WELCOME MESSAGE

Dearest SCORA members, SCORA community is growing and growing and your amazing efforts into creating a world where every individual is empowered to exercise their sexual and reproductive health and rights free from stigma and discrimination, are what brings us together. All those efforts are something worth sharing and we’d like to provide a platform to do so. In addition to that, aiming to establish frequent and efficient communication with you and developing at the same time a channel to hold the International Team accountable and increase transparency, we came up with the initiative of issuing a SCORA bimonthly newsletter where you find the most relevant information in the same place and you can get inspired by what’s going on in SCORA all around the globe. We hope you engage and enjoy the reading! Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to reach out to any International Team member for further clarifications and comments. Hugs, Lalu, SCORA Director 2019-2020 On behalf of the International Team and SCORA Programme Coordinators 2019-2020

What to do after the ARM?

AFRICAN REGIONAL MEETING The ARM was held in Lilongwe, Malawi from the 15th till the 22nd of December. It has the participation of 13 delegates from all over Africa. The sessions were a combination of knowledge, theories, practical part and a small pitch to demonstrate the level of understanding and engagement of the participants. The agendas for our SCORA sessions were based on the prevalence of health issues arising now in the region, with paying special consideration to geographical, social and cultural differences within the region. Achievements of the ARM: 1) Improvement in the understanding of SCORA and SRHR among participants. 2) The ARM served as platform for SRHR SCORA members to share and exchange ideas within and after the ARM. 3) Noticeable improvement in the knowledge of participants on trending SRHR topics and latest advances regionally and internationally. 4) Highlighting attention to other SCORA focus areas. 5) Empowered participants with necessary skills to take action on SRHR issues locally, nationally and internationally.

1) Comprehensive Sexual education in the curriculum should be added and highly advertised in the region. 2) Address stigma on a wider base: raising awareness about HIV, trying to overcome the stigma barrier to even seek preventive methods, treatment and counseling. 3) Work on national policies with NGOs: Enforce the laws that criminalize actions like GBV, FGM and child marriage. 4) Support vulnerable groups: work with institutions that provide support to HIV patients and women suffering GBV. 5) Governmental and non governmental co-operation: In order to establish any community work, you have to get support to guarantee an effective impact and sustainability. 6) Research: activities organized accordingly to the prevalence of issue, monitoring and evaluation built on evidences. 7) Increase social media and online platforms campaigns and awareness activating SCORA Facebook page. 8) Community Awareness: More focus and attention to community awareness and outreach approach to the rural areas trying to overcome the obstacle of centralization.

What's next...? Life after AmRM

AMERICAN REGIONAL MEETING The AmRm was held in Curitiba, Brazil, from January 6th to 11th. It had the participation of 12 delegates from all the Americas and for the first time, it had the participation of all the sub regions of our beautiful region, including the Caribbean. The sessions that took place within the agenda, were prepared according to the social, cultural and political reality that is lived in the countries of the Americas today. With the aim of creating a more entertaining environment and debate among the participants, the sessions had a methodology based on NO SESSIONS THAT LOOK LIKE UNIVERSITY CLASSES, so all had a practical part, adapted to daily life in the Americas; migrant caravan simulations, SWG, debates, interactive games, testimonials, timelines, etc. All this was done, so that participants could better understand the reality of our countries and be able to equip themselves with the tools and knowledge necessary to fight for SRHRs in their respective countries.

Achievements of the AmRM: 1) ST with representation of all subregions of the Americas 2) Participants from all sub regions of the Americas 3) Two proposals for collaborative work between NMOs 4) Two SWGs on the way (on sexual harassment and gender-based violence) 5) Three Joint sessions, two SCORASCOPH (Pregnancies in adolescents, as a public health problem, IT's in the Americas) and one SCORA-SCORP (Taboos and myths about menstruation, in the indigenous populations of the Americas) 6) Creation of new CB spaces within the region... SRTs and SCORA workshops on the way!

EUROPEAN REGIONAL MEETING Where: Vilnius, Lithuania When: 23-27 April The European Regional Meeting is under the theme Social accountability and Health Workforce. From addressing Regional Priorities to going in-depth on our beloved SCORA topics, we hope that the SCORA Sessions in EuRegMe will blow your mind! If you seek to join the Sessions Team, keep your eyes on the lookout - the call will be out pretty soon!

pre-EuRegMe Unfortunately, for this EuRegMe there are no SCORA workshops performed during pre-EuRegMe. However, you can apply for these workshops instead: - AMET: The Medical Students’ Vision of the European Health Workforce - Climate Action for Peace: An International Training on Disaster Medicine - Global Health Advocates: The future of European Advocates (GHA: European Advocates) Mental Health for Medical Practitioners

SCORA X-CHANGE HOSTS SCORA X-Change is a unilateral exchange focused on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights. It aims to build the capacity of SCORAngels around the world through workshops, seminars, clinical clerkships and many more activities that develop soft skills and SRHR knowledge. It's also intercultural learning and international experience. The call for participants will be open soon, but before that - check out the proposals here.

HOW TO ENROLL A PROJECT UNDER IFMSA? “Thinking Globally, Acting Locally” has always been a slogan for IFMSA. But the question that we will answer in this article is how to connect what we, as medical students. do locally with what we wish to implement locally? The answer to this question was found a couple of years ago which is adopting the IFMSA Programs system. The system that will promote NMOs collaboration not only to IFMSA but to each other as well. By enrolling your activity, you actually tell the world that “Hey! I made an achievement, and I’m letting you know about it”. With more Activity Coordinators sharing (enrolling) their activities, the impact IFMSA makes becomes more visible and more importantly, the more we learn from each other. So, have you ever asked how to enroll your activity? Well, it’s quite a common question, however, the process is really easy to follow. In the following lines, we will learn all about it. First of all, you need to make sure which program to enroll your activity under. IFMSA has 13 programs, with each targeting a specific set of Focus Areas, in which you can fit your activity. The focus areas a specific, but quite flexible as well. You can find the focus areas of each IFMSA Program on this page. Next, you should fill in the Enrollment Candidature Form and get it signed and stamped by your NMO President. This candidature form helps us make sure the enrolled activity is actually organized by a living NMO, because you know we can’t attribute to IFMSA something not done by IFMSA or one of its NMOs. when you fill in the candidature form, please make sure to write the name of the activity in English and make sure you write the correct name of the program you are applying to enroll your activity under. You can find the Candidature Form here.

Further comes the most important step, which is getting your enrollment application form submitted. In this form, you will find 3 sections. The first section aims at receiving your consent for GDPR related reasons. In the second, you will be delivering your activity related general information, such as the timeline, attaching your signed and stamped Candidature Form and choosing the program you wish to enroll your activity under. The third section should include all your activity related information; such as problem statement that should be supported with some evidence, objectives that need to be SMART, indicators of success for each objective, Evaluation plan to ensure you fulfilled your objectives and met your indicators, the implementation Methodology that we expect to be thorough to help interested other Activity Coordinators to replicate your activity in their NMO. You can always find the Enrollment Form in this document.

How to

Enroll Your Activity

under an IFMSA Program

Select the program according to the Focus Areas in this page

Fill in this Enrollment Candidature Form and get it signed and stamped by your NMO President

Fill in this Activity Enrollment Form thoroughly

Submit the form and stay tuned for the Program Coordinator's response within

As simple as it is, this is how to enroll an activity under an IFMSA Program. It’s the same process for all programs regardless its Focus Area and there is no specific deadline for enrollment. This means you can actually enroll your activity anytime over the term, and even before, during or after your activity is concluded. Yet to mention, each enrolled activity needs to be reported within one month from its completion. How to report your enrolled activity will be the topic of a coming article in the following newsletter.

90-90-90: BEYOND THE NUMBERS!

Article by Arsène Koumbem PC for HIV, AIDS and other STIs

By 2020, 90% diagnosed, 90% on treatment, 90% virally suppressed! UNAIDS in adopting this international strategy aimed to motivate the countries of the world to take a big leap forward in HIV Response. The different communities really take ownership of this strategy and make efforts to allow these objectives to be achieved. However, despite all these efforts, the big question is this: more than these numbers, what should we see?

By 2020, 90% of all People Living with HIV (PLHIV) will have known their HIV status. At first glance, a very ambitious goal in a world where the stigma towards PLHIV is a sad reality. This fact added to the lack of real information on new antiretroviral therapy (ART) discourage many people to take the test to know their status. Then, the action of several National Member Organizations (NMOs) of IFMSA and other associations / Non-Governmental Organisations takes on its full meaning: it is necessary to educate the general population and to convince every single person to carry out their screening test. Still with the aim of promoting these screenings, WHO has proposed a self-testing approach allowing people to collect their sample, perform and interpret their HIV test results themselves. But so far only 77 of the 123 countries in the World (62.6%) have adopted HIV self-testing.

By 2020, 90% of all people diagnosed with HIV infection will receive sustained ART. This second point shows the need to work with all components of society in order to erase inequalities in the supply of care for diagnosed people. The different social groups have specificities which must be taken into account in the development of our local actions. In Togo for example, an NGO created an approach to support sex workers within the Medico Social Center by integrating the concept of “mediators managing individual cases”. Each sex worker who is referred to the Medico Social Center for a screening test is automatically paired with a mediator who will aim to reassure him/her and facilitate his/her enrolment in the care circuit. In 3 years of practice, the goal of 90% on treatment has been reached within the Medico Social Center. Here is a good example to follow in the process of using specific methods to each component of the community. By 2020, 90% of all people receiving ART should have viral suppression. Last but not the least: to ensure the quality and accessibility of treatment on the one hand and the observation of patients in taking ART on the other hand. This last point inevitably goes through the simplification of ART combinations as well as their accessibility, allowing PLHIV to obtain them easily, confidentially and to experience the least negative side effects due to the drugs. The statistics provided by UNAIDS for the year 2018 presented the global results of 79-62-53. It is therefore important that we increase our efforts by two-fold in order to eradicate HIV by 2030. Do not hesitate to contact hivaids@ifmsa.org for any initiatives that you would like to plan or implement within your NMOs.
