Dear Teachers, This is our English PRE I Teacher’s Booklet. It is to be used and followed by authorized teachers who work for CEI – FLORA, a private English course in Goiânia. There are nine lessons in PRE I. Each one has two or three parts: a STORY, QUESTIONS (in most of them) and CONVERSATION. Besides the lessons, you will find important guidelines that must be followed. Do not hesitate to ask whenever you are in doubt, but utilize this booklet as your reference to teach PRE I. This booklet for teachers’ exclusive use contains: • A vocabulary list. It is a list of all the words that come up in each lesson, in alphabetical order with a blue number that corresponds to pictures in the folder; • An officially numbered “Cut and Stick” list that MUST be followed as decided in the 1ST PRE I WORKSHOP held in 2004. If the teacher feels it is necessary, he/she can add Extra Words to the students’ Cut and Stick, but these pictures do not follow a particular number. Be careful so as not to lengthen the lessons with unnecessary vocabulary; • Notes followed by this sign ( ) are placed in order to remind the teachers of extra information and must be followed. All other notes written in red or inside oval circles also need due attention; • A list of Useful Vocabulary is also provided so that teachers remember to practise or just teach such words. We call vocabulary words and expressions useful when they are essential for the comprehension of the lessons and must be explained/practised/mentioned in class, depending on the lesson and level of the group. However, they do not necessarily have to be dealt with in depth; (E.g., The verb “to say” in the Story in Lesson 1 needs to be only explained and repeated sometimes so students can understand the Story from the Lesson and learn how to pronounce such word. However, the word “instead” used at the end of the sentence found in Conversation in Lesson 5 needs to be very well practised so students learn how to use it perfectly, though not requested in the Cut and Stick activity.); • At the end of the Teacher’s Booklet, you will find a series of songs that are played on the course CD. Some are part of the program of the course and must be taught, explained and sung at the appropriate time, following the CD tracks. Others are to be inserted according to the interest of the class and the teacher’s creativity.

Story That is a boy. The boy’s name is Jack. Jack is 6 years old. Jack can jump, Jack can run, Jack can swim, but Jack cannot fly. Jack is not swimming now. He is not sleeping either. He is jumping over a candlestick. He can jump over a candlestick because the candlestick is small, but he cannot jump over a house because the house is big. Jack says, “I can jump over a candlestick.” His mother says,

Ask students to wear something different to the classes you work with the handout.

Give your students the handout on the BEAR and the five different outfits for them to color and make a story. Take this opportunity to introduce SHORT STORIES. Make sure all the students really understand the difference between THERE ARE and THEY ARE in meaning and pronunciation. The Indians

Extra Vocabulary to be used

Teach and quiz your students on the NUMBERS at the very beginning of the Lesson as you teach the new word TO COUNT. Then count with them until they learn how to do so very well. Reinforce the difference between “…teen” and “…ty” as in thirteen and thirty. Remember that BUSHEL is not a container but a unit of dry measure. Remember to explain START, STOP, FOOL, FOR, and JUST SO; even though you won’t be practising or asking for pictures / sentences.

The Potatoes

(Recorded by Andréa Conde and Eduardo) Story That boy lives on a farm because his father is a farmer. The boy goes to school every day, but as he does not study, he does not know how to count. One day, the farmer dug up a bushel of potatoes and told the boy to count the potatoes. The boy started to count like this: “1, 2, 3, 9, 5, 7...” His father told him to stop counting for it was all wrong. He said, “Don’t you know how to count?” The father told the boy to count just so, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.” The boy started again, “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 6, 8, 7...” “Stop, stop, stop, stop counting,” father said again. “It is all wrong! You, fool!” Then the boy’s sister came and helped him count the potatoes. She told him to count just so: 1 potato, 2 potatoes, 3 potatoes, 4... 5 potatoes, 6 potatoes, 7 potatoes, more... 8 potatoes, 7 potatoes, 6 potatoes, 5... 4 potatoes, 3 potatoes, 2 potatoes... My, oh, my... Hot potatoes.

Old McDonald (Recorded by Andréa Conde, Eduardo and Juliana K.) Story That is a farmer. The farmer’s name is Jack McDonald, but they do not call him Jack McDonald. They call him “Old McDonald” because he is very old. He is 77 years old. He’s a very good old man. People like him very much. They like to sing a song to him. The song is:
