If you are a recipient of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, you may use your tuition benefits for study abroad. This process can differ among U.S. colleges and universities, so you will want to start the conversation early with your home campus study abroad office to determine the best billing procedure for your institution.

Country- and Program-Specific Scholarships IFSA-Butler offers numerous scholarships that are specific to certain programs or countries. See the Afford Your Experience section of our website for complete details. UpFront Program IFSA-Butler’s UpFront program allows you to bill certain fees to your IFSA-Butler student account. You can then pay these expenses with financial aid or with our monthly payment option.
WORK-TO-STUDY GRANT PROGRAM
Gain some work experience and earn spending money while you are abroad! With the Work-to-Study grant, students complete projects for IFSA-Butler in exchange for a stipend between $300 and $1,000, depending on the scope and involvement of the projects completed. These grant opportunities are available to all students, with special consideration to those already on federal work study at their home campus. Work-to-Study positions are determined by current and frequently changing project needs at IFSA-Butler, but could include: • Marketing and communications • Graphic design • Photography and videography • Peer advising • Research • Creative writing
FINANCIAL AID
Many students don’t realize that financial aid can help pay for study abroad. Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and PLUS loans can apply to your IFSA-Butler program. College grants and scholarships, Perkins Loans, state grants and loans, and 529 plans may also be used for study abroad, but you’ll need to ask your home campus financial aid office about their policies for transferring these types of aid.

Focus your studies on Spanish translation and linguistics in this unique concentration. Program courses designed exclusively for IFSA-Butler students complement the integrated university elective, and an optional internship provides a solid foundation for a deeper understanding of the Spanish language. Placements are at translation companies and involve translating business and marketing documents. A related seminar provides students with the theoretical concepts and tools needed to support their internship.

The University of Adelaide offers a highly competitive internship program for students with a strong academic background. Interns spend up to one day per week in their placement gaining practical experience. The major focus of the internship is a specified project on a topic relevant to both the intenship organization and to the intern’s academic and career interests. The internship culminates in a research report of approximately 7,000 words. The ANU internship allows students to experience the policy-making process at the national level. Canberra is not only the headquarters of Australia’s Federal Parliament and public service, but it also is home to Australia’s most important national associations, nongovernment organizations and lobbying groups. The University of New South Wales offers internships in business, journalism and communications. Placements are available at businesses and agencies throughout the Sydney area and are contingent on an interview upon arrival in Australia. An internship replaces one class at UNSW and is worth 4 U.S. credit hours. Interns work between 100-150 hours for the duration of the internship. UNSW offers assistance in business internship placements, but students interested in a media studies internship are required to find their own placement.

The University of Western Australia offers internships with non-profit, community and government organizations through the McCusker Centre for Citizenship. Internships are open to all study abroad students, and the internship replaces one class at UWA.
The University of Wollongong offers internships through the university’s Faculty of Commerce. This internship is designed for business majors and provides an opportunity for students to integrate and apply their knowledge in an industry context. Business internship placements are available in marketing, accounting, research analysis, human resources and public relations. Placements are contingent on an interview upon arrival in Australia.
CHILEAN UNIVERSITIES PROGRAM, VALPARAISO
LOCATION: Valparaíso
INTERNSHIP AVAILABILITY: Semester 1, semester 2

Interns work four hours per week and complete 24 hours with a university professor. These sessions enhance a student’s community experience by tying it to broader issues key to understanding Chilean society. The coursework requires written journals and reports, as well as oral presentations, all in Spanish, related to the internship.

Students may choose to complete an internship in China’s commercial center as one of their electives. Internships have an international business focus, depending on student interest and availability of host organizations. Previous participants have interned with Chinese, joint-venture and foreign-owned financial management firms, software development companies, travel services agencies and garment manufacturers. Supervised by a faculty advisor, interns spend approximately 10 hours per week at the internship site and complete a final academic paper with an accompanying presentation. Interns are not required to have experience in Chinese language but will find that a lack of proficiency may limit placement options.

SPANISH REQUIREMENT 4 semesters of university-level Spanish or equivalent
This internship option places students with a nonprofit organization. Possibilities include educational and recreational programs for youth with disabilities, environmental education and recycling projects, and a community literacy initiative.
Combine education courses and hands-on classroom interactions with a unique cultural experience. This program is ideal for future Spanish or ESL teachers, or for any education major with advanced Spanish skills who wants to prepare for the increasingly diverse U.S. classroom. Students take core courses in advanced Spanish and comparative education, as well as courses in education or other subjects at Universidad Nacional. An optional non-credit workshop preparing students for the ACTFL test is also available. All courses are taught in Spanish.

ECUADOR

Rehearsing Change is a fair trade study abroad program that pairs program students with local participants as one cohort that collaborates on creative projects in order to confront global challenges on a local level. Students split the semester between the capital city of Quito and the Amazon rainforest. Internship placement possibilities include teaching English, elementary school assistance, public health, agriculture and social entrepreneurship.

The University of East Anglia Fall Drama Semester allows drama or theatre majors who are studying at UEA for the full year to spend the fall semester as interns in London. Interns work with a London theatre company and complete an academic project based on their work.

INDIA
In Pune, students have the opportunity to participate in a full-time, four-week internship to fulfill their field-based requirement. Interns are placed in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and companies working in the fields of microfinance, informatics, gender and women’s issues, entrepreneurship, environmental sustainability, public health and education. All projects have a specific academic focus, and students must enroll in at least one related elective course. Supervised by a faculty advisor, interns spend a minimum of 155 hours at the internship site and complete a final academic paper or project with an accompanying presentation.

The University of Westminster offers a wide array of internship opportunities in London. Internship assignments are usually 15-20 hours per week, spread out over two or three days. Placements are subject to a successful interview upon arrival. Internships are available in a variety of businesses and organizations.
As part of this program’s field-based requirement, students who choose the internship option are placed at businesses and organizations across Pune and work on issues related to social and economic development. Internships are open to any major and are available in a wide range of areas. Past placements have included local grade schools, public health nonprofits, biotech developers, microfinance firms and environmental conservation organizations. Supervised by a faculty advisor, interns spend a minimum of 155 hours at the internship site and complete a final academic paper or project with an accompanying presentation.

IFSA-Butler will also advise applicants about the process for obtaining a police clearance for Northern Ireland before departure.

Stranmillis University College, Northern Ireland’s acclaimed teacher education college, allows U.S. students to have supervised practical placements in schools throughout Belfast. Placements are available in elementary, secondary, early childhood, and health and leisure education. Students supplement their semester with courses at Stranmillis.
Supervised internships for a variety of academic interests are available each semester. Interns contribute eight hours a week to a partner organization and earn 1 U.S. semester credit hour. Placement organizations include venture companies, government offices, local grade schools and community organizations.

Massey University offers communications internships on two of its campuses, Palmerston North and Wellington. The internship will enhance skills in communication, information acquisition and independent research. Placements are in the fields of communication, journalism, public relations and other related disciplines. Interns will use classroom assignments to actively reflect on the theory and practice they have learned throughout their degree. Applicants must be senior communications majors with at least one 300-level communications course completed. Preference is given to full-year students.

UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH PARLIAMENTARY INTERNSHIP

This prestigious internship program allows students to combine intensive coursework with a supervised Parliamentary internship placement. Interns are paired with a Member of Scottish Parliament (MSP), giving students unparalleled access to political life in Scotland. Participants develop a research project in partnership with their assigned MSP and supplement their internship with a curriculum of courses on Scottish politics, government, society and culture. Semester students take three courses and summer students take two courses.

An internship is an integral part of our Engage Barcelona program and is embedded in a tutorial-style seminar taught in English.
