I have dual-citizenship with the SWEDEN U.K., and my whole family is British. I’ve always wanted to spend time in DENMARK Scotland and explore my heritage, which is why I jumped at the opportunity to intern at the Scottish Parliament.

YOUR FUTURE SELF THANKS YOU

TOM CLIFTON CO-FOUNDER, ANIMOTO ST. CATHERINE’S COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD, 2001

“Study abroad gave me self-confidence for sure, but also, the ability to confront and assimilate other cultures, ideas and ways of thinking. Almost every job demands social skills, adaptation, self-awareness and the fortitude to withstand fluctuating environments. Studying abroad helps with all of these. It teaches you the skills of building trust and friendships, listening and comprehending and communicating effectively with people who don’t always understand you.”

FUTURE-FOCUSED STUDY ABROAD More than just an opportunity to see the world, our programs integrate critical lifelong skills designed to help you achieve your goals. This is the essence of Future-Focused Study Abroad. IFSA-Butler offers more than 100 dynamic study abroad programs in 53 cities across the globe. Comprehensive academic, personal and logistical support allows our students to focus on making the most of the experience. Through our local staff experts, our students develop insider knowledge of the local community. Internships, directed research options, volunteer opportunities, community-based learning and our signature Exploring Community & Culture course all facilitate critical skill development. Many of our programs are based at preeminent institutions abroad offering direct access to academic departments distinguished as leaders in their respective disciplines, while other programs offer IFSA-Butler courses taught by local experts. All programs are structured to engage students and promote growth. The choice to study abroad is one of the best decisions you can make. You are sure to thank yourself for the opportunity to interact with another culture and learn about yourself in the process.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

INTERNSHIPS ABROAD Immerse yourself in the professional culture of another country while establishing an international network of colleagues and demonstrating your ability to navigate a global, multicultural business world.

In today’s competitive job market, every ounce of experience counts. You can maximize your study abroad adventure by combining classroom work with directed research, student teaching, community-based learning, volunteering or an internship. These opportunities will give you even greater exposure to your host community, enhance your intercultural skills and look great on a resume!

DIRECTED RESEARCH With the help of a faculty guide, you will create a research project that will serve as a tangible and meaningful product that showcases your commitment to your academic topic.

STUDENT TEACHING As a future educator, you will encounter an increasingly diverse student population in the classroom. Showcase your ability to work with students from different cultures by conducting student teaching in a global setting.

COMMUNITY-BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Community-based learning opportunities carry academic credit while providing a chance for active involvement in your host community.

EXAMINE COMMUNITY IDENTITY

JOIN A COMMUNITY Wondering how you might make local friends and actually feel more like a local? Every IFSA-Butler program gives students the opportunity to engage in a community of their choosing. Whether an on-campus club or a group based in the wider host community, IFSA-Butler programs facilitate true integration with the culture.

Our exclusive Exploring Community & Culture (C&C) course offers you the opportunity to experience your host city in a way most visitors never can. This 3-credit option fosters intercultural dialogue and a greater understanding of global society. Some programs offer an on-site class, while students in other locations can join a global cohort of other IFSA-Butler students worldwide by taking the class online. Using your host city as your laboratory, C&C will help you experience and examine cultural as well as personal identity.

AFFORD YOUR JOURNEY FINANCIAL AID

Many students don’t realize that financial aid can help pay for study abroad. Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and PLUS loans can apply to your IFSA-Butler program. College grants and scholarships, Perkins Loans, state grants and loans, and 529 plans may also be used for study abroad, but you’ll need to ask your home campus financial aid office about their policies for transferring these types of aid.

We believe that study abroad is within reach for every student, so we’re committed to helping you identify funding sources. We can assist you with your financial aid transfer, and we offer a wide range of scholarships and grants to help defray the cost of studying abroad.

VETERANS BENEFITS

If you are a recipient of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, you may use your tuition benefits for study abroad. This process can differ among U.S. colleges and universities, so you will want to start the conversation early with your home campus study abroad office to determine the best billing procedure for your institution.

WORK-TO-STUDY GRANT PROGRAM

Gain some work experience and earn spending money while you are abroad! With the Work-to-Study grant, students complete projects for IFSA-Butler in exchange for a stipend between $300 and $1,000, depending on the scope and involvement of the projects completed. These grant opportunities are available to all students, with special consideration to those already on federal work study at their home campus. Work-to-Study positions are determined by current and frequently changing project needs at IFSA-Butler, but could include: • Marketing and communications • Graphic design • Photography and videography • Peer advising • Research • Creative writing

Study abroad really caused me to think more seriously about allowing time for self-reflection. Before my time abroad, I was often inclined to fill my Google Calendar to the brim with events and obligations. At Oxford, however, the abundance of unstructured time allowed me so much more independence and so much more time to think about what really matters in my life. –Susannah Wright, Rice University Worcester College, University of Oxford, 2016

Frequently rated one of the most livable cities in England, Norwich is one of the busiest commercial centers in the country. The city’s modern atmosphere lies in contrast to its long history and ancient surroundings, which include cobblestone streets, a Norman castle and cathedral, and medieval buildings. Welcome to our programmes in England. We are thrilled you have chosen England as the site of your study abroad experience and are confident you will all enjoy the unique challenges and pleasures of negotiating the cultural differences which exist between our countries. We may share (sometimes distantly) a common tongue, but we hope you will discover much that will excite and confuse, delight and challenge. Our people are even more welcoming then you have heard, we do have beautiful green fields and rainbows, and you will have wonderful conversations with people you only met five minutes ago, whether in the classroom or coffee shop. We are a nation of talkers who genuinely care about people. For our office that means we really want to support you while you are here. We do this by providing academic support so you can make the most of your time at our prestigious universities, by helping you get to grips with the culture so you can engage with people in a meaningful way, and by sharing our tried and tested insider’s tips with you so you are always one step ahead. No only this, but we organise exciting weekends away for you as well as some great local events so there’s always something to look forward to. Hard to beat eh? We look forward to welcoming you with open arms. Maria Keane, Resident Director, and all the IFSA-Butler staff in Ireland

SCOTLAND

ST. ANDREWS St. Andrews is the quintessential university town and also full of history dating back to the sixth century. Cobbled streets link the university and the town together and help to create a strong sense of community. St. Andrews is also the world-famous home of golf. Students who have a handicap that meets the standards of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club can play on the Old Course of St. Andrews for a surprisingly reasonable fee.

STIRLING Stirling’s status as a center for local government, retail and industry means there’s plenty to do in the town, and its low cost of living makes it a great choice for students who want to study abroad on a budget. The “Gateway to the Highlands,” Stirling was the setting for Scottish battles for independence. Don’t miss the many tributes to Stirling’s historic past, including the Wallace Monument, Stirling Castle and the field of Bannockburn. Stirling is less than an hour by train to world-class cities Edinburgh and Glasgow.

From the rugged and dramatic mountains of the Highlands to the ancient, seaside home of golf at St. Andrews, to the historic and picturesque location of Stirling to the buzz of Edinburgh and Glasgow, there is much to explore and learn. SCOTLAND CO-CURRICULAR

EXCURSIONS, ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

PROFILE My time abroad influenced my academics and personal relationships greatly. Due to the different educational system in the UK and the high level of expectations, my work back at my home university has been more independently driven and I have become more focused on research in the areas that I am passionate about. I also make more of an effort to cultivate friendships with others, hosting dinner parties and spearheading a weekly reading group as my time abroad was filled with these rewarding social activities. -Maria Noel, Gustavus Adolphus College University of Edinburgh, 2015

FALL EXCURSIONS

• Three-day Highland weekend: Students take guided tours throughout the stunning Highlands, visit a historic whiskey distillery, see a display at one of Scotland’s last working sheep dog farms, and tour the magical Loch Ness and Culloden, the site of the last ever battle to be fought on British soil

SPRING EXCURSIONS

• Three-day visit to the Argyll Forest on the West coast of Scotland, one of Scotland’s most beautiful national parks. Activities include the opportunity to kayak, hike and cave while exploring some of Scotland’s most breathtaking landscapes. • Three-day excursion to the Isle of Skye, which is regularly voted one of the most beautiful islands in the world! Students visit one of the last working sheepdog farms in Scotland, climb the Old Man of Storr, wash faces in the magical faery river at Sligachan (where legend has it, the secret to eternal youth lies), visit Armadale Castle and Eilean Donan Castle and travel through the captivating valley of Glencoe.

OTHER EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Come explore its complex personality. Very modern yet quite ancient. A cosmopolis full of people from all over the world, yet with village neighborhoods. Mountain, valley, sea, city. Catalan, Spanish, Mediterranean, European, Latino, and so much more, truly an exciting mix of identities! Barcelona is an ideal place to combine study abroad with an internship. Our city is home to countless international businesses, nonprofit organizations, tech start-ups, government offices, media outlets, political groups and more. All of these offer tremendous opportunities for you to put your academic learning to real-life use during the semester. Students choose Engage Barcelona for many reasons, yet their profile is similar. They are looking for a blend of academics, practical work experience and life-changing personal experiences. They are adventurous, looking for a challenging and stimulating experience, and do not want their hands held. But they do want support when they need it, which is why your Barcelona team opens their arms to you with an enormous Bienvenidos!! When you’re not taking classes, studying or working at your internship, be assured that our office is open daily and also available for 24/7 emergency assistance. We’re here to help with medical issues, personal emergencies, academic questions or just to chat! You will also see us on cultural activities and excursions, perfect opportunities for us to know each other personally. Our goal is to support you throughout your time in Barcelona. It will be an unforgettable experience. Sincerely, Ryan Lorenz, Resident Director and all the IFSA-Butler staff in Barcelona

CARDIFF Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, is commonly described as the perfect student city. It is easy to walk around, friendly, inexpensive and has a very low crime rate. Cardiff also has all the facilities you would expect of a modern and cosmopolitan metropolis within a unique Welsh cultural tradition. If you like to get out of the city, the South Wales area offers some of the most spectacular natural scenery in the world and is a great base for visiting continental Europe.
