Tex/Mex Cuisine Served at Patriotic Powwow By Joycelyne Fadojutimi It might have seemed like a strange place for a food competition. Longview based Johnson and Pace Engineering, Architecture and Surveying is generally associated with much less sumptuous subjects than who has the best chili, but it does have a large kitchen.

This room was crowded with employees who were checking out not only various boilers of chili, but desserts and beverages to swill on top of all the savory selections.

The City of Longview Partners in Prevention recently recognized two reformers who embody peace, diversity and unity. The honorees LaDelle Kay and Kasha Williams demonstrate that unity and diversity are important components of a flourishing community. Besides, a city is stronger together-when no one is left out for any reason. The importance of the award cannot be overstated because it is a lifetime award for social justice. Jasmine Stoker, City of Longview Liaison gave the history of Unity and Diversity Committee. LaDelle, the last of 15 children has worn many hats. Her non-profit experience started in Massachusetts, then to Greensboro North Carolina before arriving to Longview in 2001. She has volunteered for several organizations including Hope for Youth, East Texas Anti-

Trafficking Team, and Women in Longview Day to mention a few. She will always be remembered as a “connector of people.” Though she retired from Greater Longview United Way, LaDelle is still out in the community volunteering and connecting people to the services they need. Friends and co-workers describe LaDelle as “exceptional, passionate, connector, provider of information for marginalized population, team builder and more.” She expressed her gratitude, “I am very humbled by this award. All I can say is thank you.” Her dream is to see a Longview where everyone has a chance to be what God has called them to be. LaDelle’s theological background compels her to be a servant leader. Her operative scripture is: “But he’s already made it plain how to live, what

Friends and associates describe Kasha as “a strong woman, someone who makes a difference in the community, leader who came back to Longview, embraces diversity and unity, believes everyone is important and more. Kasha after thanking the nominating committee advised her listeners to “get an education, then get your platform.” Since Jesus Christ is her role-model, she charged everyone to “love one another, build bridges instead of walls.” Furthermore, Vance Freeman of Silver Grizzly Espresso and Kevin Hawkins of Divine Catering received special recognition for their work in the community.

It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don’t take yourself too seriously— take God seriously. (Micah 6:8 MSG). Kasha Williams’ foundation is firmly rooted in the scriptures. By the way, she is a 6th generation member of St. Mark CME Church. A graduate of Prairie View A&M, Kasha got an early start in leadership from two loving parents, Cathy and Cedric. They allowed her to be inquisitive, speak freely and take charge if needed. It is no wonder, she became a City Councilwoman and the first woman to run for Gregg County Commissioner in District 4. But that is not all. She has been known to stand

Longview Regional Medical Center sole hospital in the area to earn a 4 Star quality and safety rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services By Bob Moos Have you wondered how your area hospitals stack up in terms of the quality of care they provide? Emergencies obviously call for rushing to the nearest hospital. But when you have time to plan, it is worth doing some research and finding out which hospitals do the best job of caring for their patients. Medicare’s Hospital Compare website – at medicare.gov/ hospitalcompare/search.html – has made it easier for you to check that. The site has overall star ratings to help you better understand which hospitals are top-performers, which are average and which need improvement. The ratings range from one to five stars, with five being the best. The Hospital Compare site already enjoys a solid reputation with the public, showing how thousands of hospitals scored on various indicators of quality care. You can compare hospitals on the basis of such factors as clinical outcomes, customer satisfaction and patient safety. The just-updated overall star ratings offer a snapshot of particular hospitals’ quality of care, by summing up individual measures of hospital performance already posted on the website. The ratings reflect such factors as how often patients get infections after

surgery, how long patients must wait in the emergency department before seeing a doctor or nurse, and how likely patients are to get readmitted to the hospital after a heart attack. Medicare assigned stars to 3,725 Medicare-certified hospitals nationwide. Another 848 couldn’t be included, mostly because they didn’t have enough data to properly evaluate them. They may have been too new or too small and, therefore, had too few cases on which to base ratings. The ratings are updated regularly on the website, as the government continues to collect the most recent data. Nationally, 293 hospitals received five stars, 1,086 rated four stars, 1,264 scored three stars, 800 received two stars, and 282 had just one star.

The 266 rated Texas hospitals scored an average of 3.2 stars for overall quality of care. Twentyfour hospitals received five stars, 84 rated four stars, 95 scored three stars, 53 received two stars, and 10 had just one star. Longview – Longview Regional Medical Center -- 4 Other Texas hospitals’ star ratings can be found at medicare.gov/ hospitalcompare/search.html. By using star ratings on its Compare websites, Medicare is trying to help you make more informed decisions about your health care. The public reporting also gives low-performing providers a compelling incentive to improve their practices and procedures and, hence, their scores. Nursing Home Compare, Home Health Compare and the Medicare Plan Finder also use star ratings to help you check out health care providers and choose one with quality in mind. Of course, as informative as these websites can be, they can’t tell the whole story about where to go for care. They’re simply a

screening tool that lets you focus on a few providers that interest you. Visit with your doctor about the best hospital for you. Research shows that some hospitals do better than others at treating certain conditions. And talk to family members and friends about what they liked or disliked about their recent hospital stays and which facilities they’d recommend. Medicare also recently updated its “Guide to Choosing a Hospital,” which includes a checklist of questions to ask your doctor and explains how to find the hospital that’s the right fit for you. A free copy can be downloaded at medicare.gov or requested by calling Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. Once you’ve done your homework, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you’ve made an informed choice about your care. Then you can concentrate on the rest of your preparations for your hospital stay. IRS waives penalty for farmers, fishermen

What are politicians going to do about it I gave GM 20 years of my life. In return they took my job — and the government keeps rewarding them for it.

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service will waive the estimated tax penalty for any qualifying farmer or fisherman who files his or her 2018 federal income tax return and pays any tax due by Monday, April 15, 2019. The deadline is Wednesday, April 17, 2019, for taxpayers residing in Maine or Massachusetts. The IRS is providing this relief because, due to certain rule changes, many farmers and fishermen may have difficulty accurately determining their tax liability by the March 1 deadline that usually applies to them. For tax year 2018, an individual who received at least two-thirds of his or her total gross income from farming or fishing during either 2017 or 2018 qualifies as a farmer or fisherman.

GM job lost, there will be three or four jobs lost in the surrounding community. Lordstown has given a lot over the years to GM — from tax breaks and subsidies during the auto bailout to a skilled, hard-working workforce. Now, GM is just walking away and sending our jobs to Mexico. They don’t seem to care that they’re taking our hopes for the future with them.

For the past 20 years, I’ve walked at least nine miles a day on the body shop floor of the General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio, where I help assemble the Chevy Cruze. In a few weeks, when GM shutters our plant, I’ll walk my last mile. I don’t know what’s next for me and nearly 15,000 other workers who are being laid off at GM plants across the country. What I do know is that GM is forcing my fellow workers to choose between mandatory relocation to other plants, hundreds of miles away from their families, and the unemployment line. For me and many of my coworkers, this is a false choice. I can’t just pick up and leave. My entire family lives in the Lordstown area — my 84-yearold mother is too frail to move and she relies on me for her care. I’m also expecting my first grandchild here in June. But if I don’t relocate, I may not be able to find another job that pays a living wage.Which is why I’m choosing instead to fight for the fair treatment and dignity that I deserve. The truth is that our political leaders have failed America’s workers. President Donald Trump promised to revive the auto industry, but he hasn’t done anything to force GM to save our jobs. In fact, instead of punishing GM, the Trump administration has awarded the company with billions of dollars in federal contracts. GM isn’t the only corporation that’s profiting from our tax dollars even as it betrays workers. New research from Good Jobs Nation shows that

185,000 jobs have been lost to foreign competition on Trump’s watch, and that his administration has awarded more than $115 billion in federal contracts to companies such as GM that continue to offshore jobs. Our tax dollars shouldn’t reward job killers. That’s why the thousands of workers who are being laid off by GM — and the surrounding communities hurt by GM’s closure of our productive, profitable plant — are calling on the 2020 presidential candidates to come to Lordstown to tell us how they’re going to do what Trump won’t do: hold GM accountable and save our jobs. Politicians who ignore Rust Belt towns like Lordstown do so at their peril. Returns from the recent midterm election indicate that Trumbull County — which flipped from blue to red in 2016 — flipped back to blue in 2018. Workers in our county realized that Trump’s continued inaction to bring jobs back spoke louder than his rhetoric. With unemployment and poverty rates — at 6 percent and 17 percent, respectively — well above the national averages, we need politicians who will do what it takes to turn things around. Here in Lordstown, GM was the only game in town for workers looking for a decent wage to support their families. What’s more, our plant supported many other jobs in the community. It’s estimated that for every

STATE/NATIONAL

We need politicians who will stand on our side, not on the side of corporations that only care about their profit margins. I hope to see the 2020 presidential candidates here in Lordstown soon. And I hope to hear them outline their plans to hold GM and other offshoring corporations accountable. We need good jobs here now. Our future and the future of our community depend on it.

The city that refused to play Amazon’s game San Antonio told Jeff Bezos to beat it over a year before New York sent him packing.

To be eligible for the waiver, qualifying taxpayers must attach Form 2210-F, available on IRS.gov, to their 2018 income tax return. This form can be submitted either electronically or on paper. The taxpayer’s name and identifying number, usually a Social Security number, must be entered at the top of the form. The waiver box— Part I, Box A—should be checked. The rest of the form should be left blank. Further details can be found in Notice 2019-17, posted on IRS.gov.

The richest man in the world, who heads one of the world’s largest and richest corporations, is also filthy rich in arrogance and pomposity. Jeff Bezos of Amazon demanded that a city’s officials kowtow to him by handing billions of taxpayer dollars to his retail behemoth, essentially bribing him to locate an Amazon headquarters there. But — lo and behold — the city mustered its collective integrity and pride to say “no” to his devil’s bargain. The city I’m bragging on isn’t New York City, which recently made national news by rejecting Amazon’s attempt to fleece its taxpayers. Rather, I’m saluting San Antonio, Texas, which in 2017 simply refused to play Bezos’ con game when he first rolled it out. While 238 cities and states groveled in front of the diminutive potentate, San Antonio’s mayor and top county official sent a “Dear Jeff” letter kissing him off.

They said their city has much to offer, but any development deal “has to be the right fit; not just for the company, but for the entire community,” adding that “blindly giving away the farm isn’t our style.” The officials wrote that a key criterion for awarding any incentives was whether a company is “a good corporate citizen.” Noting that Amazon almost certainly had already chosen its preferred location, they called the national “search” a money-grubbing scam. “This public process is, intentionally or not, creating a bidding war amongst states and cities,” they charged. Why should public officials anywhere be throwing billions of scarce public dollars at a pompous corporate prince who neither needs nor deserves such tribute? City and state officials everywhere need to follow the example of New York and San Antonio, agreeing to stop bidding against each other in the corporate bribe racket.

AUSTIN – Attorney General Ken Paxton has issued a consumer alert regarding persons alleging to be priests or pastors texting members of the church and asking them to buy gift cards for a false charitable cause. Texans have received deceptive texts from people pretending to be pastors, then requesting that they purchase a gift card and send them the information to access that card. The scammers claim these gift cards are needed for some charitable reason but insist they cannot pick up a gift card themselves and the purchaser will be reimbursed. “All Texans should be aware of unsolicited calls and texts from scammers impersonating leaders in their Church. This is a dirty trick, criminals are using to make a quick buck at the expense of people of faith,” Attorney General Paxton said. “My office stands ready to assist all hard-working Texans who are harmed by these schemes. The consumer protection section of our website contains several resources on how to recognize, prevent and report scams like this. Being

informed and remaining vigilant is the best way to prevent fraud and loss.” We believe that the scammers are using information found on churches’ website or in churches’ online bulletins to trick members of the church into sending them gift cards. Churches throughout Texas have seen reports of this scam. Report suspected fraud to the attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division by calling toll-free 1-800-6210508 or by filing an online complaint at https://www. texasattorneygeneral.gov/ consumer-protection/fileconsumer-complaint.

WHAT’S SO GOOD

ABOUT GOD? “Wow!” said an associate as a group of us left a restaurant after a dinner meeting. “That was a really good meal!” “Good?” questioned another. “What do you mean good? That’s one of the worst meals I’ve ever paid for. It was horrible!” “Not so fast,” said another. “Part of it was really bad and part was fairly good. At least, that’s my opinion.” “Good” is in the eye of the beholder. You and I might experience the same event together – as the meal mentioned above – but have entirely different opinions about it. But when the author of Psalm 100 was ending his thoughts about God, he said, “For the Lord is good and His love endures forever.” He was convinced that “God was good.” In fact, this entire

Psalm is written as a Psalm that expresses his reasons to give thanks to God. Years ago when the AngloSaxons were converted to Christ they searched for a word in their language that they could all agree upon that expressed the character of the divine Being of the Bible. They described stories of His faithfulness, His grace, His holiness, His mercy, His power, His love, His salvation and asked, “What one word will express all of these words?” After a discussion they all agreed: “The good!” And “good” is the old English word for “God.” When we look at the “big picture” of all that God has done for us, to us and in us, it is certainly appropriate for us to describe Him, as they did, as

“The Good.” Prayer: Father, when we consider all of Your ways and the wonder of Your works we too agree, our Lord is Good! In Jesus’ Name, Amen. Scripture for Today: Psalm

Continuously focus on being a visionary thinker, a great communicator, being organized and able to follow through. As a police officer, what do you want your legacy to be? That I was always fair, consistent, trustworthy and reliable. What was one of your toughest days on the job? A tough day for me is dealing with any criminal act committed towards a child. How does your family feel about you being a police officer? My family is supportive and proud of me. If you could go back in time and tell your younger self one thing, what would it be? Although education is continuous, start young. I wasted so much time playing video games as a teenager. I look back and think about all of the missed opportunities to learn and be creative. As a champion of the community and symbol of justice how can we as a community better support the police? Don’t rush to judge based on the actions of others and things that happen in other places. Without the community’s support, it is nearly impossible for the department to solve crimes. Do policemen really like donuts? We’re just like anyone else, of course some of us do. School Spotlight Pine Tree High School School Spotlight How is water cleaned and delivered? Most of the water on Earth is in oceans. The water in oceans is salty, and people and most animals cannot drink salt water. The water in lakes, rivers and underground is called fresh water. Fresh water is used to make drinking water to help us grow and be healthy. Water treatment makes water taste good and safe to drink. At the water treatment plant, fresh water is cleaned using filters and chemicals to get rid of germs and pollution.

From the water treatment plant, the clean water moves through large pipes under the street that connect to every house, school, or building to deliver clean water. This is the water that comes out of our taps. In your scientist’s notebook, make a list of places where the water travels. Then in the table, connect the places in the order that the water reaches them according to the maze on page 13.

Before the modern age of computerized graphic arts, animation was much more quaint and personal--artists drew each individual film frame by hand. At twentyfour frames per second, this required a tremendous amount of time and effort for each animated film or segment. Still, like everything else, the modern, computer age has come full force under the expert direction of many artists. Making moving images possible and developing the techniques that have made such animation possible were major milestones. The roots of this industry-wide accomplishment go way back. Back in 1824, Peter Roget presented to the British Royal Society his paper The Persistence of Vision With Regard to

Moving Objects. In 1831 came a device developed by Dr. Joseph Antoine Plateau and Dr. Simon Rittrer. They called it the phenakitstoscope. It created the illusion of movement as a viewer watched a rotating disc with small windows. Behind each window was another disc framing sequence of images. Rotating these discs at a specific speed produced synchronization of the windows, creating an animated effect. In 1964, Bell Laboratories employee Ken Knowlton advanced this technique in developing the methods that have made modern animated movies possible. Young scholars at Pine Tree High school learning this technology in Ms. Rutledge’s class are loving it. “We have a lot of fun in this class,”

she says. “Students demonstrate that you can have fun at hard work.” She has three practicum students who are already well-versed in modern animation procedures. They are quick to point out their love and enthusiasm for what they are studying. “This class allows me to show the creative side of myself,” says student Harleigh Wright. “I hope to use the skills from this class in my future.” She aspires to be a globe-trotting photographer who uses photography to capture hard-hitting images that tell stories that may be difficult to put into words. Belgian exchange student Emilie Magnan loves attending Pine Tree. She has already produced an animated short

Winter Wonderland!

I should be hibernating, but Mom and Dad let me have one weekend in the snow! I love skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, rolling giant snowballs to make snowbears, and building snow forts and igloos. It’s a beautiful winter wonderland out here! I also want to eat “winter foods”: thick, hot, potato or chicken noodle soups, beef stews, casseroles of bubbly, golden macaroni and cheese, chicken pot pies and, for dessert, bread pudding!

Can you find the three snowflakes that are the same?

Johnson and Pace is a multidisciplinary firm built on a foundation emphasizing exemplary service. It is so successful in this aim that it has a sterling reputation for excellence. As an engineer with the company, Spraggins loves his job, his co-workers and his employer. A graduate of Longview Christian School (LCS) and Texas Tech University he grew up eyeing the military and attended ROTC at Texas Tech with the intent of serving our country. Johnson and Pace, however, made him an offer too good to refuse. Although he still served his country in the Army Reserves, he hooked up with Johnson and Pace as his life’s work. “The biggest thing is the support I got from my company,” he says. His civilian employer worked with him to accommodate his periodic absences while in uniform. This heartfelt concern for its workers’ loved ones is very reassuring and endearing in an era when few firms bother with much more than profits. Johnson and Pace emphasizes patriotism along with profits. Spraggins

was assigned to the 1st Expeditionary Civil Engineer Group based at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. This is a construction unit working on projects throughout the Middle East. Spraggins was with the outfit from July 2018 to January 2019. Although with pre-deployment training and postdeployment recovery time, he was away from late May to the first of February. He learned from other reservists that some employers are not accommodating when their workers signed on in the reserves. The Uniformed Services Employment and Re-Deployment Rights Act of 1994 requires businesses to allow their employees to serve in the reserves, allowing them to leave when they are called up, and that they still have their jobs when they return. Some companies, though, go only as far as they are legally required to, and never above and beyond. Spraggins reports that Johnson and Pace Vice-President Johnson Wade and Project Manager Larry Newman have been very supportive about his deployment. This made the transitions between civilian and military lifestyles much smoother than in many cases. In return, Spraggins obtained two American flags that had fluttered from a B-1B bomber during a combat mission. He also learned about awards and incentives made available by Employer

Support of the Guard and Reserve. This Department of Defense program strives to “promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve Component Service members and their civilian employers and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee’s committment.” Spraggins successfully nominated Johnson and Pace for this program’s Service Member Patriot Award. A grateful Newman spoke emotionally about Spraggins and his devotion to both his company and his country. “I have been close to him,” said Newman. “It is a humbling experience to receive a flag that was flown on the back of a bomber. It is very humbling to be honored like this.” Wade had not anticipated the intense, almost spiritual impact of the ceremony. Still, he spoke with strength and conviction upon receiving his award. “We at Johnson and Pace are grateful for his service. It never entered my mind that we would be appreciated like this,” he said. “We appreciate Nathaniel. He is a good engineer. We appreciate his service to our nation. As a family-oriented company we gladly welcome him back home with us.” Patriotism and capitalism are indeed great partners.

16 Diabetes is a killer that afflicts multitudes, although many live for years and even decades with the disease. The effects can be lethal, but generally there are symptoms that tip off those with type 2 diabetes that they have the affliction even though they can be mild to the point of going unnoticed. Common symptoms include: • Frequent urination, Chronic thirst, Feeling very hungry despite eating, Fatigue, Blurred vision • Cuts and bruises that are abnormally slow to heal, Noticeable weight loss even though the patient is actually eating more (Type 1). Tingling/pain/numbness in hands and feet (Type 2) According to the American Diabetes Association, the medical community is committed to helping the millions of Americans who already have and are at risk of this illness. Education is a prime treatment. Informing the whole world about diabetes, its causes, effects and treatments is the purpose of the following questions and answers. What does excess weight have to do with diabetes? As is the case with many physical ailments being overweight is a major factor, but there are other aspects to consider. Person’s amount of physical activity, family histories, ethnicity and age must also be taken into account. Too many are under the misconception that weight is the sole cause of type 2 diabetes, but many type 2 sufferers are either only slightly overweight or not overweight at all. Still, dietary habits are significant. Does eating sweets and sugars cause diabetes? Any diet high in calories (including sugar) contributes to weight gain, which is certain to place one at risk for type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is determined mainly by genetics, lifestyle and other, unknown

HEALTH and AIDS combined. Being diabetic nearly doubles the risk of heart attack. On the plus side diabetes is an illness that can be managed. DIABETES PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT: FROM HELEN DANIELS, MD Two primary things determine the development of anything in life – GENETICS and ENVIRONMENT. While we can do nothing to change our genetic predisposition to diabetes, we HELEN DANIELS, MD can do our best to decrease our risk and/ or delay onset of disease by optimizing our ENVIRONMENT, that is, optimizing the bodies in which we live. LIFESTYLE CHOICES will dictate this and only we can determine this. Here are some goals to aim for in the path to prevention. LOSE excess body FAT, and in particular belly fat. hunger, weight loss, itching) and see your doctor for an ANNUAL PHYSICAL EXAM which will also include screening labs for common diseases. Diabetes Management Should diabetes develop, all hope is not lost. Your doctor in conjunction with you, will develop an individualized patient centered approach to the treatment of your disease with an array of meds available, Your goal is to KNOW YOUR NUMBERS and to start and maintain the lifestyle changes previously outlined in order to get to those targets. Here are some numbers to know. Glucose Levels: While blood sugar levels are individualized, the ADA recommends the following target for most nonpregnant adults with diabetes Hb A1C <7% or an average glucose reading of 154 mg/dl Fasting blood sugars of 80-130 2-hour Post meal sugars of <180 BP goal of < 140/90 Cholesterol levels. Improve your cholesterol profile. Bad cholesterol ( LDL ) targets no longer apply, however obtaining values of < 100 with improved good cholesterol ( HDL ) levels of > 40 are preferred. The current standard of care recommends use of a lipid lowering agent or statin in all diabetics, regardless of how good the cholesterol profile is, due to a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes. The American diabetic association (ADA) recommends that you be SMART, that is, that you set Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Relevant Time-bound goals. It’s your destiny that hangs in the balance and attaining well planned, timely, worthy goals leads to freedom. And as always be forever in pursuit of YOUR ULTM8 IDL.
