The airport’s history began in 1923 with the foundation of a joint-stock company aimed to arrange scheduled flights via Kharkiv. The new airport was built in 1932 and by 1936 it became the best in the USSR. The existing terminal was built after the Second World War and construction of the airport began in 1951, and its opening was timed to pompous celebration of the 300th anniversary of Ukraine and Russia reunification (1954). By 1970, Kharkiv airport passenger traffic had already reached 600 thousand. In 10 years the passenger traffic increased up to 900 thousand pax. The new life for Kharkiv airport started in 1995. Than the airport was significantly modernized, including the lengthening of runway and customs control establishment (before there wasn’t any customs control because the airport was used only for domestic flights). The new “International Airport Kharkiv”as an air communal enterprise, was founded in 2001 after the airport administration was transferred from Ukrainian transport ministry to Kharkiv city. From 1 April, 2008 the communal enterprise “International Airport www.hrk.aero

Kharkiv” was granted on long-term lease to “NSAM” LTD (“NSAM” LTD is a part of DCH investment management group, which is one of the largest business groups on the Ukrainian market) with the purpose to modernize Kharkiv air transport and communication system before EURO 2012. In autumn 2008, the airport major reconstruction began. The modernization plan was developed by the Airport Consulting Vienna Company (Austria) and DCH invested $205 mio in this project. The modernization foresees the construction of the new RWY with length of 2500 m, PCN 52, the construction of the new terminal with a total area of 20 000 sq.m, passenger traffic increase to 700 thousand pax in 2012, transformation of the existing terminal into the terminal for VIP passengers and the official delegations reception hall, landside facilities reconstruction and the construction of parking for 423 cars. Routes CIS 2010 delegates were the first people to enjoy the brand new airport terminal and to witness the exciting development that this airport and region offers.
