ancellations, Cancellations, Cancellations. This is now a familiar word with us whether it is a business meeting or a community event. The COVID-19 virus death toll virus continues to rise. By ip magazine press time, more than 400,000,000 of our fellow Americans have succumbed to the virus and more than 1000 will continue to die every day. The recent uptick is blamed on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Furthermore, hospitalizations and death toll continue to rise even in our own community prompting the Chamber of Commerce to cancel its annual State of the City event. More troubling for us humans is that we are created for community hence, we want to be with our love ones as they pass on to the other side. In this unprecedented era, oftentimes, they passed on alone. This leaves many without any form of closure. Nonetheless, with prayers and vaccine, this too shall pass. We will eventually pick up all our losses and march on, finishing our own races. Meanwhile, let us continue to pray for the Father’s comfort for all who have lost friends and loved ones. Moreover, let us approach our Father’s throne of grace, and pray for healing for anyone who is sick among us. On a positive note, we brought you the CHOICES opinion piece penned by our own Mayor Andy Mack from page 8. Are you keeping up with UT Tyler and UT Health meager? Check out the new leaders who are bringing their expertise to the east Texas region from page 12. But that is not all. There is more. Please read the amazing story of John Nustad, the family man who calls Longview, Texas. His story is from page 15. In addition, many kudos to Longview Museum of Fine Arts (LMFA) Executive Director and Museum Curator, Tiffany Jehorek and her team. They pulled off a successful “Permanent Collection from the Vault,” Art show. This piece is from page 3. Please, do not miss the Chocolate Ganache recipe on page 23. Afterall. it is lover’s month.

Cover Story Despite all the fine, human examples from his past that he follows to this day, his main influence is his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He aims to show his faith through his actions on behalf of others, and for this, the Son of God is the ultimate example. "To me, one cannot learn about the life of Jesus Christ in the context of the time period it was written [in] and not realize that it transcends our limited understanding," he says. "Jesus Christ as the greatest role model left no room for anyone to surpass His example, but for followers to strive to achieve it. Jesus said the two greatest commandments: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Mathew 22:36-40.

‘LIVE AND LET LIVE’ Dear Longview, What a year 2020 has been! I have heard many people use that expression with a sense of negativity. Admittedly, this has been a strange and interesting year, but in spite of all the changes, came many blessings as well. Let’s not lose sight of that. This time last year you were probably making big plans for the year with goals and resolutions. I was too. We really didn’t have a clue of what was awaiting us in March 2020. All of those goals and ideals were quickly turned on their head as priorities were shifted due to COVID 19. I’m curious – had you known that COVID-19 was around the bend, would your goals and priorities have been different in January 2020? In my case, had I known how COVID-19 would be impacting us in early March, there are some definite things I would have done differently. Of course, at my surgery practice I would have made some modifications with our patient rooms and scheduling. As for my personal life, I would have valued those times I went out to eat (I have not dined out at a restaurant since March 9, 2020) with my friends and family. I also would have savored so many social outings and seeing people’s smiles which are now covered up by masks. In spite of all that has been thrown at us, I am thankful for many things this year. I have enjoyed a slower pace of life – as I am sure have many of you. I know that we miss all the social gatherings and parties – but those will be happening again soon enough. I have enjoyed much more intentional time with my family. There is something to be said for family time when there are so many unknowns in the world. It has really made me think about how blessed we are for every moment together. All in all, as I look back there is a lot to be gained from this experience that this generation can say we went through that no generation has been through since the polio outbreak. That generation survived and essentially eradicated the polio virus and I am sure we will do the same with the

Coronavirus given time. One of the things I have been most surprised about, though, is the attitude of some people who are critical of others because of the choices that they make. There have been a lot of instances throughout this Pandemic where it has been left up to the individual to choose. Some have chosen to wear masks. Others have not. Some have chosen to stay at home and limit social gatherings. Others have not. Some have chosen to wash their hands. Others have not. Some have chosen to follow the rules and guidelines set forth by the Governor of Texas with their businesses. Others

have not. And some will choose to take the vaccine as it is offered. Others will not. Regardless, each individual has choices to make in life. As such, there are consequences. Not just with COVID-19, but with everything we do and we say. That is really where I want to focus the rest of this column. More importantly, not the consequences of your actions, but your reaction to others’ choices. Are you tolerant of others? Do you allow others to make decisions on their own without criticizing? Do you feel you are always right and there is no room for discussion? These are questions that have gone

www.facebook.com/InfinitiePlusmagazine

through my mind since this Pandemic has started and have caused me to reflect inward. I have learned through this ordeal the phrase “Live and Let Live” provides a lot of peace to me. When I do not adopt this philosophy in my life, I find that I am more judgmental of others’ actions without knowing all the facts. A phrase my Dad drilled into us as children was “Don’t judge a man until you have walked in his shoes”. Think and reflect on that sentence. It is really not our job to criticize the personal decisions that others make. I feel that social media has made it so much easier now to be judge and jury of others. Of course when you compare your behind the scenes story to someone else’s highlight reel it never is a fair game. I am learning at my age that it is better for me to make the decisions that I think are best for me and my family and to trust that others are doing the same. If I do not feel comfortable going out and about, I stay at home. If I feel like going out and about, I go out and about. This is true whether during times of COVID or not, right? It’s one of the blessings about living in America. So let’s suffice it to say – learn tolerance. The younger you learn it, the more benefit you will receive from it. Another phrase my Dad said to my brothers and I our entire life was “Do not burn a bridge that you will have to walk over again someday.” That pretty well sums it up. And next month, we will talk about New Year’s Resolutions. Study hard, have some fun and say your Mayor Andy Mack prayers, Andy

he new year is underway and many of us have a moneyrelated resolution. If you are in debt, you’re not alone. Total American household debt is only rising. According to the US Federal Reserve’s Center for Microeconomic Data, total household debt increased by $87 billion in the third quarter of 2020. Although getting out of debt, especially credit card debt, may seem daunting, it can start you on the road to financial freedom and wealth creation. There is an incredible amount of uncertainty in today’s environment. That’s why many of us are being extra mindful about how we spend and save in 2021. If you want to get your finances in order in 2021 and stick to your New Year’s Resolution, BBB provides the following advice:

can waste a lot of money over time. See if you can transfer your balances to something with a lower rate, but remember to do your research on BBB. org first, as consumers nationwide filed more than 11,000 complaints against credit card companies in 2020. Make sure to read the terms and contract very carefully – there may be big penalties if you miss a payment. If you have multiple cards, decide which debt-paying strategy is best for you. Some experts recommend paying off cards with the highest interest rates first - others recommend paying off cards with the smallest balances first – figure out what works best for you.

UNETHICAL BUSINESSES

Don’t waste money on unethical businesses or scams. When making a purchase or choosing a business, always check with BBB. Making careful decisions now can save you time, money, and headaches later. Research all companies at BBB.org, and check BBB Scam Tracker regularly to see which scams are happening in your area.

CREDIT CARDS

Take a closer look at your credit cards. Credit cards are known for their high interest rates. This

FREE MONEY TOOLS

Take advantage of free tools. There are many online tools that can help you manage and reduce your debt. A great place to start is the free and easy-to-use BBB debt solution tool to find options for managing your debt.

START BUDGETING

Start budgeting. Creating a written budget and tracking your spending is one of the best ways to save money and stop spending more than you earn! First, figure out how much debt you have; you need an accurate picture before you can figure out your budget. Note the difference between fixed expenses, needs, and wants. If you have debt, include repayment goals in your budget. If you can, try to factor in retirement and emergency savings as well.

SAVE MONEY, ALTERNATE INCOME

Save money by cooking at home instead of getting takeout. Factor in any alternate income that you can think of, like selling unused items or part-time work. JOHN NUSTAD:

FAMILY MAN SETTLES IN LONGVIEW, TEXAS By JOYCELYNE FADOJUTIMI WWW.IPLUSMAG.COM

I

t started locally on New Year's Eve 2007 when John Nustad and wife-to-be Katy met at a Longview establishment called Graham's Central Station (now re-named Electric Cowboy) and felt the chemistry flowing between them. Katy had grown up on a dairy farm in nearby Daingerfield and was working on her master’s degree in health administration from Texas A&M. John meanwhile, was embarking for the University of Texas at Arlington to pursue a bachelor's degree in business administration. "We stayed in touch long-distance until finally dating almost two years later," he says. "We've now been married eight years and have two beautiful children, Vivienne, five, and Talon, not quite three." Their marriage started out in nomadic fashion as they lived in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Ann Arbor, Michigan and Bossier City, Louisiana. He credits Katy's tireless work ethic for their success. For him, positive family influence is nothing new. His mother fled an abusive marriage to set an example that motivates him still. As a single mother with two little boys to support, she never wavered in her determination to succeed on her own. "When I was a teenager, I asked my mom why we never received food stamps or free school lunch program," he says. "She told me she didn't want to depend on the government, or for our peers at school to know we were poor."

Her pride, hard work and determination set a standard John still clings to as he fruitfully follows her example. His mother also achieved success in ways other than financial. He was eight years old when she met "the second greatest influence in my life," her second husband, Robert Self. He was a true husband and father. "A blue-collar worker, he loved us as his own, taught us how a man is supposed to act and, most importantly, treat women," he says. "His loyalty, strong work ethic and push for our education are the top qualities he instilled in us." His family's positive impact on his upbringing goes yet further as he credits his late maternal grandmother for steering him onto the straight and narrow as it pertains to his interactions with others. "She was a stickler for manners and treating everyone with respect," John says. "She indicated the importance of ‘getting your house in order first.' She praised us publicly and disciplined us in private." All his familial direction took him successfully down the path of education as he graduated from Gilmer High School in 2003, pulled down an associate degree in general studies from Kilgore College in 2006, and his bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2009. Still, for him obtaining

higher education did not come easily as Kilgore College declined to give him a Pell Grant because he "made too much money." Realizing he was being unfairly, absurdly penalized essentially for working too hard, he again followed his mother's example, putting in sixty hours per week and paying his tuition entirely out of his own pocket both at Kilgore College and the University of Texas at Arlington. "When I graduated in 2009, during the recession, my peers were having trouble finding jobs and [were] saddled with high student loan debts while I was already earning significantly more than the average college graduate, had a few years of management experience, and immediately received a promotion," he says. "I've had my Series 6, 63 and insurance licenses, but let them lapse because I'm no longer working directly in wealth management." He presently works as a mortgage loan originator with Good Mortgage. With a decade of experience in the banking, finance and lending business, he excels in commercial lending, branch management, and serving as a banker and teller. His degree in business management prepared him for three years in management, but he realized his true calling is to directly help his customers. He loves customer facing and doing it as part of a team. John Nustad

Ganache Makes 1 1/2 cups 8 ounces semisweet or bittersweet chocolate

Comedian Comedian Billy Crystal with with aa ‘Mark Twain’ trophy

Coarsely chop the chocolate and place in a heat-proof bowl. Bring cream just to a boil over medium-high heat. Pour over the chocolate, and add salt. Let stand for 10 minutes (don’t stir, doing so will cool the ganache too quickly, making it grainy). Stir with a whisk until smooth and shiny to break up any pieces and emulsify the cream and chocolate. Chocolate will often settle on the bottom or sides of the bowl. Scrape the dish with a rubber spatula to incorporate all of it. To make a whipped filling or frosting with the ganache, let it cool to room temperature, stirring often, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Beat the ganache with a mixer on mediumhigh speed until paler and fluffy, 2 to 4 minutes. This will yield about 2 cups. Use it as a filling or spread it over cakes.

1 cup heavy cream
