THE CITY OF WELLS

Illuminated Carnival

Well here we go again folks, this year is a special year as we all remember The First World War of 1914 one hundred years ago, and all those young men and women who fought for our freedom, many of which could have been your kin-folk. We thank god for those who survived and we pray for those that did not return home. God Bless them all. Wells Carnival has been going for more than a hundred years also, the earliest entry we have in this programme is from around 1919, which could have been the first carnival after the great war. How the entries have changed in this time to the present! It’s a well known fact our Carnival is the biggest event held here in Wells, bringing in over £250,000 to local businesses, hotels, cafes, pubs and clubs etc, on the day. A truly fantastic amount of money, which they would not get if the Carnival comes to an end in the future. The money the committee collects come from the very kind donations from you; the general public, and also from those businesses which contribute every year, truly is appreciated. We thank you one and all, it is really appreciated. We would also like to thank those volunteers from commitees across Somerset and beyond who help us with the smooth

Message from our President It is my great pleasure to welcome you all from near and far to our fantastic parade .I can promise you a show which will have you enthralled from the first cart to the last. A carnival which I anticipate will take 2 1\2 hours, to pass any one point, a show which is worthy of your applause and generosity. Increased costs again to cover new health and safety measures as well as the cost of living mean we need your donations more this year than ever before. Please give generously to enable us to achieve our ambitions in Wells by donating to local causes. We are dedicating this year’s show to Mr John Dean who has worked hard for many years at all the carnivals and who, at the time of writing is quite poorly. We send him best wishes from all members near and far and ask you to join with us in wishing back to good health. This year also sees us thinking about our country’s soldiers who gave their lives 100 years ago so we may enjoy our lives today. The front cover reflects 100 years of carnival. An achievement only possible because of their sacrifice. We shall remember them.

Maurice Day (Hon. President)

running of our carnival plus the local authorities, Wells City Council, Mendip District Council, Avon & Somerset Police, the local St John Ambulance, Wells Fire Brigade and all other agencies, including our very own Army of Volunteers, who do it for the love of making a difference for those less fortunate than ourselves. Well done. So, Joe public, for every pound you give tonight will help give a much needed boost in making a difference to many local good causes which really need it. Enjoy the procession, it is an amazing show as it makes its way through the majestic City of Wells narrow streets, lighting up the sky all achieved by the volunteers. Clap, shout and dance about and give as much as you can, every penny counts and as we always will hear said At The Going Down Of The Sun, and in the morning, We Will Remember Them. God Save The Queen.

Globe Carnival Club Last year Globe Carnival Club enjoyed arguably their most successful year ever with “Head Hunters” which was set in Africa and was all about Voodoo and “Damballah” the snake god, This years entry is not to be confused with a fairground ghost train, The Globe have stepped back to the 19th-century. The Victorians loved the world of the creaking floorboards they had a real fascination with the supernatural. So with that in mind the Globe have reconstructed a Haunted Victorian Train Station, the clocks are set at around the bewitching hour and the Spirit world is ready to come out to play. Any flickering lamps are all part of the illusion and should be therefore considered a technical achievement The Globe have had a very busy year. having identified in 2012 that there was a need to update their towing vehicles and trailers to keep ahead of strict rules for the use of carnival vehicles. It was agreed to follow the lead of other clubs and make the change from agricultral tractors to commercial vehicles over a two year period. A small sub comittee led by Mike O’Neill and Jay Phillips set off in March 2012 and sourced 2 end of life ERF commercial vehicle tractor units to convert into Locomotives. Extensive work to remove the cab, reposition the driver and all the controls were under taken to one unit and a box body sourced and mounted to the 2nd unit. All the existing hydraulic trailer brake systems were removed and up to date fail safe air brake systems installed, as well as a re design to the generator trailer. With this investment it is hoped these purpose built units will keep Globe ahead of current vehicle requirements and take us into the future whilst giving us the better options when trying to incorperate all units into the carnival theme. The Club owe a big thanks to the team involved with this project:- Mike O’Neill, Jay Phillips, Ken Phipp, PaulYates, Colin Bailey, Kyle Phipps, Chris Gardener, Alan Phipp Also John Warren and Vagabonds C.C , Will Bevan and Gremlins CC for all help and advice given The Globe are now the only Wells club to meet and build close to the City. The club are always on the lookout for new members to keep the Spirit of Carnival and the Wells Carnival tradition going. Prospective new members should give Sue Barber a ring on 01761 418320 and come down and meet us at Wells Football Club every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month.

Cobra Carnival Club Cobra carnival club has been going for 22 years and based at the Tramways, Wells, but we build our entry at Butler Park in Glastonbury. We have various inflatables, which is our main fundraiser, taking them to school or village fetes and private hires. Last year’s entry was Rio Birds. We were very pleased with the entry and came away with 5 cups. Our entry this year is called Disco Fever. Mendip Vale Carnival Club Mendip Vale Carnival Club has had a busy year, after last years smaller entry “Merry Christmas”. The club set their sights on 2014 and the way the club would move forward, back to 100ft with their 2014 entry called “Attractions”. Club chairman Andrew Bennett said “We are still quietly fighting a large business rates tax bill, which has caused us many problems over the past 2 years, which was also the reason behind last year’s smaller tractor and generator entry. But if we let this issue consume us it would of taken away all the fun of carnival throughout the year for us. So we’ve taken the attitude that we’ve done enough tractor and generator entries over the years, now it’s time to go back to 100ft carts.” Mendip Vale has also taken on a few more fundraising events this year to cover the cost of the cart. The idea came from one of their younger members Ashley Guise, who also heads up the painting team with his brother Liam. It really is a team effort this year. Cart designer Ashley said “The idea is a broken down fairground which has seen better days, with deliberate attempts to show the abandoned elements of the various parts of the fairground. We have tried to be creative with the artwork and painting techniques this year, as this sort of theme requires something a bit different.” This year’s entry was chosen in March, with ideas of building and engineering being decided over the spring and summer months and cart building stepping up a gear in July after the clubs busiest fundraiser, the Glastonbury festival. Cart Captain Tom Sheppard explained, “We’ve spent slightly more than originally planned, as you can’t do this type of theme without having certain items on the cart. It’s our most ambitious entry since moving to our current build site on the Glastonbury Butler Carnival Park. But costs generally increase year on year, from building materials right through to generator hire costs.” Mendip Vale, as well as any other carnival club knows, there is an incredible amount of work which goes into getting any sort of entry out on the road. The restrictions and costs put upon clubs now mean carnival has to become a full time job throughout the year, and the commitment has increased. So with a cart like a fairground, it all has to work as it should. It has to be engineered like a real fairground and painted like an old style fairground. It’s certainly no easy cart to build.

Mendip Vale is hoping to bring the old style carnival and funfair feel back to the streets of their home town of Wells on the cold November nights. Chairman: Andrew Bennett, Cart Captain: Tom Sheppard, Costumes: Mary Hollingshead, Cart Designer: Ashley Guise, Painting & Artwork: Liam Guise, Engineers: Andrew Bennett & Mini Sheppard, Electrics: Glyn Pearce & team, Musical Director: Glyn Pearce, Vso Supervisor: Tom Sheppard

Gorgons Carnival Club Cart Title: Fire & Ice Cart Concept: Shelly Ford & Matt Andrews Music: I Feel The Earth Move by Martika Costumes & Make up: Shelly Ford Cart Captain: Matt Andrews Once again we have a 60ft entry but this year with a twist, we are attempting something that has never been done before to our knowledge, we have taken the classic theme of Fire & Ice however one side of the cart will be Fire and the other will be Ice. The cart will have 9 performers on it with only one man performing on the cart; this is Chairman Jason Carpenter who got married the week before Bridgwater which meant he had to miss the first carnival due to being on his honeymoon. The club has had a busy year with weddings of Ant & Karen Burrows (supporters) Jason & Lara (Chairman & supporter) and the birth of Teddy John Andrews the first child for Cart Captain Matt Andrews and club member (Harriet Fowler) along with 2 other babies born to the Gorgons family.

Last year Gorgons C C did a theme entitled Demons. This was a theme based on the Devils from hell, as the club was low on members and funds this year Shelly Ford & Matt Andrews came up with the idea of changing the theme slightly and building the cart on the smallest budget it has had in years. In January the club changed its headquarters to the Britannia Inn, Wells. The club would like to thank Rob, Karen and all of their staff for making them feel so welcome and for all of the support they have received. Sadly Gorgons Carnival Club lost Susan Ford (one of their founder members) this year. She was very loved by all of the members of the club and is greatly missed by everyone who knew her. The club have dedicated this year’s entry in her memory. Fundraising: Helium Balloon decoration, face painting, outside bars, stewarding. The club is looking for new members, sponsors and helpers to keep the club going for years to come. If you would like any more information about the Gorgons Carnival Club or would like to become a member please contact Shelly Ford on 07894 078999.

D’Ovidio builders and Banwell & Weston Young Farmers Club are also assisting. • Wells Fire Brigade is selling programmes and badges. • We would be grateful if visitors to the carnival would only purchase items from permitted traders and make donations only to registered collectors. • Wells Carnival Committee has a patronage system in place, whereby individuals and businesses of all sizes can become involved with the Carnival at various levels by making a donation.
