CITY OF WELLS ILLUMINATED CARNIVAL Hello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! It’s a warm welcome to you all braving the winter weather as the Carnival comes to our beautiful City of Wells this year, hopefully there is no snow! We have great news The Queen is back this year, so give her a wave as she leads the procession around the City. Our collection tonight will be supporting the City of Wells Fire Brigade in providing life saving equipment - a defibrillator is one item which will benefit the citizens of Wells; so dig deep into your pockets and help this worthy cause. We have another fantastic show for you tonight and we, the committee, hope you will enjoy the procession as it passes through. You won’t see anything like this anywhere else in the world. Please support the thousands of volunteers who have been busy all year raising money to build their carts and applaud them for their efforts in entertaining you tonight. Once again the clubs have some really stunning and mind-blowing showcases for you to enjoy: Music - Lights – Action! As always we ask to fill our collection buckets and vehicles with as much as you can afford to help our local good charities and those less off than ourselves here in the City. Every penny that is raised here this evening will be distributed to these causes so please dig deep. Please keep a safe distance from the entries and enjoy the Carnival and come back again and again in the future. Many thanks,
Mr Martin Coppell Chairman, Wells City Carnival Ltd
Message from our President Welcome to the highlight of the year here in Wells. England’s smallest city with the biggest heart. Every year we struggle to cover the cost of putting on such an extravagant production on our streets; ever increasing costs and rules and regulations together with increased licensing fees mean your support is more vital than ever. Please give generously to our official collectors and collecting floats. Enjoy the fantastic show which the clubs have spent many thousands of hours building and rehearsing. They will perform on average a 4 hour non stop show at each carnival. And all for the price of a pint. If you all give £2.00 per person we could plan the next ten years. So come on people of Wells, let’s keep the Carnival alive and kicking. Finally we need all the help we can get so if you can spare a few hours on carnival day please get in touch. We meet monthly at the Brittania Inn where all persons are invited to attend. Stay safe and enjoy the show.

COBRA CLUB This year Cobra Carnival Club would like to welcome you on their journey through Death Valley (idea created by Matt Jennings and Luke Coward). Where the dead men and women of the Wild West shall rise again for one last time on their adventurous highway to hell. The long winding, rocky roads, unstable horses and creaky carriages travel through the valley escorting the dancing saloon girls and cowboys from the saloon in the mountains. Members will be dancing their way through the valley to the classic ACDC’s Highway to Hell, choreographed by Charlotte Serpis, Emily Loxton, Matt Jennings and Vicki Graham. Dressed in glamorous costumes made by Julie Coward, Matt Jennings and Emily Loxton. Make up designed by Kay Stroud.
Cobra work extremely hard throughout the year to raise funds for their entry. They are very dedicated to their work and spent many hours stewarding, marshaling and car parking. They also have an exclusive number of children’s inflatables, available for private hire and large-scale events. For more information on any of the above please get in contact with Simon Melluish on 07946867103. Last year saw Cobra dancing in their own Vampires Ball. A fantastic year was had by all of Cobra with their Vamparade entry, with the enjoyment and success continuing on to win 7 cups during the January presentations.
Cobra would like to thank all of the non-members who have spent valuable time helping build this years entry. Especially to Jamie Crispin for his determination in adjusting our sound system, Mike Daniels, Mike and Dave Gibbons, Oatley Construction Ltd, Owain Mathias (The Yurt Company) and Titch Masters. Thank you also to all of the organisations and events which have invited us to come along with our children’s inflatables.

GLOBE CLUB Feature Class: ‘WILD’ The Globe had another good year in 2015 with their entry ‘Under The Sea’ winning many accolades along the way but one or two technical problems at the final carnival in Glastonbury saw the Globe’s season cut short. So the club have been working very hard behind the scenes to create something even better to come back with for 2016 carnival season. Their entry ‘WILD’ is set in a deserted Tribal village which has been reclaimed by nature and made a home by the jungle animals. This is possibly one of the Globe’s most ambitious designs to date, it features over 100 flying parrots, rotating trees and flowers as well as the cart performers dancing in baskets whilst being raised and lowered by the trunks of 11 elephants, all while dancing to the uplifting tune of ‘Beautiful Creatures’ taken from the film Rio 2 and remixed especially for the club by DJ Stay. The Globe are now the only Wells club to meet and build close to the City of Wells. The club is always on the lookout for new members to keep the spirit of Carnival and the Wells Carnival tradition going. Prospective new members should give Sue Barber a ring on 01761 418320 and come down and meet us at Wells football club every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. GORGONS CLUB Gorgons Carnival Club 2016 entry: Pinball Theme idea: Paul Pickersgill Design & Costumes: Club Members Music: Pinball Wizard by Elton John Choreography: Amie Fernandes da Silva Gorgons CC 2016 theme is based on the classic arcade game, in which points are scored by a player manipulating one or more steel balls on a play field inside the pinball machine. The cart will be host to a number of well-known pinball terms & shapes. The primary objective of the game is to score as many points as possible which will be depicted throughout the cart; the performers will form the different targets of a pinball machine. Gorgons Carnival Club were formed in 1972 by Mike & Sue Ford, Mike Reed & Maureen Cooper. The club raises its funds by marshalling various events around Somerset, monthly quizzes at their headquarters the Britannia Inn, Bath Road Wells which are held on the 3rd Sunday of every month, and they will be holding one on 20th November & 18th December 2016.
The members of the Carnival Club would like to thank Rob & Karen along with all of the staff at the Britannia Inn for once again making them welcome and for all of their support. They would also like to thank Darren Lang from Westonzoyland CC for all of his help with the VSO, and Gerald Burch for his support with supplies from the former Britannia Carnival Club. We would also like to thank all of our sponsors and anyone else who helped us throughout the year. Gorgons Carnival Club also provides a fully licensed outside bar for all occasions. We are always looking for new members to help with fundraising, building, costume making etc. For more details contact Shelly Ford on 07894078999 or email GorgonsCC@aol.com You can also follow up on Facebook by searching Gorgons Carnival Club or on Twitter @GorgonsCC
carnival queen Ella Winter is 9 years old and has been involved in carnival for as long as she can remember. She was involved in a local children’s club ‘Key Kids’ but due to unforeseen circumstances they are no longer taking part so Ella wanted to still be involved in the November procession. She raised sponsorship by going door to door and asking family and friends to help her so she would like to say a massive thank you to all who have helped her become Carnival Queen.
carnival princess Rosie Ham is aged 12 years old and is in year 8 at the Wells Blue School. She enjoys arts and crafts, cooking, wearing sparkly high heel shoes, make up, fashion and spending time with her family. Rosie worked very hard to raise £215 through sponsorship and donations which she collected from friends, family, complete strangers and from very generous donations from COOK in High Street Wells, and Da Lucianos in Wells. The donation of vouchers from these shops allowed Rosie to start a bidding war amongst friends and family for the highest price paid. Rosie even took her sponsorship form and collection tin to school and her cousins 30th birthday party where she went round 100 guests asking for donations/sponsorship whilst explaining to them the great charities the Wells Carnival supports. Rosie also wrote and delivered by hand herself 40 letters to local businesses in Wells asking for support and sponsorship. She walked her home village also asking for sponsorship and was given donations by local villagers in support for her hard work and brilliant causes. Rosie would like to thank everyone for their generous donations and sponsorship money, and would like to thank COOK and Da Lucianos for the very generous voucher donations. She is very much looking forward to dressing up in a gorgeous dress and sparkly high heels. She can’t wait to be Wells Carnival Princess of a carnival she has watched and supported since she was a baby.
