The European Newsletter was started by our predecessors and has been a tool to keep the european medical students updated and engaged in the work of IFMSA in Europe. We would like to continue their work and present you the first Edition for the term 2015-2016.

The move from Training Support Division to Capacity Building: What is all the fuss about?

In the recent months, since I have become the Capacity Building Regional Assistant, many people have asked me; ‘’what is capacity building? How is it different from the training support division?’’ It is a perfectly valid question. I have certainly asked myself (and others) the same. Sometimes I still do!

However, working in the division, I got a bit more insight and clarity as to what is what.

In truth, it is quite simple. Let us begin with the mission of CB in the IFMSA. We have to realise that capacity building is a process that is going on in every sustainable organisation.

It simply means that there is some sort of passing of knowledge going on within the organisation, be it from peer to peer, from more experienced members to newbies, through soft skill training, externals etc.

In short, any kind of activity that empowers the members or equips them with new skills, knowledge, experience. It is one of the major components of IFMSA activities, next to external representation and networking. It is going on in the work of Standing Committees, soft skills training, various workshops (pre-GAs, pre-RMs, SRTs) etc. As you might imagine: IT IS HUGE. Development of the European Region

At the beginning of our term we felt the need to built upon the work of the previous European Team. They put a lot of focus upon improving our External Representation work as well as our Internal Operating Guidelines and Regulations. As you start your term you always have a lot of ideas and suggestions that you want to put into action, but it is all meaningless if it does not meet the needs of the region you are representing. To make sure our ideas were in line with the needs of Europe we created a survey that was filled out by almost every European National Member Organizations (NMO), which led to a plan of action.

One of the things we focused on were the different capacities of our NMOs and how we can help to coordinate NMO collaboration to improve each other’s work. Therefore we focused on different areas that we considered important to the work of a NMO, consulting

them on the areas they would like to improve and where they see their strengths. The idea was that at the end of our term we created something that you can use to improve in the areas you wish. The evaluation took us longer than expected but we feel we came up with something useful.

Step 1: We are in the process of creating a follow-up template for the different areas and to ask specific questions to gain further information of „good practice“ and encountered problems. We would like to invite anybody who is interested to contribute to this process.

Our journey starts back in September 2014. This is when everything started, when the decision to try was taken. This is when HelMSIC set up an organizing committee of 23 people and trusted us to give shape to an unfulfilled dream and make it a realistic goal. The EuRegMe 2016 should finally come to Greece!

Working for such a long time, for something so specific definitely needs dedication, strong motivation and demands time, energy and teamwork. Lots of online meetings, emails, phone calls, documents, booklets, reports.

Lots of disappointments, fights, misunderstandings and at the same time lots of achievements, laughs and -mainly virtualgroup hugs. Keeping our spirit and motivation high was and still is one of the main difficulties we have to face.

When your goal is so longterm, that you will see it taking shape 2 years later, you have to get satisfaction and be proud of your small achievements, taking place along the way.

When you finally find the host city or the accommodation, when you decide what the topic of the theme event will be, when a sponsor finally says “yes” or when you just find the perfect body paints for the neon party!

But mainly, the most valuable inspiration that you can get comes from your own team,

from some kind words, from a motivational post on your facebook group, from a silly photo that someone sent or a face to face meeting that you had.

Moreover, you will have the chance to experience a totally original structure of our Theme Event on Preventive Medicine, which will include interactive workshops and parallel healthrelated activities during the breaks, apart from the essential lectures and keynote speeches.

Last but not least, a big team of volunteers informed about all the procedures and trained on organization and communication skills will be there to answer all your questions and support the actualization of the meeting.

The first time we realised that this was turning real was in Denmark, when we got elected. All of a sudden, this was becoming true, our effort for the candidature bore fruit, the EuRegMe ‘16 was ours! Our feelings were mixed; enthusiasm and satisfaction that we finally made it and at the same time anxiety and worry about what we had to do next.

It took us a lot of time to get over the first shock and realize that it really happened. The work had to get doubled, the agreements should be made, the contracts should be signed.

The sense of responsibility was now even bigger. The European region of IFMSA had trusted us to be the host of its most important meeting, where medical students from all over Europe would gather to share experiences and ideas on their way of becoming better future healthcare leaders and professionals and that’s why we had to be even more focused and hardworking since then. post-EuRegMe! Pre-EuRegMe will be held in Kastoria, one of the most picturesque cities of Greece, located 2.30 hours from Thessaloniki. Built around a lake, the landscapes in this small city of Greece will give you the perfect inspiration to wake up for your trainings every day. As for the post-EuRegMe, there is not a lot to say about Chalkidiki, you just have to see a picture to realize that it’s actually a heaven on earth. Βreathtaking landscapes, beautiful crystal clear waters, sandy cosmopolitan or secluded beaches and vivid nightlife!

What more to ask to wash out your post-EuRegMe blues? Oh yes, a full program made up by our organizing committee and volunteers, a shuttle bus which will take us anywhere we want and a group of volunteers to accompany and have fun with you!

Feeling SECSE in Serbia, 2015

In the modern times that we are all living in, numerous challenges and risk factors have raised the question of a need for an adequate way of preventing people from indulging in risky behaviors and preserving not only their physical health, but also mental well-being, and encouraging them to freely express and be accepting of other people’s gender identity and sexual orientation. At IFMSA-Serbia we firmly believe that in order to provide and deliver effective education, you have to start early, which is why we often approach not only students and high schoolers, but we even work with elementary school pupils!

The focal point of the whole event was Method Exchange Sessions in which delegates from each NMO had individual sessions where they presented their methods and projects currently being used or developed in their home countries. The Theme Event was “Sexual and Reproductive Health of Youth”, with emphasis on reproductive health of adolescents, sexual education and habits of young, STDs, contraception, abuse of the “morning after pill”, adolescent pregnancies, adolescent abortions, and importance of sexual education in young. The participants had a

chance to take part in trainings and workshops held by leading health experts, professors and doctors in Serbia. And in the small breaks that we could snatch from the busy agenda, we even got to experience the beauty of the golden autumn in the Serbian mountains.

After five days of dedicated work, it was unfortunately time to say goodbye. But with the

creative spirits of not only other SECSE delegates, but also our NECSE observers, we hope that everyone has already found a way or two for improving their methods!

Human Rights Day 2015 in Greece

It is generally maintained that Human Rights are the Rights we all have, just by being humans.

But how come we never protect them? Blatant violations of these rights occur every single minute while at the same time, freedoms which were supposed to be a given for everyone, are being violated. For this reason, HelMSIC took action.

In these stations there were people depicting roles, giving continuity to the story and each station was different.

An Exchange in Italy

More than 3 months has passed since I came back to the Motherland. Watching the photos from my exchange, I realized that I had left a small peace of my soul somewhere in Catania. This amazing traineeship in Italian medical system, great excursions and crazy parties made this exchange unforgettable.

Catania and after this August we became if not family than at least the brotherhood. We were placed to 5 different hospitals.

Every morning we used to face medical adventures and then, during the lunch, while tasting Sicilian pizza with oranchino we were sharing the new knowledge.
