is a country in the southeastern region of South America. It is bordered by Argentina to its west and Brazil to its north and east, with the Atlantic Ocean to the south and southeast. Uruguay is home to 3.3 million people, of whom 1.8 million live in the metropolitan area of its capital and largest city, Montevideo. Uruguay is ranked first in Latin America in democracy, peace, lack of corruption, quality of living, e-Government and equality. Uruguay is the first in South America when it comes to press freedom, size of the middle class, prosperity and security. On a per capita basis, Uruguay contributes more troops to United Nations peacekeeping missions than any other country. The Economist named Uruguay “country of the year” in 2013, acknowledging the innovative policy of legalizing the production, sale and consumption of cannabis. Same-sex marriage and abortion are also legal, leading Uruguay to be regarded as one of the most liberal nations in the world, and one of the most socially developed, outstanding regionally and performing well globally on personal rights, tolerance and inclusion issues.

Uruguayan citizens and registered residents living here for at least two years will be able to buy up to 40g of marijuana per month from the pharmacy (not available for tourists). Personal use of cannabis has been decriminalizzed in Uruguay as far back as 1974. Selling is illegal. If you are wondering, Uruguay’s marijuana laws regarding public consumption are similar to the tobacco laws.
Important facts Smoke Free Places Smoking is prohibited in all enclosed public places, enclosed workplaces, and public transportation. In addition, smoking is forbidden within the outdoor premises of health and educational institutions. The hotel rooms and public spaces are smoke free. You will only be able to smoke on outdoors, designated areas.

From an objective point of view, a person who has already undergone a TNT, a trainer, can develop his training capacity through two different ways. The first is simply to increase the non-formal education knowledge. This can be done with his peers (other trainers which have undergone different training experiences) or by involving an external - like a training company or a professional trainer. On the other hand, a trainer can expand his training capacity by learning how to do something himself. In the TOT the idea is to focus the energy on directly on the second developing way and, to indirectly promote the first developing way. With this strategy, we can assure that all participants end up with a satisfactory experience.
TNT is focused for IFMSA members with the interest of knowing the “how” of a process. Most people with an idea of a project for example know what they want to do and they might even know why exactly they want to do it. Through non-formal education, the idea is reach the tools of how to do it. In the case of Trainers, at the end of a TNT not only should they have a vast knowledge on that “how”, but, most importantly, they should know how to retransmit that knowledge to participants in a training session.
The idea is to have specific TOT topics, such as TOT on Advocacy, Project Management, Leadership, and so on.
The workshop is achieved in three days; time in which the participants will have the time to complete approximately 13 training sessions with all types of content. Besides pure nonformal education material, the aim is also to help the participant develop themselves and understand the Training philosophy. To ensure the achievement of this last point, the TNT participants will also be put in direct contact with the TOT participants; so as to learn from them

The IFMSA Americas Region is a growing region with many Public Health problems that Medical Students are addressing from different perspectives. The faces of health and disease are rapidly changing with each passing year and solutions to tackle this new and ever changing challenges should change innovatively following the same pace. This can only be done by strong leadership and appropriate knowledge.
This workshop seeks to build on the successful trainings we have had on Maternal Health and Safe Abortion in many of the regional meetings and previous General Assemblies. The workshop is modeled on the training that the SCORA International Team and Americas’ medical students have previously received, and is focused on expanding the number of IFMSA members who are trained on delivering the curriculum IFMSA developed with Ipas. The focus of this workshop is to advance the development of a network of safe abortion trainers and advocates within the Federation. The training covers several related topics; such as: human, sexual and reproductive rights; abortion laws and policies; barriers to access care, including stigma; safe abortion methods; and identification and referral of women with abortion-related complications. The curriculum also includes information and activities on values clarification for abortion attitude.
We, as medical students, present current and future health leaders and as such we must be equipped with right tools and posses right knowledge to successfully lead our fellow medical students, as well as the general population. As we said it’s a necessity for medical students to have knowledge about public health, solutions to public health issues, but also to be equipped with right leadership skills to tackle growing health problems ¬ locally, nationally and globally. Unfortunately, this is rarely taught in medical schools and as such it is our duty to bring the issues we face in Public Health to our fellow medical students and equip them with right tools to tackle them.

This year SCOPE and SCORE joined forces once more to bring a workshop related to the exchanges for the Pre-Regional Meeting. For the Americas Regional Meeting, we are proposing a workshop on “Global Health within Exchanges�, after its clear success in the Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting this year. Also, as a similar workshop was held last year in Colombia, we would like to propose this one to offer more capacity building for new members. Having this workshop for the preRM provides us with the unique opportunity to improve the workflow in our Standing Committees as well as to train new members. Throughout the past terms, SCOPE & SCORE Regional Assistants have had the same feeling: A need for a training on Exchanges in the region is becoming more and more important and urgent. We, as Exchange Directors focusing this year on Capacity Building and Academic Quality, would like to reach exchange officers at the local level, propose them this training to improve their capacity of handling a perfect exchange program, with a real focus on the academic quality of it. One of the biggest problems we face in the exchanges is a lack of continuity and evaluation. SCOPE and SCORE are both highly professional organizations- we are basically running an international business, but still we are losing an incredible majority of ideas, projects and even defined plans through the constant handovers we are facing. If we count it, almost every month

happens a transition at a point in a country- if it is a LEO/LORE or a NEO/NORE- or even just a contact person. All of these issues can be included in one topic/project that can be implemented to every NMOs before the departure of the students in order for them to have the proper knowledge and preparation within these areas, which is the Pre-Departure Training/Pre-Exchange Training. Therefore, we would like to raise the PDT/PET itself during the preRM.

LEAD is an innovative 3 day workshop directed to IFMSA national and regional leaders. It is based on working on 4 main streams of skills (Leadership skills, Empowerment of members, Advocacy and Development of LCs & NMOs) in order to improve the capacity of those members in leading their local committees and NMOs. The Goals and objectives: are to strengthen NMO leadership within IFMSA and Empower NMO leaders in: Decision making, Conflict & team Management, Project management, External Representation, Learn Advocacy skills and strategies, it also aims to provide tools to help develop new and experienced NMOs.

Regional Meeting Check in Every delegate will go through a Check in process with the Organizing Committee (OC), from here, they will check if everything is correct with the payments and the registration. No delegate will be able to check in if finances are not solved with the OC treasurer. The room keys and name badges will be given during this process. What not to forget: Your identification will be asked during this process, to make everything faster and easier for the delegates and the OC, we recommend having a “head of delegation” that will collect all IDs, and distribute the keys and badges to the delegations.
Open Ceremony The Open Ceremony will be the inauguration of our Regional Meeting, it will be held in the main salon of the Dazzler Hotel, and there we will officially start the Americas Regional Meeting.

SC/President sessions This stands for Standing Committee and President sessions. During this time, there will be parallel sessions for each committee. They will all be in the main venue, the SMU. If you are not sure what sessions to attend, make sure to discuss it with your delegation beforehand. We do recommend you to stay in the same sessions during the Regional Meeting, since several sessions are divided into different days. What not to forget: In IFMSA we have 6 standing committees; SCORA, SCOPH, SCORP, SCOPE, SCORE, and SCOME. During IFMSA events, Presidents sessions are usually held. If you are still unsure about the content of the sessions, or you haven’t decided which one to attend, we strongly recommend you to read the session’s survival kits that will be sent during the first week of January.
The recommended attire is formal clothes. What not to forget: Remember to bring your National or National Member Organization flag to take awesome pictures and long lasting memories with other delegations and delegates. Punctuality is a must since we will have external invites in the event.
Transportation to Venue

The venue and the hotel are close to each other, but they are not in the same place. The OC will provide transportation from and to the venue everyday on selected times, if you miss the bus, there are other alternatives to get to the venue, they are described in the “transportation” item of this survival kit What not to forget: Punctuality. We want to start all sessions on time, so we strongly recommend delegations to have “time keepers” to check if everyone from the delegation
Americas’ team meeting/NMO hours The agenda provides this space for all delegations to gather and discuss the daily activities. We recommend you to use this time to discuss your sessions, plan the daily events ahead and divide tasks within your delegations. The Americas team also reunites during this time. If you want to have any member of the Team of Officials or the Regional Team in your NMO hour someday, make sure to contact us beforehand so we can plan that out. What not to forget: Settle the exact time and place with your delegates during day one. Please notice, Internet is sometimes limited during IFMSA events because of large amount of connected devices.

Regional Meeting Training Sessions The Capacity Building team of the Regional meeting, together with the TNT and TOT participants will prepare awesome training sessions for the regional meeting attendees. The topics will be published during the Regional meeting, and participants will have to register on the sessions. We strongly recommend you to attend this sessions, since they will provide invaluable knowledge and skills to the participants. IFMSA considers capacity building a key topic. What not to forget: Don’t forget to register early and on time, since the sessions usually have limited spots. Make sure to save yours in your favorite session by registering early.
Theme event The theme event for our Regional Meeting is Health Equity, a very relevant topic for our region, one of the region with the highest inequity rates of the world. As Medical students, we need to take a strong stance in this matter and actively engage in the efforts to make our region a healthier, more equitable one. As medical students, and future young doctors, it is our duty to learn and participate in all regional efforts to make this topic a regional priority. We will be sharing the list of speakers and externals in the following weeks. We really hope you enjoy, and actively participate in these sessions, which are a relevant part of the Regional Meeting What not to forget: All sessions of the meeting will be in English, since that’s the official language of the Federation. Make sure to prepare questions and actively engage in the discussions.
Joint sessions Joint sessions will be an opportunity to share a session with a parallel standing committee.

Use this opportunity to learn a bit more about other Standing Committees of IFMSA, and how all our committees can work together on different topics. The topics of these sessions will be shared on the session’s survival kits that will be sent on the first week of January. Activities Fair The activities fair is your chance to share your National activities with the rest of the region. Present your best activities, projects and ideas with the rest of the Americas members, to collect ideas and replicate your activity in other Americas countries. There will be a “Best activity fair stand of the region” , “The most original activity”, and some other prices that will be announced on spot, The winners will be selected by a jury of selected International IFMSA representatives. Each NMO is free to present several activities, but please notice you will need to apply for the “activities fair call” that will be sent by the IFMSA Vice President for Activities. What not to forget: Make your stand rock! you will have a table and space to present a poster, and you may bring stickers, a laptop with slides or whatever you feel like adding to your stand to make your activity stand out!
Activities Presentation Do you have a national activity that you love and you wished all regional presidents heard about it? Use this opportunity to present your activity in the regional plenary, in front of the region. There will be limited spots, and those activities with great national and regional impact will be selected to be presented. The best presented activity will win the “Best activity of the region” price. Each NMO will only be able to present one activity, make sure is the one that makes your NMO proud

Regional Meeting What not to forget: The same activity can be presented in both, the activities fair and the activities presentation, but remember that the modality is different. The first one is with a stand, in a fair with several other activities being presented simultaneously, and the second one will be an exposition, in front of the regional plenary.
Poster Fair The poster fair will be the chance of America’s members to create a poster to present your national reality of a topic related to the Regional meeting theme event: Health Equity. Please notice there will also be a call for the poster fair, and interested members will have to apply for it. The theme event topic is very broad, so we are providing plenty of opportunities for participants to expose a national reality related to , Health Equity: Indigenous health? Medical curriculum? Health systems? Trade agreements impact on our region? you go for it, and the region will be there to see your poster and engage in active discussions with other regional members. Please notice we will also have a jury, and a “best poster fair” price.

Plenary The regional plenary will be the opportunity for all presidents and delegations to get together discuss and and make decisions for our region. Our plenary is normed under our Internal Operating Guidelines (IOGs), and even though it’s not officially a plenary, since the only binding plenary IFMSA has take place the General Assemblies, we consider this an excellent opportunity to rehearse plenary dynamics to get involved with other presidents from the region. What not to forget: Bring your flags! and make sure your complete delegation is there to participate in this amazing opportunity. Make sure to discuss how a plenary is conducted during your NMO hours, discuss whats a procedural motion is, and when to place them, what’s a statement, a point of information and a point of order! make sure to ask for the help of the regional team, we will be glad to give you a plenary 101 on the NMO hours.

The venue for all sessions will be at the Sindicato Medico del Uruguay (SMU), the headquarters of the Uruguay’s Medical Association. Americas Regional Meeting
Theme Event “The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) in October 2014 adopted a regional Strategy for Universal Access to Health and Universal Health Coverage, which expresses the commitment of PAHO Member States to strengthen health systems, expand access to comprehensive quality health services, provide financial protection, and adopt integrated, comprehensive policies to address the social determinants of health and health inequities.” Universal health coverage has been at the center of the global public health agenda in recent years. As one of the key goals of health systems, universal health coverage provides countries a way to fight against unmet needs and health inequities. Did you know that the Latin American region faces the greatest socioeconomic and health inequalities in the world? Despite the improvement in the recent years, there are still many differences among people’s health depending on their gender, where they live, their level of education, and whether they are rich or poor, etc.
Health Equity in the Americas The theme event will be in charge of the Uruguayan Physicians Union (SMU) and the National Academy of Medicine.
Health equity, universal health coverage and social determinants of health have been a major topic of the global health in the last years. Multiple stakeholders in the field of public health have been advocating the examination of policies and initiatives aimed at achieving health equity and universal health coverage.
