Our exclusive Exploring Community & Culture (C&C) course offers you the opportunity to experience your host city in a way most visitors never can. This 3-credit option fosters intercultural dialogue and a greater understanding of global society. Some programs offer an on-site class, while students in other locations can join a global cohort of other IFSA-Butler students worldwide by taking the class online. Using your host city as your laboratory, C&C will help you experience and examine cultural as well as personal identity.

AFFORD YOUR JOURNEY FINANCIAL AID

Many students don’t realize that financial aid can help pay for study abroad. Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and PLUS loans can apply to your IFSA-Butler program. College grants and scholarships, Perkins Loans, state grants and loans, and 529 plans may also be used for study abroad, but you’ll need to ask your home campus financial aid office about their policies for transferring these types of aid.

We believe that study abroad is within reach for every student, so we’re committed to helping you identify funding sources. We can assist you with your financial aid transfer, and we offer a wide range of scholarships and grants to help defray the cost of studying abroad.

VETERANS BENEFITS

If you are a recipient of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, you may use your tuition benefits for study abroad. This process can differ among U.S. colleges and universities, so you will want to start the conversation early with your home campus study abroad office to determine the best billing procedure for your institution.

WORK-TO-STUDY GRANT PROGRAM

Gain some work experience and earn spending money while you are abroad! With the Work-to-Study grant, students complete projects for IFSA-Butler in exchange for a stipend between $300 and $1,000, depending on the scope and involvement of the projects completed. These grant opportunities are available to all students, with special consideration to those already on federal work study at their home campus. Work-to-Study positions are determined by current and frequently changing project needs at IFSA-Butler, but could include: • Marketing and communications • Graphic design • Photography and videography • Peer advising • Research • Creative writing

EXCURSIONS, ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS EXCURSIONS • Northern Ireland Weekend for Republic of Ireland students: Includes a day tour of the Antrim Coastline, including the world famous Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle and Carrick-ARede Rope Bridge. Also includes an insightful black taxi tour of Belfast to learn about “The Troubles,” followed by a debrief discussion with a local expert to really get an understanding of Belfast’s past and present. • Dublin weekend for Northern Ireland students: Includes cultural event such as an opportunity to learn a traditional Irish musical instrument, a historic walking tour, delicious brunch and city center accommodation. • Kilkenny Weekend for all students: Includes two nights in Ireland’s medieval capital. PROFILE My time abroad influenced my academics and personal relationships greatly. Due to the different educational system in the UK and the high level of expectations, my work back at my home university has been more independently driven and I have become more focused on research in the areas that I am passionate about. • Three-day Highland weekend: Students take guided tours throughout the stunning Highlands, visit a historic whiskey distillery, see a display at one of Scotland’s last working sheep dog farms, and tour the magical Loch Ness and Culloden, the site of the last ever battle to be fought on British soil

• Three-day visit to the Argyll Forest on the West coast of Scotland, one of Scotland’s most beautiful national parks. Program Curriculum Government and Politics in the U.K. Scotland: Society and Culture Scottish Politics Parliamentary Internship

INTERNSHIP Following the program’s first five weeks of courses, students intern for an MSP (Member of the Scottish Parliament) for 10 weeks. Under the guidance of the MSP, interns pursue an independent research project and participate actively in the political life of the Parliament. The independent research project will be assessed upon completion of the internship program. Members of the department will be available to assist and guide each student with the research project.

CULTURAL AND SPORTING EVENTS

The following list of excursions, events and activities may be offered during your semester abroad in Barcelona. Please note that not all activities or these exact excursions are offered every semester. • Visit to Girona with guided tour of medieval center and famous Jewish Quarter • Visit to Dali’s house in Portlligat • Experience Volcanic National Park • Tour of Dali Museum • Trip to Collserola and La Fageda Forests • Tarragona and Poblet Weekend: Spend a weekend in the Tarragona Province, a sun-filled port along the east coast of Spain that’s famous for its gorgeous beaches, Roman ruins and Mediterranean atmosphere. IFSA-Butler’s resident team will accompany students on the weekend excursion and introduce them to some of the sites that make Tarragona a favorite vacation destination for Spaniards and visitors from throughout Europe. Part of the weekend will also include a visit to Poblet Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site founded in 1151, and most likely the chance to navigate an underground cave network that’s hidden to most.

PROFILE One of the major holidays in Wales is St. David’s Day, in honor of their patron saint (in fact as I write this I am realizing St. David’s Day is actually tomorrow!). In order to learn about what this day means to Wales and get involved with the festivities in Cardiff my fellow IFSA friends and I went to the parade that made its way through the city. –Lauren Sundby, Drake University Cardiff University, 2015

• Walking tour of Cardiff Bay

EXCURSIONS • Lake District Cultural Weekend for all program students. Activities include mountain biking, gorge scrambling, canoeing, hill walking, Viking boat sailing and visits to William Wordsworth’s home and Beatrix Potter’s farm. Local speakers also discuss the history of the area and give a tour of the only surviving slate mine in Great Britain. • Two or three single-day trips per semester for students who make their way to London (transportation is reimbursed). Past trips have included Brighton, Oxford, Salisbury, Canterbury, Cambridge and Windsor. • Day trips to Caerphilly Castle and the National Mining Museum in Blaenavon.
