The world is reeling from the loss of iconic actor Chadwick Boseman, who died Friday, August 28, after losing a private battle to colon cancer. Boseman died at home surrounded by his family.

A statement released by his family said Boseman was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2016 and the disease progressed to stage 4. Boseman endured countless surgeries and treatments as he continued to make films from Marshall (directed by Reginald Hudlin), Da 5 Bloods (directed by Spike Lee) and August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (directed by George C. Wolfe and produced by Denzel Washington).

Washington and Boseman were first introduced when Washington paid for

Boseman and several other Howard University students to continue their theater studies by taking a theater course in Oxford.

The Howard University-educated thespian was the star of Marvel’s Black Panther franchise, bringing to life one of the most important and revered superheroes in American film history.

Directed by Ryan Coogler, Black Panther was the first superhero movie to be nominated for a best picture Oscar and one of the highest-grossing films of all time, bringing in over $1billion.

Black Panther became more than a movie, morphing into a celebration of Black culture, art, history, achievement and intellect in addition to highlighting the Black cultural presence and influence in comic book culture.

Overall digital access for Texas students is worse than in the country as a whole, but the biggest victims are low-income, rural and minority students, a study commissioned by the Texas State Teachers Association found.

Inequities in virtual learning capabilities were known before the coronavirus pandemic struck Texas this spring, but they are more critical now that remote learning has assumed a much greater role in public education as educators and parents work to protect students, school employees and their communities.

“The Texas State Teachers Association supports virtual learning as a safe way to provide learning opportunities to Texas children while protecting them, their teachers and their families from the dangerous coronavirus. But our state and federal governments must significantly increase funding for this effort so that all students, regardless of family income, race, ethnicity or home address, have access to the tools they need,” said TSTA President Ovidia Molina.

“These are uncertain times, and we don’t

know how long they will last. Teachers will continue to do their part to educate our students, but the state and federal governments must do a much better job of providing the support and resources that this emergency requires.”

Drawing on data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, Public Policy Associates Inc. (PPA), which conducted the study for TSTA, determined that Texas ranked 46th among the states in overall internet and computer access, 45th in broadband access and 45th in access to both broadband and computers.

Seventy percent of households with schoolaged children in Texas metropolitan areas have access to broadband and computers, but only 50 percent of similar households in non-metro areas do, a 20-point gap.

“In many rural areas, Texans are not able to get high-speed internet access even if they are willing and able to pay for it,” PPA noted in its summary.

Rural communities in Texas faced a health care crisis long before COVID-19.

Over the past decade, 21 rural Texas hospitals have closed. Thirty-two counties have no doctor, and an additional 23 have only one. According to the 2018 Rural Health Report Card published by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Texas earns a D-minus overall.

COVID-19 compounded these problems.

Small hospitals with limited to no intensive-care capacity have been completely overwhelmed. Doctors, nurses, and EMTs have often needed to quarantine, leaving even fewer medical professionals to care for patients.

And urban hospitals where critical patients are typically transferred are reaching capacity.

The pandemic has exacerbated Texas’ rural health crisis and shone a spotlight on the most urgent challenges that must be addressed. Together, we’re fighting for better care, access and outcomes for families in rural communities.

First, we need to ensure rural hospitals can keep their doors open. Congress provided $175 billion to help hospitals, clinics and other providers stay afloat, with at least $11 billion devoted to rural providers.

So far, rural providers in Texas have received more than $720 million. This funding supports resources to keep both patients and health care workers safe today, while maintaining the ability to deliver reliable care tomorrow.

Funding for Texas’ urban hospitals also is a benefit to rural communities. If patients’ needs exceed the capabilities of a small hospital, they’re often transferred to larger facilities in bigger cities. The nearly $4.5 billion Texas’ health care providers have received will help all Texans – regardless of ZIP code –access the care they need, when they need it.

We must also ensure rural hospitals are home to highly trained medical workers – something The University of North Texas Health Science Center (HSC) at Fort Worth is fighting to do.

Since 2010, 110 HSC students have participated as Texas College of Osteopathic Medi-

cine Rural Scholars. On top of their normal curriculum, these students take additional courses to prepare for the unique challenges and opportunities that come with serving rural communities. More than 60 percent of these students are actively practicing in underserved areas, and they’re making quality care a reality for more Texans.

We’re also thinking outside the confines of typical doctor’s appointments. Technology has allowed us to overcome distance barriers in nearly every part of our lives, and health care is no exception. Congress passed legislation allowing rural health centers to utilize telehealth to serve their communities, making long drives or exposure to others a thing of the past for many patients.

In March, HSC transitioned from in-person to virtual care, and it has conducted 8,000 telemedicine appointments in specialties including family medicine, pediatrics, geriatrics, cardiology, and dermatology. This ensured HSC’s patients could continue receiving the high-quality care they needed despite the obstacles presented by COVID-19.

But nearly one-third of rural Texans can’t access reliable internet services, precluding them from not only telemedicine, but also virtual learning and working. Broadband access is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity – and we need to ensure rural Texans aren’t left on the wrong side of the digital divide.

Congress provided hundreds of millions of dollars to help both providers and patients have access to the broadband and equipment they need to get connected. Legislation recently introduced by Senator Cornyn would triple the investment already made in telehealth, with at least $80 million going to small and rural providers.

A person’s home address should never determine the outcome of a health condition.

Whether they’re battling COVID-19, cancer, or a heart problem, every single Texan deserves access to quality health care, and that’s what we’re fighting to deliver.

• White students (78 percent) have greater access to both broadband and computers than Blacks (63 percent) or Hispanics (59 percent). The gap between Hispanic and white students in Texas is larger than in the country as a whole.

• Only 70 percent of all school-aged children in Texas have access at home to what can be considered high-speed internet access.

• Thirty-three percent lack either a computer or broadband access.

PPA suggested the digital deficit for some groups may be even worse than these numbers indicate because the American Community Survey, on which the study was based, collects data on household access to computers, not how many or what kind.

“It would be helpful for the ACS to ask respondents how many devices they have in the household. It would also be helpful to understand whether or not households with school-aged children are relying only on a handheld device, such as a cell phone, for internet access as opposed to a computer, tablet, or other device with a keyboard,” the report said.

“Closing the gap will require additional dollars for low-income neighborhoods, rural and hard-to-reach communities, and in communities of color,” the report said, as well as for additional training for teachers and support staff.

Molina added: “This is another reason Gov. Abbott must act now to call off STAAR testing this year. That will reduce student and educator stress and provide additional resources for computers and internet access for students in need. How can the state expect students to properly prepare for STAAR when many don’t even have the appropriate remote learning tools that will be necessary for much of this school year?”

The Center participates in the COVID-19 testing program for uninsured individuals as provided through the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, and the Coronavirus, Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. Patients showing COVID-19 symptoms and who test negative for flu and strep can receive a visit and testing at no cost.

Wellness Pointe’s COVID-19 testing program is just one of multiple services it offers for the well-being of local citizens.

Ending school to prison pipeline Many school districts are deciding that police in classrooms cause more problems than they solve.

For starters, school districts across the country are grappling with budget cuts and pandemic safety. But there’s something else, too: In the wake of a national uprising against police violence, many districts are rethinking what constitutes school safety.

After the 2018 Parkland shooting, many districts rushed to put armed security guards and police officers in schools. That year, states allocated an additional $965 million to law enforcement in schools.

The idea has been to keep children safe.

But there’s simply no proof that armed security officers keep children any safer in schools — Parkland itself already had an armed officer on site.

In fact, there’s growing evidence these officers make many students less safe.

For instance, Black students are 3.5 times more likely to be arrested at school than white students, despite exhibiting similar behavioral patterns.

Low-income students are also disproportionately harmed. According to a massive 2016 study, the arrest rate in California schools where more than 80 percent of students rely on free or reducedprice lunch is seven times the arrest rate in schools where most students don’t.

These arrests do long-term damage. In what’s known as the “school-to-prison pipeline,” students who are arrested at school, often for routine disciplinary issues,

are more likely to find themselves caught up in the criminal justice system as adults.

This pipeline is just one of the ways poor communities and communities of color are over-policed and hypersurveilled nationwide. But now, that narrative is beginning to change.

With the growing movement to defund police — and many schools facing steep budget cuts — public school districts are reckoning with police brutality inside the classroom. As a result, school boards nationwide, from Oakland to Phoenix to Minneapolis, have voted to remove cops from their schools and end contracts with police.

Removing police is an important first step towards disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline, but it needs to be part of a broader effort. After all, young people face the same racist policing outside their schools.

As of a few years ago, Black youth were over five times more likely to be detained or committed to the prison system than white youth, leading to a lifetime of struggle. According to MIT research, 40 percent of people incarcerated as juveniles were locked up in adult facilities by the age of 25.

Again, researchers have found no significant behavioral differences between Black and white adolescents: They are roughly equally likely to get into fights, carry weapons, steal, use or sell controlled substances, or skip school.

Yet it’s mostly children of color who are criminalized for these behaviors, and the impacts are far-reaching.

The school-to-prison pipeline is one of the most damaging aspects of mass incarceration in our country. It’s welcome news that many districts are moving away from officers in classrooms, especially when students have enough to worry about with the pandemic.

But schools parallel society at large, and the school-to-prison pipeline affects kids well outside the walls of the classroom.

Efforts to defund the police must extend beyond those walls as well.

USDA is serving up diseased chicken Federal regulators recently okayed selling chickens suffering from Avian Leukosis, which produces cancerous tumors.

Top regulatory officials in Trump’s government keep chanting the same oneword mantra: “Deregulate. Deregulate.

Deregulate.”

Day after day, these agency bosses have been “liberating” greedy business interests to do their damnedest to consumers, workers, the environment — and even our chicken dinner.

Yes, chicken. Instead of Kentucky-fried

or tacos con pollo, they’re serving up “Chicken á la Avian Leukosis.” That’s chicken infected with a virus that produces cancerous tumors and lesions on the poor birds.

In July, the U.S. Agriculture Department’s Food Safety and Inspection Service rubber stamped a demand by Tyson Foods and other multibilliondollar meat conglomerates to deregulate chicken processing rules so they can sell chickens diseased with Avian Leukosis for human consumption.

The huge brand-name marketers would not even have to put a label on the package so consumers could know what we’re buying.

As always, the industry line is: “It’s perfectly safe… trust us!” They claim that slaughterhouse line workers can simply cut out any tumors they see, then process the rest of the animal.

There are two problems with this claim: First, Avian Leukosis can be a systemic disease passing through the blood, so slicing tumors doesn’t necessarily eliminate the virus.

Second, line workers don’t have time to see tumors, much less remove them, since Trump’s corporate-hugging regulators have also allowed poultry factories to speed up their processing lines to 175 birds per minute.

This means each worker handles up to three chickens a second!

Trump & Co. assert that their policy of relentless deregulation is necessary to make the system fair for corporations. However, as Lyndon Johnson used to say about such political hokum, “They can’t make chicken salad out of chicken s—.”

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (UTHSCT) Associate Professor Dr. Torry A. Tucker has been selected to receive the 2020 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award from The University of Texas System Board of Regents to recognize extraordinary classroom performance and innovation.

The honor reflects the great respect students, peers and presidents have for a recipient’s teaching abilities and contributions.

“This award is so well deserved, and we are so proud of Dr. Tucker,” said UTHSCT President Dr. Kirk A. Calhoun. “Great faculty, like him, will lead and educate a new generation of scientists and healthcare professionals. We appreciate what Dr. Tucker does for our university every day, and I look forward to when we can have an in-person and safe celebration of his award.”

Dr. Tucker is an associate professor of cellular and molecular biology. He also serves as the associate dean for faculty and education initiatives. Dr. Tucker was trained as a cell biologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a focus on diseases of the lung, specifically cystic fibrosis. He came to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler as a postdoctoral fellow in 2007 and joined the faculty in 2009. His current research investigates the causes of pleural scarring and subsequent fibrosis. He also studies pathways involved in the development and progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

Dr. Tucker receives a certificate, medallion and $25,000 in recognition of his impact on students and the institution. Tucker was one of 27 faculty members representing 14 UT academic and health institutions to receive the 2020 Regent’s Outstanding Teaching Award.

“These awards demonstrate the Board’s appreciation for exceptional educators at each of the 14 UT institutions,” Board of Regents Chairman Kevin P. Eltife said. “Their dedication to teaching excellence and student success is instrumental to achieving our education, research and

healthcare missions.”

“Great teachers inspire, motivate and challenge their students,” UT System Chancellor James B. Milliken said. “We honor these outstanding educators for their service to Texas and Texans.”

The University of Texas System Board of Regents established the annual awards program in 2008 to honor exemplary classroom performance and innovation.

Since then, the Board has presented more than $20 million to over 750 outstanding UT educators.

Nominees undergo a series of rigorous evaluations by students, peer faculty and external reviewers. The review panels consider a range of activities and criteria in their evaluations of a candidate’s teaching performance, including classroom expertise, curricula quality, innovative course development and student learning outcomes.

Pausing for a moment, he turned to one student and said, “And what, William, are you going to draw?”

“I believe that I will draw a picture of Christ,” he replied.

“But,” said the professor, “no one knows what He looks like.”

“They will know what He looks like when I’m through,” said William.

People may see a representation of Christ on canvas, paper, or cloth, but God expects them to see Christ in us - by the way we live. Scripture clearly explains, time and time again, that the Christian is the one, not an artist, who is to provide a “picture of what Christ looks like.”

Those around us who know we are Christians develop their understanding and image of Christ by watching us: what

we do, how we live, what we say. They “read” about Christ in how we act and react to the events that come into our lives.

They “see” Christ in what we do and how we do things for others. Simply stated, we are responsible for showing those around us His love.

A Christian is to have a “mind” that thinks as Jesus thought, a “heart” that breaks when the ravages of sin are visible, a “hand” that reaches out to those in need, and a “voice” through which He speaks to share His message.

Prayer: Our Father, You have given us a tremendous responsibility to represent You to others. We admit we are unable to do this unless we allow You to live through us. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

The University of Texas at Tyler announced that Dr. Michael Gangone and Jessica Coleman have been honored as two of the best educators in the UT System.

The UT Tyler faculty members received the 2020 Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award.

They are among 27 honorees from the system’s 14 academic and health institutions who were recognized and will each receive $25,000, a medallion and a certificate in appreciation of their impact on students.

“We appreciate the Board of Regents for honoring these professors and for recognizing their excellent contributions to student success at UT Tyler,” said Dr. Amir Mirmiran, UT Tyler provost.

Gangone, an associate professor of civil engineering, has a strong passion for engineering education. His expertise and interests include innovative bridge research and design methods as well as the development of structural health monitoring and condition assessment techniques for highway bridges and other structural systems. In total, he has more than 50 publications in the area of structural monitoring, innovative bridge design and engineering education pedagogy.

He has also been recognized with the White Fellowship in Teaching and the Minnie

Jessica Coleman

Stevens Piper Professor Nominee for UT Tyler (2018), the UT Tyler College of Engineering Most Outstanding Teaching Award (2017), the Alpha Chi Outstanding Faculty Award in the UT Tyler College of Engineering 2013) and is a six-time recipient of the UT Tyler Department of Civil Engineering Outstanding Faculty Award, which is voted on by students.

Coleman, lecturer in biology, has been part of the Department of Biology since 2008. Her primary focus is teaching freshman the basic concepts of science and laying the foundation for biological knowledge.

Cotton St. and follow the route and traffic control directions to receive the free produce items.

The distribution is drivethru only, and walkups will not be accepted. There are no eligibility requirements or identification needed. Multiple households can ride together.

To pick up produce for someone else, a hand-written note from that person with their

name, address, permission for you to pick up for them and their signature must be provided. The physical note or a picture of it will be accepted.
