ast year when I started working with alumni, I finally got my ETBU ring. And when they asked me what I wanted to be engraved inside my ring, I chose ‘immeasurably more’ because I know that God is able, and I know that God is more. He is up to something far more abundant than even I could ask or imagine. Far more

than any earthly treasure. Far more than any amount of knowledge or education that you can earn, He is more. He is abundantly more. That is my prayer for you today, seniors. I want to encourage you that there is mercy in the mystery. When you look at your ring, I hope that you will be reminded that God is able, He is more, and He is love.” Cari Johnson, Director of Alumni Relations.

East Texas Baptist University graduating seniors were recently recognized with the presentation of their official ETBU class ring. The ring represents seniors’ hard work and dedication throughout their time on the Hill.

Education Editor's Note Happy Mother’s Day Everyone! We hope everyone is enjoying Spring without the masks. We thank you for reading infinitieplus magazine on our social media platforms and picking up hard copies. This month, we brought you a sweet short story on Lollar’s Jewelry dazzling Longview for 45 years and serving 2-3 generations of customers. Congratulations Lollar’s Jewelry. Healthy eating should be a goal all year long. Choosing nutrientrich foods at the grocery store is a great way to accomplish that goal. The American Heart Association says research suggests the standard American diet is energy-rich (calorically heavy) but nutrient poor. Nutrient-rich foods are those that are high in minerals, vitamins and other nutrients that are vital for health without too much added sugars, sodium, and saturated fat. Such foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean protein sources that can serve as the building blocks of a nutritious diet. Check out the tips in this edition. Another story is the Longview Regional Medical Center reaching a TAVR significant milestone. The Heart and Vascular Institute of Longview Regional’s Structural Heart and Valve Team celebrated a milestone – the completion of 400 minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedures. TAVR is an alternative treatment option for patients with symptomatic aortic valve stenosis, including those patients who are not candidates for open-heart valve surgery. Longview Regional Medical Center was the first hospital in 2015 to bring the TAVR procedure to Longview and has performed more TAVR cases than any other hospital in East Texas. Thanks for reading. We look forward to serving you again in June by God’s grace. Happy Mother’s Day

Science or

G

By GLENN MILLER

OD’S WORD: “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” – Psalm 19:1 We live in a world where science has permitted us to answer many mysteries of the universe. To some, we have come so far as to think that everything is a product of science and can be explained quantitatively and empirically; that faith in a higher being or a God we cannot see is just a hoax or, as some have said, is a crutch that the “unenlightened” use when they can’t explain things. But my observation today is that science in no way contradicts a Sovereign and Omnipotent God. In fact, the more we grow in science, the more it points to the existence of God! When you think about it, every piece of scientific evidence and discovery of the universe’s existence is a gift from God. He created every scientist and enabled each of their minds to unveil His handiwork. Science has been able to discover that A happens because of B and B because of C and so on. But as far down that path as we’ve been able to point, science has never been able to explain the very origin of all things. Example: the Big Bang Theory theorizes that it was a bang of masses of gas and matter…but where did those gases and matter come from? The search for the bottom of the

barrel is never ending. The smartest and most-prolific scientists since the beginning of time and have come to this same conclusion. Blaise Pascal was a brilliant mathematician in 17th century France. He is credited with discovering principles that would ultimately lead to the creation of the computer. Pascal said, “Faith tells us what science cannot, but it is not contrary to their findings. It simply transcends, without contradicting them.” Pascal also said, “Jesus Christ is the only proof of the living God. We only know God through Jesus Christ.” Isaac Newton, the discoverer of gravity and one of the greatest scientists who ever lived, wrote more about the Bible and about Christian theology than he did science. Said the great Newton: “I have a foundational belief in the Bible as the Word of God, written by men who were inspired. I study the Bible daily.” The father of modern chemistry was Oxford professor Robert Boyle, born in 1627. Boyle was not only a diligent student of chemistry, but a diligent student of the Bible. In his will he left a large sum of money to found the "Boyle lectures" for proving the Christian religion. 19th century American Matthew Fontaine Maury is credited as the father of oceanography. He got his

idea that the sea has “lanes” and currents from a verse in the Bible. Psalm 8:8 speaks of “the fish of the sea that pass through the paths of the seas.” One time Maury gave a speech at the inauguration for a college in which he said, “I have been blamed by men of science, both in this country and in England, for quoting the Bible in confirmation of the doctrines of physical geography. The Bible, they say, was not written for scientific purposes, and is therefore of no authority in matters of science. I beg your pardon: the Bible is authority for everything it touches.” That includes, he said, “physical geography, the earth, the sea and the air.” The late Dr. Robert Jastrow was an astronomer and a planetary physicist with NASA, and he wrote a book called, God and the Astronomers. Jastrow noted, “The scientist has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; and as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.” Science doesn’t disprove the existence of God…it simply validates it.

Special Celebration

E

Make Mother’s Day special ach and every day a new woman becomes a mother for the first time or all over again. Being a mother changes a person’s life in dramatic ways. Mother’s Day is a great time of year to honor mothers and attempt to give back just a portion of the tireless love and devotion moms offer their children. For those needing a little inspiration on treating their mothers in special ways, consider these ideas. •

Make mom a breakfast in bed with her favorite morning treats.

Enjoy a movie at home with mom. Let her pick the flick and share her favorite film with you.

Agree to not bicker for the entire day, especially if you are prone to getting into arguments with siblings.

Put together a collage of photos from moments you have shared with mom or your family.

Customize a coffee mug, tote bag or a blanket with a meaningful sentiment or photo. Treat mom to a day off from her chores. Tackle all of the jobs she normally does for the family. Pamper mom with a gift card for her favorite nail salon or massage therapy location.

Begin a charm bracelet tradition by purchasing a charm bracelet and a new charm each year that represents a meaningful memory you both shared.

Write a new email each day with an inspirational quote or special words of love for mom.

Tackle a task that she may not want to do herself, such as washing the exterior of her car and vacuuming the interior.

Mother’s Day gift ideas should come from the heart and can show mothers near and far how much they are appreciated and loved.

he Heart and Vascular Institute of Longview Regional’s Structural Heart and Valve Team recently celebrated a milestone – the completion of 400 minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) procedures. TAVR is an alternative treatment option for patients with symptomatic aortic valve stenosis, including those patients who are not candidates for openheart valve surgery. Longview Regional Medical Center was the first hospital in 2015 to bring the TAVR procedure to Longview and has performed more TAVR cases than any other hospital in East Texas. “This milestone is significant to the community for many reasons, one of notoriety is the volume-

outcome relationship that is recognized in many cardiovascular surgery studies such as the New England Journal of Medicine, that concluded a facility that has a high procedural volume is directly correlated to low mortality rates in Cardiac hospitals," said Dr. Samir Germanwala, Longview Regional Medical Center Interventional Cardiologist. "The Heart and Vascular Institute of Longview Regional has a mortality rate that is significantly lower than the National average and which further supports that Longview Regional is an excellent facility to receive your heart care,” stated Germanwala. “After more than seven years, we serve as a TAVR training hospital for institutions who are planning to add TAVR to their cardiac service line. This is a testimony to the skill and quality of care we provide to our cardiac patients at Longview Regional.”

The ring represents seniors’ hard work and dedication throughout their time on the Hill. “This is always a special day on our campus,” ETBU Vice President for Advancement Scott Bryant said. “It is so great to have so many Tigers graduating in a few weeks and receiving a ring today. We pray that you will wear it with pride as you continue to represent this University. Moving forward, you will be able to use your ring as a great opportunity to share about your time on the Hill and what this place means to you.” A token gift of appreciation from the University to graduating seniors, this graduation ring symbolizes its blessing over students as they commence from ETBU to pursue their career callings. his year’s housing market is set to be just as competitive as in 2021. Home listings are down 60% compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic. With fewer homes for sale and rumors of rising interest rates, houses are selling faster than ever. If you are looking to buy a new home, it’s more important than ever to be prepared. Prospective buyers can make their offer more competitive by getting preapproved for financing before even bidding on a house, which lets sellers know that a buyer is serious and provides reassurance that the sale will close without issues. “It’s a great idea to shop around for a mortgage lender before finding the right home,” Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Central East Texas said. “It puts you in the position to find the best deals and have a better understanding of how mortgages work.” Whether you are buying a home,

5 ways to make your diet more nutritious

H Directions

ealthy eating should be a goal all year long. Choosing nutrientrich foods at the grocery store is a great way to accomplish that goal. The American Heart Association says research suggests the standard American diet is energy-rich (calorically heavy) but nutrient poor. Nutrient-rich foods are those that are high in minerals, vitamins and other nutrients that are vital for health without too much added sugars, sodium and saturated fat. Such foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean protein sources that can serve as the building blocks of a nutritious diet. These tips can make incorporating nutritious ingredients even easier.

1. Read nutrition labels The Nutrition Facts label included on items is a significant source of information. Consumers may

20

www.facebook.com/InfinitiePlusmagazine | https://twitter.com/infinitieplus | infinitieplus | May 2022

only read the first few lines, but it is best to read the entire label before deciding whether or not to purchase a given product.

2. Choose more whole grains Whole grains are low in fat and high in fiber. They’re also a smarter source of carbohydrates because they contain complex carbs that keep a person feeling fuller longer. Try to avoid products labeled as enriched, as they’ve had the germ and bran removed from the grain to produce a smoother texture, which means they need to be refortified with nutrients.

3. Eat dark, leafy greens Green vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and plantbased omega-3 fatty acids. Kale, spinach, and collard greens can be added to soups, stews, scrambled eggs, and salads for a

powerful punch of nutrition.

4. Pick pulses Pulses are essential to plant-based diets, but they also can be enjoyed by meat eaters. The Global Pulse Federation says pulses, which include foods like lentils and chickpeas, are rich in protein and fiber and low in fat. They also contain complex carbohydrates that take longer to break down. Research shows pulses can lower blood cholesterol, reduce blood pressure and help with weight management.

5. Go with skim or low-fat dairy Dairy products are rich in calcium and vitamin D, but those nutrients may come at the cost of saturated fat. Choose reduced fat dairy options in recipes and when snacking. These are just some of the ways individuals can make their diets more nutritious.

ou have planned the date, met with the officiant, decided on what to wear, and booked the venue. But how are you going to arrive in style? Arranging wedding transportation can be tricky, even if it seems like it is a relatively minor detail. However, getting not only the bride and groom, as well as the rest of the bridal party and guests, from point A to point B and even point C is often a taller task than it seems. If the wedding will be held during prom or graduation season, couples may want to reserve vehicles even earlier due to high demand. While rented transportation is not necessary, it is a luxury many couples prefer, as it allows them to leave the driving to someone else. Generally speaking, hired cars will pick up the bride and groom separately before the ceremony; otherwise, they will arrive to the ceremony by other means and then utilize a limo or other vehicle afterward. The transportation will then take the married couple and typically members of the bridal party and immediate family to the reception venue And since the limos will leave after the reception drop off, some other form of transportation will be necessary to take the couple and whomever else rode to the reception

back home (or to the airport). Budget also will dictate if transportation is provided for other guests. The majority or guests will drive their own cars to the wedding. However, if the ceremony and reception site are far apart or if the journey is arduous and out of the way, some well-meaning couples will arrange for transport Pricing out different options can yield the most cost-effective route, which very well may be a school or charter bus instead of several limousines. Couples can start the process by asking their reception venue for transportation recommendations. Or if there are hotel accommodations after the party, the hotel may have connections or offer shuttle services.

More couples are embracing edgy, adventurous weddings Outside-the-Box Menus

Couples may want to break with tradition by offering a wide selection of foods at their receptions. These foods can include items that fit with their specific ethnic cuisines, gourmet comfort foods (think cocktail franks wellington), or foods that fit with their dietary choices, such as organic or vegan options. Work with a caterer to provide a variety of tasty choices.

Bold Wardrobe Choices

B

rides and grooms once felt compelled to conform to the trappings of traditional weddings. From uberromantic vows to pastel colors to the penultimate white tiered cake, various wedding components were long considered must-haves. But modern couples are increasingly expressing their individuality, and even embracing more edgy and adventurous elements, when planning their weddings. According to The Knot, a leading bridal resource and information site, today’s weddings are not what they were just a few years ago. Bold

colors, exotic cakes and nontraditional foliage, are just some of the elements modern couples are embracing to set their weddings apart.

Adventurous Locales

Vineyards and catering halls can be great places to tie the knot, but couples who like to push the envelope are looking to more adventurous locales to impart their unique spin on their weddings. Sharing vows atop a mountain crest at the end of a favorite hiking trail or on a roller coaster at a theme park that harkens back to a first date are some adventurous places to tie the knot.

Brides can put new spins on their gowns by adding color and texture. Sequins, bold embroidery, shorter hemlines, and whatever adventurous fashion style you want to impart can be considered. If white isn’t your thing, that’s okay, too. Yellow and slate gray look great together. Gentlemen can choose to wear a black suit or any combination of color and style they want to make a dramatic impression. Full of flavor Cakes don’t have to be white with white buttercream. In fact, couples can make things even more tasty by incorporating favorite flavor combinations into their cakes. For example, a chocolate and caramel filling reminiscent of a candy bar might be something to consider. Modern couples are embracing bold, unique and edgy components when planning their weddings. Putting an individualized spin on the ceremony and reception can make couples even more excited to tie the knot.

Second Chance

T

aking a chance on love and marriage for the second (or third) time is certainly worthy of celebration. The Pew Research Center reports that at least four in 10 new marriages now include at least one partner who has been married before, a trend that is on the rise. Planning a second wedding can be challenging, as individuals may be worried about proper etiquette, superstitions or meeting the expectations of others. But there are no hard rules governing second weddings. Now that couples are older and a bit more experienced, wedding planning may be met with greater enthusiasm and patience.

Don’t feel beholden to intimate affairs. Second weddings tend to be more intimate, as guest lists tend to be smaller and couples tying the knot again may prefer more intimacy and less hustle and bustle. But couples should not avoid inviting people simply because second weddings are typically small affairs. Invite as many friends and family as you want and as your budget allows. Set up a registry. Established couples may have the household basics already in place, but registries can include fun or entertaining gifts that speak to couples’ interests. These may include home theater systems, fancy cookware, athletic equipment, or even funds for travel.

These tips can help the process along.

PETS IN WEDDINGS

ets play important roles in their owner’s lives and are increasingly included in more activities, such as vacations, dining out and even weddings. The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters says more couples are customizing their wedding celebrations and bridal parties to include pets. Dogs and cats are turning up in wedding photos as well as trips down the aisle. Some pets even serve as ring bearers. Before giving your pet a job for the wedding, consider his personality and temperament. How does the pet react around crowds? A dog or cat accustomed to a quiet home may behave differently when placed in a room full of excited people. In addition, confirm that pets are allowed inside your ceremony space. Certain venues may not allow animals that are not service dogs. Make sure to inform guests that an animal will be present, so those with allergies can take precautions. If it isn’t practical to have animals in the ceremony, give them a primary spot in wedding or engagement photos.

Factors to consider before including Fido in your wedding Pets are full-fledged members of many families and even, apparently, families-tobe. In its 2016 American Wedding Study, Brides magazine found that 8 percent of wedding ceremonies included pets. While the couples of yester-year might have left Fido at home, many of today’s couples want their four-legged friends to be there

on their big day. Though no studies to date have examined which animals are most likely to make an appearance at couples’ nuptials, it’s fair to assume that dogs, which tend to get out of the house more than most other types of pets, are the most common furry bridesmaids, groomsmen or ring bearers. Before including dogs in their wedding plans, couples may want to consider a few factors to ensure asking Fido to be there come the big day is what’s best for couples, their guests and, of course, their beloved pooches.

Eligibility

Some venues do not allow pets that are not documented assistance animals on the premises. Confirm a venue’s pet policy before purchasing any wedding day attire for your dog. Couples who are intent on including their pets in their wedding ceremonies should only consider pet-friendly facilities, which may be hard to find. Couples who plan to take a limousine to and from their wedding also should confirm that the cars allow pets before booking.

Personality

No two dogs are the same. Some dogs might love people and attention, while others might prefer one-on-one time with their owners. Dogs that are sociable and unaggressive may make perfect additions to wedding ceremonies, while animals

that exhibit anxiety around strangers or seem uncomfortable in noisy settings should be kept out of the ceremony.

Health

Dog owners also must consider their pets’ health when deciding whether or not to include them in the wedding ceremony. Couples who bonded over a love of their dog may really hope to include their furry friend in the festivities but should not do so at the expense of the animal’s health. Outdoor wedding ceremonies under sunny skies may produce potentially unhealthy conditions for certain breeds or older dogs. Dogs that have difficulty getting around may need a red wagon (and attendant) to make the rounds at the wedding.

Assistance

Couples will be busy on their wedding days, so they may need to arrange for a caretaker to look after their dog during and after the ceremony. Asking a guest or guests to play this role may be asking too much, as guests will no doubt want to celebrate without having to take care of a dog. A professional pet sitter might work, but that can be costly, as couples must pay for the sitter and will likely need to pay for the sitter to have a seat and a meal during the reception. Dogs can make great additions to weddings, but couples must consider a host of factors before deciding to have Fido join them as they tie the knot.

iamonds are the stone of choice for engagement rings and wedding jewelry. Diamonds are durable and remain a timeless way to complement every style. Anyone who is about to purchase a diamond is encouraged to do their research about selecting quality diamonds. At the heart of the diamond grading process are the 4 Cs of diamond quality. The Cs refer to carat weight, color grade, clarity grade, and cut grade. The Gemological Institute of America {GIA}helped to create the Diamond 4 Cs and the International Diamond Grading System. These benchmarks are used to classify all diamonds. The following is the GIAs explanation of each component of the system. Carat: Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much the diamond weighs and is equivalent to 200 milligrams per carat. Each carat is subdivided into 100 points. Therefore, a one-carat diamond is 1.00 or 100 points, while a twentyfive point diamond is .25 carats. Naturally, larger diamonds can be rare and desirable.

Add a personal touch. Taking a sweetheart back to a special place that recalls a significant moment can set the backdrop for a memorable proposal.

Enlist help from others. Ask friends and close family members to be your accomplices so that information can be gathered without generating suspicion. This can be especially helpful when finding the perfect ring.

Embrace the old fashioned. Show respect to future in-laws by speaking to them about intentions to propose and ask for their blessings. Get down on bended knee when asking for a sweetheart’s hand.

Keep it simple. The more complex a proposal, the more opportunities for things to go wrong. Simplicity, even if it means keeping the proposal to yourself until the question has been popped.

Marriage proposals happen every day. With humor, confidence and a heart full of love, popping the question can be a success.

Cut: To transmit light and sparkle, diamonds must be cut precisely and with great artistry. A diamond will be further graded based on symmetry and proportions, as well as how the stone returns light. Brightness, which is the internal and external white light reflected; fire, or the scattering of white light into rainbow colors; and scintillation, or the sparkle the diamond produces, are factored into how the cut is valued.
