Longview Regional Medical Center is set to host a FREE heart screen for the East Texas community’s youth, ages 14-18, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Longview Regional Medical Center campus, located at 2901 N. Fourth St. The event will be held in the hospital’s Outpatient Surgery/ Surgical Service Entrance, located between the 707 and the 709 Hollybrook buildings. Parking will be available in the parking garage located off Hollybrook Drive, on the southwest side of the Longview Regional campus. Longview Regional has hosted the free teen heart screening for seven years, screening more than 2,500 East Texas teen hearts at no charge. Longview Regional partners with the Championship Hearts Foundation, a Texas nonprofit agency to host the screening. All active East Texas students who participate in athletics, cheerleading, marching band, drill team or other strenuous sports are encouraged to get their heart screened for possible deadly genetic heart conditions, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The Championship Hearts screening includes a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and a limited two-dimensional echocardiogram (ECHO) (picture of the heart) to detect Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), the leading cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. Both the ECG and ECHO are non-invasive and painless and are valued over $700. Results of the screening are immediate. The Championship Hearts screening model is endorsed by the Texas Chapter of the American College of Cardiology as a quality initiative. “Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a genetic heart condition that usually doesn’t impair physical activity, but it can possess an increased risk for a potentially fatal rhythm problem that could happen right on the playing field,” Regional Clinics cardiologist Dr. Jonathan Greifenkamp said. “HCM can be difficult to diagnose during a physical examination but is very easily detected with an

4 OPINION Emancipation trail will reflect history of slavery February 13, 2020

February 13, 2020

STATE/NATIONAL TAX SCAMS continued from page 1

The schemes typically involve phony or “spoofed” email instructions that appear to be from high-ranking company officials, often a CEO. The emails instruct employees to wire cash or provide information such as W-2 wage and tax statements. The schemes target a wide variety of businesses, from large corporations to small businesses to nonprofit groups. BEC scams take many forms, but a common one is cybercriminals sending emails pretending to be the boss. Justin Huffaker, Vice President of Strategic Technology for Datamax, a BBB Accredited Business, describes malicious efforts like this as social engineering. These efforts are increasingly targeting end users, making employee awareness and education an essential part of any cybersecurity strategy. Huffaker provides one example of how a social engineered scam might work: • A cybercriminal scans a company website to determine who the senior leadership team is (business owners, presidents, CEOs)

The dance between Lee and Trump won’t last long, but their partnership is leading to something that will endure.

Senator John Cornyn

Rare, if ever, has there been a time when President Donald Trump has made Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee want to dance with joy.

The Houston Democrat has been one of Trump’s most persistent critics since he took office, and the president hasn’t had much good to say about Lee. But let’s give credit to both, as well as Sen. John Cornyn, for working together to honor African American history and telling a more expansive and accurate story of how critical slavery was to the development of the state and nation. “I feel like doing a dance,” Lee said after Trump signed a bill co-authored by Lee and Cornyn that paves a path toward a 51mile Emancipation Trail from Galveston to Houston. The bill commissions a study for this trail and is a necessary first step toward a national landmark commemorating when Texas slaves learned they were free. On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger and Union troops sailed into Galveston Bay, where he issued General Order No. 3 informing them of the Emancipation Proclamation that President Abraham Lincoln had signed nearly 2½ years earlier. The proposed trail would begin at the building where Granger made his announcement and would go along Interstate 45 and Texas 3 to Freedman’s Town before ending in Emancipation

Park in Houston. After that first Juneteenth, Freedman’s Town, located in Houston’s Fourth Ward, became a destination for newly free blacks from Texas and Louisiana. The Emancipation Trail will be only the second National Historic Trail honoring African American history, the other one being the 54 miles between Selma and Montgomery in Alabama — which, in a march led by Martin Luther King Jr. in 1965, capped a civil rights campaign that would lead to passage of the Voting Rights Act. Given the long presence of African Americans in the United States and their deep cultural impact, it’s shameful no other trails acknowledge their presence and contributions. This is even more reason why a tip of the hat should be given to Lee, Cornyn and Trump. Their bipartisan effort to give a fuller version of our nation’s history should inspire other efforts and lead to more National Historic Trails honoring those too often ignored. The dance between Lee and Trump won’t last long, but their partnership is leading to something that will endure. This OPED was first published in San Antonio Express

You might have missed it amid the impeachment coverage, but the president is reintroducing catastrophic Reagan-era disability cuts. can expect to be denied your first time, and you might go through years of appeals. Third, being on disability means living in poverty. The payments are small. There’s no thrill of free money. If you can work, you’re better off working. The people I know who are on disability all tried and tried and tried to work first. In some cases it was a matter of personal pride and self-worth. It does not feel good to admit to yourself that you cannot work and you need public assistance. By the time someone ends up on SSDI or SSI, they have no other choice. These are the people Trump is targeting with his latest proposal, which stems from the false idea that disabled people are defrauding taxpayers by receiving benefits when they could actually just go get jobs. Rehashing a Reagan-era disaster, Trump’s version will require some people with disabilities that won’t get better to re-qualify for benefits every two years based on another false assumption that their medical conditions are likely to improve. Trump’s proposal won’t even save taxpayers any money — it’s expected to cost about as much to administer as it will save by denying benefits to the disabled. It is, expected, however, to cause thousands of people to lose benefits simply for not keeping up with the complicated paperwork.

Photo : Shutterstock

Reagan’s version took benefits away from tens of thousands of disabled people who needed them. It was overwhelmingly overturned a few years later. Do we expect this version to work out differently? And why are disabled people today getting stripped of benefits, for no net taxpayer savings at all, while Amazon still pays no taxes? Our economic outlooks are tied to one another. When the poor have money in their pockets, they spend it. That creates jobs and profits businesses. Social safety net programs are also an economic stimulus, in addition to a moral imperative. There are a number of reasons, both altruistic and selfish, to keep our social safety net in place — and none to dismantle it besides cruelty.

• The cybercriminal places calls into the company to determine names of key people in human resources and finance departments • The cybercriminal sets up a fake email address using the real name of the most senior people in the company • The cybercriminal sends email messages to the key people in the human resources and finance departments requesting a list of IRS W-2 filing data that is being prepared for all employees • The human resource or finance department people receive this message, respond to the email, and provide the data as requested The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) recently announced that it received more than 166,000 victim complaints with worldwide losses of over $26 billion to BEC wire transfer schemes from June 2016 through July 2019. A CRUEL ATTACK ON THE DISABLED You might have missed it amid the impeachment coverage, but the Trump administration has recently rolled out plans for draconian cuts to everything from Medicaid to school lunches. Latest on the chopping block? Social Security disability payments. Cuts to the social safety net are often justified for budgetary reasons, but I find that hard to swallow while Amazon is still paying $0 in federal taxes. If the budget is the problem, then the wealthiest corporations should pay their taxes. If the administration won’t see to that, then it’s not about the budget at all — it’s about cruelty. If anything, disability programs aren’t generous enough. I’ve lived my entire adult life with a disability. I had a migraine every day for 23 years. Yet I’m not eligible for either federal disability program — Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Even though I was in severe chronic pain and struggling financially, I was not entirely incapable of work — although holding down a 9-5 job exacerbated my pain. The thing is, there’s no provision for partial disability; if you apply for disability, it is because you cannot work at all. Second, the process for getting disability benefits is notoriously long and grueling. Disabled friends who have done it say you

The IP PIN is a six-digit number that adds a layer of protection to the taxpayers’ Social Security numbers and helps protect against tax-related identity theft. It helps prevent a taxpayer’s SSN from being used on a fraudulent tax return. Taxpayers will be eligible for this voluntary program if they filed a federal tax return last year from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Washington. Taxpayers enter their IP PINs onto their federal tax return when prompted by their electronic provider or their tax professional. Taxpayers must use the correct IP PIN on their tax returns to avoid return rejects or delays. Taxpayers opting into the IP PIN program must use the

online “Get an IP PIN” tool at IRS.gov/IPPIN. Before obtaining an IP PIN, taxpayers must pass a rigorous identity verification process. Not everyone can pass. Taxpayers cannot call the IRS to request an IP PIN. The IRS is working on an alternative for those who cannot authenticate their identities. The IRS has created a new publication – Publication 5367, Identity Protection PIN OptIn Program for Taxpayers – to help taxpayers understand the required steps. The publication is in English and Spanish. Taxpayers should review the publication or the IRS.gov/ IPPIN page to make sure the program is right for them. Taxpayers who opt into the program should be on high alert for phishing attempts by cybercriminals and others to steal their IP PINs. This story has been shortened for length. “Why?” asked the child. “Is God asleep?” Certainly not. Our God, the God Who created heaven and earth - and all that is in it and on it and above it - has promised us in His Word that He is always watching over us, day and night. We must never forget that He is “awake,” watching carefully and waiting patiently to guide and guard us. This One, this all-powerful God, who loved us and gave His Son to redeem us, is always available to meet our every need – every moment of every day! We often forget that God is constantly watching over us and caring deeply for us.

published in 2010. His books and speaking tours offer hope and healing and have inspired and encouraged a generation of fans. The evening also will include a presentation of Black history essay contest winners from local high schools, a performance by Wiley College Acapella Choir, and Grammy-Award winner Howard Hewett who began his career as the male vocal lead in the group Shalamar. As a gift to the community, a Celebration of Black History is being

offered as a no-cost event. However, a seat must be reserved through the Belcher Center box office by visiting the Belcher Center online or by calling 903233-3080. Essay Contest Seeks Redevelopment Ideas for Former Johnny Cace’s Mayor Andy Mack, District 4 Councilwoman Kristen Ishihara, and property owners Drs. Akhuini & Chris Ihionkhan invite you to submit your opinion for the future of 1501 E. Marshall Ave., the former home of Johnny Cace’s Seafood and Steakhouse. Residents are asked to write a short essay answering the question, “What would you like the former Johnny Cace’s site to be?” Highway 80 is a major east-west corridor that runs through the center of the Longview community. The various stretches of Highway 80 see between 15,000 – 30,000 cars per day. For many years, the Johnny Cace’s Seafood and Steakhouse was a significant destination on Highway 80 for meals, family celebrations, anniversaries, proposals,

receptions, and business meetings. The restaurant closed in 2015, and the Cace family later opened “The Cace Kitchen” in a new location at 415 N. High St. The Ihionkhans purchased the Marshall Avenue property in 2019, and they are now seeking input and ideas for redeveloping the site for the future. Residents are encouraged to submit their suggestions in an essay contest. Submissions must be received by Friday, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. The essay contest winner will be announced on Sunday, March 8, and will receive a $250 prize. “The city almost never plays a role in private development, but it’s great that the Ihionkhans want to hear from the community as they consider what to do with this important, historic property on

Highway 80,” Mack said. “Ultimately, it will still be their decision how they want to redevelop the property, but we can’t wait to see the great ideas our residents can come up with.” Essays should be a minimum of 250 words. Essays may be submitted by mail to Mayor Mack’s Office, PO Box 1952, Longview, TX 75606, or by email to Mayor@LongviewTexas.gov. Please include your contact information with the essay submission.

Water lawns and gardens in the morning on hot summer days, so the water isn’t evaporated quickly by the heat. Use a broom to clean off sidewalks instead of hosing them down with water. Use a bucket of water to wash cars and bikes. Use Short bursts of water from the hose to rinse them off.

Longview ISD Place 6 Trustee Ted Beard can be observed advocating for outstanding education for all students. His support for excellent education finds its roots from Beard’s family of origin. While he grew up in Detroit, Michigan his parents impressed on him the crucial importance of science in forming a wellrounded, career-boosting education. They steered him to persons who would be exceptional guides in his trip down the road of higher learning. “My parents introduced me to a woman by the name of Esther Caddel who was a medical researcher and veteran science teacher who developed a project-oriented teaching and study method called SUAM DWYPES, which made the scientific method user-friendly to inner city youth,” he says. Caddell had transformed her home into a science learning workshop that she later relocated to a stand-alone building. This unit was a hands-on learning experience for young scholars seeking to develop their science and math skills. Many of the students she mentored here went on to success in regional and metropolitan Contd. on Page 10

science fairs before moving on to careers as educators. Caddel’s influence was strong and positive in molding Beard’s future. “Since serving on the school board I wanted to ensure that students in the district had the same exposure and opportunity in the science and math fields,” he says. The recent STEAM Fair showcased the expansion of LISD science fair. Going beyond science and math curricula, the district has introduced its STEAM program, emphasizing Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. The recent STEAM Fair showcased Science projects from various campuses. Moreover, parents, relatives and friends of participating students attended for support. “I am excited about the evolvement of the Science Fair in the district. Moreover, I appreciate the dedication and passion from staff and volunteers. I thank them for being consistent STEAM guides for our students while applauding parents and relatives who support their children; our future scientists and leaders,” Beard said.

It can be hard to talk to a family member or friend about making healthy lifestyle changes. Use these tips to start a conversation about hearthealthy changes like quitting smoking or getting more physical activity. Begin by saying that you care. You can say: • “I want you to live a long and healthy life.” • “I hope you’ll be around for a long time.” • “I want to help you make healthy changes so you can keep enjoying the things you love to do.” Share the facts. Let your loved one know how serious heart disease can be: • “Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States.” • “Heart disease causes more deaths in the United States than all types of cancer combined.”

Explain that it’s possible to prevent heart disease. Make it clear that taking these steps can improve heart health: • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke. • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure. • If you choose to drink alcohol, limit your drinking to no more than 1 drink a day for women and no more than 2 drinks a day for men. • Eat healthy. Get plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fatfree or low-fat dairy products. Limit saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and sodium (salt). • Get active. Aim for 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week. • Stay at a healthy weight. If you are overweight or obese, losing just 10 pounds can lower your risk of heart disease.

Offer to help. Ask how you can help: • “What changes are the hardest for you to make? What can I do to support you?” • “How can we get healthy together?” • “You don’t have to do this alone. What can I do to help you?” Try suggesting these ideas: • Go shopping together for hearthealthy foods. Then cook and enjoy a healthy meal. • Get active together. A good way to start is to meet every day for a fast walk. • If your loved one smokes, encourage him to get free help quitting by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). • For more information visit americanheartassociation.org

What does excess weight have to do with diabetes? As is the case with many physical ailments being overweight is a major factor, but there are other aspects to consider. Person’s amount of physical activity, family histories, ethnicity and age must also be taken into account. Too many are under the misconception that weight is the sole cause of type 2 diabetes, but many type 2 sufferers are either only slightly overweight or not overweight at all. Still, dietary habits are significant. Does eating sweets and sugars cause diabetes? Any diet high in calories (including sugar) contributes to weight gain, which is certain to place one at risk for type 2 diabetes.
