hankfully, Isaiah had some comforting words for Little Jeanie. Knowing others would have the same concern, God inspired him to write, “Don’t you know that the Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the earth? He never grows faint or weary!” What encouraging words from the Lord Himself! Here we see Isaiah describing our God’s power to create, His power to sustain what He creates, and His presence to help when we call upon Him. Our God is almighty and all powerful. Yet, with all of His greatness, He cares for each of us individually and our concerns and our cares are never beneath Him or beyond Him. Our God cannot be explained and when we try to describe Him with our finite mind and our limited vocabulary, we only reveal our small, inadequate understanding of His greatness. But this we know: There is no limit to His love and no end to His forgiveness. No problem is too large for Him to solve nor any person too small for Him to recognize. He is not kind one moment and hateful the next.

risten Ishihara is a local attorney-atlaw who pursues her profession and community service with genuine passion. She and husband Richard Ishihara met at Baylor Law School and have been a team ever since. Nowadays, they build their lives not only around each other, but children Brianna, nine, and eight-year-old Lucas. Their dog Teeny, a Blue Heeler, is another Longview resident they assisted--in this case by adopting him from the local Animal Care & Adoption Center. This happy family spends as much time as possible together in the beautiful East Texas outdoors, especially in the city's parks and trails. Still, Kristen's vocational credentials are impressive and of great professional use to the community. As a matter of fact, Kristen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in public law and sociology from Western Michigan University. She graduated from Baylor with a Juris Doctor (JD) and is licensed to practice law in Texas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Equally important, she is an honored member of the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys, and an

accredited Veteran Affairs attorney. "I practice Estate Planning and Elder Law with Ross & Shoalmire, PLLC," she says. "Our firm's services include: Asset Protection, Medicaid Planning, Special Needs Trusts, VA Aid and Attendance, Guardianships, Trusts, Wills, Power of Attorney and Probate." Kristen and Richard moved to Longview in 2006 and began volunteering with the local team for Special Olympics--the East Texas Lightnin'. Via this selfless work, she started using her legal knowledge not only for guardianships and special needs trusts, but to help clients obtain such needed benefits as Social Security Disability, Medicare, and Medicaid. Steering clients through the maze of applying for such benefits is complex and requires someone with her extensive knowledge and caring heart. "These benefits are important to disabled athletes as they turn 18, like my Special Olympics athletes," she says. "Also, too many seniors as they age and require long-term care." The complexities of obtaining such government assistance include establishing Financial Power

Persons who require any kind of long-term care fear the financial requirements such attention will entail. Many worry they will lose their homes if they must enter a skilled nursing facility. Hence, Kristen guides them through the legal/financial complexities that accompany growing old in America. "The very best part of my job is being able to help individuals and families get the medical care they need while protecting a spouse and family at the same time," she says. Once a person reaches age 65, they have a 70% chance of needing some sort of longterm care. There are important documents to make sure that each person has in place, including: (1) Financial Power of Attorney (2) Medical Power of Attorney (3) HIPAA (healthcare)authorization (4) Directive to Physicians and (5) Last Will & Testament.
On the other hand, Kristen does not limit her expertise and service to legal matters. She is a founding member of PAWS, the non-profit that supports the Longview Care & Adoption Center. In the same fashion, she is a founding member of the East Texas Alzheimer's Alliance, working to present its Longview Wine Festival as it strives to finance local support for families impacted by this heartbreaking disease and other types of dementia. Furthermore, she has served on the City Council of Longview District 4 as a representative since 2014. She has just started her third and final term in this vital position. "It has been an honor to serve the community in this position," she says. "I have truly enjoyed helping to move Longview forward and solve issues facing our residents." t’s no surprise that the pandemic has affected the economy as unemployment rates continue to soar and economic output has plunged these past few months. As a result, the U.S. has officially gone into recession, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). Better Business Bureau serving Central East Texas (BBB) advises consumers to work toward becoming fiscally savvy during this uncertain season. Better Business Bureau provides the following financial tips to survive the COVID-19 recession: Pay down debt. A high revolving credit balance not only hurts your credit, it could cause additional stress in an environment where many are losing their jobs. Prioritize credit card debt, then focus on your other loans. If you have student loan debt, you may be eligible for deferment during the current crisis. Save as much as you can. The recommended best practice is to build up your savings account to have at least three to six months of income to carry you through unexpected rough financial patches. Cut back on non-essential expenses. Making sure to keep the lights on is more important than catching the latest episode of a show. Separating wants and needs is crucial to determine a budget which works.

Canceling less used streaming services, eating at home more often and cutting other unnecessary costs can go a long way in saving money. Look for additional income. Take advantage of supplemental income opportunities in your area to build cash reserves. Jobs which offer minimal contact, such as delivering meals or groceries could be great opportunities to make extra cash. You might even be able to turn that hobby you love into an income-generating side hustle. File for unemployment. If you were to be affected by layoffs or furloughs due to the pandemic, see if you qualify for unemployment benefits. Although it may not equate to your normal income, a little bit of help goes a long way. For more information on filing for unemployment benefits, visit the Texas Workforce Commission website. Seek professional advice. Expert advice can provide valuable knowledge for your personal finances. Consider making an appointment with your personal bank for resources on financial planning. Some financial advisors and firms may provide free advice. For more information on how to be a savvy consumer, go to bbb.org. As outgoing Zonta Longview President Lyndell McAllister turned the reins over to new President Amy Hooten, she commented on the accomplishments of her now-ending presidency, such as the, "opportunity to work with and learn from a committed group of women whose goal is to empower women through service and advocacy both locally and globally." “I am proud to have led our ZONTA Club of Longview as we have disbursed four $1000 to deserving young women and given grants funds to two very deserving organizations,” said McAllister. “I have attended a Zonta District 10 meeting with Amy Hooten, president Elect where we learned

about international programs to end child marriage and expand access to education, the learning and growth opportunities have been very enlightening.” Her words spoke volumes as she pointed out the goals and accomplishments of Zonta in making this world a better place for women and children. "We learned about international programs to end child marriage and expand access to education," she said. "The learning and growth opportunities have been very enlightening." McAllister concluded with a splendid description of Zonta. "A dynamic group of women who meet monthly to work on causes locally and internationally to stop violence against women and promote resilience for women here and now," she said. "To me it is one of the few opportunities that has women and children as their main focus."

factors to consider
H
ome ownership is a dream for many people. In fact, buying a home is considered by many people to be a major life accomplishment. 1: Property taxes Property taxes can greatly affect the overall cost of living in a particular home. Property taxes are levied by each county and often include taxes paid to schools, utility companies and municipal governments. It will usually be factored into a monthly mortgage payment, and how high (or low) taxes are can turn an affordable mortgage payment into something that can break a budget. When calculating payments, be sure to include property taxes in your estimates. 2: Job security/availability The financial resource Fortune Builder says to consider your job security before taking the home ownership plunge. Before committing to an investment as substantial as a home,
ensure that you are secure in your job. 3: Local schools For potential homeowners with children or those planning on becoming parents, area schools should merit significant consideration. Research school rankings and reviews but know that rankings can change. 4: Commute times Calculate the time it will take to travel to and from work when considering a certain town or neighborhood. 5: Lifestyle options Quality nightlife, arts and history, community events, proximity to cultural centers or cities, and other factors are at play in choosing a home. Make sure your new community allows you to still enjoy the things you are passionate about. Buying a home involves considering various factors that can affect your budget and quality of life.
Tips for grilling

H
amburgers are a staple at backyard barbecues. Though burgers are a relatively simple food, mastering the technique to grill burgers is no small feat, as there is more to great grilled burgers than simply firing up the grill and dropping down a patty.

percentage of fat. The fat-to-lean meat ratio should be around 20 percent fat to 80 percent meat. Spend a little more to get freshly ground meat that has not been previously frozen. Don’t overwork the burgers with a lot of handling. This will warm up the fat in the burger, which causes it to emulsify and could make the meat rubbery. Reconsider adding a lot of herbs, spices or addins to the burgers, as such items can detract
from the flavor of the meat. Extra herbs and spices also may require extra mixing, which can lead overhandling. Push a dimple into the top of the burger, which will help prevent the burger from expanding upward and out while cooking and rounding out in the process. The dimple will keep the top of the burger flat, which facilitates easy topping. Make sure the grill is hot. Burgers do well with high heat and will cook relatively quickly. Resist the urge to push down on the patty with your spatula. This will cause the juices to spill out and may result in a dry, tough burger. Let burgers rest before serving. This lets the juices redistribute throughout and makes for a moist and tasty first bite.

ETBU celebrates Spring 2020 Class “in-person,” “virtual” commencement
ETBU President J. Blair Blackburn presents Hanna Perry with the Spring 2020 President’s Award. ast Texas Baptist University held its Spring 2020 Commencement ceremonies last month. ETBU President J. Blair Blackburn presided over the socially distanced ceremonies as 173 students received undergraduate degrees and 20 earned graduate degrees, for a total of 193 graduates. Students were allowed to choose their participation style either “in-person” or “virtual” at the celebratory worship services. ETBU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Thomas Sanders, along with the University Deans, donned their academic regalia in honor of the graduates and their achievements. “Commencement is a special time in the life of a

University,” Dr. Sanders said. “It is a time for celebration for both the University and the families to join together with pride in celebration of the accomplishments of these students. Each student’s hard work, under the guidance and support of faculty members, staff, family members, and friends has resulted in the accomplishments we recognize today.” The Honorable Bryan Hughes, Texas State Senator for District 1, gave the charge to graduates during both ceremonies. “Graduates, the degree you’re receiving, regardless of your major, has been structured around you as a person,” Senator Hughes said. “Normally at graduations, all of the graduates are sitting together, while their families and friends are spread out |

throughout the room. This year, it’s unique to have graduates sitting with their families, their friends, with the ones who supported them, prayed for them, who sacrificed for them to get here. This has been structured around you.” During his address, he inspired graduates to dream big as they go forth to serve in their respective vocations and point people to Christ. “East Texas Baptist University was incredibly grateful to welcome graduates and their families back to the Hill for this day of celebration as we worshiped the Lord and recognized their successes and accomplishments,” Dr. Blackburn said. “Regardless of what happened the last semester of their final year at ETBU, God has a plan and purpose for their life as graduates. We have heritages among our campus that help and shape each of us into whose we are and who we are to be in Christ. We praise God as He has developed ETBU into a mosaic quilt. With people that represent the communities and cultures of our East Texas Region and across the world, we are grateful for all of the students, and especially our Spring 2020 graduates, who God called to be part of this University.” Each semester, ETBU President Blackburn presents an award to a graduate who represents a Christian leader, scholar, and servant within the campus and local community. Hanna Perry, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Biology, received the President’s Award for the Spring 2020 graduating class. Off campus, Perry has been actively engaged at Immanuel Baptist Church, where she served as a Pre-K volunteer, is a member of an IBC covenant group, and a member of the college leadership team. Additionally, she volunteered at Sam Houston Elementary School as well as Dayspring Therapeutic Equine Center. Perry will soon begin Law School at Baylor University, where she received a full-tuition scholarship for her studies. “Hanna is a faithful prayer warrior,” Assistant Professor of Chemistry Dr. Scott Morris said. “It is evident to everyone she meets that the Holy Spirit is active in her life. Her spiritual maturity both encourages and challenges me as I serve as a ministry leader in her
Education life. I am certain that her Christian walk is not limited to this collegiate experience, as she is demonstrating incredible spiritual maturity in that she is prayerfully considering ways to fulfill the Great Commission in her future endeavors, be it at law school or beyond.” Furthermore, Dr. Warren Johnson, a Professor of Christian Ministry since 2005, was recognized as a Professor with Distinction for his excellence in service, scholarship, teaching, and integration of faith and learning. Dr. Johnson teaches courses in New Testament studies and in Koine (New Testament) Greek. America is groaning for an awakening, revival, healing, and restoration," Dr. Blackburn shared. "It is only through Christ’s love and through the Gospel that this can be possible. Our University reflects Christ’s calling for us to be a light on the Hill, a city on the Hill which cannot be hidden. I pray that each of us will have the character, the courage, and the compassion to shine Jesus’ light and love so that America’s people can live in peace and unity.” A student, who nominated Dr. Johnson, said “I have had Dr. Johnson for at least one class every semester I have been at ETBU, and that has been on purpose. His classes have consistently been nourishing to the mind and the soul. His teaching style makes the information accessible, yet he maintains an academic rigor that is admirable. Lastly, he has consistently integrated his own faith into his curriculum, and has provided opportunities for students to engage in the material spiritually.” Spring 2020 Commencement was originally scheduled for May 9, but after adjustments in the wake of the coronavirus, the University remained committed to celebrating the 2020 graduating class of ETBU by rescheduling the event for a later date under national and state and health and safety guidelines. Graduates were able to dress in their cap and gown and crossed the stage with pomp and circumstance to celebrate this hard-earned milestone achievement.

I can help my clients be prepared for unexpected events in their lives including auto, home, business, supplemental insurance and so much more. "However, the single most important product I have to offer my East Texas clients is life insurance. -Olivia Secord-Giddings She has seen her conviction about the importance of insurance tragically confirmed as her mother, brother-inlaw and nephew have all been diagnosed with cancer. Throwing herself totally into her calling to help others, she expanded her work from concentrating on life and supplemental insurance to include property and casualty insurance. She now assists her customers with ALL their insurance needs. "I can help them be prepared for unexpected events in their lives including auto, home, business, supplemental insurance and so much more," she says. "However, the single most important product I have to offer my East Texas clients is life insurance." Of course, Ms. Secord-Giddings cares about her clients, and not just concerning their insurance needs. She sees and treats her clients as family. And, as is often the case when dealing with family members, she knows what it is like to get knocked down and have to overcome obstacles. "My clients are my family," she says. "A lot of times that means going out of my way to make their lives just a little easier." Even though Olivia attributes her success to persistent hustle, she is quick

to credit God’s grace for the strength and energy to hustle. As a matter of fact, her faith is central to everything she does. Hence, she thanks Jesus Christ for instilling in her, the realization that insurance is a great way to help those around her and giving her the ability to be successful doing it. Her integrity, ability and trustworthiness are Godgiven gifts; using these gifts, through her, the Creator blesses her clients. "The most amazing part about being an insurance agent, is helping my community and fellow East Texans protect their families, homes and assets which they have worked so hard for," she says. Equally important, Ms. SecordGiddings final objective is to alter the face of insurance throughout East Texas where it primarily becomes a community service institution rather than a solitary money-making industry. She hopes this transformation will spread far beyond east Texas Pineywoods. To contact Olivia Secord-Giddings, please call 903.230.8330 or email her at osecord@farmersagent.com. "My parents taught me most of all, that my faith in Jesus Christ is the most important thing in my life. I am grateful for the strong faith they passed on to me." -Olivia Secord-Giddings Olivia and Michael Giddings
Ms. Secord-Giddings has an extensive history of altruism. During her college years, she worked in soup kitchens, prison ministries, and with a Child Advocacy Center. Currently, she sits on the board of Longview Community Ministries, works with the Food Box, is a member of the Henderson Rotary Club plus vice-president of the Longview Too Ambucs Club. Olivia and her five children eagerly dove into organizing and participating in the annual Santaland run/walk. Her community service has not gone unnoticed. In 2019, she was named Ambucs of the Year.

"When I leave this world, I want to have changed it for the better somehow," she says. "I love Longview and have the pleasure of participating in the Leadership Longview program as vice-facilitator chair." A native of Findlay, Ohio, Olivia, lived briefly in Emory, Texas before returning to Ohio. She attended college in Springfield, Missouri. After graduating she gravitated back to what would become her lifelong home...Texas. "My parents taught me most of all, that my faith in Jesus Christ is the most important thing in my life," she says. "I

am grateful for the strong faith they passed on to me. I finally made it back to Texas in July 2011." She majored in criminal justice at Evangel University in Missouri, graduating with a Bachelor of Science with a minor in Bible Studies. Returning to Ohio, she went to work as an investigator for Children’s' Services. However, after she married and started a family, she took a few years off from her career and became a stay-at-home mom. Then, came the move to Texas. On arrival, she took a job at Gilmer Elementary School, which her children attended.
Ms. Secord-Giddings second stint was in liquid gold-Oil. After moving on to the East Texas petroleum industry, she had to make a change when the oil business crashed in 2015. She took a dive into the world of insurance. "I moved into the insurance world for two reasons," she says. "I wanted to own my own business, and, secondly, I realized how important it was that I help other people to be prepared for unexpected events in their lives." The year 2020 besides the numbers, has been an unusual year for everyone (think COVID-19). For Ms. Secord-Giddings, it has become a super extraordinary years.

livia Secord- Giddings is a happy newlywed. This Spring bride and husband Michael Giddings tied the knot in February. Along with their children Cole Secord, Connor Secord, Calleigh Secord, Jaden Giddings and Jayla Giddings they make for a contented, loving, blended family. Olivia and Michael had a true on-thejob romance. "Michael and I met while working for a local oilfield supply company," she says. "We became good friends until one day we realized we had fallen in love." Both came from failed marriages, and now the way they support, love and believe in each other as best friends as well as spouses and business partners is a testament to how the American Dream can come true even for those who are forced to start over.

This seven-member family is an all-around success story in all its adventures. They enjoy each other and live life to the fullest as a team travelling together, working out together, running as a group, and most important of all serving others. "We enjoy running and working out," she says. "I have always made this a part of mine and my children’s lives. It is my goal to teach them life-long, healthy habits." Sons Cole, Connor and Jaden are on the track team at Spring Hill High School as they follow their parents' encouragement to live long, prosper and to not only know what is right and what is wrong, but to realize the consequences of bad decisions. Olivia and Michael are making sure their children are aware that following God's will is a sure route to Godly success. She is also a great example on how to be a blessing to others.

Cleaning Guidelines aturally, engagement rings and bridal bands are the shining stars of the celebration. Bridal jewelry is an investment worth maintaining. Considering several thousands of dollars may adorn the necks, fingers, ears, and wrists of bridal party members, individuals should learn how to keep their jewelry investments looking pristine.
Protect jewelry by cleaning it regularly and exercising caution when engaging in certain activities.
Remove jewelry during hard work AND Use caution with beauty products.
Beware the sun, too. The Gemological Institute of America, Inc. states that sunlight can affect the durability and color of colored gemstones. Over time and in excess, the sun and heat can fade or damage some stones, such as amethyst, topaz and pearls. Other stones can darken with exposure to the sun.
Be careful around swimming pools, spas and the ocean Couples should remove jewelry before partaking in water-based activities on their honeymoons.
Inspect and know your jewelry Routinely inspect jewelry to test for any structural issues that can result in breakage or lost stones. Exercise caution when wearing pieces and clean and care for them properly.

ou have planned the date, met with the officiant, decided on what to wear, and booked the venue. But how are you going to arrive in style? While rented transportation is not necessary, it is a luxury many couples prefer, as it allows them to leave the driving to someone else. Generally speaking, hired cars will pick up the bride and groom separately before the ceremony. The transportation will then take the married couple and typically members of the bridal party and immediate family to the reception venue. Couples can start the process by asking their reception venue for transportation recommendations. Or if there are hotel accommodations after the party, the hotel may have connections or offer shuttle services.
