H

ello ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. It’s a warm welcome to you all braving the winter weather as the Carnival comes to our beautiful City of Wells this year, hopefully there is no rain about tonight. We are pleased to welcome from Bad Dürkheim Stadburgermeister Christoph Glogger (SPD), and his entourage from Germany. Bad Dürkheim is a spa town in the RhineNeckar urban agglomeration and is the seat of the Bad Dürkheim district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. A very warm welcome to you all, and we hope you enjoy the Carnival. We have another fantastic show for you tonight and we, the committee hope you will enjoy the procession as it passes you by. You won’t see anything like this anywhere else in the world as the thousands of volunteers who have been busy all year raising money to build their carts entertain you, so applaud them for their efforts tonight. Once again the clubs have some really stunning and mind blowing showcases for you to enjoy. So let’s enjoy, music - lights - action! As always we ask you to fill our collection buckets and vehicles with as much as you can afford to help our local good charities and those less fortunate than ourselves here in the City. Each year we distribute your donations to local charities and good causes so please dig deep, every pound counts. We hope that you keep a safe distance from the entries and enjoy the Carnival and come back again and again in the future. Many thanks,

Mr Martin Coppell Chairman, Wells City Carnival Ltd

Message from our President Welcome to the smallest city in England where we once again proudly present our annual spectacular carnival. Every November across Somerset towns come alive to the heavy beat of music and dance produced on the back of huge trailers with 1000’s of light bulbs creating fantastic scenes depicting many different themes. Variety is certainly the spice of life in our area. This year we are pleased to host a visit from our twin town of Bad Dürkheim in Germany and hope and trust they all enjoy the show. You can wave and greet them as they parade around the town at the head of our carnival in procession with our own Mayor Cllr John North. Our endeavours get harder every year as it becomes increasingly more difficult to raise the funds to put this magnificent show on so as per usual, we plead with each and every one of you to give generously to our numerous collectors and official collecting vehicles. In addition to the collectors, you will hopefully be aware by now of a campaign to play the street traders at their own game and sell our own goods to help with carnival expenses. These itinerant street sellers do not contribute any thing to our carnival and are a nuisance to one and all on the streets. We cannot legally stop them selling but we can play the same game so if your child wants a sword or light up toy, whistle or bunny ears that light up then please purchase from one of our official sellers or from one of our stalls around the town. You can identify them by their branded tabards. Please enjoy the spectacular light show, give generously and above all, stay safe.

Maurice Day (President) City of Wells Illuminated Carnival

STOP • THINK • SUPPORT ONLY BUY FROM OUR OFFICIAL STALLS

Toys and novelties Please buy your light up toys and novelties from our official stalls.

You will see numerous stalls around the route which will be manned by local PTA’s selling official and good quality merchandise at very competitive prices.

Wells City Carnival along with fourteen other carnival towns are fighting back against the groups of street traders who invade our towns every year at Carnival time but contribute nothing what so ever to the Carnival costs.

Please support the efforts of these volunteers who will be raising much needed funds for not only local schools but also for our carnival.

An antiquated, out of date act of parliament means we are powerless to stop the peddlers. We feel that the only way to beat them is to join them and by doing so our aim is to redistribute some of their massive profits (which go into lining their own pockets) to offset some of our ever increasing costs.

All of our goods are CE marked and have also passed our very own stringent safety checks. Health and safety and ever increasing legislative costs mean we continually struggle to make the carnival financially viable.

Every time you buy from one of our street sellers you will be helping to keep the tradition of carnival in Wells, so please support our endeavors to keep carnival alive! City of Wells Illuminated Carnival

THE ROUTE The procession will assemble on the Wells relief road, entering from the Shepton Mallet direction. There is strictly no parking at Cathedral Park as this is a private road, please make arrangements to park vehicles elsewhere. Walking entries (classes 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11) will be assembled in Cathedral Park, Rowdens Road. The finish will be at The Sherston.

• The letting off of fireworks during the procession is expressly forbidden. • All spectators are requested to exercise special care while visiting the carnival. • Do not crowd onto the main road, or allow children to run alongside or between vehicles. • Do not throw coins onto the competing floats – all donations should be deposited into official collecting tins or special collecting vehicles.

Have a fabulous evening 2

globe CLUB The Globe had very successful 2016 with their entry ‘WILD’ winning many accolades around the carnival circuit from Judges and the public alike. So the club have been working hard behind the scene’s to come back with something even better for 2017 carnival season. Their entry ‘WHITE MAGIC’ is set in a frozen kingdom where Dragons roam and are ruled by Ice wizards using the cold and snow to create there magic. This is year the club have invested heavily in new ways to light the cart purchasing 5000 led lamps and 60 led flood lights meaning a smaller, lighter generator can be used to power the entry. The Globe are now the only Wells club to meet and build close to the City of Wells. The club are always on the lookout for new members to keep the Spirit of Carnival and the Wells Carnival Tradition going. Prospective new members should give Sue Barber a ring on 01761 418320 and come down and meet us at Wells football club every 1st and 3rd Sunday of every month. Number of Years in Carnival: 49 years. MENDIP VALE CLUB After last year’s “Carnevale Travestimento”, Mendip Vale CC decided to go for a slightly easier name for 2017.

James Clarke, Jason Nuttycombe, Nigel Jones, Adam Hopper, Andrew Tallon, Rachel Whitcombe, Tina.

“Troy” is based on the tale from the Trojan War about the subterfuge that the Greeks used to enter the city of Troy and win a war. The tale says that the Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse, and hid a select force of men inside. The Greeks pretended to sail away, and the Trojans pulled the horse into their city as a victory trophy. That night the Greek force crept out of the horse and opened the gates for the rest of the Greek to destroy the city of Troy, ending the war!

This year’s cart is dedicated to the memory of Rai Turk, who passed away in early September. Rai was our Vice-President and good friend to our club for over four decades. Rai worked tirelessly for many clubs that you’ll see tonight. His work with the police and the VSO team that look after the safety of carnival was legendary, and he was respected by all that knew him. We’ll all miss you Rai.

The cart is made up of various spinning Greek columns, and horses traveling through the city of Troy. Like many clubs, Mendip Vale’s cart is lit solely by LED lighting, which means the days of the giant costly generator rentals are hopefully behind them. Over the years carnival has moved with the times, with colour changing LED’s becoming more popular. This type of lightening lends itself very well with the depiction of an ancient Greek city, as the cart is being lit from behind the cart structure in a bid to hide the electric lightning panels that perhaps weren’t as common in the 13th century. Like most clubs out there, Mendip vale always rely on the help from non-members and friends. The club wish to thank for their support in 2017 – Mike Churches, Adrian Guise, Wainwrights (Moons Hill Quarry), Vern Hill, Luke Coward, Jeff Puddy, Zoe Guise, Dave Lukins, The Venue Club Wells, Paul Thompson, Jane Emery, Aaron Phipps. People on cart – Ashley Guise, Kev Wickham, Andy Wickham, Tania Kinnersley, Zena Sheppard, Gemma Woods, Bobbie Boardman, Sarah Stott, Jodie bea Galway, Lauren Charles, Kev Brock, Reese Boardman. People not on cart – Neil Kinnersley, Liam Guise, Mini Sheppard, Tom Sheppard, Andy Bennett, Toby Appleby, Romey Richards, Mark Boardman, Scott Langton, Sophie Langton, Matt Lukins, James Loxton, Gerald Burch,

A SCOUT DONATION The Wells Carnival Committee took a decision to reward the hard work and dedication made to the Carnival by the members and parents of the Wells Cubs and Scouts group. Both groups have supplied teams of collectors and counters to the Carnival for many years. These collectors have enabled Wells Carnival to gain much needed funds to continue to bring the Carnival into town. The photograph above shows the presentation of a cheque for ÂŁ1000 towards the equipment fund which supplies tents etc. for use by the Cubs and Scouts at camps and events.
