mong all the uproar and notoriety associated with the COVID-19 pandemic there has been another, mostly overlooked and closely related pandemic... child abuse. Since the arrival of COVID-19 pandemic, parents’ stressors has reached an unprecedented level not only by the specter of a fatal contagion, but also the corollaries such as: • Lockdowns • Unlockdowns • Food insecurities • Job losses • Job insecurities • Masks • Unmasks • COVID-19 vaccinations.
This uncertain future that has in many cases sequestered innocent children with potential abusers who are themselves under extreme pressure. In addition, school closures meant that teachers, who are the most dependable reporters of child abuse, were no longer in contact with many at-risk children. April is child abuse awareness month. Child abuse/maltreatment is a global malady. Hence, the World Health Organization reports that the COVID-19 pandemic shut down so many schools. As many as 1.5 billion children worldwide could not attend classes. These students were stuck at home with parents and caregivers who were facing skyrocketing stress and pressure from lost income, social isolation, and overcrowded homes. Besides the danger posed by stressed-out adults,
some children with access to internet were spending much more time online, creating the peril of online bullying and/or sexual exploitation. UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore has spelled out this unhealthy situation. "Violence against children has always been pervasive, and now things could be getting much worse," she said. "Lockdowns, school closures and movement restrictions have left far too many children stuck with their abusers, without the safe space that school would normally offer. It is urgent to scale up efforts to protect children during these times and beyond." In Texas, seventyone Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) represent at-risk children in 210 of the Lone Star State's 254 counties. According to CAC statistics, 175 Texas Contd. on Page 8

Before CACs came into operation, abused children were too-often re-victimized by the justice system. Traumatized children were frequently repeatedly interviewed by multiple investigators and bounced around among various agencies during the judicial process. Sadly, some were overlooked or forgotten and fell through the cracks. Currently, children who have been reported as having suffered physical or sexual abuse and/or neglect are sent to just one agency--a Child Advocacy Center. It is here that they dialogue with a meticulously trained forensic interviewer who is careful to allow the child to tell in his own words what happened. Detectives and Child Protective Investigators watch and listen to this interview from a separate room and insure all their questions are answered through the CAC interviewer. This decreases the number of times children have to relive horrific events and reduces the number of persons to whom they must make these painful recounting. In the aftermath of the forensic interview, investigators concentrate on the case while CAC

advocates and therapists focus on the child's and supportive family's immediate needs. The CAC provides subsequent and ongoing advocacy support, counseling, medical examinations, and referrals to other agencies that might assist affected children and adults in the healing process. That is not all. According to Stevenson, Martin House CAC provides community education programs for children and adults to prevent child abuse, improve traumainformed responses, and expedite abuse reporting at no charge. For Stevenson there is no such thing as a typical day. The types of cases her agency handles are many, varied and timeconsuming. She explains: "We may work with an eightyear-old girl who is being sexually abused by an older step-brother, or a teenaged boy who is being physically assaulted regularly by his stepfather, or siblings who witnessed their mother's murder by her former boyfriend who broke into their house in the middle of the night," she said. The Center takes numerous calls from investigators to schedule forensic interviews involving cases when children are abused or have witnessed violent crimes. This can involve single or multiple children from individual families. The forensic interviews with children are the first step in the investigative

Explore the true meaning of Easter

eading Bunnies and baskets, chocolates and candies. It’s that time of year when parents scramble to ensure their children wake up to a trove of treats, and families decide on who is serving the lamb dinner this year. These are some of the familiar Easter traditions, but much more is involved with the holiday than egg hunts and brightly adorned bonnets. For the religious, it can be important to delve into the true meanings behind Easter and let those discoveries help shape celebrations. Easter, above all, is a religious commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the culmination of the holy period known as Lent, and it the most significant date on the Christian liturgical calendar. Jesus Christ was the Son of God, who fulfilled the prophesies that he would give his own life for his people so they could enjoy eternal life after their own mortal bodies perished. Easter, from Jesus’ very own words, marked a new covenant for the faithful. According to scripture, Jesus was enjoying the Passover dinner
12
when he sat down with his disciples. Understanding that this would be his last earthly meal and that someone close to him would betray him, he took bread and gave thanks to God for it. He broke the bread and said it was his body that should be given up so sins would be forgiven. He did a similar gesture with wine, indicating that it was his blood that should be shed as a sacrifice for all. Christ instructed the disciples to do the same ritual in the future in memory of him. Jesus was subsequently betrayed and turned over to the authorities. He was sentenced to crucifixion and perished on the cross. His body was cleansed and placed in a tomb sealed by a stone. His followers were unaware of the miracle that would ensue in the days to come. On Easter Sunday, the tomb was discovered open and empty. Jesus had risen from the dead, providing irrefutable proof that he was the Son of God. In turn, Jesus fulfilled all he was born to do and preached.

Walmart taps Longview, Texas native as creative director to showcase exclusive, prestigious fashion name brands
Easter did not always symbolize Christ’s resurrection when it was first celebrated. It was once a pagan ritual of renewal and birth. However, when early missionaries began spreading Christianity’s message, the holiday falling around the time of Christ’s actual resurrection was adopted to commemorate the religious miracle. Today it stands as a testament to ultimate sacrifice and the promise of eternal life for all who believe in him.

n the latest Consumer Sentinel Network (CSN) report issued by the Federal Trade Commission, Texas ranks No. 12 in the nation for the most reported cases of identity theft per 100,000 residents. Nearly 135,000 Identity theft cases were documented with those aged 30-39 being the most heavily targeted group. More than $203 million in total fraud losses were reported.

The most common type of identity theft reported was Government documents or benefits fraud. This aligns with BBB reports for 2020 where government/benefits fraud reports increased by nearly 3,000% over 2019 numbers. Another fundamental way to avoid falling victim to identity theft is to shred all documents which contain personally identifiable information. BBB invites consumers

Coleman has served in multiple capacities, as an elementary and junior high teacher and worked with special education students in a 2A school prior to coming to the widely acclaimed Longview Independent School District (LISD,) where she currently works as a curriculum specialist. Answering to the 3 topmost qualities of an exceptional leader, she ranked the top three attributes of a successful school leader as follows: 1. Dedication to students, teachers, and families of students because these three groups make up the school family. 2. Looks for the positive in every situation. 3. Willingness to be first to come to work and last to leave. Ms. Wilson concurs. "She works with students to instill positive behavior choices and is a liaison with parents to communicate the expectations for learning and the Hudson PEP program," said Wilson. "Region VII TEPSA and Hudson PEP Elementary congratulate Christi Coleman for her tireless dedication to the campus, staff, parents and students." Coleman's unselfish, giving side shone through as she refused to take personal credit for her recognition. For her, the acclaim was something

"This award is truly a testament to the hard work and dedication of the professionals that surround me, along with the great things that are taking place to help students at Hudson PEP," she said. "I am incredibly grateful to work with students and staff who inspire me. I am proud to be a part of the Hudson PEP family." Coleman will receive additional recognition this summer at an awards dinner in Austin, where she will mingle with earlier-awarded TEPSA assistant principals of the year. One of these honorees will be selected as the 2021 National Assistant Principal of the Year for Texas. This peer-based honor recognizes assistant principals who have demonstrated effective, caring committment to student learning via extraordinary school leadership. LISD Superintendent Dr. James Wilcox made it clear that Coleman's ability and dedication are what made her stand out to her associates. "To be singled out for recognition in your field is always an honor, but the honor is all the greater when it comes from your peers," he said. L
iving a long, healthy life has been made possible thanks in part to modern medicine. But the factor behind longevity is more complex than just access to quality healthcare. Genetics, lifestyle and even where a person lives can all impact the length of a person’s life. Longevity is often studied so scientists can uncover the secrets to those who seem to have unlocked the fountain of youth. Certain areas of the world boast the longest life spans, and scientists study these areas for clues. In 2016, the World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Survey studied the health of populations around the world. In the criteria, WEF ranked countries in terms of the average life expectancy indicating where people live the longest. While developed countries certainly made the list, there was some offset in the numbers based on high rates of mental health issues that may lead to suicide.
Overall, the following countries ranked high in average life expectancy. People interested in living longer may want to adopt some of their citizens lifestyle habits to live long lives. Monaco: The second smallest country in the world boasts quite a high life expectancy, with people living an average of 89.7 years. Nearby France has the lowest obesity rates in the world, possibly helping people to live long, healthy lives. Hong Kong: This country off the coast of China has a high longevity rate with people living an average of 84 years. Steamed food, engaging in Tai Chi and drinking tea may contribute to long life.
Spain: The Spanish dine on the famed Mediterranean Diet, which is rich in fresh vegetables, fish, and healthy fats. Spaniards live on average 83.1 years. Switzerland and Italy: Low poverty levels make a good diet more readily available to much of the Swiss and Italian populations. Diverse
topography that can push physical exertion also may help those in Switzerland and Italy live to 82.8 and 82.7 years, respectively. The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency also tracks life expectancy rates for nations around the world. The United States does not crack the top 20. The CIA puts America at number 50 on its list, with people living an average of 78.4 years 903.291.0020 1408 Lago Trail Longview heartis.com
Assisted Living and Memory Care Community
Japan: In this Asian nation, people live 83.6 years on average. Again, a healthy diet rich in seafood and active lifestyles may be the secret.

This night of fashion and dancing is slated for May 7 from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at LANDMARK SOCIAL, 210 East Methvin Street. Brain Teasers

for Easter Sunday dinner
E
aster Sunday dinners are a tradition in many families. Though the COVID-19 pandemic forced families to alter that tradition in 2020, and could very well do so again in 2021, it is worth noting that Easter takes place in April this year. In many areas, April weather is warm enough to enable al fresco dining, potentially opening the door for families to celebrate together in small groups. Perhaps no food is more closely associated with Easter than lamb.
Slow-roasted Shoulder of Lamb with Cumin Seeds Serves 8-10
• 2 tablespoons cumin seeds • 1 whole shoulder of lamb on the bone (7-8 lbs.) • Salt and freshly ground pepper • Extra virgin olive oil, for drizzling For the cumin gravy: • 1-pint homemade lamb stock • 1to 2 teaspoons cumin seeds, toasted and ground Roux (optional) Warm the cumin seeds lightly in a pan, then crush them using a pestle and mortar. Score the skin of the meat in a diamond pattern with a sharp knife. Transfer to a roasting tin. Sprinkle the meat with salt, pepper and the ground cumin seeds and drizzle with olive oil. Roast for 6-7 hours at 275 F, this gives a delicious, juicy, succulent texture. Transfer to a serving dish and leave in a warm place while you make the gravy. To make the cumin gravy, spoon

the fat off the roasting tin. Add the stock to the remaining cooking juice. Boil for a few minutes on top of the stove, stirring and scraping the tin well to dissolve the caramelized meat juices (a small whisk is typically ideal for this). Add the ground toasted cumin. Thicken with a little roux if you like. Taste and add salt and pepper if needed. Pass through a sieve and transfer to a gravy boat. Carve the meat into thick slices so that everybody gets some crushed cumin seeds. Serve |

with the cumin gravy and crusty roast potatoes. Note: For Lamb Roast with Coriander: Substitute coriander seeds for the cumin seeds, both for roasting the limb and flavoring the gravy. Alternatively, use a mix of cumin and coriander seeds. Note: A shoulder of lamb is much trickier to carve than a leg, but it is so sweet and juicy that is certainly worth the struggle.

Coping with the loss of a loved one while social
distancing
Coping with the loss of a loved one can be challenging in the best of times, but many people have had to confront such challenges at a time that is unlike any other in modern history.
B
y the start of the second full week of May 2020, the World Health Organization reported that roughly 279,000 people across the globe had died from the novel coronavirus COVID-19. Many of the 215 countries, areas or territories that reported cases of COVID-19 implemented social distancing measures in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus. While
24
such efforts no doubt saved lives, they also left many people without traditional means of grieving their deceased loved ones. For example, in March the Church of England limited the number of people who could attend funerals to immediate family members only, while restrictions on gatherings in the United States made it difficult if not impossible for more than 10 people to grieve together in person. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes

that grief is a normal response to losing a loved one. In addition, the American Psychological Association says that research has shown that social support can help people recover from such losses Though traditional funerals and family gatherings may not be possible as the world responds to the COVID-19 outbreak, those who have lost loved ones can embrace various strategies to cope with their loss even while stay-athome orders remain in place.

• Host calls with family members and friends. The videotelephone and chat service Zoom has helped millions of people stay connected with loved ones while social distancing. Schools and universities even employed the service when in-person classroom sessions were canceled to stop the spread of the virus. The CDC recommends grieving families employ such technology to connect with each other in the wake of a loved one’s death. • Share stories. Grieving family members are urged to share stories and pictures much like they would during wakes and funerals.
Share them during group conference calls and/or via social media, emails or other modern modes of communications. Connecting in such ways can ensure no one is forced to grieve alone. • Seek support from your community. The CDC recommends seeking support from faith-based organizations or other trusted community leaders and friends. While inperson church services may not be available, many local religious leaders have made themselves available to congregants and even non-congregants who may need help grieving. Local

community organizations may have grief counselors available to help people cope with loss. • Take part in an activity that meant something to you and your deceased loved one. The CDC notes that doing something in memory of a loved one can help people cope. For example, plant flowers in honor of a deceased parent with whom you shared a love of gardening. Confronting the loss of a loved one during the COVID-19 outbreak can be challenging. But families can still overcome this challenge even if they cannot gather together in person.

COVID-19 PANDEMIC: How to throw a safe bachelor or bachelorette party
T
he consensus from public health professionals around the world is to maintain continued social distancing to help prevent further spread of the COVID-19 virus. Various events have been modified due to the pandemic, and weddings and bachelor/ bachelorette parties have proven no exception. Couples may need to make certain changes to traditional gatherings like bachelor and bachelorette parties to stay safe. Wedding parties average four to five close friends or family members on each side, according to Martha Stewart weddings. Gatherings of five will likely
6
comply with the limitations set for gatherings for indoor and outdoor venues. However, it is essential to check local regulations before planning festivities. Even if gathering with your wedding party is doable, you may have to think outside the box when it comes to how to enjoy these last hoorahs before the wedding.
Host it Outdoors
The likelihood of spreading respiratory viruses like COVID-19 is greatly reduced in outdoor settings where respiratory droplets are more likely to be dispersed rather than concentrated. Restaurants and bars still offer outdoor seating options in many areas, and an
intimate gathering for food and drinks outside can be a low-key way to spend an evening.
Try an extreme Activity
Weekend travel has become a standard option for many bachelor and bachelorette parties. But travel restrictions or personal health preferences may mean it is not prudent to take a trip to Las Vegas or Cancun. Booking activities that are a little edgy can add some adventure to the festivities if travel is a nonstarter. Some amusement parks are still open, so an evening of riding zero-gravity coasters or freefall bungee jumps could satisfy everyone’s adventurous side. Racetracks offer tourist options where novices can take high-speed

spins around the course. When traveling in small groups, these activities can be possible.
Virtual Karaoke
In-person karaoke nights may be unavailable, but there is a bevy of online sing-along apps that enable participants to sing with backing tracks either for solo performances or with others even
people around the world. Each member of the bachelorette or bachelor party can download the same app and then sing together. Laugh along to renditions of classic tunes or modern favorites.
Celebrate at Home
It may not seem as glamorous as a night out, but home cocktail parties can be customized.
Hire a mixologist to whip up special drinks for the occasion. Caterers may be available to cook personalized meals in your home, providing lessons along the way. Bachelor and bachelorette parties may have to change as the world continues to confront the pandemic. With a few tweaks, these events can still be enjoyable and memorable.

Tips for a successful marriage proposal
W
hile there is no proposal playbook, these guidelines can assist those ready to take the leap.
Add a personal touch. It is easy to get caught up in making a marriage proposal a spectacle or something worthy of a social media post. But taking a sweetheart back to a special place that recalls a significant moment can set the backdrop for a memorable proposal Embrace the old fashioned. Show respect to future in-laws by speaking to them about intentions to propose and ask for their blessings. Get down on bended knee when asking for a sweetheart’s hand. Such
gestures add up to meaningful expressions of love. Consider timing. A person may be so excited to propose that he or she fails to consider how the other person in the relationship is feeling. If that person is overwhelmed by work projects or stressed about upcoming events, consider waiting to propose at a more relaxed time.
Enlist help from others. Ask friends and close family members to be your accomplices so that information can be gathered without generating suspicion. This can be especially helpful when finding the perfect ring.
Keep it simple. Simplicity, even if it means keeping the proposal to yourself until the question has been popped, can make for an extra special moment. Marriage proposals happen every day. With humor, confidence, and a heart full of love, popping the question can be a success.
Exterior renovations that can improve home value
R
enovating a home to improve its value can be a smart investment. Interior improvements, such as updating kitchens and baths, offer good return on investment. Exterior renovations can add value to a home and give it that coveted wow factor. Landscaping Abundant and well-planned landscaping can instantly boost curb appeal. As buyers use the internet to look for their dream homes, there is no denying a beautifully landscaped, nicely photographed property can entice buyers to click and read more about a house. Address insects and minor repairs Improving home value may come
down to fixing areas of the home that negatively affect its appeal to buyers. Hire an inspector to look at key components of the home and recommend repairs. Improve the entryway The front door is the focal point of a home’s exterior. Invest in a new door or paint it a striking color to add appeal. A door provides visual appeal and security buyers look for. Entryway should have a level walkway, steps in good repair, accents free from rust and decorative plants. Outdoor lighting Outdoor lighting can add to the ambiance of a property and serve as a security feature. Utilize different lights: bright light by the entry, uplighting in trees and shrubs for drama, a light-
lined path to the door to improve visibility, and motion-detection lights to improve security of the property. Paint A fresh coat of paint or new (or cleaned) siding can instantly give homes a facelift. Neutral, warm, and inviting colors tend to have the widest appeal. Adding manufactured stone veneer to the home can offer a 94.9 percent ROI, says Remodeling.
