Editor’s comment I know I say it every year, but this year has gone by in the blink of an eye. Hope it’s been a good one for you? It’s been the year of many product launches and start-ups. Particularly by black entrepreneurs, who have seen a gap in the market and done their own thing, whether it be skincare or haircare, beauty boxes or make-up. We talk to one such person Carron WainwrightRichardson from Carron Cosmetics, a brand new line of cosmetics for women of darker skin tones. See the interview on Behind the scenes with Carron Cosmetics (page 118). Despite the trend for natural hair, wigs and weaves haven’t gone away, in fact they’ve become even more popular as many women use them as a method of protective styling. What is different is that kinkier textures are now available (Remember that scene in Chris Rock’s Film Good Hair when the Korean sales assistant said with derision that nobody wanted afro textured hair extensions)? Well, all sorts of hair textures are available now. See our Wig & Weave supplement from page 60. How often do you see a black Muslim woman on TV, in a magazine or as a positive topic for conversation? The founders of Culturing Success hope to change people’s perceptions that women who wear the hijab are not invisible with their #AfroHijabi campaign. See The Black Muslim Woman (page 102). The final judging of the Black Beauty/Sensationnel Hair Awards 2017 has just taken place. The winners will be announced at the end of this month. Check out the website to see if your favourite stylist is amongst the finalists/winners. Have a good one!

AUTHOR PRACTISES FASHION NATIONALISM
In a show of solidarity, writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is practising ‘fashion nationalism’, where she will only be wearing Nigerian designers to public events. ‘I would be supporting the different layers of the industry, from the button-sewer to the delivery person, and I hoped to bring other buyers to Nigerian brands,’ she says. Dr Ali N. Syed, founder and master chemist of KeraCare Sum up KeraCare in three words
World class, innovative haircare How has haircare changed in the last 25 years?
Hairstyles are like the fashion industry – things constantly keep changing. The industry is cyclical and things are always moving, so you have to keep up with whatever the new style is or new needs are. But the basic mantra of KeraCare remains the same – innovation and advancement of technology that helps towards achieving healthy hair and scalp. What KeraCare product should every relaxed sister have on her dresser?
The following regimen is a must for relaxed hair; KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo, (£5.40), KeraCare Humecto Cream Conditioner (£7.40) and KeraCare Silken Seal (£9.05). In the case of dry and itchy scalps use KeraCare Dry & Itchy maintenance system.
KeraCare Natural Textures is the brand for naturalistas. Use Natural Textures Honey Shea Co-Wash (£8.80) followed by Natural Textures Leave-in Conditioner (£5.75) and then twist the hair with Natural Textures Twist & Define Cream (£8.70). For wash and gos, use Natural Textures Defining Custard (£8.55) and for air-drying the Natural Textures Butter Cream (£10.70). What is your vision for the next 25 years?
To continue researching new ingredients from the African continent and the Indian subcontinent. Wherever we find the best possible new natural ingredients, we analyse and test them extensively before including them in our products. We are also addressing issues of hair growth itself, we want to find out how we can maximise hair growth while keeping the hair and scalp healthy.

WATCH OUT FOR YOUR WINTER COAT
Once your hair reaches your neckline it becomes extra vulnerable to breakage. Why? At this length, the tips are just starting to touch your shoulders – already a friction hazard for delicate ends. Winter makes things even worse since you’re constantly putting on and taking off your coat, which drags against your ends and breaks them off. It’s a pattern you may have observed in winters gone by: the ends at the back start feeling inexplicably rough, then you begin to notice tiny hairs on your shirt when you’re styling. Next thing you know, your hair at the nape’s crept back to its pre-summer length. Scarves also pose a similar strand-scraping risk so watch them, too. Luckily, the solution is simple: if your hair is anyw ywhere w between nape to shoulder length, keep it up for winter, in a cute bun or pinned-up style.
WRAP UP AGAINST THE WIND
#2
While temperatures that average around 5°C for most of the UK may not be the stuff of hair nightmares, the chilly breeze is another story. Wintry winds can rip moisture from your strands in seconds, as well as causing tangles and strand-on-strand friction, inflicting instant breakage. Check the weather before you step out. If the winds are strong, ensure your hair is cosily covered up.

Hair Care
BEWARE OF THE HOT AIR
MIIND THE HAT
You might fear that the icy chills outside will ravage your hair in the worst way, but let’s face it; British winters tend to be pretty mild. In a temperate climate, the most strand-damaging factor is not usually the cold; it’s more likely to be the heat. The same central heating that wraps you in warmth also wicks moisture from the air, leaving both your hair and skin dehydrated. Keep this from happening by not just moisturising your hair, but insulating it – protecting your strands from moisture loss with multiple layers of conditioning. Use a deep conditioner over your regular conditioner, or double up on deep treatments if your hair tends to be dry. atrActiva Multivitamin Treatment works great under the Silicon Mix Treatment. Then slather on a high-moisture leave-in like Capilo La Aplanadora and seal it all in with a thick cream like BPT Brillantina. Insulating each strand locks in both the moisture and lubrication your hair needs to protect it from breakage.
#6
Warm win nter hats may keep us nice and snug, but their texture is far from the most hair-friendly. The wool’s wispy fibres rub against strands, scratch hing and causing minute, cumulative damage. Over the winter monthss, this adds up to severe breakage, especially at the hairline. What’s morre, the spongy woollen texture soaks up muchneeded oils and moistu ure from your strands, leaving them even more susceptible to breakage. Does all this mean you u should go hat-free for winter? Not at all. You can sew a satin liningg into your favourite hat in minutes – use fabric glue if you’re not so handy with a needle and thread. Alternatively, wrap your hair in your favourite satin scarf (not too tightly; be kind to th hose edges) and slide your woolly hat on top. Problem solved!

BACK AWAY Y FRO OM THE BLOWDR RYER
Fear of catching a colld from goingg out with wet hair has many of us who airdry all summer long reaching for ou ur blowdryers. But when you’re trying to grow yourr haair long or maintain a healthyy length, direct heat can be the mosst dam maging facto or. Try to airdry as much as possible – even in winter – if you want to hold d on to the inches. You can help your haiir dryy faster by sepaaraating it into sections and securing it with a clip or baand. Gently squ ueeze each section with a microfibre towel or cotto on T-shirt to get mo ost of the water out, then wrap your hair in a fresh to owel or tee to soak up even more water as it airdries. Once it’s 80 perr ceent th here, remove thee towel. You can apply your leave-in at this poin nt or waait and let the aiir absorb more of the moisture first before stepp ping outside.
PROTECT, DON’T NEGLECT
Struggling through your mane is probably not the most appealing prospect on a dark winter morning. If you’re contemplating letting your hair hibernate under a wig, weave or braids instead, just make sure you don’t forget it’s under there. Neglect for hair that is weaved up for winter is a top cause of breakage, especially when extensions are left in too long. It’s easy to forget that these low-maintenance styles are not totally maintenance-free. Hair in protective styles still needs nurturing, so keep it cleansed, conditioned and moisturised; just as you would if you were wearing your tresses loose and free. If you’re not confident with washing and treating extensions at home, this might be just the time to set up some winter pampering sessions with a stylist. The bonus: you might even yield some extra length when you take them down. To top off all your good work, care for your tresses from the inside out, too. Good hydration plus healthy, hair-friendly foods make the best possible start for super-strong strands that are well-equipped for winter.

HAIR EXTENSIONS Fed up of receiving bundles that vary in texture and quality? Or finding out the expensive human hair you bought is mixed with synthetic and animal hair? Fair Hair Care sets its sights on improving the quality control in the hair industry – once and for all! air Hair Care has launched a campaign with the aim towards fairer hair extensions. The company is dedicated to putting transparency and quality at the heart of hair consumerism and is campaigning for over 500,000 signatures from consumers globally to challenge manufacturers and stockists who sell low-quality extensions at high prices. Fair Hair Care will start by setting industry standards for manufacturers and hair companies who sell extensions globally. The organisations’ methodology and verification process have gone through consultation with scientists and specialists within the hair extension industry. The company intends to use the Fair Hair Care mark on products to reassure consumers that the product has been assessed and has met the criteria mark. Consumers can also go onto the Fair Hair Care website to find out how these brands have met the criteria. Christina Adesina, co-founder of Fair Hair Care comments, ‘A growing band of consumers want good quality hair extensions, but prefer to buy from brands that are striving to have a positive impact on people and the planet. Transparency at the point of sale promotes informed choices. Each brand

The stamp of approval will tell the brand's sustainability story by revealing its ethical, and transparent efforts to consumers. Adesina continues, ‘People are often blind when purchasing hair extensions and usually choose a brand based on false marketing messages or social influencers suggestions only to find the that the quality is not to be trusted. This is why Fair Hair Care not only grades hair extensions based on quality and longevity but also shows the ethical journey that the product has been through. Fair Hair Care hopes its community of brands will become industry leaders, showing other companies how to offer hair extensions in a transparent way. To learn more visit: www.fhairc.com

WEAVES THAT HELP HAIR LOSS
We talk to Desired Extensions, a weave company that focuses on preventing and reversing the effect of hair loss
hy are Desired Extensions desirable? We have the highest quality Indian hair extensions and a natural ethnic texture to our hair bundles, that give a natural look and blend in your hair. We carry six different hair patterns from straight to afro kinky Tell us about your service to chemo patients? Our services are not only to chemo patients but also to alopecia sufferers, or someone just wanting a new look without altering their own natural tresses. Our staff go out to
a variety of hospitals and do consultations for our Diverse Collection or Tailored Collection of wigs. We also offer faceto-face interaction over the internet for consultations worldwide. It gives you the experience as if you’re in a store but a very private setting in your own home. Hair extensions receive a bad rep for damaging your hair. What are your thoughts on this? It’s not the hair extensions damaging your hair; it’s the maintenance and many other factors. The braiding technique can cause damage to the follicle and create permanent
hair loss. Purchasing low-end hair that has synthetic fibers added in with human hair can cause inflammation on your scalp and causes damage. We recommend not to leave extensions in longer than six to eight weeks, as maintenance needs to be done on your own natural tresses to keep it healthy. How can weave wearers improve hair growth? Hair growth can be improved by drinking water, which in turn gives moisture to the natural hair. Before installing your hair extensions, be sure to moisturise your hair with proper hair products to prevent breakage from dry and brittle hair. Once you have worn your install (sew-in) for six to eight weeks, shampoo and deep condition your hair with a trim to your hair ends. What steps can be taken to avoid traction alopecia? First step is to avoid doing your hair parting in the same area. Move from center to left or right, to prevent traction alopecia. In your braiding techniques, be sure to tell your hair stylist to switch up his/her braiding pattern. One of the number one causes of traction alopecia is braiding too tight. A lot of people forget to treat their scalps too. Your scalp needs to be exfoliated at least once every two months to increase healthy follicles. Interview with the founder of Desired Extensions, Gina Conwell. For more information and to buy Desired Extensions hair, visit www.desiredextensions.com

U P G R A D E YO U R N AT U R A L H A I R R O U T I N E T O D AY Six ways to make a difference to your curls, kinks and coils by Root2tip
1
Invest in a steamer to use with your deep conditioner treatment As the air gets colder, you may find your hair becomes more dry and brittle! Prevent winter breakage by deep conditioning at least once a fortnight with a steamer! The steam treatment allows your conditioner to sink deeper into your hair to nourish strands and revitalise dry hair textures. Even after the first steam, you will notice a dramatic difference in the way your hair feels, looks and behaves!
2
Pre-poo with a natural oil before your regular shampoo
IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK. FOR STOCKISTS SEE PAGE 130
Use a scalp oil like our Grow-it-long Serum which can be applied to your strands and massaged into your scalp overnight. Adding a natural oil to your hair before your shampoo, will add extra moisture, taking away the dryness and stripping effective a shampoo can have on your hair.
3
Butter Up!
If you are used to applying a cream moisturiser, leave-in conditioner or just an oil, try something different this winter. Natural butters crafted specifically for hair will deliver intense moisture. Often made with shea butter, and with no added water, they offer undiluted hydration that can increase elasticity, and protect your natural hair from the harsh winter elements. Check-out our 100% Natural Hair Butter, all-natural and delicious for all textures.
4
Heat-free holiday
Ditch the blow-dryer and straighteners this winter and give your hair a break from heat. Any break from heat will strengthen your hair and allow the protein within the hair shaft to remain intact. Healthy hair looks and feels alive, although our hair is officially dead, we can keep it vibrant when treated with TLC.
5
Preserve your FRO!
A safe protective style will allow your hair to grow and be preserved throughout the winter months. Constant manipulation over time stresses our strands, leading to breakage and damage! A safe protective style, freezes the current condition of your hair in time. Your protective style can however damage your hair, if not installed in a healthy way. If, for example, you are considering braids, ensure they are not tight! The same for the installation of a weave, or even if you are having locs styled. If your hair feels tight, it is not right.
6
Keep your scalp clean!
If you have been co-washing and forgoing a shampoo for the summer, then this needs to change. A shampoo should be used primarily on your scalp, it will keep the follicles clean and clear allowing for healthy hair growth. Use a formula that is mild, natural and sulphate-free. Our Stimulate & Cleanse Shampoo is enriched with ginger, and plant proteins.

DETANGLING & BLOWDRYING
Three drops of Charlotte Mensah Manketti Hair Oil was applied to damp hair mid-length and ends. Manketti Oil forms as an effective heat protector and also seals in moisture. Hair was detangled using a paddle brush and divided into six twist sections. Charlotte released each section and gently blowdried using a comb attachment that released Patricia’s curl pattern.

CUTTING & STYLING
Taking a vertical section and with minimum tension, Charlotte cut lengths from short to long. She masterfully refined the layering through the front and added a heavy fringe to personalise the haircut. A medium sized round brush was used to go over the blow-dry for a smoother finish.

Anastasia Chikezie
Anastasia Chikezie, multi award-winning natural hairstylist and owner of Purely Natural Salon in London, answers your natural hair questions
DAMAGED HAIR FROM PROTECTIVE STYLING For protective styling I’ve being wearing a high bun, but recently I noticed the hair in the middle has broken considerably. Why is that and what can I do to reverse the affect?
Oh dear – this sounds like you have traction alopicia which is hair loss caused by pulling or tension applied to the hair. The only way to treat this is by changing your hairstyle. Try to include regular protein treatments into your regime as this this will help to strengthen your hair.

BLOW-DRY LESSON What tips do you have for a healthy blow-dry?
For a healthy blow-dry, section the hair - the thicker the hair the more sections are needed. Apply Cantu Thermal Shield Heat Protectant throughout, but pay attention to the ends as this is the oldest and weakest part of your hair, and therefore prone to breakage. Keep the temperature low to moderate and work the blow-dryer ends to roots, section-by-section!

GET THE SALON TREATMENT AT HOME
STAR LETTER
I love the idea of going to the salon for a steam and treatment but I simply can’t afford it every fortnight. Are there home-friendly deep conditioning methods you can recommend?
Yes of course. You can use a combination of oils like almond, olive, jojoba, castor oil to make your own oil treatment. The rich vitamins and antioxidant content present in oils help to heal damaged hair by sealing the cuticle, or outer layer, with moisture. Theses oils can be used as a hot oil hair treatment to strengthen, add shine and restore moisture to very dry hair.

Put the oil of your choice into a bowl and slightly warm it up in a microwave. Apply the warm oil thoroughly over and hair and massage into your scalp with the pads of your fingers for up to 10 minutes. TEXTURISER & HAIR GOALS Will texturising make my hair longer and my curls more defined?
Texturisers are a mild version of a chemical hair relaxer. The texturiser can loosen and enhance your natural curl pattern without completely straightening it and does give the appearance that your hair is longer. Texturisers work better and produce more even results on short hair, so if you plan to rock a short style and you feel the need for more of a wave pattern versus an afro, then a texturiser may be a good option. Remember to get your hair trimmed often as this will allow you to get rid of any damage and breakage.

Clare Ward, spokesperson, at Methven UK, said: ‘While the average spend on haircare products is high – between £50 and £100 every month – not one participant had previously considered making a small investment in a new shower head to enhance their haircare results.’ We’ll be ordering ours today!

THE BL ACK MUSLIM WOMAN
Culturing Success’ #AfroHijabi campaign takes definitive steps to show black Muslim women in a whole new light
102 BB&H DECEMBER 2017/JANUARY 2018 | WWW.BLACKBEAUTYANDHAIR.COM
Culturing Success
ow often do you see a black Muslim woman on TV, in a magazine or as a positive topic for conversation? Constantly underrepresented and a victim of neglect from both communities, this is the existence for many black Muslim women, not only in the UK but across the globe. Founders of Culturing Success, Rikki Knight and Rhianna Beaumont, noticed a separation between the black woman who wears a hijab and the one that does not, ‘as if the hijab, a piece of material makes us somehow - different. And the lack of representation of Black Muslim women within the media perpetuates this narrative,’ says Rhianna. The birth of Culturing Success came out of frustration; the frustration of being invisible, and along with this came their first campaign, #AFROHIJABI, the showcasing of amazing black Muslim women. ‘A lot of the time our work goes unnoticed, but with the growth of social media we have the opportunity to showcase our many talents,’ says Rikki. ‘To our delight this shoot went viral, the response was amazing and we were left feeling overwhelmed with the flood of messages we received.’
Afrohijabi has only just begun, check out @culturingsuccess on Instagram for updates The campaign features writer and model Aishah Morgan, personal trainer Shazia Hossen, poets Yasmin, Sariya and Asma El-Badawi, who’s also a basketball player. The shoot also includes Rikki Knight and Rhianna Beaumont founders of Culturing Success. ‘All of us understood the obstacles we face due to our ethnicities and religious beliefs and how we refuse to view them as a barrier,’ says Rikki. ‘We are poets, we are doctors and we are mechanics. We are here, we exist and our voices are about to be heard! Each one of us paving the way for a better narrative.’

SKIN EXPERT BIANCA ESTELLE
are five tim mes more likkely than men to be affected by late-life acn ne, with a quarter citing they’re still prone to breakouts. Accorrding to research company Mintel, 17 per cent of women n indicate that they are suffering with h adult acne. Most women will find ffllluctuating hormon nes, pregnaancy, perriods and stress will contribute to breaak-outs. Bian nca Estellee founder of cosmeceutical range bea Skin Care thinkss the predicament can also be attributed to th he unctuous creams used to wage the war againsst wriinkles. ‘A major cause of the rise in adult acne is due to the thick anti-w wrin nkle creams that women in their 30’s and 40’s start applying as a deterrent to ward off signs of ageiing’, says Bianca. ‘Time poor females look for one-approach fixes-all routines to cure their skin, which ends up being detrimental in the long run. By doing this they don’t take into account their skin’s heterogeneity. In the same way we are all diverse in character, shape and race, we are also diverse in our skin’s reacttio on to products,’ explains Bianca. Solvin ng th he morse code complexities of skin care in your 30’s and 40’s (like acne and wrinkles) your treatment neeeds to go hand in hand. With h acne more than often marketed as a teenage issue, it is littlle surprise that the struggle to treat the ever riisingg ap ppearrance of adult acne is evident. The conditio on affects predomin nantly women ( 80% of adult casees are femalee according to acne.org) and depending on skin typ ype, p pressen nts additional complications such as hyperp p piggmentatio on and keloid scarring as well as the origgin nal angst ind ducing pustules.
bea Skin Care’s 5 Step Daily Regime allows individuals to customise their skin care according to their own particular needs. The products contain medical grade ingredients carefully formulated alongside complementary additives such as apple stem cells and green tea to minimize irritation and overdrying, creating silky serums and gentle cleansers that neutralise subdermal infl fllammation. Waving a magic wand isn’t normally the answer to such skin care complexities. Bianca agrees that: ‘Spots and lines being treated together can seem a daunting if nigh on impossible combination to treat’. However, with the magic of the AHA rejuvenating wand, a mini skin peel applicator designed to be used twice week a to increase the skins absorption in treating acne and enlarged pores, problematic skin conditions can be reversed. Use in combination with the Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser in the mornings and Acne Treatment Gel in the evenings, and finish the routine with the firming serum to prevent skin dryness, this will have noticeable effects within four weeks. ‘It is about complementing treatments,’ Bianca explains, ‘Acne has become a serious and in some cases confidence debilitating condition. Cleansing your face and ridding the pollutants of the day is just as important as targeted acne skin care; phones, dirty brushes can all carry bacteria and make skin susceptible to a breakout.’ Bianca’s anti-bacterial and moisture binding Konjac Sponges are soaked in healing zinc, copper and folic acid along with anti-ageing hero vitamin A and a winning combination of C, D, B1, B2 and B12. With regular use the sponge, rich in polysaccharides (which form part of the skins moisture containing building blocks) will help to balance the PH level while natural bamboo charcoal possesses anti-infl fllammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Sensitive skins with rosacea, hyperpigmentation and acne will love the aforementioned acne treatment gel, which tackles a multitude of skin concerns without clogging pores. The gentle silky serum with mandelic and salicylic acid gel – an alpha hydroxy acid and beta hydroxy acid – is ideal for those who are intolerant to glycolic acid. These powerful ingredients exfoliate accumulated dead skin cells while mandelic acid’s lightening effects are beneficial for those with active hyperpigmentation, as well as, postinfl fllammatory hyperpigmentation.
Acne Care starts from as little as £39 (Glyco Serum 15%), to £245 for the complete Acne Care Plus Kit (Master Antioxidant, Advanced System, 5 Step Daily Regime, Luminescence Range, Essential Range).
Skin Care BIANCA’S TOP TIPS FOR COMBAT TING AND DE ALING WITH ACNE: S top touc hing y our f ac e!
People touch their faces all the time and are not aware that they are doing it, so avoiding this is key. Also, anywhere that bacteria can breed which comes into contact with the face should be avoided and regularly cleaned – mobile phones are a culprit but one of the worst causes are dirty make up and make up brushes. Ensure that make up brushes are cleaned and dried once a week and always check use by dates on products like foundation.
Stop squeezing
Personally, I’m anti-popping spots. It tends to leave scars and isn’t a great habit. But if you do want to take this route, I’d advise the help of a skin specialist like myself who’ll either use a medical extractor or a microlance needle.
Products that encourage exfoliation and cell turnover as well as having a slightly drying (but not over drying) effect on spots are ideal. My Acne Care Kit (£195) contains a selection of products which act as a support and preventative measure to ward off acne and minimise spots. Ingredients across the range include glycolic, salicylic and mandelic acid which have skin resurfacing and anti-inflammatory properties. Ideally, I recommend a protocol that helps to keep skin exfoliated all the time rather than having to tackle acne when it occurs as it is often hard to treat the skin when it is inflamed.
U s e oi l -fre e produ cts
For a lot of people, oils definitely cause spots and can make acne worse, so if you know this is a problem then always look for oil-free products. Other people are sensitive to ingredients like silicone which can cause them to break out, so the key is to know your skin. If you suspect that a product is giving you spots, then trust your instinct and read the label and learn what ingredients to avoid. I’d recommend my Acne Care Plus Kit (£245) to really tackle acne concerns head on. It contains a selection of products including a glycolic cleanser, our salicylic treatment gel and alpha hydroxy acid skin peel wands which when used as a complete set can have a positive impact on skin and the effects of acne, which is visible within a matter of weeks.
G et a p eel
I’m a massive advocate for at home peels, they can really improve skin condition and are ideal for those with oily skin. Again, using multiple products when you are going through a bad breakout is not the answer and can irritate the skin so the key is to devise your own skin care routine with regular treatments in order to minimise breakouts. Of course the percentage of active ingredients in a skin peel will factor into how often it can be used. I recommend my clients use their AHA Rejuvenating Wands (£60/pack of 10) twice a week to see an improvement and these contain 7% glycolic acid, a natural skin resurfacer perfectly fine to be administered at home while complementing any treatments they are having with me (Bianca).

BEHIND THE SCENES WITH CARRON COSMETICS Finding make-up just right for you is every woman’s dream, so that’s what MUA Carron Enwright-Richardson did by creating her own cruelty-free colour cosmetics range
What is the brand’s USP? As a cruelty-free natural make-up brand, Carron Cosmetics’ unique selling points are our natural ingredients – jojoba butter/ oil, shea butter, castor oil, corn starch etc. As more and more people are switching to cruelty-free make-up, and becoming more conscious of brands that use natural ingredients, we are pleased to have created a complete range of make-up that everyone will be happy to support by wearing and spreading the word. How did you get into make-up? I was self-taught. I started with my dolls, then my sisters and friends. Through years of doing small make-up jobs, working for various make-up brands and doing freelance work for TV, magazines, photoshoots, music
shows, weddings etc. I strengthened my make-up skills, extended my client base and familiarised myself with numerous make-up products/brands. The highlight of my career? I have had a few highlights, the first time I worked on the MTV Europe Music Awards, I think of it and I still smile. I worked on that show over 10 years. Also meeting Iyanla Vanzant and working with her for two days using Carron Cosmetics. What do you love most about make-up? I love the creative aspect – I enjoy working on a wide range of people, always achieving amazing results. The way make-up helps to enhance beauty, whether it’s worn naturally or full glam. Sometimes make-up helps to give people confidence for several reasons. Has the beauty industry come far in diversity, representation and inclusiveness? The make-up/beauty industry has come a long way and still has room for growth. Being in the make-up industry for many years, I have bore witness to a lot of changes. Big make-up/beauty brands have and still are extending their colour range to include more skin colour and skin tones, because of this more people from around the world are represented by way of inclusiveness of diverse models for beauty campaigns, magazine covers and TV ads. People of all races and ethnic backgrounds are now in prime positions in the beauty
industry, which makes a change to years gone by. As a black owned makeup brand, Carron Cosmetics caters to all. Who inspired your career? I can clearly remember the first time I picked up the Essence magazine at the news stand in New York early 90’s, I became aware of Sam Fine. He was cute, black and a make-up artist. He was my sign, yes girl! you are on the right track. Following Sam’s career, seeing his beautiful work in magazines, TV etc. I can honestly say to this day he is by far the most amazing make-up artist in the world. His dedication and talent, has helped me grow as a MUA– always paying close attention to detail, which helps in achieving a beautiful polished look each time. I had the pleasure of attending a Masterclass with Sam in London. Meeting him and watching the master at work was truly a blessing. What are your go-to products from your make-up collection? My foundation M4 Cream Foundation, Cream Black Eyeliner and Deep Beige Nude Matte Lipstick. What’s an important piece of beauty advice that you’d give to all women? A consistent skin and body care routine is key, for beautiful skin. No. 1 tip for someone who wants to start their own make-up brand would be… Be prepared to work incredibly hard. hat was the driving force to starting Carron Cosmetics…Professionally, working with women with a warm undertone, I would find the yellow, too yellow, the red too red and the orange too orange. The balance was never right for me. I would have to make an adjustment by mixing a few foundations together to create something natural looking on the skin. This was also the same with lipsticks for women with darker lips, lipsticks will always end up an unusual colour once applied. The solution to this was applying foundation to the lips before applying the lipstick, sometimes leaving my clients lips very dry. These factors are still apparent to this day with many make-up brands that cater to women of warm undertones.

It is quite customary for hair to grow faster in different areas of the head. We always tend to brush and touch the front of our hair the most which will make it weaker. If you tend to tie your hair back that is also adding tension and can weaken it. Be careful with hair bands and combs you are using. Reframe from anything that will pull or snag the hair like an elastic band or plastic brushes. I would suggest using a good hair supplement. We have two brands within the salon - Viviscal and Lumity. These are hair supplements that you take internally and both promote hair growth and strength. If you are allergic to shell fish you are unable to take Viviscal, but Lumity is free from artificial colours, flavours, dyes, caffeine, dairy, eggs, gluten and lots more! Errol Douglas MBE

HAIRLINE AND CONFIDENCE GONE
My partner’s hairline is starting to recede which has knocked his confidence. I’ve seen the man weave online, what are your thoughts about this – should he give it a go? To boost his confidence l would highly recommend the Man unit. If done properly it should look natural and undetectable. I would only recommend him having this unit fitted by a reputable salon. It will be a major transformation and he will need to feel confident in the person carrying out the treatment who will also advise him in all aspects of this service. ie, maintainance, removal and replacing. Junior Green
ROUTINE FOR CURLY HAIR
My curly weave has become my signature look but it keeps tangling then matting and even locsing at the back of my head. How can I stop this from happening? Synthetic curls have a shorter life span to Brazilian human hair curls. The former should not come h into contact with water and cannot handle as much product and heat. If your hair is 100 per cent virgin n hair, then a good rule to follow is to wet it down each morning with water spray bottle. Add a leave-iin conditioner and detangle thoroughly using your fingers. Concentrate of areas that tend to matte like the back or middle. Schola Rose
