The City of Wells

Illuminated Carnival A very warm welcome to our beautiful City of Wells, for our spectacular Carnival procession. We are nearing the end of another year of Somerset winter carnivals and the title race for supreme Champions is as tight as ever and expectations are high for those in the running. So this will make our Carnival more exciting for the spectator to really enjoy on this evenings parade as it runs through the tight streets of Wells. We, the committee, really hope you have a safe and enjoyable evening and hopefully a dry one. We hope to beat last years collection and reach a target of 12 thousand pounds and as always we hope you can donate as much money as you can to reach this amount. Pedlars who sell you their ware are inflating the cost you pay to them and we receive very little from them in return, and

you also get no guarantee of the quality of the items, so be warned. 100% of the money you kindly donate to us goes to help the very local charities who we support here in Wells. Thank you for your attendance tonight and have a safe journey home please be patient when leaving the City and follow all the diversion signs in place to guide you out.

Mr Martin Coppell Chairman Wells City Carnival Ltd

Message from our President It’s that time again already. Doesn’t it ever fly when you’re having fun. And that’s exactly what we have in mind for the good people of Wells when we proudly present the annual Wells City Carnival 2013. Celebrating the demise of good old Guy Fawkes we bring you the splendour of music lights and dancing all mixed together to create a wonderful spectacle which brings huge surprises at every turn. A long standing tradition which stands the test of time still somehow defying the odds and continuing to go from strength to strength. We do of course rely on a vast amount of extremely hard work by the clubs for building and bringing the entries to Wells for us to enjoy. The great help from the many volunteers who help us on the day, both marshalling and collecting, is very important to us also. Without all of them we wouldn’t have a show. We plead with you, the public, to show your appreciation by placing your donations in one of our many official collecting tins or floats. We do get unofficial traders at all carnivals who do not donate to our funds at all, please be wary of these and give generously to a bonifide collector. Lastly may I ask if you have an interest in helping out with the Wells Carnival Committee we would welcome you at any of our meetings. Your city needs you! Maurice Day (Hon.President)

Globe Carnival Club Last year Globe Carnival Club enjoyed another successful year with ‘Rock Vegas’ with a look at the seedier side of the entertainment capital of the world. This year they are off to Western Africa the home of the Voodoo cult, Perhaps the oldest religion which has since spread all over the world due to the Slave Trade. So it’s all Hexes Curses and Sacrifices this year for the Globe. The main features of the build are the the chariots which are pulled by the incarnations of ‘Damballah’ the snake god, the creator of all life. Inside the chariots are his voodoo practitioners who will dance the night away as they snake there way along the Carnival Route. The Dancers are once again bedecked in magnificent costumes. Some recognition is long overdue to Pauline Williams who once again has been casting her artistic spell over them. Pauline has over 30 years experience in Carnival with Pegasus and now Globe providing Trojan service in the background. The Globe are now the only Wells club to meet and build close to the City, the club are always on the lookout for new members to keep the Spirit of Carnival and the Wells Carnival Tradition going. Prospective new members should give Sue Barber a ring on 01761 418320 and come down and meet us at Wells football club every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. Mendip Vale Carnival Club Mendip Vale Carnival Club has had an interesting year, after last year’s disco theme ‘Dancing in November’ the club set their sights on 2013 and the way the club would move forward. But before this could happen, the clubs overall future hung in the balance. Club chairman Dan fowler says “Over the past 20 months the club has been faced with a large business rates tax on the shed where we build in Glastonbury. Due to rules changing in business rates relief, our shed is of a size that meant we were liable for a bill of many thousands”. The situation couldn’t have come at a worse time, as the entry forms and final deadlines for the 2013 entry all came at the same time as a tribunal hearing that had been set, an emergency meeting was called and the club had to act very fast. This meant with the future uncertain and the winter carnivals only being 8 weeks away, the plans for their 100ft entry had to be scrapped and a last minute ‘back up’ design had to be brought in, as time and more importantly money was not on their side. Dan explained “We have had the bill reduced but we are still owing thousands and we are continuing to come to an agreement on the terms of the annual tax sum, having said that we have a good little idea and are determined that a tax bill will not bring us down, we are the oldest club in midsomerset and are approaching our 50th year in the parades”. This year’s entry is entitled ’Merry Christmas’ which is a livery winter scene although only on a tractor and generator due to the above issue, still plans to be a credit to the club and a teamwork entry for what has been a hard year. Christmas has been done as a theme many times in carnival, but is always a crowd pleaser on the cold November nights. Cart Captains Liam Guise and Andrew Bennett both say “It really did come close to the wire in terms of doing any sort of float this year, of course the aim was to bring out 100ft cart, but our hands where simply tied due to money and the timing of

everything. There’s an incredible amount of work that goes into getting any sort of entry out on the road. The restrictions and costs put upon clubs now are that carnival has to become a full time job throughout the year, and the commitment has to be increased. Despite the smaller entry this year we have both enjoyed some of the previous tractor and generator entries that we have done in the past, so all we hope for is to go out and have a good time as a club, we are all pulling together to ensure that we get out and enjoy carnival 2013”. Mendip Vale are hoping the Christmas feel good cart will warm up the crowd at the winter parade through their home town of Wells. Cart captains
