La Traviata, a hallmark of romantic theater, will be performed at the Covey Performing Arts Center on February 17 and 18 by Utah Lyric Opera. The story is set in 1950s Paris and follows two star-crossed lovers, Violetta and Alfredo. Violetta is a partying courtesan who believes that life is only pleasure. She comes to know true love and happiness through Alfredo’s love. “The music is so very beautiful. But it’s also very passionate, violent at times—it’s got everything,” Stephen Dubberly, the conductor of La Traviata, said. Dubberly is visiting from Fort Worth Opera in Texas. International soprano Kearstin Piper Brown jumped at the opportunity to play the part of Violetta with a smaller opera company such as Utah Lyric. “Opera is more alive because of that—because of the smaller opera companies,” Brown said. Local talent Isaac Hurtado sings the lush lines of Alfredo. “I like that opera is everything,” Hurtado said. “It’s this magical human voice over a full orchestra in a big place with no microphone. It’s like melting all the arts together in one place.” The event promises to be evocative and entertaining. Supertitles will be projected above the stage so that the audience can understand each word of Italian. “La Traviata is classy but it’s completely accessible,” Dubberly explained. “It’s a lot of fun. It’s not terribly long. The characters are real, and you’ll laugh and you’ll cry. You’ll just experience live theater, and we all need to do that.” The opera is a great Valentine’s weekend date for romantics-at-heart. Tickets are $10–18.
