CONNECT WITH US The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) was founded in 1988 on the campus of Butler University as a provider of study abroad programming for U.S. undergraduates. Over time, IFSA-Butler has maintained its independence as a non-profit organization and its close connection with Butler University. The organization has also preserved its foundational commitment to providing high-quality study abroad opportunities with integrated academic guidance and individualized support to foster student success.

I chose Costa Rica because I wanted to do something different. At my university, most people who study abroad in Latin America choose Buenos Aires or Santiago, but I wanted to go a little more off the grid. Also, Costa Rica had great outdoor adventure opportunities which I took full advantage of.

INTERNSHIPS ABROAD Immerse yourself in the professional culture of another country while establishing an international network of colleagues and demonstrating your ability to navigate a global, multicultural business world.
DIRECTED RESEARCH With the help of a faculty guide, you will create a research project that will serve as a tangible and meaningful product that showcases your commitment to your academic topic.
COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Community-based learning opportunities carry academic credit while providing a chance for active involvement in your host community.
VOLUNTEER Give back to your adopted community abroad through meaningful work as a volunteer. Opportunities are available in a wide variety of interests, with activities ranging from a single-day project to a commitment for an entire semester.
EXAMINE COMMUNITY IDENTITY Our exclusive Exploring Community & Culture (C&C) course offers you the opportunity to experience your host city in a way most visitors never can. This 3-credit option fosters intercultural dialogue and a greater understanding of global society. Some programs offer an on-site class, while students in other locations can join a global cohort of other IFSA-Butler students worldwide by taking the class online. Using your host city as your laboratory, C&C will help you experience and examine cultural as well as personal identity.
JOIN A COMMUNITY Wondering how you might make local friends and actually feel more like a local? Every IFSA-Butler program gives students the opportunity to engage in a community of their choosing. Whether an on-campus club or a group based in the wider host community, IFSA-Butler programs facilitate true integration with the culture.

AFFORD YOUR JOURNEY FINANCIAL AID
Many students don’t realize that financial aid can help pay for study abroad. Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and PLUS loans can apply to your IFSA-Butler program. College grants and scholarships, Perkins Loans, state grants and loans, and 529 plans may also be used for study abroad, but you’ll need to ask your home campus financial aid office about their policies for transferring these types of aid.
We believe that study abroad is within reach for every student, so we’re committed to helping you identify funding sources. We can assist you with your financial aid transfer, and we offer a wide range of scholarships and grants to help defray the cost of studying abroad.
VETERANS BENEFITS
If you are a recipient of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, you may use your tuition benefits for study abroad. This process can differ among U.S. colleges and universities, so you will want to start the conversation early with your home campus study abroad office to determine the best billing procedure for your institution.
WORK-TO-STUDY GRANT PROGRAM
Gain some work experience and earn spending money while you are abroad! With the Work-to-Study grant, students complete projects for IFSA-Butler in exchange for a stipend between $300 and $1,000, depending on the scope and involvement of the projects completed. These grant opportunities are available to all students, with special consideration to those already on federal work study at their home campus. Work-to-Study positions are determined by current and frequently changing project needs at IFSA-Butler, but could include: • Marketing and communications • Graphic design • Photography and videography • Peer advising • Research • Creative writing

Studying abroad in Buenos Aires helped me become far more self-sufficient when it came to academics. There were often instances were assignments were explained in less detail than I was used to at my small liberal arts school in the U.S. I became a far more efficient communicator, got out of my comfort zone of interacting with new people, and learned to chill out and just go with the flow.

CINEMA STUDIES
A Concentration of the Argentine Universities Program CONCENTRATION OVERVIEW Argentina is passionate about cinema, and its movies are a gateway to understanding Argentine culture, habits, language and challenges. The Cinema in Argentina program immerses you into the world of visual arts in Buenos Aires and examines social issues through the creation of audiovisual work. Based at the prestigious Fundación Universidad del Cine (FUC) in the historic San Telmo district, the program integrates university coursework with rotating film production workshops where students observe Argentine movies as they progress through the various stages of creating a film. No previous film experience is required.

CONCENTRATION OVERVIEW The directed research concentration provides IFSA-Butler students with the opportunity to study in great detail current events and issues of importance to individual countries, Latin America as a whole and the global society, alongside renowned faculty and researchers. The concentration is designed individually for each participant on the basis of past academic work, research skills and area of personal interest. The concentration combines group classes on methodology and individual meetings dedicated exclusively to addressing each student’s specific research topic.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PRACTICE AND ANALYSIS OF ARGENTINE FILM This seminar offers an introduction to the language and analysis of audiovisual texts based on Argentine documentary film production. The course addresses the technical and historical processes that led to the use of a specific audiovisual language with unique local features. It also comprises a series of documentary audiovisual exercises designed for the students to put in practice the knowledge they have acquired and to develop their own personal approach.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY This course provides students with the theoretical and practical tools required to conduct a research study. Students will focus on a series of topics, including framing a working hypothesis, searching for bibliographical material, analyzing primary and secondary sources, fieldwork, evaluating the data collected and presenting the conclusions.

SEXUAL DIVERSITY, ETHNIC MINORITIES AND GENDER IN ARGENTINA This course introduces students to an interdisciplinary field of historical and actual analysis on feminism, ethnic minorities and sexual diversity in Argentina, articulated by gender studies. The goal is to analyze the production, imports, exports, circulation and exposition of social and political practices and cultural identities of generic, sexual and ethnic differences.

HUMAN RIGHTS: GENOCIDE
A Concentration of the Argentine Universities Program CONCENTRATION OVERVIEW Argentina is recognized worldwide for its policies in defense of human rights following the principles of memory, truth and justice. The Human Rights: Genocide concentration takes a critical review of the genocidal experiences of the 20th century, with particular emphasis on Latin America and Argentina. Learn firsthand about genocide in Argentina from Professor Daniel Feierstein, the Director of the Center for Genocide Studies and Master Program on Cultural Diversity at the Universidad Tres de Febrero. He incorporates his experiences as an advisor for the United Nations on the Argentine National Human Rights Plan, allowing students the opportunity to examine how far Argentina has come since 1983 and far it still has to go.

CONCENTRATION OVERVIEW Argentina has a rich and dynamic literary atmosphere, and a renaissance in poetry has emerged since the last Novade of the 20th century. IFSA-Butler’s literature concentration students will focus on four areas of study: creative writing, journalism, literary translation and editing. Dr. Martín Kohan, renowned Argentine author and recipient of the Premio Herralde de Novela, teaches the Topics in Contemporary Argentine Literature course.

HUMAN RIGHTS IN ARGENTINA The course covers issues unique to Argentina, including racial issues, the historical experience of Argentina and the genealogy of the Argentine genocide experience, the 1976 military coup, impunity laws and amnesty struggles. The course also analyzes current issues such as economic and social rights, police violence, prisons and antidiscriminatory campaigns.

The literature concentration incorporates practical work experience in literature, creative writing, editing and journalism fields. Students choose between a fieldwork experience (in a publishing company or a cultural magazine) or attending a writing workshop with local Argentine authors. In both cases students analyze their experiences through a final paper.
Linguistics
Translation
The objective of this course is to expose students to a level of linguistic information that will allow them to consolidate their competency in Spanish and become familiar with other important aspects of contemporary Spanish linguistics. Students will begin with an exploration of the sounds of Spanish, followed by a discussion of several aspects of Spanish syntax and morphology. Finally, there will be a brief introduction to regional and social variations throughout the Americas and especially Argentina.
This course aims to help students improve their grasp of the Spanish language by completing assignments based on translations between Spanish and English, emphasizing grammatical issues and vocabulary, particular structures, record variety and dialects, etc. It also gives students an up-close examination of the world of translation.

The most important lesson I learned from study abroad is the importance of communicating effectively. For me personally, this experience helped me solidify my decision to become an interpreter. When I went to Chile I already had a fairly high fluency in Spanish, but I still had situations in which I could not communicate with those around me. I want to follow a career in interpreting to help those with even lower English proficiency in situations where communication really is necessary.

Though Costa Rica has only 0.03 percent of the world’s landmass, it has 5 percent of the world’s diversity. You can find over 900 species of birds in Costa Rica, more than in all of North America! Costa Rica does not even have an army and it is regularly ranked among the happiest nations in the world. This country is filled with well-being people, and as the locals would say: living here is ¡Pura Vida! The previous night I had fallen asleep on the beach, and had missed seeing the sea turtle laying her eggs. However, I was rewarded on the hike when we came across another sea turtle. IFSA-Butler’s renowned program at Universidad de La Habana first opened in 2000 and is still the best way for U.S. college students to experience the university’s challenging academics while being immersed in the beautiful and lively culture of Cuba. HAVANA Havana is the capital city and leading commercial center of Cuba. PROGRAM LOCATIONS Rehearsing Change fall semesters are based in Quito’s historical center. Students work hand-inhand with members of marginalized communities and regularly visit the Amazon region. HOUSING Housing is with a carefully selected host family, with one or two students per family. The program fee includes three meals per day.

Mérida Universities Program
MÉRIDA The capital and largest city of Yucatán, Mérida lies in sharp contrast to many Americans’ stereotypes about Mexican cities. The city is compact and tranquil, yet also a cosmopolitan center of culture in southern Mexico. It’s also famed for having a relaxed attitude and student-friendly atmosphere. Colonial Spanish architecture adds to Mérida’s beauty and personifies the city’s long history, while a thriving Mayan influence shows in the local language and dress. In your spare time, take advantage of free evening concerts and Mérida’s exciting nightlife.

Mérida, also known as “La Ciudad Blanca” because of the widespread use of white limestone and paint, is one of the safest cities in Latin America and holds the distinction of having the lowest crime rate in Mexico. It is a living laboratory of ancient cultures still present today through architecture, language and amazing cuisine with contemporary Mérida as a lively center. The city’s combination of the great Mayan civilization with Spanish colonial traces will transport you to a time and place difficult to imagine until you experience it. This program will allow you to change the single story of Mexico. Through different experiences, courses, faculty, friends, local families, travel and exposure to life here, you will be able to challenge old myths, break stereotypes and redefine identities. You will go from being a tourist to becoming a traveler; from seeing to observing and from being a bystander to making connections. IFSA-Butler will make sure you are exposed to the best cultural and academic offerings available at two outstanding local universities and also give you the opportunity to travel so you can experience diversity firsthand by contrasting some of the world’s famous archaeological sites with cities as amazing as Mexico City, Chiapas and Havana, Cuba. ACTIVITIES AND EXCURSIONS
PROFILE One of the greatest things about IFSA-Butler is that they are really good at preparing you to embark on an intercultural experience, not only a semester studying abroad. One of the things I really enjoyed about the program was the Community and Culture course. It was one of my favorite courses as we got to learn about the community we were living in and talk about culture shock, cultural differences and understand more about the place we were in. It made me reflect and think more critically about my experience abroad.
EXCURSIONS (may vary) • Five-day excursion (spring) to Cuba to understand the Caribbean influence in the Yucatán • One-day excursion to Ek-Balam, where you can see one of the best preserved Mayan grand scale masks and then swim in a cenote. Also visit the colonial city of Valladolid, an historically important and second largest city in Yucatán. • One-day excursion to the Uxmal archaeological site, believed to be the height of Mayan architecture • Three-day community immersion in a Mayan village

LIMA One of the most cosmopolitan and important capitals in South America, Lima is in a stunningly beautiful setting at the foot of the Andes surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. A modern city with colonial elegance still intact, Lima is known worldwide for its fantastic cuisine and wide variety of museums, archaeological sites and famous architectural treasures. The city’s local markets feature beautiful crafts, silver products and jewelry, and its youth-friendly entertainment attracts students from around the world. The change of pace in the Peruvian academic system allowed me to really appreciate my final semesters now that I have returned to my home college. I found certain elements of Peruvian culture to be extremely impactful, and I am intending to use them as a guiding point for my research in graduate school.

ACTIVITIES
• Trip to breathtaking Machu Picchu, starting first in colonial Cusco and also exploring the ruins of Ollantaytambo and Pisac • Trip to Caral, an ancient city dating to 3000 B.C. that was discovered in 1994 and is still being excavated today • Visit to the Huaca Pucllana, a great adobe and clay pyramid that served as an important ceremonial and administrative center for the advancement of Peruvian culture between 200 and 700 A.D. • Excursion for academic year students to the Amazon rainforest: Includes a visit to a shaman to learn about traditional medicine, a visit with the Yagua tribe, animal watching and visit to an animal sanctuary, a boat trip and a night walk in the jungle. The excursion is free for academic year students; semester 1 students also may participate for an additional fee.
