Somer Valley FM, the local radio station for North East Somerset, based in Midsomer Norton, continues to extend their reach, launch new shows, and meet listeners at outside events.

"There is a gap. We are here to fill it, across the South West," Richard Burgess, Station Manager at Somer Valley FM, detailed how the local radio station continues to grow, whilst ensuring local issues remain front and centre.

"With BBC radio reducing their local broadcasts, combined with commercial radio stations moving towards more nationally orientated shows, this is the time for local radio to grow, shine, and ensure local communities are heard," Richard continued, "We will always concentrate on Somer Valley matters. Midsomer Norton, Paulton, Peasedown St John, Radstock, Westfield and other

parish councils we feature on a regular basis. All our fantastic organisations, supporting our communities, have a home here where they can share their news and information."

Along with the 97.5FM transmitter across the North East Somerset area, DAB listening is also expanding. "Across Bristol, you can hear us on DAB now," said Richard. "Our tram of directors lead our OFCOM application for DAB in Bath and North East Somerset. We are confident, by year end, we can be heard in cystal clear quality from Chilcompton to Clifton."

And into the Spring, more new shows launch. With over 15 hours each day of live and fresh shows, commercially-focussed during weekdays, speciality broadcasts evenings and weekends, there is a sound for everyone.

New presenters include Vira Navalihina (above) with ‘The Ukraine Show with Vira’, and Jessica Keira Marchant (below) with her ‘Variety Show’. ‘Our new presenters "I'm excited about our new presenters," said Richard. "Jessica approached us from Bristol, having heard good things about Somer Valley FM. With her previous radio, social media and print skills experience, expect media savvy great content. Vira is a Ukrainian refugee. We met via our sponsors, Curo. I’m pleased we’ll air a show in both English and Ukrainian, with content from each country. We’ll learn more about Ukrainian culture and history, and some language lessons too. We have over 400 refugees from Ukraine across Bath and North East Somerset. This is our little way of hopefully adding a little happiness for them."

2022 saw Somer Valley FM’s attendance at outside events dramatically increase after lockdown

finished. There will be more this year.

"Where to start?" Wondard Richard, "We love an outside event! Last year proved what an appetite these is across our area to live festivals. From the Jubilee celebrations through to the sold-out Outfield Festival, both interest and attendance levels were far higher than was expected."

SOMER vALLEY FOODBANK fEEDS 20,000 oVEr tEN yEar S

Asocial welfare project set up in January 2013 has recently marked its 10 year anniversary.

The Somer Valley Foodbank, originally established as a collaboration between local churches and community leaders, is nestled under the charitable status of St John’s Church, Peasedown St John.

The foodbank, which runs food distribution centres in Midsomer Norton, Radstock and Paulton, has been at the forefront of helping some of local area’s most needy ever since its doors opened.

Paul Woodward is the project’s coordinator. He said: “Thanks to all the local businesses, churches and community groups that have supported the Somer Valley Foodbank over the past decade. Your help and encouragement has enabled us to provide a support and advice service to those that need it the most.

"Now, more than ever before over the last 10 years, there has never been a greater need for the Somer Valley Foodbank’s existence. With the rise in the cost of living, and more people finding it difficult to make ends meet, we’re seeing an unprecedented demand for our services.”

Since January 2013, 7,296 food vouchers have been issued across the Somer Valley. That’s 19,485 people fed – 10,689 adults and 8,796 children.

Of those visiting the distribution centres, single people are using the service the most, followed by families, single-parent families and then couples. A staggering 172,300 tonnes of food have been given out!

The foodbank is run by a large team of volunteers, 75 in total, who keep the project running each and

every week.

“We wouldn’t be able to support the amount of people we do without our dedicated volunteers”, added Paul, “of our 75 volunteers, 30 have been with us since the very beginning.”

The Somer Valley Foodbank’s large team of volunteers are being thanked in the near future with a Volunteer Thank You Event. They all give up their time for free to either help out at the warehouse, collect food and donations, drive vehicles or staff one of the four distribution centres.

Foodbanks provide three days of emergency food to people who need it the most. Professionals, such as, health visitors, social workers and the CAB, identify people in crisis and issue them with a Foodbank voucher.

The voucher can be taken to a Foodbank distribution centre where a friendly team of volunteers will offer a cup of tea and help people with their food needs.

MIDSOMER N ORTON C HURCHYARD

The Churchyard in Church Lane has monuments from the 19th century and in the early 1900s, extra land was gifted by members of the church congregation over a number of years, so that burials could still take place in Midsomer Norton when the land around the church became full.

There are 14 war graves from the first and second world wars in the cemetery.

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of St John's Church is responsible for the maintenance of the Churchyard including regular grass mowing, upkeep of equipment and tree maintenance. We are very grateful to CFH Docmail who kindly provide people to cut and strim the grass. Were it not for this, the PCC would be unable to cover the costs of maintaining the churchyard. In addition, essential maintenance of the trees can cost up to £3000 to fell a single tree. In 2022, we had to fell 2 large trees due to disease. Wansdyke council used to make up any deficit incurred, however B&NES no longer offer this support, so all costs have to be met by the PCC.

In 2022 a working party of church members was created. They have enthusiastically worked on clearing the paths, trimming bushes and low hanging branches above the paths. The mound at the bottom of the churchyard previously occupied by badgers has now been cleared and has been seeded as a wildflower patch.

There is much more work to do over the coming year including clearing overgrown areas, trimming hedges and further developing the wildflower area. Somer Valley FM, the local radio station for North East Somerset, based in Midsomer Norton, were honoured to play a part in celebrating local birthdays.

"Every presenter here loves hearing from our listeners," commented Richard Burgess, Somer Valley FM's Station Manager. "So, we were delighted in being able to broadcast dedications for a couple of our seasoned listeners over the weekend."

On his Saturday Breakfast show, Tristan Reakes celebrated Phyllis Luffman’s 101st birthday with a dedication. The following day, Chris Griffiths helped make Peggy Childs’ 104th birthday memorable with another on-air song request for her special day.

Phyllis and Peggy are both residents of Beechcroft Homes in Midsomer Norton, where the station is played daily. Sue Lewis, home manager, contacted Somer Valley Fm to make the requests.

After his Sunday Breakfast show, Chris then visited the residential home with flowers for both birthday girls.

Speaking about the on-air birthday celebrations and flower deliveries, Sue said: "What a lovely gesture, thank you so much, the two residents were absolutely thrilled."

"Yet again, our volunteers go above and beyond," said Richard. "It's not just about making great radio that's so important to us, it's also about making a difference in our community, I could not be prouder of our team at Somer Valley FM."

MUSEUM'S BUILDING TOY ExHIBITION

Radstock Museum has a new temporary exhibition for spring called “Buildings in a Box: the miniature world of architectural construction toys”. Open until the 14th May 2023..

The exhibition draws from the personal collection of the curator and shows the wonderfully wide range of architectural building toys that have been produced across the world from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. From simple wooden nursery blocks, through complicated constructions of metal to the familiar interlocking plastic bricks of today, toymakers have given children the chance to build houses, castles, log cabins, railway stations and so much more.

We are open in the afternoons, Tuesday through to Sunday, from 2pm until 5pm and on Saturdays, we are open 11am until 5pm. Our tearoom and bookshop are also open and temporary exhibitions are included in the museum entrance ticket.

LotS HappENINg at THE LIBRARY

Throughout March we’ll be celebrating Women’s History Month with book displays featuring some of our favourite female authors. One of our favourite days of the year is also in March: World Book Day!

Taking place on 2nd March, we’ll be dressing up and having lots of bookish fun! We’ll be having a special Storytime and Craft session, so do dress up as your favourite storybook character and drop in!

For parents and carers of 0-5 year olds, we’ve got our popular Storytime session which take place on Wednesdays from 10.30 – 11am (term time only) and sing along at Baby Bounce and Rhyme on Mondays at 11 – 11.30am (also term time only).

Both sessions are free of charge and so just drop in and enjoy.

In April, we’ll be promoting Reusable Nappy Week by showcasing our Reusable Nappy Kits that you can buy at a heavily discounted price from any of our B&NES Information Services. Just ask a member of staff for more details. We’ll be getting ready for a visit from the Easter bunny, so we’ll be decorating the library with some Easter crafts – check our social media for dates of our Easter activities.

On 23rd April we’ll be looking forward to picking a book to curl up with and putting our feet up ready for World Book Night.

SCOUTING for ta LENt

1st Midsomer Norton Scout Group helps around 100 young people enjoy fun and adventure while developing skills for life. With two Beaver Scout Colonies, two Cub Packs and a Scout Troop, our friendly leadership team is always kept busy and open to new members joining the team.

If you choose to volunteer, you can work directly with young people or in a support role as a team or individual. Prior experience or a connection with Scouting is not necessary and we welcome people from different backgrounds. Remember, you can decide how much or little time you give to Scouting.

We have three specific roles that we are looking to fill in the next few months. Two back-office roles – Group Chair and Secretary.

The Chair arranges team meetings, to keep ideas, requirements and actions moving forward; organises the annual general meeting; and oversees finances and events with the Treasurer and Group management team.

The Secretary takes and circulates meeting minutes and carries out other admin tasks for the management team.

But if you would like to be more involved with supporting leaders and helpers with their skills and

training; ensuring activities for our young people are safe and offer unforgettable experiences and taking more of a hands-on approach to developing and encouraging our members, then the Group Scout Leader role might be something you’d be interested in.

MSN RUGBY CLUB roUND Up

It has been an exciting season for Midsomer Norton who have confounded any preseason worries and expectations.

A young First XV, almost exclusively featuring players who have come through the youth setup, have won 10 and drew 1 of their opening 14 fixtures, and are just two points off of the promotion places. Captain Tom Fear continues to lead the side by example, as one of the best players in the league, whilst the standout player this term has been Hugh Jeffery, who has amassed 26 tries in the opening 14 fixtures.

The club continues to proudly field two more senior sides and the Second XV, being led by Jacob Mattick and former club captain Matthew Denning, continue to rebuild as results improve. The Third XV, featuring a mix of veteran and youth, enjoy social rugby fixtures, almost every week in the local leagues.

The Junior Section continues to run training and

matches for boys and girls up to the age of 12, as well as boys until the age of 18. The sides, led by fantastic volunteer coaches - many of whom are current or former players - have fostered a wonderful positive family friendly atmosphere that runs right through the club. Of particular note is the progress of the Under 15s, many of whom are relatively new to the game, who's performances have been a marked improvement on previous seasons and already look to contain numerous stars of the future.

As well as the thrilling entertainment on the pitch, the club hosts a range of social events, including live bands and screening all the major sporting events inside the clubhouse - from the Six Nations to Boxing.

If you fancy putting your old boots back on, or even fancy taking up a new sport, new players of all ages and abilities are welcome at Midsomer Norton RFC! For adults, we have coached training

sessions on Tues and Thurs from 7pm at Norton Down. A mix of fitness, skills, run through and more, help you develop your game and get involved. The bar is open after sessions and we even provide a warm meal after Tuesday's training. We also have touch sessions on Thursdays aimed at over 35s who just fancy a bit of fitness and fun (and maybe a pint...).

NORTON RADSTOCK U3A

Norton Radstock u3a is part of a nationwide organisation. It is aimed at retired and semi-retired people who are interested in joining a group of like-minded people, which offers opportunities to work together running activities, learning a new skill or just making new friends.

We have monthly daytime meetings and an informal monthly coffee morning, both held at the Somer Centre, Midsomer Norton.

We have over 200 members who have a choice of

some 20+ smaller groups meeting in various local locations.

These are run by the members and include book clubs, various music groups, walking, scrabble, psychology and chess and other events.

MaSSagE IN SCHooLS prograMME at WELTON pRIMARY SCHOOL

Kingfisher Class (Y3) at Welton Primary School have been fortunate enough to have Cally Herbert from Boys in Mind (local wellbeing charity) and the Massage in Schools Programme (MISP) joining them every Monday afternoon this term.

The vision of the Massage in Schools Programme (MISP) is that every child experiences positive and nurturing touch in their daily life. The programme consists of a basic routine of age-appropriate movements. Children are gradually taught a set routine carried out in the same order, over clothes on each other’s backs, shoulders, arms, hands and heads.

The benefits of massage have proven that it:

• strengthens the immune system

• lowers stress levels

• increases the production of hormones associated with relaxation

Children gain:

• the opportunity to learn and experience saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to touch,

• improved concentration levels,

• Develop respect for peers and increased selfesteem.

Teachers note:

• that there is more harmony and calm collaboration within the classroom,

• the benefits of an activity which is not targetorientated

• there are innovative ways for bringing the curriculum alive

Head teachers see:

• a sense of unity in the entire school

• it as a practical tool for use against bullying and less poor behaviour in the playground

• more respect for school materials, property and buildings

Parents experience:

• having a positive action that helps to calm their child, as well as their child sleeping better at night

• an activity they can share with their child

• an improvement in sibling relationships

Following the recent coronavirus pandemic, many children have not been able to experience the basic human need for touch with family members and friends. They are often under intense pressure due to the increasing demands put on them to succeed. The MISP offers children a breathing

space in their busy lives, reducing their stress levels and encouraging more cooperation.

The children are also excited to be part of a film being made for the Boys In Mind charity who are funding the sessions! They are now looking

forward to watching the video at a premier shared with the whole school community in March and are hoping it will be available for others to watch on the Boys in Mind website very soon.

When it comes to taking care of our pet’s wellbeing, keeping an eye on their oral health is a massive factor in ensuring they stay fit and healthy. Like us humans, there are a multitude of ways we can keep our pet’s teeth in check, and looking and smelling clean all day long. From ultrasonic teeth cleaning to dental chews, we have everything you need to keep your dog’s gnashers in check and their smile beaming 24 hours a day. Bad breath in dogs can be caused by a multitude of reasons and are very common. In fact, 80% of dogs begin to show signs of oral disease by the time they are 2 years old! The causes include food residues on or between the teeth, or residues from play activities like chewing. Even if these reasons for bad breath in dogs are relatively harmless, they should be taken seriously, because if ignored, they can lead to tartar.

Ultrasonic tooth brushing is a great help in removing tartar and preventing build up.

The ultrasound waves are transmitted via each wet toothbrush bristle to the toothpaste, creating millions of micro-bubbles that penetrate deep below the gumline & into the smallest gaps between the teeth & gum pockets. The ultrasound also increases the blood flow to the gums to heal wounds & stop bleeding.

Another vital element of our dog’s health is their coats, and thankfully there are a few very easy steps you can

take in order to keep your dogs’ coats and skin healthy. A dog's coat and skin make up between 10% and 15% of its entire body weight and is the biggest essential organ of your canine companion's body. Your dog’s skin and coat are also a great indicator if there is a problem and is often the first thing a vet will look at when examining them.

Regular grooming and washing with natural soaps and shampoos, alongside treats and chews that are loaded with skin and coat friendly nutrients, are all great methods in taking steps to look after your furry friend’s precious coats. We recommend researching what fur type your dog has, as this can influence how frequently they need to be groomed, as well as what brush type needs to be used! Dogs with a curly coat, such as doodle varieties, need to be particularly careful of matting as this can cause pain and discomfort, so regular brushing is needed to prevent this.

So, when it comes to keeping your four-legged friends pain free, whether that’s their oral health or their coats, with a few simple snacks, some wonderful washes and glorious grooming products, it’s easy to keep your dog’s skin, coat and teeth looking and feeling at their very best.

CAN WE HAvE A FUNERAL IN A FIELD?

This is a question that you don’t get asked every day, but the answer was whole heartedly, yes!

When it comes to funeral planning, the priority is to deliver what a family want, not what tradition states.

Gone are the days when the choices are church or crematorium, but sadly, these are the only options given to the majority of grieving families, and they have no idea that other options and possibilities are available to them. The approach should always be “What would you like to happen?” Not “This is what will happen”.

The family of D wanted something to match his personality and character. A quirky, unconventional man, always looking for a new adventure and who loved the outdoors and nature.

Religion never played a part in his life, he requested there was none included at his funeral. Not a problem, this is becoming a more regular request. Can we have the ceremony in a field, with the coffin there? Of course you can, let’s discuss what you would like and how we can make it work for you.

This is the response you should hear from any funeral director worth their salt. The arrangements were made, the field was chosen, and the family started in their quest to turn the field, in the middle of nowhere on the Somerset Levels, into a festival type place.

What a job they did too, a huge stretch tent was erected, adorned with bunting, garlands and fairy lights. The sound system was set up with a mic for the ceremony and D’s playlist blasting through the speakers.

After weeks of hot, dry weather, the rain came. It started the day before the funeral and the day of the funeral was very, very wet. The hearse rolled cautiously into the field avoiding the slippery mud track followed by the limo. Family and friends, with guidance from bearers, carried his willow coffin into the tent.

The Celebrant led ceremony had structure, as the family requested, and the focus was D, his life and achievements and tributes were made from family and friends, each one sharing a different perspective on his life. There was music played and a slideshow of images of his life through the years.

The ceremony ended and it was time to head to the crematorium for a private family committal. Hearse, limo and back up vehicle left the muddy field without incident and D was bid a final farewell.

His family later returned to the field where they continued the celebration of his life with extended family and friends.

D’s family were happy their wishes had been carried out and they had been able to give him the send-off he wanted.

SHOpFRONT IMpROvEMENTS aC ro SS tHE HIgH StrEE t

Midsomer Norton is one of more than 60 High Streets designated as a Heritage Action Zone, and support for shopfront improvements is one element of the Historic England grant funded programme. Work with local businesses and property owners is now underway to help breathe new life into the town centre, providing opportunities to renew and improve shopfronts, facades and signage.

Shopfront improvements in Midsomer Norton will focus on small scale, affordable interventions (e.g. new awnings or signage) to have maximum impact on the High Street’s appearance.

While each project will be different dependent aspirations of those involved and the location of the shop, a full study of each shopfront on the High Street and associated design guidance has been produced to provide a framework and starting point for discussion.

The shopfront improvement scheme will be delivered throughout 2023 and into 2024. If you are interested in participating in the scheme, there

Other investment from the Heritage Action Zone programme includes: grant support for the Town Hall transformation project (underway); grant support for the delivery of the new Town Square at the Island; and improvements to the High Street including new benches, murals such as Unit 14 and marketing and promotion including banners.

The High Streets Heritage Action Zones (HAZ) is a £95 million government-funded programme led by Historic England and designed to secure lasting improvements to our historic high streets for the communities who use them.

The most common symptoms of an allergic reaction include:

Sneezing, coughing, a runny or blocked nose, a red itchy rash, worsening of eczema or asthma symptoms, itchy and watery eyes.

Though there might be more severe reactions including anaphylaxis – so allergies should always be taken seriously.

Anaphylaxis is severe and potentially life threatening, so look out for the following symptoms:

Feeling lightheaded or faint, difficulties breathing , wheezing, fast heartbeat, clammy skin, feelings of confusion, collapsing, losing consciousness, Swelling and Sickness.

Here are the most common allergens that can cause reactions ranging from mild to full anaphylaxis.

Food – nuts, milk, fish, shellfish and some fruits are the ones known to cause the most reactions. You can combat this by making sure that you correctly label any cakes or treats that you make and by being aware of what ingredients you use when feeding friends or relatives. These days, with raised awareness, there are plenty of free from options at

supermarkets and other stores, so make sure to stock up on dairy free or nut free items when hosting any parties just in case. You can also easily find gluten free options too.

Medicines – the most common reactions come from aspirin and antibiotics, so don’t administer medication to anyone without checking first.

Insect stings – wasps and bees in particular, so make sure to be aware and prepared just in case.

Many mild symptoms can be made easier by using over the counter antihistamines, but you can help support those that have allergies by reducing the number of triggers in their vicinity, such as not having flowers in the house or keeping a nut free kitchen. If you have pets and your guests have allergies, make sure to clean the rooms that they will be in before they arrive and keep the pets away from them. You can also keep the windows open to stop dander and fur from settling.

Those who have severe allergies often carry an epi-pen around with them, so make sure you know where they keep it in case of emergencies. Don’t administer their pen unless you know how to do so correctly.

Our driving team help to get people who have no transport of their own across B&NES. We have regular and ad hoc trips with a wide variety of journeys and as a driver, you decide what type of journeys you enjoy, so you can pick what you like, all the passengers you take

will be mobile enough to get in and out of the car with minimal assistance.

Radstock & Midsomer Norton Lions are gearing up to host a musical fundraising concert on 29th April at 7pm at The Midsomer Norton Town Hall with all proceeds going to the Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

The musical evening will be a double billed event with the popular and entertaining Norton Radstock U3A Guitar Group known as The Singing Guitar Group and Rock Choir, the UK’s original, award-winning, local, contemporary choir. If you don’t know what to expect, Rock Choir and Singing Guitar Group are all about singing, fun, community, friendship and life-changing experiences, their performances always leave the audience on a high! The local Frome choir and surrounding Warminster, Trowbridge and Chippenham choirs will be coming together for an amazing performance filled with all your favourite pop and rock songs! You won’t want to miss it.

Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) looks after over 550 families and children and young people with life limiting and life threatening conditions. Over 230 families are cared for from our local children’s hospice, Charlton Farm in Wraxall. CHSW are dedicated to making the most of short and precious lives through the provision of the

best possible hospice care for children and young people with life-limiting conditions.

Heidi Roberts, Area Fundraiser for B&NES, said: “CHSW is delighted that the Lion’s club has decided to support us in 2023 with a wonderful concert in aid of the charity. Music plays such an important part in the hospice, and we use music therapy with a lot of the children in our care to help them express themselves. It is set to be a wonderful musical evening."

At Midsomer Norton

Primary School, we are always looking for ways to help children understand what mental health is and what we can do to have good mental health.

In September, we set up a Children’s Mental Health Team. The team carried out a survey to find out what makes everyone happy in school and what might make them feel sad. We are using this information to inform what we do next.

The team planned a long list of things that make everyone feel happy for Children's Mental Health Week, which took place from 6th - 13th February. Some of the suggestions included, sitting with friends in class, listening to music, cuddling our favourite soft toy and doing exercise. There were lots of brilliant ideas which put a smile on everyone's face.

We also have a group of children who are training to be peer mediators. Peer mediators listen and can help children when they have a worry on the playground. They can offer advice and take you to see a trusted adult for more support. They are good at listening, being supportive and helping out.

30tH aNNIVEr Sary CELEBratIoN at SWALLOW CHARITY

SWALLOW, the local charity based in Midsomer Norton supporting teenagers and adults with learning disabilities, is celebrating its 30th Birthday in 2023. SWALLOW was founded in 1993 by a group of people, including those with learning disabilities, to develop a new way of offering support.

Since then, the charity has remained user led and has grown in response to need, it now supports more than 150 people throughout Bath and North East Somerset.

To start its 30th Celebrations it has produced

30 short films encapsulating what the charity is about and featuring members, staff, Trustees and supporters. The films can be viewed at www.swallowcharity.org/30th-anniversary.

Radstock Museum's free Community Cafés are up and running again.

There are three cafés so far. The Memory Club is a stimulating session for people with memory loss and dementia and features activities based on different senses, games and crafts and time to chat over a cup of tea/coffee and biscuits. It is held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month 10.30am-12 noon.

The Local History Club is a group to share local history, peoples’ stories and to discover hidden treasures with games, quizzes, tea/coffee and biscuits. It is held on 1st and 3rd Monday of every month 10.30am-12 noon.

The Wellbeing Café for Carers is a group to chat and relax, try different craft activities with some games and maybe exercise or a stretch. Tea, coffee and biscuits included. It is held on the 4th Monday of every month 2pm-3.30pm.

One visitor said: "I really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the community cafés and the volunteers are very friendly and welcoming".

OUR BLUE SpACES pROJECT

The Bristol Avon Rivers Trust's (BART) 'Our Blue Spaces' project aims to instil a new appreciation for the natural environment in the Somer Valley Rediscovered (SVR) area around Midsomer Norton and Radstock, as well as to provide new and exciting ways for the local community to enjoy their local blue and green spaces in the area..

BART's first event was a river dip along the Wellow Brook in October 2022. Participants learned how to identify a variety of freshwater invertebrates, and gained a better understanding of the Wellow Brook's health. Members of the community were able to reconnect with their local river and learn about the pressures impacting our freshwater

environments and the creatures that live there, all while developing new skills.

BART will hold one of our annual RiverBlitz events in Midsomer Norton in Summer 2023 to further reconnect the community with their local watercourse. Volunteers will collect samples from their local river using our free and simple water quality testing kits to determine nutrient levels.

Individuals or groups can participate in rainwater harvesting planting events or RiverBlitz, and BART encourages school groups to do so as well!

EVENtS at WELtoN CHUrCH'S CREATIvE SpACE

Creative Space is a fairly new event, ideal for anyone who would like to experiment and give things a try, alongside those who are already artistic and creative.

All of the materials are provided free of charge, and you will be made very welcome with plenty of hot drinks and cake, whatever your ability. With a wide variety of workstations to choose from, such as flower arranging, pottery, poetry and creative writing, aboriginal dotty art, wooden animals, there’s always something for everyone. The idea for the workshops came from a creative team at Welton Baptist church, keen to share their enthusiasm and feedback so far has been hugely positive.

ST VIGOR and St John Church School in Chilcompton, near Radstock, is celebrating a glowing Ofsted report which rated Early Years and Behaviour and Attitudes as Outstanding. Inspectors from the education watchdog rated the school as good overall with outstanding features.

Pupils were said to be proud to attend a school where “leaders have created a culture of high expectation, respect and tolerance”.

Early years education at St Vigor and St John, which also has an on-site nursery, The Mill, run by school leaders, was judged to be outstanding, as was behaviour and attitudes while the school was rated good for quality of education, leadership and pupils’ personal development.

The two inspectors who visited the 212-pupil school in October said the children contributed keenly to school life, charity and their community, took active leadership roles and were confident and eager to share their learning with visitors.

“Pupils have hugely positive attitudes towards their learning. They can talk about what they are learning and how it relates to what they learnt before. In the classroom, pupils focus on their learning with enthusiasm,” the report said. Ofsted said: “Leaders have high ambitions for all their

pupils. Staff say they are ‘believed in’ and this gives them confidence the school will continue to improve.”

The inspectors also highlighted the forest school days, where children learn resilience and how to take risks, and pupils work in tending the school garden and feeding the chickens, as well as the school’s support for the local foodbank. Ofsted suggested that the school, part of the Bath and Wells Multi Academy Trust, should build on recent improvements to the governing body to ensure that school leaders received critical support and challenge.

Headteacher Chris Chorley said: “We are delighted with this report, which really captures the community spirit and passion for learning that is central to our school.

“The family atmosphere helps all children feel safe and creates a strong climate for learning. We are determined to continue developing our excellent provision so that all our learners can fulfil their potential.”

BWMAT CEO Nikki Edwards said: “This is a wonderful report about a wonderful school where qualities such as high aspirations and respect are to the forefront in equal measure. Chris and his team work so hard and this mix of Good and Outstanding in the inspection report is a testament to all the staff team’s efforts.”
