ow, it is already May. It seems the older we get; the more it feels like time is flying away. We tend to ask, “Where did time go.” Hopefully we are being very useful and emulating citizens like Dr. Jay Gordon- a trailblazer. But here is the beautiful thing- Dr Gordon is so simple that he wants no accolades-non what so ever. Yet, he is one of the best in his field of surgery. Recently, he was honored with Dr. Sam Mack Lifetime Achievement Award. Read about Dr. Gordon from page 6. But wait, the CASA gala was a show stopper. They have gone global from Kenya, Egypt, India, Ireland, Spain, to Tahiti; USA of course, to Donna Blalock-Habinc and her tail feathers from Brazil with her dance partner Steven Lois. Steven thanks for all that you do for CASA. You danced with 2 teams: Brazil and Kenya and both won 3rd place. Thanks, and God bless you always!!! The show has no equal in East Texas. So, if you missed this year, make sure you attend this semi-Hollywood performance and dance with much to eat, drink and friends to see. Read and feast the eyes on the pictures of CASA’s great evening. Thanks to all participants for a job well done for the sake of children. The story is from page 14. Longview ISD Foundation
continues to work for excellence. This year’s Lamplighter was no different. At the Lamplighters event, student’s essays as to why they chose a particular teacher remains the main stay. The event is not for the faint hearted. Emotions range from surprise, shock to outright teary eyes. The story is from page 21. It is already May and Mother’s Day is ahead of us. We brought you a great recipe for that special female in your life. It can be a – Mother, Spouse, Daughter, Aunt, or Friend. Make it a special day for her by adding this recipe to the sleuth of things you plan for Mother’s Day. Thanks for giving us the opportunity to serve through this medium.

Dr. Jay Gordon Receives Dr. Sam Mack Lifetime Achievement Award
By
J oycelyne
A
s soon as he entered his teens, Jay Gordon sensed his calling-dentistry. After graduating from Stephen F. Austin University in 1971 he moved on to the University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston and commenced four years of training. He honed his new skills as a General Practice Resident in the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Houston before advancing to an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center, again in Houston. By 1980 he had completed his oral surgery residency and hurried to East Texas. Gordon grew up in Dallas, where he played baseball and football as a member of W.T. White High School’s first graduating class. Upon completion of his extensive education he settled first in Nacogdoches. After his 1977 marriage to Campbell Reese he met Dr. Sam Mack and moved to Longview and set up his own private practice.

COVER STORY
Honored for Excellence: From 1980 to 1982, he worked with Dr. Errol DeRouen and earned his board certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 1984 after which he commenced introducing advanced medical techniques to Longview patients. This included repair and reconstruction of upper and lower jaws without wiring the teeth together and controlling patient pain and anxiety via intravenous sedation. He worked with both Good Shepherd Medical Center and Longview Regional Medical Center. He also admitted two friends to his practice. Dr. David Haverkom joined him in 1984, and Dr. Andy Mack came on board in 1989. They formed the East Texas Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates. Gordon spent 33 years fixing smiles before retiring in 2013. However, he kept up his healing service as a volunteer until 2017, working with the Longview Emergency Dental Organization. In 2013, he went to Ethiopia on a medical/dental trip sponsored by Buckner International. Gordon is a Diamond Sponsor of the Hinds Academy Foundation in support of the University of Texas Houston Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program. At the recent luncheon when he received the Sam Mack Lifetime Achievement Award there were several who www.facebook.com/InfinitiePlusmagazine
spoke glowingly of Gordon’s accomplishments in the field of dental health. Reverend Mary Collier described how much she cherished her friendship with Gordon, and how vital his hospital and “home visits” were to her husband Pat Collier following his cancer diagnosis. “Jay saw our terror and coached Pat through the ordeal,” she said. “He even sat with me in the lobby of his own office as Dr. Mack extracted his (Pat’s) teeth.” Gordon himself remarked how this was the only time he ever sat in the lobby of his own office, while Mack said, “If I knew you were out there in the lobby, I would have had you back there helping me. He also said Gordon is “a natural helper” who “Sees the good in everyone and whose sense of humor gives comfort and ease to all around him,” and that he is “a servant leader able to love unconditionally.” Retired orthodontist Dr. Carroll Sherman talked about how Gordon’s arrival in Longview a blessing for patients was because it allowed them to get sorely needed treatment here instead of having to travel long distances. “Prior to that time, my partner Dr. Lynn Duren and I had been sending those specialized cases to very competent oral surgeons in |

Ft. Worth,” he said. “It was great for our patients to be able to stay home in Longview.” Dr. Chris Mack praised Gordon for his lack of arrogance, and how he never let his ego in any way jeopardize his patients’ well-being but would confer with all colleagues regardless of their background. “His training was way more formal than my dad’s training, but nevertheless he would often discuss cases and sometimes operate on patients with my dad,” he said. “The respect he showed for my dad was something our family will never forget.” Mack also extolled Gordon’s devotion and consideration for those close to him. “Later in my dad’s life, his health deteriorated both physically and mentally,” he said. “Jay continued to visit him and stay in contact with him, and this meant a lot to our family.” Dr. Andy Mack also emphasized Gordon’s humanity, and how he went much further than just physically treating his patients. “I learned a lot from Jay in multiple areas--surgery of course, and he’s a talented surgeon, but I also learned how to treat people, and that is something you cannot learn from a book or in a classroom,” he said. “The things I learned from Jay will never leave me. He’s been the most wonderful mentor, partner and friend.”

COVER STORY Achievement Award, and would like to thank all the dentists, orthodontists, physicians, nurses and hospital personnel who collaborated with us in caring for our patients, and even allowed us to provide oral surgery care for themselves and their families,” he said.
About Dr. Sam Mack Award:
Anyone who met Dr. Sam Mack could see right off what he was all about...God, family, friends and the Longview Chamber of Commerce. He was passionate about all of them, and his service to his city and those in it were a testament to his loving heart. Just being around
him made others want to pitch in and help. He saw to it that the city’s medical and dental caregivers were Chamber members as he signed up multitudes for this essential public service. It all started when the local, late restaurateur Johnny Cace telephoned Marion, Dr. Sam Mack’s wife and made a pitch for their Chamber membership and service. Between him and her they succeeded in getting Sam Mack to get involved with the Chamber and the results were amazing, thanks to the Dr. Sam Mack’s dedication to the affairs of the Chamber. Consequently, the Longview Chamber has created the Sam
Mack Lifetime Achievement Award to annually recognize the city’s finest medical professionals. This award is a testament to Dr. Sam Mack’s personal mission of work and service to his community and0 motivates others to follow his sparkling example. Mack’s sons Chris, Andy and Ben yearly research Longview’s most dedicated, skilled health providers. These professionals have established themselves as the most talented, compassionate and caring healers and serve the city and its people in tandem. Without his example, there would have been no towering inspiration to generate such recognition.
Dr. Chris Johnson, Dr. Jay Gordon and Mayor Andy Mack.
Gordon’s ministrations are not limited to the dental chair. He is an active member of First United Methodist Church, and volunteers with the visiting Care Team, Meals on Wheels and on youth mission trips. He also donates his time to Longview Ambucs, Asbury House Child Enrichment Center, Preservation Longview, Historic Longview
Farmers’ Market, Family Promise, and Beds of Hope. He even finds time to serve as a life sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, and has spent almost 40 years as a volunteer for Gregg County D.U. His love of the outdoors is another of his passions as he spends time hunting with good friends. In retirement, he and Ellen love living on the shores of
Lake Cherokee and traveling, but their pride and joy are their two adult children--daughter Leah, married to Dr. Andrew Philley of Tyler, and son Reese Gordon of Houston. They now have two “brightest joys” in grandsons Luke and Jack Philley, aged five and three. “I am sincerely honored to receive the Sam Mack Lifetime Family: Ellen Gordon, Dr. Jay Gordon, son Reese Gordon, daughter Leah Gordon Philley, grandson Luke Philley, son-in-law Dr. Andrew Philley

CELEBRATION
s a e d i y a D s ' r e h t o M for moms from all walks of life M other’s Day is a celebration of women who devote so much of their effort and energy to their families. Celebrating Mom on Mother’s Day lets her know all of her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Mothers may perform similar tasks, but no two moms are the same. Finding ways to celebrate Mom’s uniqueness can make the day that much more meaningful and memorable.
The Crafter
Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craftthemed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.
The Reader
A 2017 survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found
12
that women read more than men. Women read an average of 19.8 minutes per day, which can make a Mother’s Day focused on Mom’s love of books an ideal and unique way to spend the day. Kids can write Mom their own books, and Dad can help put them together. Dads can visit rare bookstores and look for original copies of Mom’s favorite books that she might not find elsewhere.
The Nature Lover
Fishing and other outdoor activities might have a reputation as predominantly male hobbies, but studies show that’s not really the case. A 2016 report from the Outdoor Foundation found that 46 percent of people who participated in outdoor activities were women. If Mom is a nature enthusiast, families can plan a Mother’s Day enjoying the great

outdoors, even giving Mom a new fishing pole, hiking gear or other items that align with her favorite nature activity.
www.iplusmag.com
The Relaxation Specialist
Of course, some mothers may want to simply unwind with a relaxing morning at the spa on Mother’s Day. In fact, the 2018 U.S. Spa Industry Study found that the spa industry has enjoyed seven consecutive years of consistent growth, with more than 187 billion spa visits in 2017 alone. A relaxing morning at the spa can be the perfect way for moms to begin Mother’s Day before they enjoy a brunch of dinner out with their families. Mother’s Day celebrations can be as unique as the women being celebrated.
Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers everywhere!

Canton was delighted with the evening’s turnout and financial success. Canton made it clear why the event keeps growing. “People tell their friends what a great time they had. I know it has a lot of great buzz around town, and people talk to me about it for months after every year,” she said. “We try to keep it fresh each year by switching up the theme, the show and the overall look.” CASA’s work is vital to the children of Rusk, Upshur and Gregg counties. Many youngsters would simply fall through the cracks were it not for CASA speaking on their behalf. Many Child Protective Services representatives simply do not have the time to handle every case one-on-one. Judges know that by |

assigning CASA, they can insure every unfortunate child has a voice and a chance to escape bad situations. Safe, loving foster homes await battered and neglected children once a CASA is assigned. These advocates also train child-help volunteers. All this is expensive, costing about $1425 per case. The yearly gala is the main reason that over the past seven years more than 500 in-need children have been assigned an advocate. Amy Canton explained

why she loves what she does for CASA this way: “I make time to do this because I know my efforts pay off in a big way,” she said. “I am so blessed to have a husband who supports all the volunteer work I do. I really love all that I do for this show, the friends I have made and the many hours of practice and planning it takes to pull off a show this size.” There is more. The program is indeed a varied and delightful display of talent.

Besides the star performers, the event includes background dancers, a professionally decorated and moving stage, show developer, videographer, stage manager, show director and her assistants, event coordinator, a silent auction committee, decorations committee, photographers, light and sound engineers, special lighting effects, additional entertainers and support cast. The set-up, dress rehearsals and room preps are time-consuming, demanding and expensive, but it all gets done. Canton’s fulfillment is apparent. “I couldn’t be prouder of the show,” she said. “Everyone danced their hardest and had such great attitudes through our really long day. Seeing it all come together is always the best day of the year for me.” The show’s dancers are an especially vital part of the program. They are selected for their willingness to work hard and collaborate as a team. Starting in December, the choreographers devise themes, songs and choreography. Starting in January the dancers, practice once weekly, and twice weekly starting in March.

Off-stage the dancers urge their friends, families and various acquaintances to help promote the event on social media. CASA Executive Director Shelley Smith was delighted and grateful for the show and those who made it possible. “East Texas CASA is so grateful to all the volunteers who make this show happen. It takes our staff, board, committee members, dancers, choreographers, photographers, production and lighting teams and of course Amy Canton to pull it all together,” she said. “We work diligently to ensure that, it’s not just a fundraiser, but an event that the community enjoys and finds entertaining. I know that our funds raised will probably hit a record as well once all are collected. CASA has so far assisted 467 children who would have fallen through the crack this year. These are children from Gregg, Rusk and Upshur counties had to be removed from their homes. East Texas CASA provided advocates for 177 of these children. The goal is to serve 100% of children removed from unhealthy situations in this area while also speaking for them in the court system. The Blue Jeans and Ball Gowns banquet raises the funds that makes this support possible. This is the CASA mission. Ms. King inspires student: A teacher who has inspired my life is Mrs. King. She was strict because she wanted us to stay focused and be successful. She influenced my life by teaching me to never give up and keep trying. No matter what our assignment was, every day Ms. King said, “Never give up. Keep trying.” That quote made me realize that I am more capable of accomplishing any task or challenge than I ever thought possible, so I tried and tried. I could tell that I was doing better in school. My grades reflected my effort, and I felt more confident. Ms. King had a lot of faith in me, and I want to thank her for all that she has done. Mable King honored by Jamaya Smith, Brammlette Elementary School
Ms. Johnson is a great teacher: I care a lot about Mrs. Johnson, my teacher, because she is such a great teacher. Mrs. Johnson is also a great storyteller who puts so much detail into her stories, so much so that I can pictures the scenery. She is a great reader and writer. Maybe that is why she is a reading and writing teacher. The way she reads is outrageous, the way she bolds out her words is marvelous, and the way she gets so into character is extraordinary. She also informs us on details such as idioms, phrases, or actions a character does if it’s something that’s hard for us to understand. I love her very much because she does not scold me. I love her. She showed me how to make the date on the calendar. She taught me to solve addition and subtraction problems. She taught me how to make syllables and write sentences. I like my class. I will miss her when I go to first grade at another school. Dr. Nora Diaz, kindergarten teacher honored by Dariana Aguilar; kindergartner, East Texas Montessori Prep Academy.

Mrs. Campbell the magnificent teacher: Mrs. Campbell. Mrs. Campbell. Mrs. Campbell. The horrifying thought echoed through my mind as I walked down the 4th grade hall on the first day of school. Suddenly, I stopped. I was staring at my most dreaded nightmare—Mrs. Campbell’s door! Little did I know Mrs. Campbell would be the best teacher I had ever had. My magnificent fourth grade teacher named Mrs. Campbell really moved me by pushing and pushing me. Even though she had a strict, sarcastic attitude the majority of the time, she still had a forgiving heart. Alison Campbell, fourth grade teacher, honored by Mary Claire Hilton, fifth grader, Hudson PEP Elementary School

There were more of these expert and loving instructors than could be recognized in one evening. Ray was surprised and delighted at the banquet’s untouched success. It was carried off flawlessly, but Ray was careful to spread the credit around to all involved. She did credit every sponsor many donors, the Board and volunteers. In addition, her husband John Ray helped in numerous ways. A premiere surprise was a new award. This year, the Cornerstone award went to Chuck King, owner of Chick-Fil-A and a loyal supporter of the LISD Foundation. According to Ray, “Chuck King has been instrumental in the success of the annual Green Out event. King whose Christian ethics drives his business modus operandi is constantly giving to make Longview a better place.

Latanya Garlon, great teacher who inspires: Do you have a teacher you remember when you were younger? I do, and her name is Ms. Garlon. Ms. Garlon was my fourth-grade teacher. Ms. Garlon was very strict but nice at the same time, …she wanted everyone to move on to the fifth grade… she knew we could pass the fourth grade and the STAAR test. Today I am in fifth grade, but I wouldn’t be here it if were not for her. Latanya Garlon, fourth grade teacher, honored by Mercia Otahhe, fifth grader, Ned E. Williams ES.
Vanessa Pipkins is a Lamplighter: One teacher who stands out the most is Mrs. Pipkin. She stands out the most because she pushes me to give the best I can give. One time she made me start an assignment over and over until the light bulb turned on in my head and I got it right. …I knew she was making me do my best. I love that Mrs. Pipkin is really inspiring. She tells me that I am going far in life and that she believes in me. Vanessa Pipkin, fifth grade teacher, honored by Kierra Freeman, fifth grader, Ware ES.

Distinguished Guests Ms. Mayhall, My Lamplighter: I have an extreme passion for acting. I have always played different sports and participated in other activities, but I am drawn to theatre. In the three years I have had Miss Mayhall as a teacher, I have adored her. We all have days when we aren’t in a good mood, but when I walk into her room, everything changes. She has changed my perspective on acting and has pushed me to the limit and directed me in the way I should go so that I can pursue my dream of acting. Kayleigh Mayhall, theatre arts teacher, honored by Madalynn Maddox, eighth grader, Foster MS

Mrs. Moon, a Counselor over the Moon: Maybe you heard this name. Right on the hall of fame. Super nice and funny. Maybe she will make your day sunny. On the way to her office, she will greet you with a smile. On to home you will miss her for a while. Nothing to worry about; you will see her soon. No one is kinder than her. In the sky we will see her. On her office, she will have snacks, fun, and more. Unbelievable fun she has in store! Can’t see her at noon. End of my story; see you soon. One time you will see her…somewhere Over the moon. Susan Moon, counselor, honored by Oscar Olivares, fifth grader, South Ward Elementary School.

Mr. Moore: A musician’s lamplighter: Mr. Moore is kind and funny. He has his own way of showing that he is both. I find it funny whenever he teaches us about our sound through food. He says that the full band is a plate of food. The low brass, the section I am in, is the gravy while other sections are other foods such as the meat and mashed potatoes. When he described the band as food, I found myself laughing and hungry. He complimented me when I played my All-Region music with him. Arri Moore, band director, honored by Yudiel Aguirre, eighth grader, Forest Park MS. Student specifically requested not to be published.

Brandis Jamerson my Science Lamplighter: During my elementary years, I struggled a little bit with science. That challenge stopped, when I was in the seventh and eighth grades because Ms. Jamerson, my seventh and eighth grade science teacher, helped me improve my science skills. In her class, students work at science stations and perform experiments. We observe what we are learning, such as the cause of a natural disaster. Ms. Jamerson has influenced my life. I now have a more positive view of science, and I know I can learn it and succeed. Brandis Jamerson, science teacher honored by Kenia Otero, eighth grader, Judson STEAM Academy

Most recently, Mayor Andy Mack gave honored King with a Go-Givers award. As the names connotes, the award is for local citizens who have given above and beyond what is expected. King was surprised because he does not give to get recognized. Hence, he gave a reason for his company’s altruism. “We do what we do because our teachers and administrators are important,” said King. “We are trying to support our teachers and students.” It is important to note Ms. Ray’s work have not gone unnoticed. The Longview Rotary chose her for the 2019 Citizen of the Year Award among very many strong competitors. Excerpts of the essays can be found on the ensuing pages.

BRAIN TEASERS
BODY MIND AND SOUL
Peek in at
LeTourneau University B y K imberly F ish
T
here’s cheering, clapping, and confetti being tossed at Le Tourneau University this spring, but most folks in Longview won’t even know of the celebrations. It’s not because the campus is quiet, it’s because we move so fast, we’re only see what’s right in front of us, and we forget to slow down and peek in on the good things going on right near our backyard. Let’s do ourselves a favor and change that habit. Because of the revolving door of dynamite productions offered through the S.E. Belcher Performing Arts Center and Chapel, most folks who drive onto campus forget to look a little farther south to see the tennis courts and athletic fields near the Solheim Athletic Center. The Joyce Athletic Village is a bee-hive of activity, and it’s worth your time to know the incredible excellence of the student life at 2100 S. Mobberly Avenue. From a renovated basketball venue, to wide, grassy fields built to accommodate baseball, softball, track, soccer, plus many intramural sports, there’s always a reason for the lights to be on at LETU. The quality of sportsmanship at LeTourneau University is trophy-worthy, and worth bragging about, but’s also affordable entertainment for families and individuals who enjoy being spectators to collegiate athletics. With an active schedule of competitive sporting events this spring, it’s worth logging on to www.letu.edu to find the schedule and plan to witness one or many of the NCAA competitions. Student athletes at LeTourneau University are champions on and off the field, and not only behave in a way that

reflects integrity, but they often donate their time and talents in Longview too. Just read this magazine, the newspaper, or follow LETU on Facebook to see their character at work. It’s easy to cheer for athletes that have big hearts. LETU Homecoming celebrations in April gave a push of fun, laughter, and a shared sense of community to those who enjoyed returning to campus for the anniversary celebrations, Hootenanny, and catching up with their professors. The revival of the University Singers has provided a new avenue for students with a love for harmony to enjoy learning choral, jazz, and classical performance music, not only for the entertainment of those attending LETU Homecoming or Chapel but also for those lucky enough to hear them perform in Longview at Trinity Episcopal, or even as they travel to Carnegie Hall this summer to perform with Dr. Jim Taylor in NYC. After the ivy and confetti celebrations of graduation in May, many students will return to their hometowns to pick up summer jobs or internships, but some will stay in Longview too. With over 39 countries represented in the student body of LeTourneau University, many undergraduates stay in town over the summer looking for work, picking up summer courses, and volunteering in the community. These are the bright young minds, and intentional human beings who will take care of us when we are older. It’s worth getting to know them now. Look for ways to connect with LeTourneau University and see what everyone is buzzing about.
